Wednesday 12th February 2025
Last year, some fantastic young people came to us at Project Bruce to see if we could help them get some more, awesome cycling facilities into Milton. One of their dreams was a Pump Track (a bit like a BMX track). We have been doing some research and have found the best location for this to be the flat section on the Abercrombie Street side of Moore Park - But we only want to proceed with this project with the blessing of the community!
We have already spoken to the residents surrounding the park and the feedback has been overwhelmingly supportive! What will it look like? Something like the picture below. We are talking with an experienced designer from Christchurch who specialises in building these tracks. It will be grass and asphalt, possibly with some easy-care planting to enhance the park and make maintenance easy. Council is happy for us to do our homework and come back to them when we have dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s.
Our vision is to add to the existing cycling features at the park, so children (and adults!) can progress from the ministreets, to the flatter track and then onto the bumps. Project Bruce is seeking external funding for this track, so the cost will not lie with the community. We are still in the early stages of this project and we want to make sure we do it right.
We are now reaching out to the community for some feedback on this idea. If you have any - please message or email us (either to chat or make a time that suits). Or you can pop into the Tokomairiro Hub if you are passing and we’ll likely be there! Thanks so much for your help, the project Bruce team!

Inspiring Excellence in Education, in Character and in Life.
I hope this message finds you all well as we settle into the rhythm of the new school year. Yesterday marked my return to kura after my trip to the UK and it was heartwarming to see our students fully engaged in their learning. Walking through classrooms, I was impressed by the positive energy and focus on mahi.
The school is looking great with the addition of our new signage, and I’m excited to see how we can continue to enhance our environment throughout the year.
I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Bill McClure and Kris Simpson for their exceptional leadership during my absence. Their dedication ensured a smooth start to 2025 thank you both!

Property Update
Great news! The refurbishment of our science labs is nearly complete, and hopefully they’re set to reopen next week. The upgrades have transformed the spaces into bright, modern environments, ensuring better learning opportunities for our students.
While not all the work we would have liked to have done was in the budget, we’re thrilled with the improvements made so far and excited to see the labs in action again.

Over the Christmas break, two of our 2025 Gateway students, Dakota Coleman and Sioeli Pulu, completed their work experience at Alexandra Holiday Park, assisting with the Kids Club a free service for families staying at the park.
The programme ran six days a week for two weeks, offering two-hour activity sessions twice daily. Dakota and Sioeli played an active role in planning and organising activities, working closely with children and families to foster positive relationships and develop new skills. They also faced and overcame unexpected challenges, such as managing a sudden turnout of 200 children on the second day and adapting to fluctuating attendance numbers each session.

Are you interested in hosting international students while they are studying at Tokomairiro HIgh School?
Do you have room in your house for a young person from Japan?
Are you proud of our town and country?
Activities included river walks, rock painting, dance parties, karaoke, scavenger hunts, and daily colouring competitions. Both students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and have expressed interest in returning to help run the programme again.
The school has KidsCan uniform items (shoes and jackets) available for students who may need these. Please contact Guidance Counsellor (kim@tokohigh.school.nz).
There is also a supply of snack items available in the office (fresh fruit, muesli bars, fruit cups, crackers etc) for any students who need a top up during the day.
We have had a promising start to our bowls and squash squads for 2025. This week saw 22 sign-ups for the Toko Jacks. Our first training on Monday was a hit! Special mention to George Stark who took on a coaching role and taught our new players about the game. Our squash squad will be starting training next week in preparation for a tournament against South Otago juniors at the end of March. There is still time to sign up for the squad. Email Mrs J at kylie@tokohigh.school.nz.

Toughen up on Truancy. It is not ok to be late or to be off school without a justified reason. If it is truancy, tell the school. If your child refuses to go to school, find out why. Take their needs seriously and support them to be happy at school. Talk with the Dean, Counsellor, Assistant or Deputy Principal or other parents to make a plan to help your child.

BOOM!!! It's here, starting on Valentine's Day this Friday is not only a day for romance, but our Super Sports Comp kicks off. So get along and get your picks in to try knock off Marty, I mean beat him in the picks and get your name on the much coveted Bert Pringle shield. This promises to be our best sports comp yet based on those lined up to enter. Not only that but our Fishing Comp is on 22nd February with funds being raised for Otago Rescue Helicopter which does an amazing job. It's unfortunate they are called on so often. Get in behind for some fantastic prizes thanks to our sponsors.
As you can see the RSA is continually chocked full of events, it's hard to keep up with everything going on. Also our Joker draw is rolling along with Icky looking into his crystal ball predicting we could be at the maximum amount in approximately four weeks.
Finally I've had plenty of requests to verify a couple of stories about a member who is looking at starting a walking group. When asked if this was true, it was revealed this member has been keeping themselves fit in order to fend off the advances of the opposite sex. Legal team will not let me reveal names.

In December, the club convened at the Waihola Tavern for an enjoyable Christmas lunch. Thank you to the staff, and for arranging a separate space to listen to the guest speaker. That was much appreciated.
Craig Scott grew up and went to school in Milton. He left to go to Otago Polytechnic where he studied for a Bachelor of Design (Communications), graduating with distinction. He was offered a position at Tuhura Otago Museum and has remained there, working full time, currently as the Head of Exhibitions and Creative Services. He has the ability to envisage a finished exhibition and has produced some impressive work. Travel has broadened his artistic ability and allowed him to inject new ideas into his work as well as develop an international network of contacts.
As well as his work at the museum, Craig has become involved with Guild, a group which allows local craftspeople to get together and create an outlet in Lower Stuart Street. They take turns to man the store and sell their own creations with a small commission to cover costs. His own interest in Self Destruct Studio is where he can let his imagination go and create what he wants.
On top of that he is involved with The Design Kids, a group that encourages young people with talent, giving them the opportunity to develop their skills and learn what they can do in the future. It is great not only to see what Craig has achieved but what he is giving to others in opportunity and direction.
Craig was thanked by Lex Adam and given a gift.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 18th February at 10 am at the RSA hall. The speaker is Joyce Beck from Kaitangata. She was Principal of Kaitangata School for many years and has long been a strong supporter for the district.
Committee please meet at 9.30 am.
