The installation of the new boiler at Tokomairiro High School, has given some of the students the opportunity to put skills they have learned in the classroom into practice in a real life setting.
Jeremy Coleman (Year 13), and Ryan Shanks (Year 11), both did some welding with Larry from Foley’s Mechanical on Tuesday, and both enjoyed their experience.
"Today I got the chance to go test my skills and do a bit of tig welding in the room where the school's heating / boiling system is being installed. It was actually pretty cool. I learnt a bit how to make things level and also learnt what a level was apparently!!!”
“It was cool to have the chance to try some tig welding in a work environment. Larry explained everything and showed me how to keep my weld neat” -Ryan Shanks (Right)
Every day counts towards your child’s learning at school. Attending school gives your child the best opportunity to realise their full potential and do well in life. When should I keep my child home from school?
You should keep your child home from school if they are:
• too sick to learn and need time to rest and recover
• have symptoms of concern including fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, sore throat, skin infections such as school sores, a new rash or difficulty breathing
• have tested positive for COVID-19 (more information on symptoms, testing, and when it is safe to return to school, can be found below)
• a household contact of someone with COVID-19, they develop symptoms themselves and they are testing with a rapid antigen test over a 48-hour period to see if they present a positive result during that time
• have an infectious illness and have been advised to stay home by their local public health team or their healthcare provider.
Local volunteers were recognised and celebrated at the 2024 Clutha District Community Service Awards held recently in Balclutha.
The Milton Elder Care Trust was a combined winner in the Health and Wellbeing section.
The Milton Elder Care Trust has demonstrated exceptional commitment to enhancing the health and wellbeing of our community's elderly population through their dedicated initiatives. Meeting twice a week, their comprehensive programme includes a variety of engaging activities such as picnics, card games, housie, dining out, and live entertainment featuring singers, which are immensely popular among their clients.
What sets the Milton Elder Care Trust apart is their extraordinary team of volunteers, who generously contribute their time and resources to ensure these activities thrive. Volunteers use their own vehicles to transport clients, coordinate activities, and adapt programmes to suit individual preferences, ensuring inclusivity and enjoyment for all participants.
Beyond mere recreation, the Trust fosters invaluable connections, providing lifelines and nurturing friendships that enrich the lives of elderly community members. Their dedication exemplifies the spirit of community service and

It is great to be back at school and hearing about everything our students and staff did over the break.
Term three is always a very busy term at school. It’s the last full term for our senior students and our Year 9 and 10 students have started their second semester courses. We also have a number of events this term, our annual Cultural Competition which is always a fabulous day, our first Toko’s Got Talent, Year 9 and 10 camp and our school formal as well as Open Evening on 26th August.
Students Signing Out
We have made a slight change to the way students can sign out of school during the day. Students will no longer be able to sign out of school using the tablet in the office area. Instead they will need to sign out with a member of staff in the office. We ask that if your child does need to leave school early for a medical appointment or for any other reason that you either contact the office directly to let us know or provide your child with the appropriate appointment card or note.
Network Upgrade
Next week we will be having our network upgraded. This will mean that there will be interruptions with our internet access, printing and potentially our phones. The school cellphone number is 027 268 3362 if you need to call or send a text.
Japan Trip Update
Planning for the 2025 Japan Trip is progressing well. In early August Mr Simpson will be sending out further information about payments.
Literacy and Numeracy Results
Last term many of our Year 10 and 11 students sat the NCEA Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities. We have been advised that the Reading results will be released on the 23rd July and the Writing and

Numeracy results will be released on 5th August. To attain NCEA Level 1 students must attain 10 Literacy (5 reading and 5 writing) and 10 Numeracy credits. These Common Assessment Activities are an opportunity for students to gain these credits. If students do not achieve these assessments there is an opportunity to re-sit them in term four and for this year there are also some NCEA English and Maths standards that can be used to fulfil the literacy and numeracy requirements.
Open Evening
Our Open Evening for prospective students will be on Monday 26th August starting at 6pm in our school hall. During the evening there will be a school tour and the opportunity to talk to staff and current students. If you are unable to make the evening but would like the opportunity to come and have a look around our facilities please contact the office and we can arrange an appointment.
As we head into the coldest part of the year we want to ensure that all of our students are warm at school but also are in the correct uniform. Students are able to wear a plain black or navy jacket and we also have two styles of jacket available through NZ Uniforms. However, hoodies are not part of our uniform and students this week have been informed that they will not be allowed to wear a hoodie around school.

Once again, it is time for the Tokomaiiriro High School Library Reading Week. The week is designed to focus attention on the library. This year the focus is a little bit different.
Libraries are a happy place for many people, where they can relax and do the things they enjoy. While our prime purpose is to encourage reading and learning, this year the library’s focus is also on mindfulness and wellbeing. The week will focus on some of the more relaxing and thoughtful activities available in the library.
Throughout the week at lunchtimes, we will be running a variety of activities to encourage wellbeing and relaxation. Daily activities are:
Monday: Game Day. Play a board game or take part in a quick quiz.
Tuesday: Relaxation Day. Come in and relax, listen to some soothing classical music, learn some relaxation exercises.
Wednesday: Lego Day. One way to unwind is to play mindfully! Come in and play with Lego!
Thursday: Read Aloud Day. Come in and listen to a story. Recommended for all year levels.
Friday: Dress Up Day!
Come in costume as your Favourite Fictional Character. Explore your creativity by making a costume. Have your photo taken and go into The Costume Competition. A photo is required to enter the Costume Competition and is required to help the judges. Prizes for best costume for both staff and students!
We will also run some traditional activities such as the giant Reading Week Quiz and the Junior Quiz
The daily activities are open to all students.so come along to our relaxing space and take part! There will be spot prizes and giveaways.
Remember the library can expand your mind! Expand Your knowledge! Or you can just chill out with a book or a game!
Call in at lunchtime throughout the week to take part in activities, enter the quizzes and do not forget your costume for Friday 2nd of August.
Bible Reading for the Week
‘This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live’ Deuteronomy 30:19
Clutha District Council Road Safety and Clutha District libraries are working together to make driver licensing more accessible to our rangatahi and all our community members, throughout the district.
During Term 2 in Vocational Studies, we started the learner licence course here at Tokomairiro High School with Rachel Harrison (CDC | Waka Kotahi) and had a lot of fun working through the Road Code, playing board games such as "Driven for Success" and doing kahoot quizzes based on the actual test.
Several of the students who attended are going to sit their learners licence next Monday at the Milton Library. We are hoping that this can become an annual course that we can offer right here in our backyard.
Watch this space for a special workshop just for the parents on "How to teach your child to drive"
I had the pleasure of attending Big River homes to have a look at what our students Vinnie Tawhiti and Nic Healey had been doing during terms one and two on Wednesday and Thursdays of the school term, for their building and construction course with OSTC. The students are building a house for Big River Homes, who are based in Balclutha, who are generously sponsoring this course. They are involved in all aspects of the build, and learn construction skills and knowledge including the correct use of hand and power tools, materials used in building, and building site safety practices. I was interested to know that the house that they are building has already been sold and will be moved to its new location in Tokoiti on completion.
They have started a sleepout sized building as well, while waiting on materials to arrive for the inside of the house. This also will be sold upon completion.
