General Science Field Trip
On Friday 15th August the General Science Year 13 Students went down to the stream (Salmonds Creek) on the school grounds and in Taylor Park. We were examining the relationship between the physical properties of the stream and its biota for an Environmental Science Assessment.
We were very kindly accompanied by Scott Martin from Enviroschools. was wonderful to see the students integrate their theoretical knowledge with the wealth of practical knowledge that Scott demonstrated. They clearly had enormous fan and learned a huge amount. It was marvellous to note that the area with the restored native vegetation, by the bridge across the fields, had the best results. There were some very good biota results and the best physical results on the tream. This aligns with the tests performed by the Year 11 Geography students last year.

Tokomairiro High School Newsletter...
SCHOOL MISSION: Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
As we move into the second half of the term, we see winter sports coming to an end. Last weekend, several of our students played in their respective finals as part of the combined South Otago Schools teams. Next week is Winter Tournament Week and we wish all our students who are playing netball and rugby the very best of luck.
Cross Country Success
A number of our Year 7 and 8 students took part in the South Otago Cross Country last week. We are very proud of their efforts and results:
• Year 8: Matthew Greer placed 3rd, Ty Fraser 5th, and Carson Sun 9th.
• Year 7: Riley Milligan won the Year 7 race. Ka pai to all of these students for their hard work and determination.
Open Evening and Enrolling for 2026
If you were not able to come to our Open Evening and would still like to look around the school, please don’t hesitate to contact the school office to make an appointment.
Enrolments are now being taken for 2026. Enrolment forms can be brought into the school office or completed online via our website. We also invite all caregivers of new students to Tokomairiro High School to book an enrolment appointment so we can learn a little about your child and answer any questions you may have. These appointments will run between September 8th and 19th and can be booked through the school office.
Tongan Language Week
Mālō e lelei this week we are celebrating Tongan Language Week. We began with a wonderful lunchtime session led by Sioeli Pulu, who taught traditional Tongan dance to a large and very enthusiastic group. He also ran a popular quiz, which drew plenty of interest and friendly competition. It has been fantastic to see him taking the lead in sharing his culture, and the way others have embraced the opportunity to learn and take part. Celebrating lea faka-Tonga in this way strengthens our sense of whānau and reminds us of the richness of the cultures within our kura.
Farewell to Our Japanese Visitors
It doesn’t seem like two weeks since we welcomed four students from Yasuda Gakuen to our kura. They enjoyed a very busy fortnight both at school and out in the wider Otago region, including a trip to Dunedin and a farm visit.
A massive thank you to all the homestay families who opened their homes. Your generosity gave our visitors a wonderful New Zealand experience and also allowed our own students to connect with peers from another culture. I also want to give a very special thank you to Mary Hart, who co-ordinated the visit. Organising an exchange like this takes a lot of time, energy, and attention to detail, and we are very grateful for the work Ms Hart put in to make it such a success.
Exam Week and CAAs
Co-requisite exams in Reading, Writing, and Numeracy will be held at Tokomairiro High School in the first week of September. These are online assessments, sat under exam conditions. Passing a CAA awards 10 co-requisite credits towards NCEA. Students do not need to achieve literacy and numeracy at the same time they can build their success step by step.

Teachers are preparing students in class, and we have set up extra support with daily one-hour tutorials run by Mrs Raewyn Devlin. Extra preparation at home will also give students the best chance of success every bit of practice helps!
For students at NCEA Level 1, 2, or 3, derived grade exams will run from 25–29 August. These serve both as practice for external exams and as a safety net should students need to apply for a derived grade later. Now is the time to build good study habits:
• Start early and organise your notes.
• Make a revision timetable and stick to it.
• Set targets and deadlines.
• Summarise your notes, use visual and auditory techniques, and test yourself.
Course Selection Evening
Choosing courses for NCEA is an important step in planning for the future. The subjects students take not only shape their next year at school but can also open up or close off pathways for apprenticeships, tertiary study, and careers.
This year we will hold a Course Selection Evening on Tuesday 10th September in the school hall. It is a valuable opportunity for students and caregivers to:
• find out more about the different courses we offer,
• talk directly with subject specialist teachers about what each course involves,
• ask questions about workload, assessments, and where the course can lead, and
• get advice about keeping options open for future plans.
The evening will begin with a presentation about NCEA for any parents and students who would like more information about how the qualification works and what changes are coming. We strongly encourage all students entering Year 10–13 in 2026, along with their caregivers, to attend. Making course decisions together, with the right information, gives students the best chance to set themselves up for success.
Strategic Planning for 2026–2028
Our current Strategic Plan finishes at the end of this year. We are now beginning the process of shaping a new plan to guide us from 2026 - 2028. To ensure this plan reflects the aspirations of our community, we would love to hear your thoughts.
A short survey will be available via the QR code. We’d be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete it.

Garden Club AGM Report
What a great turn out we had for the Milton Garden Club AGM, including several members who hadn’t been along for over a year. Three new people attended, and the guest speaker was inspiring.
The official part of the meeting went very smoothly with all the office bearer positions being quickly filled – President Mary-Rose Mallon, Secretary Karen Taylor, Treasurer Barbara Earl, and seven other people on the committee. The finances are looking good too, so the club now finds itself in a very strong position to start the new 2025/26 year.
Part of the reason for the great attendance at our AGM was our guest speaker, Jo Milburn. Her presentation was very well received, as were her bunches of beautiful flowers. Such a cheerful sight on a cool winter’s afternoon. Everyone was all ears as Jo talked us through her journey getting into growing leucadendrons, banksias and proteas and the challenges and successes she has had. Her passion for, and knowledge about these plants really shone through. She left people inspired to go out and plant more of these beautiful winter flowering plants for themselves.
On the second Monday of every month, from September to May, we visit gardens of interest. Check out the Milton Garden Club on Facebook for further information. We would love to have anyone who is interested join us for these outings.
Last Wednesday we had a group of students compete
Indoor Bowls
Last week the Joan Brown Champion Pairs were played. Each club had one pair and they were Moneymore Elizabeth Read and Dave Sutherland, Glenledi Graeme and Maree Hill and Milton Country Clubs duo was Gary Foster and Ray Low. The Open championship singles for South Otago were played at Balclutha last Saturday. With 11 Ladies playing on the two life system the last four ladies surviving were Alanna Moffit, Christine King, Kathryn Edgar and Sue Kingipotikf with Alanna beating Christine in the final 12-8. From 13 entries, the last four men were Barry Gray, Chris Moffit, Robert Wilson and local Peter Grant. The final saw Barry narrowly beat Chris 11-10
News from the Trenches...
A wise man said to me on Sunday, put the effort in and you will get the rewards!!! Which what happened on Sunday with a fantastic turnout for our breakfast cooked by a mighty hard working crew for the All Black vs Argentina test match. Judging by the numerous times certain members refilled their plates, it certainly was appreciated. The pick the score wasn't struck with Bryan Forde being the closest to scooping the jackpot, so he just missed out. Don't forget to enter our Corporate Couch raffle to win this amazing hospitality prize.
That was a smooth transition to the NPC Comp which is humming along nicely and as I'm now official scorer, I'm witnessing the many fluctuating ups and downs the competitors are coping with. It's only early to tell who's poking their heads up. Now listen for this week the first game is on Thursday night so make sure you have your picks locked and loaded. I don't want to hear any snivelling or moaning, you've been warned.
The joker draw still hasn't been struck and I would say no more than 2 or 3 weeks we will be at the level where all cards will be drawn so historically this will be another major success at South Otago entertainment capital. So make sure you have got your tickets as the odds are definitely longer if you don't have a ticket.
Right I've run out of room as there is too much happening at present to keep you updated. It looks like all the gossip I have will have to wait another week, either that or arrive on a Sunday afternoon for more unsolicited entertainment. In fact to prove down with the kids and the lingo, I'm really bussing with things at RSA!!! Spoken with my hat on backwards and pants 6 inches down my ummm…..!!!
