Lynda Allan, Toko Training Manager, is excited that Toko Training is staying in Milton - thanks to an uncanny situation that meant the workshop and house they are moving into, were up for sale at the same time. The house and the workshop, in High Street, fit their needs well, with the house to be used for learning spaces and offices, and the workshop for Forestry training (theory and practice). The move will take place sometime in mid-late May, so it will be all hands on deck getting everything set up. Lynda said she is happy to have her appeal for new site resolved so quickly, and she is looking forward to settling in to the new premises.
We still require 1-2 families/hosts who could offer a warm and friendly home to Japanese students for two weeks in August. If you would like to be that family/host or would like any further information please contact: Mary Hart ph 4178620 (Tokomairiro High School) or email: mary@tokohigh.school.nz
Recently a group of students attended the GRIP conference in Gore
Generosity: Willingness to use what you have been given (time and resources) on behalf of those you seek to influence.
Responsibility: We all have a responsibility to develop what we have and help others to live well. Integrity: A commitment to truth and honesty in dealings. People: Every human being is of great significance, and has a purpose to fulfil.
Students attended elective workshops on topics such as leadership responsibilities, supporting others, connecting students through events and making school a great place. They partnered with students from other schools and learned what it means to be a leader in today's world. Some great ideas have come from the conference and we look forward to seeing positive change for all.
Meeting at the Four Square car park at 8.45am on Good Friday 18th April, and finishing at the Heritage Church. All are welcome to walk with us (or walk a part of it).
There will be a short service then Hot Cross Buns and a cuppa will follow.

Term One has drawn to a close and what a fantastic term it has been! Our new cohort have settled into life at Tokomairiro seamlessly, and it’s been a pleasure to see them embrace the many opportunities on offer.
We’re enjoying teaching and learning in refreshed and reorganised spaces including the upgraded science labs and reshuffled maths rooms and homerooms to create a designated Year 7 and 8 area.
Across the campus, change is visible: exteriors have been repainted and our new signage is beginning to appear, bringing a real lift to the environment.
Term One has also seen a surge in sporting involvement across the school. It’s exciting to see so many students getting involved, with new sports like ki-o-rahi and squash introduced this year. Athletics Day was a fun and successful event and we’re proud to announce that Tokomairiro has been crowned Otago Schools Bowls Champions!
As we reflect on this term, I’m reminded of the whakatauākī:
“Kaua e whakaiti tō rāe ki te maunga teitei – never bow your head to a lofty mountain.”
This speaks to the strength and perseverance our students have shown as they challenge themselves and support one another. It sets a powerful tone as we head into Term Two.
As the cooler weather sets in, please take a moment to check that your child has warm uniform options.
Students may wear:
The Tokomairiro soft shell jacket or Code sideline jacket (available from NZ Uniforms)
A plain black or navy jacket (non-branded)
Please note: Hoodies are not part of our uniform and will not be permitted.
Shoes must be plain black and fully covered this is essential for safety in workshops and science labs. Thanks to KidsCan, we are also able to provide warm jackets and school shoes to those who need them with us.

House Competition
Last week I shared provisional house points for Term One, but these didn’t include the results from Swimming Sports. The final tally is in:
1st – Ayson
2nd – Ross
3rd – Reid
4th – Malcolm
While the order remains the same, there are just a handful of points between the houses it’s anyone’s game heading into Term Two!
There will be two Ministry of Education-approved Teacher Only Days this year: Friday 30th May and Friday 14th November.
School will be closed for instruction on both of these days.
Please note these dates in your calendars.

Over the past few lessons, Year 12 and 13 students have been investigating the properties of pastry and pasta through hands-on practical activities. These sessions focused on manipulating ingredients to understand their functions such as how fats contribute to flakiness in pastry and how gluten development affects dough elasticity.
As seen in the photos, students engaged in shaping, filling, and assembling pastry-based items, applying a range of culinary techniques including cutting, layering, and decorating. Through this process, they explored cooking terminology such as lamination, docking, and
The sessions emphasized health and safety in

SOUTH OTAGO’S TRAVEL PROFESSIONAL
This year was the first time we entered a team into the Kī-o-Rahi competition in Dunedin. Our team consisted of enthusiastic Year 10-12 students, who embraced the opportunity to engage with Te Reo Māori and Te Ao Māori through the game of Kī-o-Rahi. What’s the story behind Kī-o-Rahi?
Kī-o-Rahi is more than just a sport it stems from the legend of Rahitutakahina and Tiarakurapakewai. This traditional Māori game serves as a living tribute to our ancestors, our language, and the richness of our culture.
We had an outstanding run, winning all our matches leading up to the finals. In a closely contested final, we went head-to-head with He Waka Kōtuia a team of students from Kings and Queens High Schools. While we didn’t take home the trophy, our students walked away proud, inspired, and buzzing from the experience. Here’s what some of our players had to say about the competition:
We had an incredible amount of support from the community last week with the opening of our new store. We loved having you all in to see what we have done with the space.
Congratulations to Cane who was the winner of our giveaway! He will receive $50 store credit to spend in the shop.
We are also incredibly excited to announce that we have funding available to donate to local community groups. We are now accepting applications for a share of the profits we have made over the last 6 months in our shop. Application forms are available in store now. Applications close the 9th of May, with funding decisions made by the end of the following week. We are so grateful to you all for your support which allows us to give back to our community. We could not do it without you.
Playing Ki-o-rahi was a fun and new experience for me. A few things I enjoyed were learning how to play, the meaning of the game, and meeting new people. It was challenging, but I was proud of our team’s effort, coming second overall. I look forward to playing again later in the year. I am very grateful for Whaea Clare sharing her time with us so that we could experience it all. - Shilah Milligan
I enjoyed playing Kī-o-Rahi, especially the culture of the game. This was my first time playing Kī-o-Rahi, so a lot of learning was involved. It's a very physical and fast-paced game which I enjoy. Our team was quite strong and only lost one game, which was against He Waka Kōtuia in the finals. They had a very experienced team, but we always played to the best of our abilities to give them a good challenge. I can't wait to play later on this year and win regionals! - Saffron Healey
I liked the action and fast pace of the game, the Kings & Queens (He waka kōtuia) senior team was the hardest to verse and I’ll be playing again in term 4 - Tyrese Gemmell I found Kī-o-rahi very enjoyable, engaging, and fascinating sport. I learnt the rules of the sport and how to play properly. I found Kings & Queens High School (He waka kōtuia) the hardest to play against, because of the size difference and they seemed more experienced. I will play again in term 4 because I believe we can go to regionals next time with experience and practice. - Rory Hancock

First up thank you to the wider Milton community for support of Poppy Day last Friday. We raised almost $700 for our Welfare Fund which is a fantastic effort. With Anzac Day rapidly approaching, if anyone is available to assist with street Marshalls, let the RSA know.
Also congratulations to Wayne Te Ranua and Danny McKay who won the 2m Wood Raffles which will keep everyone warm over winter.
In regard to our highly successful Super Sports competition, reminder that the scores will be covered up so now the game of misleading has commenced full bore. Also first game this weekend is playing on Thursday night so get your picks in.
Finally April is the month for love with wedding anniversary featuring prominently. Congratulations to Bruce and Jenny Good who celebrated 50 years of wedding bliss. Poor Jenny that's more than three Parole sentences. Along with another happy couple celebrating six years. Love is definitely in the air.

The excitement is building towards this weekend. Before that Toko took on Heriot in the match of the round with Heriot providing Toko's sternest test of the season.
Heriot roared out of the gate and quickly established a handy 12-0 lead after 10 mins. Toko managed to gain some ascendancy in both territory and possession and were fortunate to be down 22-17 at halftime through tries to Kaleb Hayes and Keegan Ferguson. Toko took control in the second half in a torrid physical battle to finally subdue a determined Heriot team 32-25 victory to Toko which made it 3/3 to open the season.
For Toko Harry Greer and Keegan Ferguson stood out on the forwards along with McLeod Glaister and Damon Clement strong games in the backs.
Next week is our 125th celebration with a huge weekend planned commencing on Friday night welcome through to Sunday afternoon Golden Oldies match where guys relive their outstanding careers. On Saturday there will be Junior Rugby commencing at 10am followed by Toko Seniors and Premiers both taking on Crescent in two outstanding games with two vitally important trophies wanting to be home at Toko. Weekend should be memorable. -The Judge
