dIY spa: From Head to Toe

While it is nice to treat yourself and get spoiled every once in a while (who doesn’t love a day at the spa?), making your own beauty products at home is often not as difficult as you may think, in fact, many of the ingredients are probably already in your cupboard or fridge. For those times when you don’t have a whole day to commit to pampering, and just want to address a couple problem areas, we have you covered with some DIY recipes, embracing everything from your head to your feet. >

HAIR MASKS

Sometimes it is nice to give your hair a bath in some all-natural products, as the chemicals in shampoo and conditioner can be harsh on your hair after many repeated uses.

Coconut and Honey Coconut oil is great for dry-damaged hair, and helps it to look fuller, shinier and healthier.You can make a mask for your hair by mixing 1 to 2 tsp. of virgin coconut oil, 1 tsp. honey, 5 drops of peppermint essential oil, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Put the paste on your damp hair, and leave it for about 20-30 minutes. Shampoo your hair really well to make sure it is all out, and you’ll be all set.

Avocado and Honey This yummy looking hair mask will help keep your hair soft, shiny and frizz free. Mix together 2 tablespoons of honey and 1 medium avocado, put it on damp hair and leave it for 15-20 minutes (you can put on a shower cap or even use saran wrap to hold everything in place). Rinse it out and shampoo and condition your hair as normal.

FACE MASKS

The skin on our face is pretty much the only part of our body that is exposed to the elements, daily and on a year round basis, so it makes sense that it needs lots of care. Test out these masks and watch your skin become brighter, more even and less dry.

Turmeric Turmeric is a spice that is used regularly in India as part of the beauty routine, as it has many different benefits for skin. This mask is as simple as mixing together plain yogurt with a couple of tablespoons of turmeric. Stir it until it forms a paste, spread it on your skin and let it sit for 20 minutes, then rinse with a warm washcloth.

Turmeric is a great way to brighten skin (note: turmeric can stain fair skin, but it fades away after a couple of hours.)

Turmeric has numerous benefits including:

• helps to treat acne due to its antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

• helps fade acne scars.

• helps with inflammation.

Oatmeal Not only does it make for a delicious and filling breakfast, but also it can make your skin look and feel better. Mix together ½ cup hot water, 1/3 cup oatmeal, and let them settle for two minutes. Mix in two tablespoons of plain yogurt and 2 tablespoons of honey. Spread mixture on your face, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.

Oatmeal can benefit your skin in the following ways:

• great for treatment of acne, as it helps remove oil and bacteria from your skin.

• helps with dry skin.

• acts as a natural moisturizer by removing dead skin cells.

• known to help improve skin tone and texture.

Avocado This is good for those with dry skin: mash ½ of a ripened avocado with two tablespoons of honey and apply it to your face. Let it sit for 20 minutes or so before rinsing it off.

Avocado benefits your skin by:

• helping to remove dead skin cells, due to it’s high amount of Vitamin A. • helps with wrinkle prevention by removing toxins from skin.

• helping to moisturize your skin.

LIP SCRUB

These tasty recipes are great for exfoliating all the dead layers off your lips to ensure they remain healthy, smooth and kissable.

Sugar Scrub Mix together a tablespoon of brown or white sugar, a little bit of olive oil and put it in a small container. Rub this scrub on your lips, then let it sit for about one minute, then wipe it off with a washcloth. Put some lip balm afterwards.This scrub can be used about once a week.

Coffee Scrub This is a little more gentle then the sugar scrub. Take one tablespoon of coarsely ground coffee, 1 tbsp. of olive oil, mix them together well, then apply to your lips and gently rub it in. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then rinse off with water.

Tip: You can use a toothbrush to apply the scrub to your lips. It is also helpful to give your lips a quick scrub daily with the brush, which helps keep them soft.

HAND MASKS

How much do hands deserve to be pampered? A lot. How effective would your day be without those oh-so-useful appendages? Not very. So, give your hand a little love with these easy to make masks.

Potato Mask Boil 2 to 3 potatoes, mash them up and add a little milk to them to form a paste. Apply the warm mixture to your hands, and leave it there until it cools. Wash off, then apply hand lotion. While potatoes may seem like an odd thing to put on your hands, they are actually great for anti aging, tightening and brightening.

Carrot Mask Grind one carrot and mix in 1 tablespoon of sour cream and 1 teaspoon of olive oil. Apply this mixture to your hands, leave it for 20 minutes, then rinse off. Carrots, much like potatoes, have many skin benefits: they are full of nutrients and vitamins, which help the skin to keep looking young and vibrant.

FOOT MASKS

Our feet need lots of special treatment, especially during the warm summer months when we tend to wear lots of sandals and walk around in bare feet all the time. If your feet are feeling dry and cracked, try out some of these homemade foot masks to help them feel refreshed, smooth and ready to carry you through the day.

Oatmeal Mask Get a large bowl, and in it mix: 2 cups of rolled oats, 1 cup of all purpose flour, ½ cup of honey and ½ cup of olive oil. Depending on the consistency you end up with, you can add more oil if it is too thick, or more oats if it ends up being too runny. The first step is to soak your feet in warm water, which will help soften them up.

You can then exfoliate your feet (perhaps with the sugar scrub you already made up for your lips), after you have exfoliated and rinsed your feet off, take some of the mask and spread it on your feet.

Allow it to soak for 30 minutes or so, then rinse them off.

Mint Lime Foot Soak Mix together 2 cups of Epsom salts, the zest from one lime, 2-3 drops of essential peppermint oil and 2 to 3 drops of lime essential oil. To use it, sprinkle it into a footbath tub filled with warm water, and let your feet soak away.

How to Properly Clean Your

MAKEUP BRUSHES

You have a brush for contouring, one for blush, one for foundation: each one serves a certain purpose. But just as important as using the right brush to achieve just the right look is making sure your brushes are being cleaned properly. This is something that should become a regular part of your beauty regime. Bits of makeup, dirt, oil, even bacteria, can all get trapped within the tiny bristles of the brushes, so it is important to keep them clean to avoid the clogged pores and breakouts dirty brushes can cause.

To get a bit ahead of the game, spritz your brushes with daily brush cleaner after every use; then about once a week or so, do a deeper cleaning.

Start by running your brushes under warm water, which will help rinse out all the loose makeup. Spread the bristles apart ensuring you get in between them all, but don’t pull too hard on them, or it may loosen the glue that attaches the bristles to the handle.

Fill your bowl with warm water and stir in a dab of shampoo and then swirl your brush in the water.

Rinse out the brush under the tap again, getting out the shampoo.

Keep repeating the second and third step until the water runs clear.

Use the clean cloth to wipe down the brush and reshape the bristles. Gently pat it to get rid of some of the moisture.

Lay out your brushes on a clean cloth and let them dry fully before using them (takes about two hours or so for them to dry fully)

You can get shampoo made specifically for brushes, but the gentle or baby shampoo should work just as well.

Let’s admit it: We’ve all dreamt of wearing the perfect swimsuit. We are conditioned, as women, to want to play the lead role in an iconic bikini moment, whether it’s a onesie, à la Pamela Anderson’s Baywatch days, or a full-out version of Halle Barry’s ‘Bond Girl’ look. As the swimsuit season approaches, two Canadian designers, Tatiana Paratchuk and Julie Khinkis, have created a label to make those visions a reality. I sat down with the makers of VENAO Swimwear to get at the heart of their own swimsuit dreams:

In the Spotlight MB: HOW DID IT ALL START? TP/JK: Both of us grew up watching our mothers design and create garments, not only as a creative expression, but also out of necessity. We both had the most interesting wardrobe from our peers and grew up with the notion that fashion is an image. VENAO was born out of that passion for creativity and desire for a challenge since fashion design has always been part of our lives. One night we started sketching swimsuits that we wanted to have but just couldn’t find anywhere. Many hours later, we decided to create a few samples so we booked a trip to New York to shop for fabric and created our first few suits. A few weeks later, we heard there was a fashion show in Toronto which was short a designer. We scrambled to create more pieces and completed a photoshoot to submit our collection for review. Once the shots hit social media, the response amazed us and we booked the show. It was the perfect way to transition from a hobby to a business.

MB: IS IT EVER TESTING TO WORK AS A TEAM? TP/JK: We work really well together. We are both super persistent.

We aim high and there is never a dull moment. People love our energy and offer to collaborate. We wear all the hats in the company, from design to production, from marketing to distribution…Tatiana is the creative designer and focuses on creating the product. Julie is the brand manager, dealing with marketing, distribution and events. We discuss every project together and do not proceed unless it fits within our plan. We both sketch out the idea then Tatiana works on the pattern, which sometimes takes a few tries to get the fit exactly as we want. She makes a sample piece and we bring in a few girls for fitting. When the fit is just right, the design makes it into the new collection.

MB: I’VE SEEN YOUR SWIMWEAR ON THE RUNWAY – THEY ARE DEFINITELY DISTINCTIVE AND GARNER A LOT OF ATTENTION. IN YOUR OPINION, WHY? TP/JK: Our swimsuits are meticulously designed to hug a woman’s curves elegantly. When we design an item, we do so with a particular body shape in mind and we market it appropriately. We import our fabrics from North America and Europe, as it holds the color better and therefore will last longer. We are also very selective about the hardware that we use. This season we are moving towards more rose gold-plated accessories to prevent rusting. We strictly monitor production of each garment and hold the factory to the highest standards. Each piece that leaves our factory is a gem and will make a woman feel like a goddess.

MB: “GODDESS” IS DEFINITELY THE RIGHT WORD: EVERYONE I’VE SEEN WEARING YOUR SWIMWEAR LOOKS LIKE A SUPERMODEL. WHAT DOES THE TYPICAL VENAO CUSTOMER LOOK LIKE TO YOU? TP/JK: Our target customer is a confident, fashion-affluent woman aged 20-50 who is a socialite in her community and therefore strives to always “turn heads”. She makes an effort to take good care of her body and enjoys showing it off. This woman

spends time vacationing at resorts and summer destinations, where she must look her best. She follows designer trends and seeks out exclusive pieces to stand out.

MB: FROM YOUR OWN COLLECTION, WHAT “STANDS OUT” FOR YOU?

Julie: My favorite piece is the Aria. It is classy and luxurious with braids and a golden clasp. I also love the cleavage it creates and the overall design is so unique, totally me. This was the first VENAO suit I wore.

Tatiana: My favorite piece is the Bandeau. It was the very first piece I made and it got the most attention. It’s fun and playful because of the various ways you can wear it. Also its multi-structural for different body shapes and different bust sizes can wear it with confidence. I’ve always been fond of smaller bottom so I love the Brazilian trio bottoms, which gives minimal tan lines.

MB: FROM AN OUTSIDER’S PERSPECTIVE, I’VE ALWAYS BEEN CURIOUS TO KNOW WHAT IT TAKES TO BECOME A DESIGNER: IN YOUR OPINION, WHAT DO YOU NEED TO ‘MAKE IT’?

TP/JK: You need good intuition and a great team. There are many costs in the first year, lawyers, materials, and equipment and of course the cost of trial and error. As long as there is passion and some startup capital, launching a label can be exhilarating.

MB: WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF YOUR PROFESSION? TP/JK: The most challenging aspect is the lack of time we have to put towards this business. We both have full time jobs and juggling to keep everything moving. We love the challenge that comes with every area of the business and thrive on accomplishing every step.

MB: HAVE YOU FOUND IT DIFFICULT TO START A FASHION LABEL, PARTICULARLY SWIMWEAR, IN CANADA? TP/JK: Both of us have lived in Toronto since our early teens and we are fortunate to be in such a diverse city. The eclectic mix of creative minds propels ideas into reality. Simple conversations over a coffee turn into business ideas and collaborations make it happen. As a business, swimsuit prices are commonly really high digits, while the amount of material needed is small. This cost difference allows us to produce in Toronto, at a premium price, use gold-plated hardware, and purchase high quality fabrics. This is why we’re fortunate that VENAO was born in Canada, and this is where we will continue to make all of our products.

MB: WHAT’S NEXT FOR VENAO? TP/JK: There are so many ideas for VENAO going forward. We are entering the international market in distribution and are invited to be a part of some really interesting events. New products will be launching and we are working on creative partnerships that are sure to make a buzz. Details cannot be revealed!.

must have been seven or eight the first time I saw a beauty pageant on the television set in my family home. I remember thinking that I had never seen so many beautiful girls at once.

Some were short, some tall, they varied in skin color and tone, but they each had a unique ability to mesmerize – a radiant beauty, both inside and out.With the final crowning of one girl, in a nation where queens are not had, but made, I was hooked: “Before Miss Canada I wasn’t very skilled at makeup application or hair styling, so I really had to start practicing and looking up ideas on YouTube helped me a lot!” says the current Miss World Canada titleholder, who placed amongst 40 other girls. “Beauty regime wise, I, of course, always wash my face and moisturize. Other than that, sometimes I wear no makeup at all and sometimes I use all my skills from YouTube for special events!” Annora Lee, who is now preparing to compete for Canada in Miss World, the oldest pageant which rivals against Miss Universe and Miss Earth for the most prestigious beauty contest in the world notes her commitment and attitude towards beauty are what likely won her the crown: “My biggest commitment was eating healthier and exercising before the pageant. I had been very active in basketball in high school and early university but began getting caught up in my studies and was less active. I saw this as an opportunity to get more fit so I took three classes a week - boot camp, spin, and yoga. It was so fun and I feel great…As for competing in Miss World Canada I went in with the attitude that no matter what, win or lose, I was going to have a fun week and make some new friends. I really think that positive outlook helped me be successful, I didn’t feel stressed or nervous- I was just being me!” 22-year old second-runner up, Pooja

Anand, shares the sentiment of confidence as a key component to beauty: “I think the best beauty tip any girl can take and own on a daily basis, is confidence. Nothing is more beautiful or radiant than confidence. It speaks so loud, and with confidence, comes the ability to be comfortable in your own skin, which in turn, makes others feel the same. The second best to confidence would be to smile. I believe everyone looks the most beautiful when they smile because it exudes their personality, especially when one smiles with their eyes and the best part, we all smile in the same language!”

For Pooja, competing for the title of Miss World Canada for the second time has found pageantry to be a remarkable platform to give back while raising awareness and sharing knowledge about important causes that are close to her heart in a unique way. She still maintains her beliefs despite the general perception of beauty pageants being antiquated and anti-feminist: “For me personally, my platform is to increase confidence in young women, and to inspire the youth to achieve their dreams while spreading the message of selflessness and kindness. Pageantry, as just about any other industry has its stereotypes, however, if you do your research and get the facts straight, you will find that most pageant contestants are intelligent, wonderful women who genuinely want to make the world a better place through their service and commitment. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the fashion, competition, and beauty aspects of it as well, but what really hones me into getting involved, is the difference one can make in the lives of others through compassionate outreach.When else are you able to be a leader for young girls, a positive role-model, public speak [sic], travel, and engage others while wearing beautiful gowns and looking your best?”

“I think the best beauty tip any girl can take and own on a daily basis, is confidence...”

The idea of using a beauty pageant as a form of civic engagement seems to be at the forefront ideology for “pageant girls”, as they are called: “My Miss World Canada experience taught me a lot about myself and our world. One person displaying a single act of kindness can make a difference in our world because if we all do one kind thing, eventually there are a lot of people doing a lot of good. I am inspired by the enthusiasm and motivation of young people and I have learned that my crown is a symbol that demonstrates strength and empowers young girls and boys to work hard to achieve success,” notes Camille Munroe, Miss World Canada 2013. Her greatest beauty tip is “using a straightening iron to curl your hair! Simply curl your hair in an outward motion to create ringlettetype curls then using your fingers, comb through the curls to obtain a nice easy going wave that lasts all day into the night!”

With her cropped hair and bold attitude, for 20-year old national finalist Veena Singh, pageantry is less about conventional beauty and more about paving the way: “I was surprised [to be a national finalist], mostly because people don’t think of me as a “pageant girl”. But I really do believe in the slogan, “beauty with a purpose”, so I was honoured to be a part of a competition that had such idealistic views. I’m a little bit edgier than most pageant contestants. Being in the high fashion industry, my style is more inspired and influenced by abstract art and street style.

I’m a little bit more experimental, a little bit more androgynous, and a little more…wild!” She maintains vitamins and hydration are essential to beauty: “All the makeup in the world won’t help you if your skin (or hair/nails) is the underlying problem. And drink plenty of water!

Hydrated skin glows naturally and makes you look youthful.”

Other secrets of the stage: Exfoliating both body and face once per week and applying aloe vera and baby oil leading up to pageant night: “I have been doing it for years!” says contestant Laura Giorgiana Balan. Applying plenty of butt glue (yes, butt glue is real thing) – which sprays out of an aerosol can and requires vigorous rubbing with baby wipes to remove – lets swimsuits stay in place. Talc-based baby powders double as a cost-effective alternative to volumizing dry-shampoo, and height can be feigned by applying black electrical tape around a colorful platform shoe, as it “blends right into the stage!” Perhaps the best secret of the queens, however, is feeling beautiful, whether you’ve won the crown or not.

So, which room is it in your house?

You know, the one that makes you cringe each time you walk into it? The one you try to keep your guests out of. Every household has one. For this family of five it is the main floor bathroom. The walls are bare and the counter top will instantly transport you to the early 1990s. The space lacks any kind of style or inviting décor. After dealing with two flooded basements and the construction of a deck, fence and driveway, it is no surprise that these homeowners haven’t had the time or the energy to tackle the thorn in their side.

With two adults and three small children, the main floor bathroom sees more action than the Vegas Strip. It is a place for brushing teeth in the morning, last minute make-up and Princess Elsa braids.

It is the first aid station, the potty training room, and on the weekend, with a little help from a flashlight or two, it is transformed into a planetarium. With the hand towel always on the floor, globs of toothpaste on the counter, and hair ties littered everywhere, there is only one word that can be used to describe this area of the home disaster. How can one space serve all? This bathroom needs to be a place that is kid friendly, yet has adult appeal.

Desiring a place that is both practical and appealing, the homeowners enlisted the help of Wendi Pelfrey, Interior Designer and owner of That’s Fab Design. From charming to glamorous, That’s Fab Design has been imagining and creating alluring designs in and around the Niagara Region since 2006. “I studied Interior design and I worked with local builders for many years. I always wanted my own business and one day I decided to go for it.” says Pelfrey.

Pelfrey, a former professor with the Interior Design program at Niagara College, keeps up to date on the latest trends by actively participating in design shows and networking with other designers.

Pelfrey confesses that every so often she seeks inspiration at HOUZZ.com, the largest collection of interior design and decorating ideas on the Internet, featuring over 100,000 photographs of exquisite designs to choose from.

Pelfrey is skilled at designing all types of rooms, but admits her favourite spaces to work with are bedrooms and entire homes. “I like designing model homes and coordinating every room to flow from one space to another,” she explains.With 25 years in the business, it’s no surprise she is an award winning designer. Pelfrey was the recipient of the 2013 Best Custom Designed Home from Niagara Home Builder’s Association for “Something’s Gotta Give,” in Wainfleet, ON and 2011 Best Interior Decorating Model Home/Suite awarded from DRT Custom Homes and Renovations for “The Hamlin” in Niagara-on-the-Lake, ON. Regardless of the size or budget of the project, Pelfrey treats each and every client with the same degree of attention, effort and enthusiasm.

What are some of Pelfrey’s many secrets to staying on top of design challenges? “I am extremely organized. I take an iPad with me to every client meeting and when I go shopping,” Pelfrey states.

“Working with great trades people and having on-going conversations with them is the key. As a homeowner working with a contractor it’s communication, communication, communication.” No project would be complete without a few snags and setbacks along the way, which Pelfrey expects and plans for. “I love the challenge that having my own business brings. I work well under pressure,” she says adding that the last minute snags don’t frazzle her. “Electrical issues and material delays pose the biggest issues. I use a lot of wallpaper in my designs and it always seems to be on back order or it comes in damaged,” Pelfrey says. This is where being organized helps her to avoid setbacks; she shops and scouts out potential pieces and orders materials in advance.

While prepping the walls for painting, it was discovered the wiring for the light fixture was not centered over the vanity. This posed the biggest challenge with the renovation. “I had to re-think the design and select a light that was on a bar in order to center the fixture,” says Pelfrey. This modern chic light from Home Lighting in Niagara Falls, ON, adds flair to the space, while the bubbles imprinted in its face keep in line with the beach theme.

For the walls of the restroom, Pelfrey chose Benjamin Moore colour of the year, Breath of Fresh Air, and complimented it with Clay Beige on the ceiling. “Light and airy colours are in for this season.

It is not only beige and white, but a splash of colour,” says Pelfrey.

“Painting the ceiling adds interest and ties in with the theme I was after,” states Pelfrey. “Ceilings have been white forever, I sometimes like to consider it as another wall.”

Although being a designer gives Pelfrey access to exclusive stores that are not open to the general public, she is an expert at finding great pieces in everyday places. She often chooses items from local places, big and small, situated right in your back yard. For this design, Pelfrey chose the ladder and shadow boxes from Ikea, while the glass containers and wicker baskets were purchased from Target. “These selections are a fun way to provide storage for all of the family’s essential toiletries like creams, baby wipes and band aids,” says Pelfrey.

The glass twine jugs, wicker baskets, and rope balls are from the Nate Berkus Nautical line at Target and coordinate perfectly with the theme of the bathroom.

Her secret to finding treasures to fit nicely with her themes is to “look where you least expect it.” When the initial mirror Pelfrey selected for above the vanity was too large, she thought outside of the box and found a mirror resembling a porthole at a locally family run establishment, Allan’s Landscaping Supply Depot and Garden Centre. “Don’t exclude certain shops because you never know what you will find there,” adds Pelfrey.

While searching for the perfect works of art to finish off a room, Pelfrey acknowledges the amount of thought and vision that is required to make the space complete. “Art is personal. Selecting the right pieces helps to develop the theme of the space. For this bath20

room, I chose a Sand dollar picture from Home Sense as it adds an additional splash of colour,” she says. Pelfrey takes the splash of colour concept to a new level as she is often referred to as the designer with the pink hair– characteristic of her creative personality and confidence. “I love the colour pink, it is my signature piece. My hairdresser put it in my hair and it has stuck with me,” recalls Pelfrey.

Pelfrey offers this advice to individuals wanting to avoid common mistakes people make when renovating and designing. “Don’t purchase furnishings before you plan the whole space. When you have bits and pieces then everything is just a mishmash. Plan it from start to finish.” she suggests.

What makes it so easy for Pelfrey’s clients to jump in with both feet? Her two most endearing qualities: her enthusiasm for design and her fun-loving personality.“My clients trust me whole heartedly to take the project to completion,” she states. “I have been fortunate.

All of my clients have liked what I’ve suggested.” Pelfrey certainly made this bathroom renovation enjoyable and stress free. “It’s more than just a relationship between a client and a designer. At the end of a project I have a brand new friend. That is the biggest thing that I can be proud of,” concludes Pelfrey.

“With this nautical design, I wanted a refreshing and relaxed feel.

Using the beach theme just felt right when I saw the space. It’s a busy household with three small children. This space is now fun for the children, but adult friendly too. Guests will love using it,” says Pelfrey. All the homeowners need to do now is add a few Muskoka chairs, brew a fresh pot of coffee, and grab the sunscreen. You can almost smell the ocean air!

HOW ITALY INFLUENCED AN ICON: The Style of Audrey Hepburn

ften considered the epitome of grace, Audrey Hepburn was and remains - an icon to be reckoned with. With her classic beauty and feminine charm, she captivated millions through film and thousands through her helping hands. In the twenty year anniversary of her death, just as the ‘Audrey a Roma’ exhibit dedicated to showcasing Hepburn’s long-standing relationship to Italy closes, the world continues to admire the unparalleled beauty that exuberated from her mind, the kindness that leapt from her heart, and the goodwill that came from her soul. What she is perhaps most admired for is her fashion sense, however Hepburn’s style came from an amalgamation of her troubled past, present work, and her philosophy of life: “For attractive lips, speak words of kindness. For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people. For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry. For beautiful hair, let a child run their fingers through it once a day. For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone. People, more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed. Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms. As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands, one for helping yourself and the other for helping others.”

Born in 1929 Brussels to a British father and a Dutch Baroness, Audrey spent her most formative years as a ballerina, dancing throughout the Second World War. Her fame as a film star, however, began in 1953 with the film Roman Holiday. Filmed entirely in Italy, she played the part of Princess Ann, a guarded royal who yearns to break away from her otherwise precautious and structured life. In this light, Hepburn herself was introduced to the world, and introduced the world to Rome: “With that movie, [she] became the icon of a jaunty Roman lifestyle, touring the world on a Vespa scooter.” Twice after, Hepburn would return to film in Rome; first, to film War & Peace in 1956 and subsequently, three years later, for The Nun’s Story. These years shaped her fashion sense considerably. >>

ollowing the birth of her first son, Sean, in 1960, Hepburn met and married Italian psychiatrist, Andrea Dotti. Along with their new son, Luca Dotti, the family of four swiftly settled into Rome. In the role of mother and wife during the near-twenty years she left the limelight and embrace la dolce vita, Hepburn was “a woman who [loved] to take long walks with her dogs and take her sons to school.”

Growing fond of the siesta, Hepburn adopted the Roman lifestyle during her life in Rome: She would often be found walking her Yorkie, Mr. Famous, in the streets of Parioli, eating in Piazza Navona, and adopting the Sunday “pastarelle” tradition, while befriending famed actors Alberto Sordi and Renato Rascel: “If the photographers happened to capture her, perhaps it might be in a little road near the Campo de’ Fiori in the moment her husband was waiting for [his] mother-in-law to open the door for Sunday lunch.”This describes Hepburn’s laissez-faire attitude to daily formality, which translated into her daily fashion choices at the time - a simple dress with a belt cinched at the waist.

During her eleven-year marriage to Dotti, his influence similarly bore witness to the emergence of a highly introspective Hepburn who had come to terms with her troubled past, which undoubtedly gave way to her work ethic. Hepburn herself notes, “If you want to get psychological, you can say my definitiveness stems from underlying feelings of insecurity and inferiority. I couldn’t conquer these feelings by acting indecisive. I found the only way to get the better of them was by putting my foot down, by adopting a forceful and concentrated drive.”

It was perhaps in the time she spent in Italy that Hepburn realized her deep compassion for others, which she spent the rest of her life pursuing as

a UNICEF International Goodwill Ambassador, her self-proclaimed greatest role. While her psychological insight may have been influenced by Dotti, her iconic fashion can certainly be attributed, at least in part, to Rome: It was within the character of Princess Ann in Roman Holiday, in fact, where Hepburn sought the formations of her beloved style, including the white blouse which found its way as a wardrobe staple throughout her life. Similarly, in this role, the bold accessories she often preferred to gaudy jewelry emerged. She wore wide-brimmed hats, large dark sunglasses and often donned scarves tied around her neck, or covering her hair, as had been customary at the time in Rome. The influence Italy had on her style, however, was reciprocal: The post-second world war era Hepburn found herself in showed the re-emergence of Italian fashion, undoubtedly due to the influence Hepburn and other key actresses held.

For instance, her “GG” monogramed Gucci handbag quickly gained popularity, as Hepburn was often seen carrying a classic and practical bag. She simultaneously made the house of Salvatore Ferragamo a household name, with the notable kitten heels and ballet flats Hepburn had been so fond of coming from Salvatore Ferragamo himself. At that time, he was simply a shoemaker from Bonito: “[Hepburn] remained a loyal customer for the rest of her life, wearing his heels as a young starlet and his blue and white driving moccasins in her sixties.”

While Italy helped launch her acting career, Hepburn today is not remembered merely as the actress of her decade, nor credited simply as a fashion icon, but continues to be, for millions, the hallmark of human compassion and goodwill. It was her inaugural grace, humble nature and most importantly, charity towards others that propelled her and will sustain her presence far beyond us today, a presence profoundly influenced by la dolce vita she so openly embraced in Rome.

THE GROWING TREND OF

PLASTIC SURGERY AMONGST MEN BY: MARIANA BOCKAROVA

“When I first started practicing, the feeling amongst plastic surgeons was that if you had a man come see you for plastic surgery, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to send him to a psychiatrist,” says world renowned Canadian Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Frank Lista. As a founder and past President of the Ontario Society of Plastic Surgeons, a member of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and the Past President of the Canadian Society of Aesthetic (Cosmetic) Plastic Surgery, Dr. Lista, who operates out of his own clinic, The Plastic Surgery Clinic, observes a new trend, present and growing: Cosmetic surgery amongst men.

Recently released statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) show that the number of gynecomastia, or male breast reduction, procedures performed has increased by 8% to over 19,000. Similarly, other procedures that top the list include liposuction, with over 41 000 American patients served in 2011; rhinoplasty at a rate of over 24 000; blepharoplastry, otherwise known as cosmetic eyelid surgery, at 22 905 patients, and facelifts, at just over 10 000.

These numbers still pale in comparison to those of women -- for instance, liposuction saw 283 669 female American patients last year -- but the once-obsolete male market is growing, and fast. With a total of close to 900,000 cosmetic procedures, and a 121% increase in plastic surgery since 1997, it seems the cosmetic surgery amongst men truly is accelerating.

Though these numbers are only reflective of the American market, Dr. Lista notes the similarities: “The single most common thing we see men for is liposuction...then gynecomastia. For some reason, the prevalence is going through the roof...there are papers suggesting the prevalence of gynecomastia (excessive male breast tissue) is at 60%! The other things we see are noses and facial surgeries, like eyelids and facelifts.” Each year, amongst the 1200 major operations Dr. Lista performs, he estimates that a third, or about 400, are for male patients, though he foresees the rate rising to 50%.

Why the increase? As Dr. Lista puts it, “We went from the [visiting a psychiatrist] extreme to now, where almost a third of my patients are men. The reason for that is because I think men are just as concerned with how they look as women are. We used to think that they weren’t, but they are. You can pick up Vanity Fair or Elle, but you can also pick up Men’s Health or GQ or Esquire. Men are just as interested in clothes and shoes and hair and skincare as women are, so that’s been a big, big change.”

Though the ages of male patients Dr. Lista sees varies, starting from an 18 year old, to a 78-year old face lift patient, the gap, however drastic it may seem, according to him, is fairly typical: “If you look 26

at a graph of how old people are when they have plastic surgery it’s a bimodal distribution:You have young patients in their 20s undergoing “type change” surgery [meaning they] don’t like their bodies the way they are and want to change them. Then, nothing happens in childbearing years. Then, we get a second peak in late 30s, early 40s... the “restorative patients,” whose life has changed them, either they have wrinkles or want to improve something.”

And “improve something” they can. With operations ranging from the practical to the extreme, the options are there: A recent trend which has begun to circulate (no doubt partly due to the rise of Movember), is a procedure to help thicken one’s moustache, in which patients undergo “ follicular unit extraction” in order to build a fuller moustache. In this procedure, hair is harvested from other parts of the body (including the scalp), and implanted in the area between one’s mouth and nose. The moustache has come to symbolize maturity, virility, power and prestige. This particular procedure can also be replicated to help thicken chest hair. Another sign of male virility, a masculine voice, can similarly be created “under the knife”. In a procedure promised to deepen male voice, titled fat injection thyroplasty, men with high-pitched voices can deepen them by having a surgeon inject fat into their vocal cords. Aside from pec and calf implants, abdominal etching is also used to exaggerate a man’s physique. In this procedure, intended for men who have less than 2 centimeters of “pinchable body fat”, patients can undergo liposuction to help create distinct lines (though this is most popular amongst young men).

Regardless of age, Dr. Lista maintains that operating on males, specifically, is an art: “I think the worst thing you can do for a man is to over-operate on their faces. I’ve seen some American celebrities who I’m horrified to see, celebrities who look freakish or feminized.

The worst thing you can do is to feminize a male face, give them too much upper eyelid show, make things too tight, and pull their hairline back.The taboo for me is to over operate on people, make them look weird, fake, and tight. My motto is to create plastic surgery that looks natural. I think it’s a success if no one knows you’ve had plastic surgery. If a patient says, ‘everyone thinks I changed my hair color,’ I consider it a success. Good plastic surgery is not detectable. Bad plastic surgery you can see from across the street.”

Though the statistics of male plastic surgery may be up and the taboo down, there are still considerable risks to be aware of if considering plastic surgery. Be sure to see a qualified plastic surgeon and do plenty of research beforehand.

Cruelty: How We Can Support This Standard in Niagara

We all love to look and feel our best on a daily basis. Often the beauty and cosmetic products we purchase appear to be harmless, however, few of us know the truth about what really goes on in the production of these commodities. Cruelty-free beauty products are trending in our societies, as we become increasingly aware and concerned with the unethical treatment of animals during the testing procedures used to make our affectatious cosmetic adornments.   33

ANIMAL TESTING IN CANADA

THE BODY SHOP

Canadian laws require that animals be used in medical testing, but it is not required that they be used in studies for cosmetics. However, many studies continue to use animals as subjects when testing ingredients, which will then be used in cosmetic products.

While the practice is not illegal in Canada, there are non-profit organizations, such as the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS), which act as Canada’s voice for animal welfare. The CFHS particularly promotes compassion and the humane treatment of animals. Other associations such as the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) specifically oversee the ethical use of animals in science in Canada.

Although these groups’ mandates are to protect animal welfare, many corporations still use legal, yet inhumane methods to test human products such as cosmetics, on live animals. It is therefore important that we as consumers of these products are informed as to what our favourite brands’ ethical standards really are, and if we are ready to commit to switching to authentic “cruelty-free” beauty products.

The Body Shop is a widely recognized international brand of skin care and cosmetic products, which all have been approved by the British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV), as meeting their Humane Cosmetic Standard: the highest regarded standard in the cosmetics industry. The Body Shop was the first international company to meet these requirements.

Their ongoing commitment to animal welfare has been recognized by animal rights activist groups, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who granted The Body Shop with their prestigious “Proggy” award.The Body Shop also works in collaboration with, and helps fund, animal rights activist groups to raise awareness for the unethical treatment of animals in laboratory testing.

THE LEAPING BUNNY PROGRAM

We, as consumers, have the power to stand up for causes we believe in, and make changes accordingly within our community. By supporting cruelty-free brands and requesting their products, we can create change in our local shopping choices to ensure we are offered selections that are produced with healthy, highly ethical standards.

The terms “not tested on animals” and “against animal testing” can often be ambiguous and misleading. The labels placed by certain brands on their products do not necessarily guarantee that the product is actually free from animal testing, as the laws and regulations differ by countries’ federal governments.

Thankfully, due to the “Leaping Bunny Program” by the Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics (CCIC), consumers now have a way to guarantee that the brands they support are genuinely against animal testing. The symbol of the Leaping Bunny certifies that no new animal testing has been used in any phase of product development by the company, the research laboratories, or the suppliers of the ingredients.

TOM’S OF MAINE Tom’s of Maine is cited as a “landmark case” in cruelty-free beauty and personal hygiene products. One of the company’s core beliefs is in the ethical and humane treatment of all living things, and therefore refuses to test on animals.

In the United States, most beauty and personal hygiene products must be tested on animals, unless they have been petitioned to be both safe and effective without using these methods. Tom’s was successful in gaining approval by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) without breaking their pledge for cruelty-free beauty, by taking on a case against them without going through the extensive procedures usually required in similar circumstances. By providing relevant research from credible sources of other scientific researchers in the field, Tom’s won the case by proving that what they manufacture is just as safe and effective as other brands on the market.

verything that is inside and outside of one’s self is beautiful. When we look through the eyes and mind of a child everything is not only beautiful, but everything is possible. Until a child is corrupted in his/her thoughts and beliefs and “learns” to judge, compare and compete, everything is viewed in its purest form, and its unique beauty is appreciated. We have all witnessed a child seeing something for the first time; it is viewed with wonder and fascination because a child sees only the beauty in everything. But the moment a child learns to compare, the child begins to see things in a distorted way. This is when he/ she loses sight of the truth, and pain begins to take its place. When a child learns to compare, rather than see the innate beauty in all things, he/she starts to question his or her self. “I’m too short, “I’m not pretty enough, “I’m not good enough, “I’m not smart enough, “he or she is better than me, “without these clothes, or this makeup I’m not beautiful enough…”, all of these comparisons, and judgemental ways of thinking, bring only discouragement and pain.

Every single thing that was created whether it be human, plant or animal has its own beauty. We were created from love, and we were all created beautiful. There are billions of different plants, flowers, animals and people; each one is different, but each one has its own unique beauty. We must look at each

one individually for what its true beauty is, instead of comparing one to another.

Remember that there is no one thing that is more beautiful than another. The greatest understanding and evolvement is when we realize that everyone and everything is unique and beautiful in its own way. If you want to see your own true beauty and feel comfortable in your own skin, stop listening to others, and comparing yourself to others.

When you look at yourself inside and out without comparison or judgement, you will not only discover your own beauty, but you will begin to notice the beauty in all things that surround you. It often takes a maturity and evolvement to “unlearn” some of the things that have corrupted us along our journey, but once we clean up some of these distorted “learned” beliefs, we can begin to live again with the same peace, acceptance and love we did as a child. Often children are more evolved than many adults, they view the world for what is good in it, not what is wrong with it.

As you are reading and looking at the pictures in this magazine, look and read without judgement and comparison, and see the truth and beauty in everyone and everything. Some people may have different styles or taste than you do, but this is what makes our world so interesting… imagine how boring the world would be if we all looked, walked and talked the same… kind

of a frightening picture if you think about it! It is our unique beauty that makes this world so exciting, interesting and colourful.

Get excited and begin to rediscover not only the beautiful you but the beauty in everything created – everything and everyone in this universe is beautiful and has a special gift to contribute – just open your heart and see things for what they are.

rom the dawn of time, there have always been healers.

Those that believe in the healing power of the world around them. Hippocrates, a Greek physician living over 2400 years ago, was the first to delve into this concept, and ever since, it has remained at the core of which naturopathic medicine revolves. The practices have obviously changed in the last several thousand years, evolving to include things such as botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutritional therapy, acupuncture and lifestyle counseling. Just in the last decade, it has become a more widely accepted form of medicine; people have begun to embrace the idea of being more in control of their own health, and more informed about how their bodies work.

Dr. Ana Gabriela Lara, one of Niagara’s own naturopath’s has been practicing naturopathy since graduating from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2004. She has been practicing out of her office at 69 Queen Street in St. Catharines for 9 years, and will soon be moving to a new location at 2 University Circle (the clinic will be operating out of there by mid September). She notes that the new location is one her patients will be sure to love just as much

as she does. I recently caught up with Dr. Lara to chat all about naturopathic medicine and the journey it has taken her on thus far.

Q: Can you talk about naturopathic medicine and how it differs from traditional medicine?

A: “Basically, naturopathic medicine is a form that covers all methods of alternative medicine, we are like the general practitioners of natural medicine. The best way I can describe the difference, is that we aim to treat more of the underlying cause of a condition. So for example, headaches are often due to pressure changes or vitamin deficiencies, so rather than just give something that is going to take the pain away, what I want to do as a naturopathic doctor is to always look at what the underlying reason is, and continuously aim at balancing that person and monitoring their state of health.”

Q: Can you talk about your background and how you became a naturopath?

A: “I actually studied at Brock University and did my undergrad in biochemistry. I was always thinking about going into health sciences, as well as considering conventional medicine. Then I worked at a health food store, and I liked the approach very much. I ended up finding an advertisement for a naturopathic college in Toronto, and it just completely caught my attention. I researched it, and I just thought, ‘how amazing that you can practice medicine this way?’ and I completely fell in love with it.”

Q: Are there areas that you specialize in?

A: “I don’t necessarily agree with specializing as a naturopathic doctor, because I see people holistically. For me, because I’m always looking for the underlying cause, there are so many causes for any disease. Areas that I tend to treat a lot of patients in are skin issues, digestion issues, cancer, hormonal issues, a lot of anxiety and depression, and a lot of mood disorders.”

Q: Is naturopathic medicine something that all people can benefit from?

A: “Definitely. I do believe it is useful for every life stage, whether it is to support, maintain, balance or prevent.”

Q: Are you finding that more and more people these days are seeking out naturopathic alternatives?

A: “I do. I’ve been practicing for close to ten years and it’s so much more accepted and so many more people know about it. I think when MDs are actually referring patients, that says a lot. They look at it as a piece of the puzzle, which is how we can all work together.

Yes, you find resistance at times, but overall, people are so much more aware and open.”

Q: What do you think the catalyst was for this change in attitude?

A: “I think its education. The more that people learn and the more that people become involved in their health, then they are going to begin to look at different avenues and figure out what else they can do. We are all moving towards that. We are more conscious of our choices, what we eat, what we drink, and what we expose ourselves to. Honestly, even things like what we watch and what we listen to, all those things make an impact. With how much is out there now, and through different sources of media and more accessibility, people are becoming more educated about it.”

Q: What would a typical first appointment involve if someone were to call you up for a consultation?

A: “I guess it would depend on what their main concern is, but once I find that out, as well as their medical history and their family history, there are basic questions I usually ask to every single patient.

And they are: what is their energy level, are they tired or sleepy, what is their sleep quality like, are they getting enough sleep, and if there are any digestive issues.With women, I always want to find out what their cycle is like, whether they are on birth control or not, their mood and their sense of well being. When somebody is beginning to get to a place where they might get sick, there is often a change you will see. So aside from those questions, I do a bit of a physical just to help me put together all the pieces of the puzzle. It’s pretty individual, it changes, but a typical first consultation would go like that.”

Q: Is naturopathic medicine helpful for conditions that are considered long-term?

A: “I think it’s actually where we thrive. Because we work on lifestyle and the overall state of health of the patient, when you are dealing with chronic pain, when you are dealing with high blood pressure or cancer, you always need support to go through that and regain your health. So that is where I think naturopathic doctors are brilliant. To me, I think it’s the part of the puzzle where we really fit into the entire medical system.”

Q: What would be your five main health tips?

A: “I would say, clean eating, that’s important. Maybe 80/20 rule of eating clean and that means little to no processed foods, and I know not everybody feels like they have time, but it’s about priority.

Another one would be exercise. Move…whether it’s dancing, yoga, running, cycling, whatever it is that you like, move. People don’t move enough. We are very much stuck in our desk jobs. Our bodies are made to move. And I actually think, what you don’t use, you lose.

Sleep is another huge one. People tend to not sleep very well, they go to bed really late, or often watch TV, or fall asleep watching TV, so there tends to be a lot of disruption of sleep. Probiotics is a food I think we should all have, not necessarily every day, but at least a few times a week would help immensely with digestion and overall resistance. And essential fatty acids, I don’t think people get enough of them.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like to talk about?

A: “I think regardless of who your doctor is, having a good relationship with them, and being able to open up to them in significant, and that’s something I always strive for. No matter whether it’s your oncologist or your MD, always look for somebody that you actually feel comfortable, safe and actually heard by, that’s when medicine starts, so it’s that connection that is very important.”

o you toss and turn at night, wake up every hour or have twitching legs and a brain that just won’t stop? We have all experienced these sleepless nights before – if not on a regular basis. Unfortunately, sleep is one vital component of life we simply can’t always control and counting sheep doesn’t always do the trick. And although a hiccup in your sleeping pattern is generally a sign of stress or a natural side effect to a busy lifestyle, an uneven sleeping schedule is not something to be taken lightly or overlooked.

A lack of sleep can wreak havoc on your mental, physical and emotional appearance and well-being. Eyes become puffy, heads become foggy and your mood can become irritable and irrational.

Though you may attribute your restless nights to the stresses of day to day life, an obstructed sleep cycle could be the sign of a more serious health issues that a second or third cup of coffee just can’t quite fix.

Affecting almost 1 in 10 people, obstructive sleep apnea is one of the most common sleep disorders in the world and is known to disrupt the sleep patterns of over 10% of North America – though most are undiagnosed. This chronic disorder causes people to stop breathing repeatedly as they sleep, due to compressed and closed airways preventing the air from getting into their lungs. This causes sleep to be disrupted and presents as continual wake ups during the night.

When left untreated, sleep apnea can be the silent trigger to a range of severe ailments, from diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity to even stroke, heart attack and death.

Scary enough, the symptoms can seem ordinary; excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, poor concentration, irritability and morning headaches. Wayne Gowrie, a sleep and Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) Specialist at Medelife Healthcare Services in St. Catharines, Ontario says that though sleep apnea is incredibly common, many people tend to misdiagnose their symptoms and disregard seeking help.

“Apnea is a sensation of airflow and you can stop breathing when you become obstructed,” said Gowrie. “It can happen 100 times an hour; sometimes it can happen five times an hour. It’s not nice when you wake up and you can’t sleep.You’re miserable and you’re irritable and you have an array of symptoms you can get.”

The solution? CPAP – a therapeutic treatment that continually administers positive pressure air flow to hold open the obstructed airway that is preventing air flow and you from falling asleep.

Gowrie said that whether your sleep apnea is severe or not, CPAP can make a difference.

“If you come in and you’re feeling like you’re always tired, you’re complaining of restless sleep, you are always feeling like you have no get up and go, a physician might say ‘well it isn’t severe apnea but let’s see if the treatment might help you’,” said Gowrie. “’Let’s try it and see if it makes a difference to you’ because often times it will.”

But Gowrie said that people should not try to self-diagnosis themselves with sleep apnea. With an exceedingly large amount of incorrect information online and circulating in communities, the first step is to go to a physician or a local sleep clinic so you can be diagnosed properly before further steps can be taken.

“Unfortunately there is a lot of outdated information and assumptions,” said Gowrie. “Take snoring. Not everyone who snores will have sleep apnea and not everyone who has sleep apnea will snore. But no matter how severe, sleep apnea should not go undiagnosed. The most severe side effects that come with untreated sleep apnea include stuff like high blood pressure, heart attack, strokes, diabetes. So there are very serious consequences of not getting your apnea treated.”

Nonetheless a CPAP machine can be costly, with prices starting at $860 and fluctuating according to the attachments you may want or need. But, Gowrie said that because the machine has been proven as top of the line for treating this ailment, funding is available to ease the pain – and cost .

“Because [CPAP] has been proven as the gold standard level of treatment, there is Ministry of Health funding that can help go towards purchasing the equipment,” said Gowrie. “This can alleviate some of the financial burden.”

But Gowrie said people must be aware that this is not a cure, but only a really helpful solution.

“There is no current cure for obstructive sleep apnea,” said Gowrie “Does CPAP control it? Yes it controls it. Does it cure it? No. Some surgeries are effective – and it can certainly help and you can benefit - but there is no cure. We can control the apneas, we can eradicate the apneas, but once you stop treatment and CPAP therapy you can go back to what you were before.”

Though CPAP therapy is the gold standard for treatment, there are other options available that can help you catch some z’s.

“Oral appliances can be prescribed by a dentist or orthodontist,” said Gowrie. “And weight loss and exercise should always be used in conjunction with the treatment. When we look at who we are as a society, we are just becoming a bigger and heavier society.Weight loss is a helpful component to maintaining sleep apnea and improving on it.”

Though sleep apnea has been found to affect 77% of overweight adults and excess weight has been linked to sleep apnea development and severity, weight loss is not always the solution.

“Even slim, very thin people come in with obstructive sleep apnea and there is no weight loss to undergo – they don’t have 100 pounds to lose – so that is not always the issue,” said Gowrie. “It’s a matter of finding out what is best for you.”

Along with weight loss and management, doctors and therapists suggest removing electronics from your bedroom, sticking to a consistent sleep schedule and limiting your alcohol and coffee consumption in conjunction with therapy.

t was in the first season of Breaking Bad. The beautiful Skylar White stood in her bathrobe in the kitchen talking to her meth-cooking husband, Walt. Her face was plastered with a thick layer of green cream. I’m guessing it was avocado. Avocados are filled with vitamin A, which helps to purge off any dead skin cells. The glutamine amino acid present cleanses the skin and offers protection against harsh environmental factors.

It’s easy enough to make, take one fully ripened avocado and after removing the pit and skin, mash it up well until it’s creamy and butter-like. Apply the paste to your face and let the avocado butter exercise its magic over your skin for almost half an hour before washing it off with cool water.

NAVIGATING YOUR SKIN: A Look at Face Mapping BY: MEGAN PASCHE

If you have ever contemplated why you always break out in the same area of your face, face mapping may just help you to delve deeper. It is actually a fairly old Chinese medicine technique combined with today’s cutting edge dermatology that works together to connect spots on your face to other areas in your body. Essentially, your face is a map, and the acne is the big “X”. Different “X’s” on different areas correspond to other internal areas in the body.

If you can address the underlying issue, you might be well on your way to solving your skin issues.

ZONES 1 & 2: DIGESTIVE SYSTEM Breakout in this area can be due to eating too much rich or sugary food. Other culprits may be not enough sleep or high stress levels.

Try watching what you eat and cutting back on sugar intake.

ZONE 3: LIVER This area between your eyes can be indicative of a need to reduce alcohol, dairy or fatty food intake, as these items are hard for the liver to process. It can also be helpful to make sure to get at least 30 minutes of activity per day.

Cut back on animal fats and proteins, and try incorporating good fats such as avocado.

ZONES 7 & 8: GALL BLADDER/KIDNEYS This spot near the ears could be related to the way your body processes fats and oils.The ears are a very sensitive area and relate to the kidneys. If

they are feeling hot, it could be an indicator of high stress levels. Drink a lot of water, and cutback on caffeine and alcoholic beverages.

ZONES 9 & 10: RESPIRATORY SYSTEM The cheek area is linked to the lungs, so you may find you breakout on your cheeks if you are a smoker. Smoking also reduces the amount of collagen in the skin, which leads to wrinkles. Breakouts could also happen here due to cell phone use or sleeping on your side.

ZONES 11 & 12: HORMONES Many women break out on the chin and along the jawline, and these areas are related to stress and hormone levels.

ZONE 13: STOMACH Breaking out in this area could be the result of eating too much greasy or heavy food. You can try eating more fibre in your diet, as well as upping your intake of fruit and vegetables.

ZONE 14: STRESS Oftentimes, breakouts on the neck are caused by high levels of stress.

You can try some methods that may reduce that stress including yoga, meditation or journaling.

Interview with famed plastic surgeon Dr. Lista Let me begin this article by telling you that I do not have perfect skin. My skin has been so flawed, in fact, that it has taken me many years to unveil my face in public without having to wonder whether friends or strangers alike would stare at my blotchy red sun-burnt skin, or bury my flaky cheeks into my shawl in particularly turbulent times. My struggle with skin care, however, is not unique, nor new.

I sat down with renowned Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Frank Lista, in hopes of exploring some of the most common skin problems, and just how they can be solved. “ The one message I have is that there is no one product that you should use. You should use a whole program, because good skin care involves more than just one thing. It starts with cleansing, then exfoliating, then active agent, then calming and protecting. Skin care is a lot like hiring a personal trainer; you wouldn’t dream of going to personal training and doing only one exercise. Skin is exactly the same.”

ACNE My Experience: Throughout my teenage years, I was one of those girls. I italicize ‘those,’ because I now know what it is like to stare at women with perfect skin and ask myself ‘how?’ The truth, however, is that even ‘those’ girls do not have perfect skin.

They have simply received good advice early on, rarely changed their routine, and invested in the best products for their skin type -- concealer included. As a result, they’ve saved themselves the grief, money, and time it takes to deal with the ordeal that is acne - the struggles associated with which often feel like swimming in uncharted waters.

What is it?

“There are two types of acne: when your hormones are first kicking in, when you’re a teenager. Most people grow out of that.

There’s the second type, adult-onset acne, which is hormonally mediated acne.What happens is that hormones stimulate sebum production in the glands at the base of your hair follicles and your skin, and if the keratin blocks those hair follicles, the sebum can’t get out.That inflammation, the red spots, come from a blocked duct. “

What we don’t like is a variegated completion, we’d like it all to be uniform in color. “ Something else worth mentioning - the degree of damage might also be culturally specific: As Dr. Lista, an Italian-Canadian, notes, “”Italians share a lot of the same skin problems that most Mediterraneans do.

Because we are of Mediterranean of origin, we don’t burn as easily as people from Nordic countries. Because we don’t burn as easily, we think we can sit out in the sun for way longer than people of more northern climates, but the damage that occurs to the skin is equal...we get more sun, we get more damage.”

What to do about it?

Retin A. Other procedures known to lessen wrinkles include laser resurfacing, where a laser removes the top layer of skin to produce more collagen, and wrinkle-fillers such as botox and collagen.

DRY SKIN My Experience: Raised in Canada, the harsh winters have not been friendly to my skin. I am often left with a face so dry that it begins to flake, or, worse, crack when I smile, leaving me in a particularly painful state.

What is it?

“Dry skin is the opposite of acne-prone, greasy skin.You have dry, delicate skin. It’s very thin, they don’t have very much oil production. Oil lubricates the skin, so they don’t have very much protection. Those patients have very sensitive skin, so we need to be very gentle with the skin.”

Depending on your skin tone, a prescription bleaching cream could work wonders.

While it’s more costly, chemical peels can also improve the appearance of brown spots.

As the epidermal layer of skin is removed by the acid in the peel, new skin grows to match the surrounding color.

WRINKLES

If you think your acne might be related to your hormones, make sure to see your doctor. Recent research suggests that a low glycemic index diet, where you eat less refined sugars, carbohydrates, and sugar-containing foods, acts to balance insulin and lessen breakouts. Eliminating milk from your diet can help too. In the meantime, products containing retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and salicylic acid are your best bet for clearer skin.

My Experience: As I fall into the 18-24 year old demographic, my experience with wrinkles is, thankfully, limited. My main concern, currently? Prevention. My mother’s? Regression.

EYES: PUFFINESS AND DARK CIRCLES

SUNBURNT SKIN AND BROWN SPOTS My Experience: I am legitimately allergic to most sunscreen products that are sold on the market today. However, that fact hasn’t stopped me from spending hours and hours in the sun, silently hoping that the dermatologist-issued warnings are wrong, and praying my sun-bathed skin does not catch up to me. I used to think that a burn was a pre-curser to a wonderful, glowing tan.The freckles that have now begun to emerge, however, tell me otherwise.

What is it?

“The reason you get brown spots usually is because of exposure to sun. It causes an increase in melanin production and that

What to do about it?

Preventative measures, like wearing sunscreen, sleeping well (on your back!), and getting enough sleep are always helpful whether experiencing your first or tenth wrinkle. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate or test anti-wrinkle moisturizers, and classifies them, instead, as cosmetics, which makes over-thecounter products hard to trust. The only FDA-approved treatment for wrinkles, topically, is tretinoin, otherwise known as

Look for products that seal moisture, such as those containing petrolatum or lanolin, and remember to moisturize frequently throughout the day.

My Experience: Exam day, for me, is most often accompanied by rings around my eyes and puffiness that make others wonder if I’d been crying. Though it does go away after a restful night’s sleep, I know that eventually, that might not always be the case.

What is it?

“There are a lot of reasons why you could get puffiness. Lots of times, it’s retention of fluid; if you drink too much one night and withhold a lot of water, the fat cells underneath your eyeball will bulge out. The other main reason is the fat cells which your eye sits on are held in place in a rigid scaffold of muscles. As you get older, that gets loose and it can’t hold the fat anymore, so it bulges out.”

What to do about it?

Dr. Lista’s own line, Miracle 10 Skincare, offers a “light, hydrating antioxidant and botanically rich” eye treatment, which “refines, calms and moisturizes delicate tissue without irritating, even the most sensitive eye area,” which, among its benefits, acts to plump and firm eye tissue. He notes,“when we devised the eye cream, we were trying to restore firmness to those structures so that it doesn’t puff out.”
