Have Questions?

Learning about Natural Disasters

In Term 3, the Te Kaika hub has been focusing on natural disasters. All Year 7 & 8 classrooms have researched natural disasters both in New Zealand and around the world. The students were highly engaged with this topic.

We were fortunate to have a guest speaker, Kim McClure, who shared her experiences of living through several natural disasters in the North Island.

As part of their learning, students created impressive posters showcasing either a type of natural disaster or a specific event. 78Fre also created some 3D models of a natural disaster.

Tokomairiro High School Ball 2025

Last Friday night our school hall was transformed into something magical. Tables were laden with delicious food, a glowing dance floor appeared in front of the stage, and our Year 11, 12 and 13 cohort dressed to impress. It was a night to remember. We treasure opportunities like this to celebrate and connect. The night’s success was the result of the hard work of many hands and hearts: those who helped with decorations, food, transport, and the many other preparations required, as well as the students who came ready to celebrate together. It was a reminder of our whakataukī for the week: He iti te toki e rite ana ki te tangata – a small axe can do as much work as a man. Every small act of support and kindness contributed to making the evening special. Just like that small axe, everyone matters here, every day. Our thanks to Miss McEntyre and the 2025 Formal Committee for a very special experience!

Term 3 Draws to a Close

We are now in the final week of Term 3. It has been a busy, rewarding term filled with learning, opportunities, and growth. Our students and staff have all worked hard, and they are to be encouraged to finish strong. The whakataukī reminds us that even the small efforts add up to make a big difference. As the term (and the year) draws to a close, everyone must keep chipping away at their goals right up until the end.

Focus Areas for Term 4

Term 4 is a critical time for our senior students. For Year 11s and above, the focus will be preparing for exams and ensuring that enough credits have been earned to secure qualifications. Every assessment, every revision session, and every bit of preparation counts. For our Year 10s, the focus remains on making wise decisions about courses for next year, while our Year 8s and 9s will begin their own course-planning process for 2026 in Term 4.

Our Year 7 and 8 students have begun work on an exciting project that we are all eager to see unveiled next term as well!

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori

This week we also celebrate Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, a taonga of immense value to our school, community and nation. As always, the challenge for all of us is to embrace the opportunities available: take part in the activities, step outside our comfort zones, and encourage others to do the same. Just like the small axe in our whakataukī, every little effort made - whether it’s learning a new kupu (word), greeting someone in te reo, or joining an activity - contributes to keeping our language and culture strong.

Strategic Planning

Our current Strategic Plan finishes at the end of this year. We are now beginning the process of shaping a new plan to guide us from 2026 - 2028. To ensure this plan reflects the aspirations of our community, we would love to hear your thoughts. A short survey will be available via the QR code. We’d be grateful if you could take a few minutes to complete it.

Geography Trip to Tautuku

Year 12 Geography had a brilliant time at Tautuku on the 5thm 6th and 7th of August. We took Wendy Flett with us to enjoy the experience.

The aim was to collect data for their NCEA Geography Research Projects for some real hands-on Geography. This meant they had to learn how to identify tree species and count and record numbers. Alongside this they recorded soil and air temperatures over a 24 hour period. We had beautiful weather, a great group of students and way too much to eat. Keeping the huge fire going with mega sized wood appealed to the pyromaniacs, who then chose to sleep by it to keep it going.

The three days was a total success with a great atmosphere. The only complaint was having to walk the beach track, 100 times they reckoned??? This may be an exaggeration

It's time that we launched the latest gang to hit South Otago with the RSA looking at gauging interest in having a monthly jaunt around South Otago during the afternoon. If you are interested in having an absolute fun time having a cruise, contact either Sara Gillies or RSA and let them know.

Last Saturday we held another successful night with AB vs South Africa test with a great crowd enjoying the festivities. The crew on the Corporate Couch certainly brought the fun times.

The joker draw is away again with the new pack now in full swing. We've already had the first winner of the random prize so make sure you are in to win. Along with our usual meat raffles on a Thursday night, the crowds have just been flocking in.

Now get your spud dig potato patch ready as it's almost time for the selection of the infamous spud. This is when all the secret recipes and potions come out in force.

On my escapades around town this weekend it is disappointing to view the increase in tagging occuring. This is getting closer to the RSA cenotaph so hopefully it's a one off occasion. Thanks to Robyn Calder for providing the goods for the removal. Hopefully it's not needed in the future. It's a bit of a shorter report this week as I think I might have to go into hiding due to a family taking out a contract on me. I'm not at liberty to mention but the surname may be associated with making meat pies!!!! Depending on whether I survive the attempted assassination attempt, I’m hopeful of providing a report next week.
