UNIT CYPOP 1 Work with babies and young children to promote their development and learning.

Assessment Criteria 1.1 Explain the pattern of development in the first three years of life and the skills typically acquired at each stage.

You need to put together information in a format of your choice that demonstrates your understanding of the different stages of development across the age ranges 0-3 years. This must include some real work place examples of what you have seen children do in your work place.

Assessment Criteria 1.2 A / Explain how development and learning are interconnected Submit a written piece of work that demonstrates your understanding of the EYFS areas of learning. You must talk about the 3 prime areas and ensure that you explain in detail about each one. You will also need to write briefly about the 4 Specific areas (key points are the best way otherwise you will be there forever!!)

Following this you need to photograph one activity undertaken with your key children (no children in the photograph) and using your EYFS guidance explain how that activity meets the 7 areas of learning to help young children develop, then give an explanation on how all areas of learning are interdependent on each other.

B / How and why variations occur in rate and sequence of development and learning For this criteria please look at rate and sequence of development and write a brief explanation to show what you understand them to be and why it is important that you know what the difference is.

Rate of development – how quickly a child acquires skills, remembering that development is holistic (please give examples) Sequence of development – follows 4 main points (explain each point and give examples) 1.

Simple to complex actions Head to toe (development progresses downwards) Inner to outer (actions near to body leading to actions away from the body) General to specific responses (e.g. baby whole body excitement, pre-school has learnt to control facial expression so may smile of laugh)

C / That learning may take place in different ways (learning styles, learning difficulties)

You need to explain the 3 different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) providing work place examples to support your knowledge.

D /The importance of play Provide an account of why play is important in the lives of babies; use your EYFS guidance document to support you. You need to also explain the characteristics of effective learning and how they are implemented. Also make reference to your handout on Schema.

Assessment Criteria 1.3 Explain the potential effects on development of pre-conceptual, pre-birth and birth experiences.

Think about factors such as  Smoking  Alcohol  Maternal ill health  Poor maternal diet  Substance abuse  Assisted birth  Birth trauma You need to explain how each of these areas can have an effect on a babies development and explain which are pre-conceptual, pre-birth and birth experiences.

Assessment Criteria 1.4 Explain the impact of current research into the development and learning of babies and young children.

For this research you need to look at current research into the development of babies brains and explain how this links to today’s practice with the children who attend our settings. You may want to look at research into the Romanian orphanages, sensory exploration or langue rich environments such as babbling babies.

Assessment criteria 2.1 Undertake assessments of babies or young children’s development and learning needs.

You need to observe a baby on a long observation sheet and prepare adult supported plans, contribute to their learning story and unique child profile and to the room plan. Your assessor will meet with you to review your understanding of the planning and assessment cycle where you will be asked to share your knowledge of

the child through a professional discussion. They will observe you leading a session based on your interactions with the children and from the plans that you have developed. You must ensure the session you plan covers both indoors and outdoors to show how you fully meet the curriculum, especially sensory provision and heuristic play (see attachments). .

Assessment Criteria 2.2 Demonstrate in own practice how the indoor and outdoor environment is responsive to the development and learning needs of babies and young children.

This will be covered through observation of your practice in supporting baby’s normal daily routines both indoors and outdoors.

Assessment Criteria 2.3 Plan play based activities and experiences based on assessments to support learning and development.

Covered through observation of your practice, plus you need to provide adult led plans that support babies during indoor and outdoor play sessions linked to the long observation sheet completed in the above criteria 2.1.

Assessment Criteria 2.4 Demonstrate in own practice the provision of play based activities and experiences to promote development and learning that are tailored to babies or young children’s needs.

Observation of you leading your adult supported plan linked to your observations above, you will also need to set up the room to support the other babies development.

Assessment Criteria 3.1 Explain the benefits of the key worker / person system in early years settings.

You need to submit a piece of written work that shows your understanding of the key person role, use your EYFS and the welfare standards to support you. Also explain your job description and the importance of your role in a childcare setting in regards to a baby’s emotional well–being. Please also refer to the setting baby care guidelines.

Assessment Criteria 3.2 Explain how babies and young children learn and develop best from a basis of loving, secure relationships with carers and with key persons in work settings.

Assessment Criteria 3.3 Analyse the possible effects of poor quality attachment on the development of babies and children.

You need to complete a small piece of written work on attachments (research John Bowlby for this) and explain how poor quality attachments can affect a baby’s development e.g.  Their ability to settle and take risks in their play  Poor emotional security  Poor social development skills  Effects on short or long tern mental health  Effects on relationships with others Assessment Criteria 4.1 Engage sensitively with babies and young children giving them time to respond.

Observation of you supporting the babies during their normal daily routines this needs to include a session on tummy time that is linked to the attached hand-out. If you attended the in-house baby physical training you also need to attach your training certificate and a brief explanation of what the training covered and how you have implemented it.

Assessment Criteria 4.2 Engage in playful activity with babies and young children.

This will be covered through observation of your practice whilst you are supporting the babies during a sensory play session, hand-out attached.

Assessment Criteria 4.3 Explain how babies express their emotions, preferences and needs and demonstrate responsive care in own practice.

Provide a small piece of written work that explains your understanding of how babies express emotions and preferences e.g.  Differentiation in types of crying  Reaching for preferred carer  Turing eyes or head away from something You assessor will also observe you in practice as you support babies during their normal daily routines.

Assessment Criteria 4.4 Explain why it is important to manage transitions for babies and young children.

You need to submit a written piece of work that explains what transitions are / mean to babies. You will need to put together a list of different transitions babies face at your setting and explain how these are supported within your environments. Please also attached the legislation document attached related to the settings policy. Make sure you also include the importance of positive relationships at times of transition and the role the key person has at these times.

Assessment Criteria 4.5 Explain when and why babies and young children require periods of quiet to rest and sleep.

This will be covered through an oral questions, please make notes to explain how children and babies are given opportunities to rest in your setting and why this is important.

Assessment criteria 5.1 Explain the primary importance of carers in the lives of babies and young children.

Small piece of written work to show your understanding of the importance of carers in the lives of children and babies e.g. their parents Assessment Criteria 5.2 Demonstrate in own practice how to exchange information with carers.

You need to gather a witness statement to support this criterion on you are sharing developmental information to a parent or sharing information on the child’s well –being during their day at the setting. Also an Infant record sheet work product can be attached here.

Assessment Criteria 5.3 Evaluate ways of working in partnerships with carers.

Think about how you involve families in their child’s life at your setting e.g.  All about me  Completing first PLOD  Parents evenings  Parental questionnaires And evaluate how effective these are in encouraging and supporting partnership working.
