Letter from the editor

Well

Toddlers To Teens Parent TV Show is nearly 1 year old. It has been a rollercoaster ride. Last month we celebrated the 1st anniversary of my son Nicholas’ kidney transplant which he received from his father. Nick is doing great, living a full life and living his dreams. Nick was inspired by the Pixar Animation movies to live his dream and loves making movies. As Steve Jobs said,, “have the courage to follow your heart and your intuition...” Nick is certainly doing that and inspires me to live a full life. He’s kidney condition hasn’t stopped him from living life to the max and he’s taught me to have the courage to do the same. I knew starting TTT TV would be a challenge with my family circurmstances but I proved it can be done and I hope to inspire other parents and support them to follow their dreams too. It’s been a massive learning journey and

will continue to be so with the ever changing technology. But thanks to people like Steve Jobs, I can work from anywhere in the world, even if it has been by the hospital bedside of my son. I’d like to thank the Panel for their contribution to TTT TV as they volunteer their time to make up our free resources for you. They have been a great support network for me also. A special mention to my fiancé Glen who supports me and allows me to be the person I want to be. Thank you to all the contributors of this magazine also. We hope you enjoy this edition and we are proud to be your support network and your village. Take care of yourself and have a grateful day! Melissa Groom PS. Look out for our first Ebook from the Panel Experts of TTT TV. Out next month!

The Teenager

– The Hormone Storm

Adolescence is a time of rapid and dramatic change. With the exception of infancy, the amount and speed of physical growth and change for adolescents is greater than in any other time in a person’s life.

During these years of growth for the child, anytime from 10 years to 20 years of age, parents and/or other adults in the WSHJL VM WYV]PKPUN JHYL MVY [OLZL JOPSKYLU ÄUK [OL` ULLK [V adapt their parenting style to suit the changing needs of teenagers. While experiencing adolescent behaviour you may often feel some or all of the following:• inadequate, • unappreciated, • unheard, • unhelpful, • confused, • angry, • loss of your ‘babies’, • lack of control over the situation, • left out, • uninformed, • undervalued and • concerned for the future of your child.

4

These feelings can lead to stress or unease for you, as well as through the whole family. You may feel your home has turned into a battle ground or a place of unrest instead of a place of harmony. Being aware of the changes that are happening for your child, and seeking help, support and current information PU [OPZ ZWLJPÄJ HYLH ^PSS HSSV^ `V\ HU HIPSP[` [V \UKLYZ[HUK and manage these years more effectively. Children entering adolescence face three big challenges during this developmental stage:• Biological (physical changes) • Psychological (changes in thinking and feeling) • Social (changes in relationships) Here are some suggestions on what you could be doing differently now to better weather the ‘storm of hormone’: • Have you noticed any physical changes in your teen? How are they feeling about these changes? Think of some positive comments you can make to help your teenager feel good about the changes that you have noticed. This will help build up positive self-esteem for your child as well as allowing your child to see you are still interested in them and what is going on for them now. •

Could you arrange regular one on one time with your teenager doing something you both like together? This will help you and them not feel so isolated or left out, and encourage sharing of ideas, thoughts and feelings about life in general.

5L_[ [PTL `V\ ÄUK `V\YZLSM PU JVUÅPJ[ ^P[O `V\Y [LLUager, ask yourself “What is this really about?” Is this argument really about homework, or is it about the adolescent asserting their independence and their need to have more say in what they do? If you see it

from their perspective, without feeling offended, you are less likely to take things personally and more likely to respond calmly and constructively as issues arise. •

How could you be more sensitive and responsive to your teenager during this time of growth? How could you better understand what they are going through? How could you express your needs and feelings to your teenager without blame, judgement or criticism? In doing this you may allow your child to take in what you are saying, express their point of view and both of you come to an agreement that will more than likely be followed through on.

What changes could you make to your life now that you are having more time on your hands? What hobby could you take up? Have you wanted to do something, like volunteer work but never had the time? What else could you be putting your energy into now that your teenager is growing up and taking less of your time each day?

Have you considered writing things down for your teenager rather than just giving them verbal instructions that they don’t always follow through on? You could create a list or a diary for them with what you would like them to achieve. You could also leave thank you and I love you notes to bring a smile to their face when you are not around. You could even implement a reward system when their list is complete. In this way there is no chance of them forgetting (as teenagers do). It also allows them to be responsible for the consequences of lists not being followed through on. Taking all this into account may avoid \UULJLZZHY` JVUÅPJ[

Our Online Canteen is a concept built into a website that is continuously been developed and is based on parents and canteen manager’s needs. 1. How can it benefit parents? It removes the reliance on children to order their own meals or JVUZ[HU[ Z[Y\NNSL [V ÄUK enough pocket change. What is Social Media? Another word, Social Media is a means for the generation X to connect with one another, and to share common interest and to communicate, whether it is Facebook, Myspace, Twitter….. It is like us, the generation Y, where we communicate via the phone or engage in connection through the playground, where else for generation X, the internet has taken over the medium of phone and the playground. As they say, if you can’t win, why not join them? So why not make use of the advances of science and technology, and improve our communications as well. Therefore the question that needs to be asked, to what extend would one allow their kids to dwell and roam the social media platform? And what can we do about it? YOUR PARENTING HAS LASTING RAMIFICATIONS – What are you teaching your child? By Davina Sharry B.Teach Grad Dip ECE

Hi parents. Today’s article starts with an event I witnessed that has always stayed with me, and one I would like to share with you today. Not all that long ago, I watched as a little girl walked up a steep pathway behind a woman I assumed to be her mother. She SVVRLK HIV\[ MV\Y VY Ä]L `LHYZ old and was really struggling to carry three large shopping bags. I was admiring her strength and determination as she did a little walk-run to keep pace with the longer strides of the adult in front of her. She had done such a good job and had nearly caught up, when her mother turned around and snarled, “Look what you’re KVPUN .P]L TL [OVZL ;OLYL HYL things in there that you’re going to squash if you don’t lift them properly!” (UK ^P[O [OVZL \UHWWYLJPH[P]L uncaring and critical words, the woman angrily snatched the bags away from the little girl’s grasp and without so much as a look back, Z[VYTLK \W [OL OPSS ;OL SP[[SL NPYS walked quietly behind her, head down, the words still ringing in OLY LHYZ ;OL SP[[SL NPYS ^VU»[ LHZPS` forget what happened on the hill that day, and neither will I. And the TV[OLY& 4` N\LZZ PZ ZOL»SS UL]LY really know what a hurtful thing she did that day to a little girl who had worked so hard to try to help and please her.

Now let’s imagine how different the outcome would have been for this little girl if the mother in this story had turned around to see her daughter struggling with the shopping bags and offered her help instead of criticism. Imagine if the mother had recognised the efforts of the little girl and congratulated her daughter for trying so hard or hugged her in demonstration of her love and appreciation, before taking the bags gently and respectfully from her, not because the little girl had failed, but because the task was too hard and she cared that her daughter was struggling. The mother in this incident missed a wonderful opportunity to uplift her daughter and help her feel great about herself and what she had achieved. I wondered that day, in general what JVTLZ ÄYZ[ [OL WHYLU[PUN VY [OL ZLSM esteem and behaviour? Assume the role of leader Assuming the role of leader, doesn’t mean being in charge of the TV remote! As a parent, assuming the role of leader means being prepared to look at your responses, the way you handle adversity, and the way you conduct yourself with others. Look at what you have been taught and what behaviours you have accepted as ‘normal’. Your parenting and your self-esteem will be the sum total of what you have learned in your life. Discovering Wellbeing through the Non-Mainstream... The first time the word ‘Depression’ was used to describe how I was feeling was a big shock. I was pretty young and just thought I had been feeling ‘blue’ and that it would go away. After years of mostly dead-ends in Mainstream Medicine, I decided to take look at Alternative Natural Therapies. I had no idea how much this would help me, my family and indirectly thousands of others through my work. I hope to help empower you to listen to your intuition because it’s there to help improve your wellbeing. Could Alternative

Therapies really work?!

I sadly grew up thinking Naturopaths weren’t valid Health Professionals. Boy was I glad to be proven wrong...I long believed that my Hormones were part of my problem. The usual blood tests through my GP showed they were “Normal”, so I didn’t look at this again for years. I sadly PNUVYLK [OH[ MLLSPUN PUZPKL [OH[ [VSK TL P[ >(: HU PZZ\L 4HU` `LHYZ SH[LY 0 ZH^ a Naturopath who found my Progesterone and Oestrogen level were low. Diagnosing this without once ounce of blood –surely it couldn’t be that simple!! I went onto a supplement & noticed a vast improvement within weeks. There were several other issues that were picked up that have made a big difference too.

TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS Trusting your gut instincts is an important part of taking our wellbeing into our own hands. In retrospect, I was trying to tell myself what the problems were related to but fobbed them off thinking it had to be more ‘serious’. It is the accumulation of many small things that can turn into a serious health concern –physical or mental. Don’t brush aside those niggling feelings - they just might be the missing piece to your wellbeing puzzle. Clearly it’s not just ‘one’ thing that can help you stay ‘well’ in all senses of the word but rather several interrelated strategies. Above all empowering ourselves with knowledge, so we can make more informed decisions about our own wellbeing is the key.

‘When you are ready the teacher will appear.’ It is amazing how once you are truthful to yourself and others about your struggles, great new people seem to appear in your life, imparting knowledge which can help you go down a different path. ANTI-DEPRESSANTS –FRIEND OR FOE? Don’t get me wrong, I am not against Western Medicine – it holds an important place in society and Doctors are increasingly working with Preventative Medicine Models, which is very encouraging. It is also pleasing to know that a large component of the Medical University Course is based on Mind body Medicine. When it comes to treating depression and the like with Pharmaceutical Grade Medicines, I am not ANTI, anti-depressants. In fact at one point they played an important role in helping me get out of the depression cycle. They gave me a break from my unhelpful thought patterns, leading to more energy to look at other strategies to deal with the underlying core issue. For many people, especially those with young children – there often isn’t time to ‘work’ on your issues – you just need something to help you get out of bed and get [OYV\NO [OL KH` 0M HISL [OV\NO ÄUKPUN 5H[\YHS ways to be well is better for you long term.

Organize Your Life Staying Organized is also important for keeping depression at bay. In my work, I talk a lot about de-cluttering your house and head. If one is ‘out of sorts’ the other will be too. Conducting regular Clutter Culls needs to become part of `V\Y YV\[PUL ,X\HSS` - mind dumping and getting those zillion and one things down on paper makes the world of difference.

Winter S.A.D’s Like countless others, I’ve always felt ‘worse’ during the long dark, cold Winter months known as S.A.D –Seasonal Affective Disorder - due to a lack of sunlight. I mistakenly thought the relatively small amount I drank was OK. The IRS is an extension of the Australasian Readwell System©1996-2005 and covers a wide range of educational areas (see below) for students and adults (ages 2-70+) in need of remedial help or to improve certain areas of their education i.e. developmental/extension. The fundamental success of IRS is based on the fact that the developer (Dr) Bruce Cruicks has been able to break the process of reading down from 24 steps to just 7 steps. At the same time he has been able to DISCOVER THE PERCEPTUAL CAUSES OF READING DIFFICULTIES and a CURE with a 99.7% SUCCESS RATE. The reading program is UNIVERSITY VALIDATED by Griffith University, Gold Coast, by Professor Merv Hyde. The whole procedure of learning to READ at an age appropriate level takes ONLY 8-12 WEEKS, requiring just 30-40 minutes per day, 5 times a week in groups of up to 10 students. The other IRS programs take a similar amount of time although some take only 1-2 hours. The IRS is also available by internet ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD. IRS covers the ASSESSMENT, DIAGNOSES, REMEDIATION and DEVELOPMENT of: a) READING – basic, remedial, developmental and functional reading. b) SPELLING - remedial and developmental - includes rules and techniques. c) WRITING SKILLS – includes punctuation, grammar, essay planning, writing skills and writing development. d) PRE SCHOOL - assessment and development programs for parents and teachers. e) SMARTFUNKIDZ – fun developmental activities for parents and children (together) aged 1-3 yrs, 4-6 yrs and 6-8 yrs, either individually or in small groups.

f) BASIC MATHS – 20 areas for ages 7/8 years to adult. g) STUDY SKILLS – children, adults, workplace and corporate. h) ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE. – fast tracks the process – children and adults. i) SUPER GRANDPARENTS – developmental (FUN) activities for children in 8 areas. More than 700 activities. j) THINKING SKILLS – children (from age 2), adolescents, adults, business and corporate. All of the above programs are proven over 10 years. NOTE: A full detailed explanation can be provided on each of the above programs. CRUICKS THINKING PROGRAM © B.A. Cruicks 2008-2011

Overcomes the problems associated with de Bono’s 7 hats. Thinking actually involves 74 steps. Only 5-10 minutes per day is required over a short period to greatly develop thinking skills. It is GREAT FUN at school, the home, the office or for the workplace. Pre and post testing is available to verify the thinking gains. GROWING UP SMARTER: From the Early Years© 2010 B.A. Cruicks The book provides parents with 700 developmental fun activities to develop cognitive activity for children aged 2 -7 years.

Have a look at your receipts and bank statements for the last month and try & account for everything. Step 2: Find out where you stand with debt. List your debts, the amounts you owe, the interest rate & the monthly payment. Then, number these debts in order of priority, from highest to lowest interest rate. Review your borrowings to make sure you have the best possible loan for your personal situation. Step 3: Create a budget you can stick to. Use a budget planner and write everything down. Your budget is all about you, but you do need to be honest & include everything that you spend money on. Include the whole family in reviewing your budget as this teaches your children about money as well. Step 4: Get into good money habits. Good habits like knowing when you have money, when you need to pay things off, and when you need to cut IHJR JHU OLSW `V\ Z[H` VU [YHJR 4H`IL `V\ ULLK [V ZL[ up regular payments for your bills. David’s Gift Sometimes life hands you a challenge, that at the outset seems insurmountable, but later you realise was in fact a gift that changed your life. When our son David was about two years old we knew he was different from other children. He had an extremely limited vocabulary for his age. He found interaction with other WLVWSL KPMÄJ\S[ HUK HU` VWWVY[\UP[` to play or interact with his peers, usually ended in an altercation or tears – usually the other child coming off second best! Although a generally loving child at home, playing with other children was extremely challenging for him.

In late 2008, at the insistence of a friend, I started to write a book about our experiences. The book began as a ‘’how to’ guide’, I thought I would share those strategies with other parents, detailing the steps we took from David’s diagnosis to achieving a University degree.
