Support foster care youth by joining the KING Concert Club By Carola Rivera A teenage boy takes the stage—he sits down in front of a keyboard before an audience of community leaders. He confidently plays a melody with his right hand, keeping a steady bass line with his left. When he’s done playing, the room is raging with applause. This happened at the seventh annual Music Matters Luncheon benefiting Kids in a New Groove, a non-profit that provides free, weekly music lessons and mentorship to over 200 youth in foster care. The organization gathered community members and supporters Nov. 13 for a special occasion—the announcement of the 2020 KING Concert Club line-up. The KING Concert Club aims to bring new supporters and donors to the organization by providing one-ofa-kind performances from renowned Texas artists along with opening acts provided by KING students. Tickets are available in a range of membership levels

through the end of 2019 or as soon as memberships sell out. All proceeds from the KING Concert Club memberships provide central Texas youth in foster care with one-on-one, long-term mentoring through weekly, private music lessons. The organization’s mission is to create a consistent and nurturing environment to empower youth in foster care to transform their futures through music and mentorship. Kids in a New Groove seeks to change the grim statistics on youth aging out of foster care, where many children eventually face homelessness or incarceration due to lack of community resources. As foster children move between placements, a KING teacher moves with each child, providing a consistent and stable mentor. KING also helps children build life skills, accountability, goal-setting, and perseverance. Most notably, for the past five years, 100 percent of KING’s eligible students graduated from high school and 95 percent went on to pursue high education or enlist in the military. This is compared to the national average of less than 50 percent of youth in foster care graduating from high school. Music mentorship plays an integral part in each student’s success. Members who join the 2020 KING Concert Club receive exclusive access to intimate concerts at top venues throughout Austin. Club members will also witness the benefits of KING’s program with performances by students and their music mentors before the showcased artist. For more information on the KING Concert Club, sponsorship and more, visit kidsinanewgroove.org. Chuy’s Christmas Parade kicks off the holiday season On Saturday, Nov. 30, families will gather at the State Capitol for the 31st Annual Children Giving to Children Parade benefitting Austin Police Operation Blue Santa. The spirited parade features a procession of giant balloons, marching bands, vintage cars, celebrities and floats to usher in the season of giving. Attendees are invited to bring new, unwrapped toys and to kick off the Holiday season. Austin Police Operation Blue Santa provides gifts, toys, and gift cards to over 5,000 families in need during the holiday season. This achievement is possible with the goodwill and support of the Austin Community. At a designated time during the Parade Procession, all units will stop to collect the toys. Santa’s Helpers will line the parade route and help spectators give their toy. All toys will be distributed by the Operation Blue Santa Program to another child just in time for the holidays. The history of the parade begins with Chuy’s co-founder Mike Young. In 1987, Chuy’s & KLBJ-FM started an annual toy drive held at the two Chuy’s locations in Austin to benefit the Operation Blue Santa Program. Two years later, Young came up with the idea of a parade in hopes of collecting more toys. In 1989, a couple of weeks before Christmas, Chuy’s volunteers canvassed the downtown area, passing out fliers, asking everyone to bring a toy to work with them on a specified day and the parade would come along, pick up their toy and deliver it to Blue Santa Headquarters.

Kim Mcguire Photography The following Thursday, Chuy’s friends and employees on bicycles along with the Grand Marshal, Joe Sears of Greater Tuna; Marcia Ball on the back of a flatbed truck; a Fire Truck; and a Giant three-man Santa Claus paraded up one side of Congress and down the other, stopping to pick up toys along the way, including a giant Teddy Bear from Governor Bill Clements. That year, the parade and the next day’s Toy Drive at Chuy’s with KLBJ-FM nearly tripled the amount of toys raised from previous years for Blue Santa. To date, the parade has collected over a quarter of a million toys for the children of Central Texas. The hour-long parade starts at the State Capitol at 11th and Congress, moving south on Congress all the way to Cesar Chavez, ending just north of the bridge.
