COASTAL ACOUSTIC BAREFOOT MUSIC Strikes a Chord for Change by James Coulter For more than a decade, Coastal Acoustic Barefoot Music A.K.A T.Mike & Duke has performed live music across the county and state. So blessed they have been through their music that every year they donate proceeds from their tips to select charitable organizations. T. Michael Stavres sat down with Today & Tonight Magazine to discuss their intentions this year: Q: Tell me about yourself and your acoustic duo. A: We have a duo. It is myself and Duke Burr. We have been playing together since 2006. For 14 years, we played locally across Polk County and Central Florida. We decided 6

DECEMBER 2020

10 years ago that we both had regular lives and regular jobs, you go out and have an opportunity to play music where people tip you. We thought it would be a good idea to use those tips to have an impact on local individuals and charitable organizations, so we decided [to donate] it all back. Q: What inspired you to start donating your tips to charity? What have been some organizations you’ve donated to? A: Our initial effort was called “Strike a Chord for Change.” It is a play on words: you strike a chord of a guitar you are playing, and people put change in your tip jar, and hopefully that money goes to making a little change for the lives we are trying to help. We donated to a number of charitable

organizations and local non-profits, some of the more notable ones are the Cypress Gardens Water Ski Team and their Adaptive Water Ski program, Public Education Partnership of Winter Haven, and Cypress Gardens Montessori Charter School. So it is a way where we are blessed to do what we do and be able to use that for a means of good will and giving back to a community that does so much for so many people. Q: And who are you donating to this year? A: For 2020, it has been screwed up. Most of us as musicians have not been able to play out as much. So where we have been able to play, we are donating those tips back to the people at the places where we play, whether it is Grove Roots or wherever it is. We are giving

back to the service staff because they have been impacted as anybody has since March. We will continue to do that until the end of this year. Q: Any plans for next year? A: For 2021, we looked at who has been impacted by the pandemic and who needed to rearrange their lives. We are going to give our tips to Theatre Winter Haven, who has not been able to do a stage performance at their facility since March. They are now just beginning to start back up at limited capacity…Because we love doing stuff for kids, we are also donating to Girls Inc. of Winter Haven. So we will split between those two. It is not like a major contribution, but if it is enough to make it easier for the people running these services, that is our goal. Q: What has been your personal experience under lockdown?

we can. I look at what Theatre Winter Haven does for so many groups in our community. From seniors to kids, from veterans to persons with physical and mental limitations, they do so much to create a outlet and an environment that is accepting for everyone, and that is what we are all about. Their mission and perspective and values [are] very important and very much aligned with who we are. With Girls Inc, that is another great local organization. It is a very specialized program. It is doing so much for the young ladies in our community. They struggled through this pandemic just trying to get back up and running this school year. While some may look at it as a simple extracurricular activity, it is a very powerful and meaningful program they provide that we believe in. Looking at it, there are hundreds of nonprofits that need help, and we wish we could

do all of it, but we are trying to spread out where we could touch some groups we have not done much of which as of late. That is the catalyst. Q: Anything else you want to add? A: As long as we have been doing this, we are somewhere between 45 and 50 thousand dollars we have been able to generate with a giveback approach. A lot of that happened in 2018. We did the Celebrity Lip-Sync Battle, and we used our platform to build revenue for that event. But as long as we have been doing it, it has been a good way to give back…It has been a blessing for us to be able to go out and do what we love to do, and at the same time, have an opportunity to make a positive impact on the community in which we live. For more info: Find them on Facebook.

A: I think for anybody who does live performances like we do, it has been tough. For the longest time, you just couldn’t do it. From March until July, it was not a safe environment for anyone to be out. And the places where you could play, they could not operate at full capacity. So the desire to bring in entertainment is curtailed by the fact that you cannot have a full crowd. You want to have business, but you don’t want to have so much business that it creates an unsafe environment. Getting back to it, we still have it limited to what it is a year ago. But that is good. It needs to be that way. And we appreciate it. Q: What are your hopes and expectations for the organizations you are donating to? A: I think we look and try to help whoever

ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Chaos It used to be thought that the

events that changed the world were things like big bombs, maniac politicians, huge earthquakes, or vast population movements, but it has

now been realized that this is a very old-fashioned view held by people totally out of touch with modern thought. The things that really

change the world, according to chaos

just a function of keeping track of things. If you knew enough, you could predict anything. That’s

been cherished scientific belief since

Newton.’ And?’ chaos theory throws it right out the window.”

ditions.” If you are a child of the 80s and 90s, you probably first learned of Chaos Theory while watching Jurassic Park. As the movies well demonstrate, humans fail to learn from their mistakes. It does appear our nation is in chaos, and we are in the middle of some twisted version of Jumanji. It might be easier to navigate a game filled with wild beasts than the political scene this election year. As chaos theory predicts, seemingly small-unrelated shifts lead to complete disorder in a system. We are watching the outcome of our lack of tolerance and cooperation erode our American system. The proliferation of conspiracy theories and distrust shows how tiny bits of fear over time grow and expand like cracks in a dam. Eventually, those cracks lead to a complete breach, and the deluge will come crashing down. We doubted the doctors, ignored science, and now we are

in a state of chaos. The good news is the law of thermodynamics provides that systems will eventually return to order. We will find a way to return normalcy; however, rebuilding takes time and patience. Two personality characteristics that are not primarily American traits. Dynamic change and interruption built the United States. However, we weathered many storms by working together and respecting diverse opinions. The pandemic has shown just how quickly our system can break. We need resiliency and stamina for the future ahead. More robust healthcare, green technologies, and better education are the first steps in a better system. We cannot solve all problems, but we can provide healthcare for all. As we continue in the year that nobody predicted, who has dinosaur invasion for November on their disaster bingo card?

5 Inspiring Tales Of Inspiration So, 2020?! From COVID-19 to global warming, to nationwide civil unrest and the election, this year has been the real “Sugar Honey Iced Tea”! And considering how miserable everyone is, I wanted to deviate from petty politics and write something more uplifting. Over the past decade, I’ve traveled across Polk County and met amazing people with equally amazing stories. From rappers who went from rags to riches, to high schoolers who help children in hospitals, these people have lived inspirational lives that continue to inspire me. And I wanted to share with you all their inspirational stories:

Eugene Fultz. Mark 10:44 decrees that whoever wishes to be great must become “servant of all.” This smalltown mayor has certainly lived by that commandment. He served God for nearly two decades through his ministries in Orlando and Lake Wales. He served his country through 24 years in the military. He served local students with learning disabilities at Roosevelt Academy. And he has served his community through three terms as Mayor of Lake Wales, during which time, the city grew exponentially in economic development. Who else could have been more worthy of being named the 2017 Lake Wales Citizen of the Year?

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

Melanie Brown Culpepper. Some people know her as the owner of Melanie’s Cutting Edge. Others know her better as the Southern Belle with the big heart. Melanie has assisted countless fundraisers and other events across the county, including Rockin on The River, Smoke on the Water, and Eggfest. Last year, she started her own non-profit organization, Melanie’s Wings Of An Angel Foundation, to help local families in need. This holiday season, she’s once again helping Freedom Church collect toys for local children through Toys 4 Our Town, a fundraiser that served more than 400 families in past years. Zachary Kirkland. What started as a class project grew into an award-winning non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation. 12th grader Zac was tasked with creating a project to help his community. Upon learning how relatives in the hospital needed socks, he decided to collect toiletries and other items to distribute to children in the hospital. Nearly three years later, Silly Socks Saturdays continues to collect donations to give to patients at Lakeland Regional Hospital. His organization was even awarded a Disney Be Inspired grant. Though not currently making hospital visits, Silly Socks still collects donations. Learn more at: sillysocksaturdays.com

Mike “Mikey B” Beasley. This Babson Park musician started out mixing McFlurries at the Mickey D’s in Frostproof. Nearly five years later, he’s now a world-acclaimed music producer mixing sick beats for rap videos and even movies. He started making enough money selling his musical scores that he quit his day job and moved from his one-room apartment into his current home in Babson Park. Now he’s working with artists locally and internationally. His latest project was creating the score for the documentary “Freeway Boys: The Untold Story” L.A. drug kingpin Freeway Ricky Ros. Check out his other work at: http://mikeyBBeats. com Eddie Bower. Growing up, Eddie Bower dreamed of being a rapper, but others “highly underestimated” him. Nevertheless, he kept dreaming big. He purchased equipment for his own recording studio after high school and started creating music albums. He gave one of these albums to an aspiring videographer, Mike Sarr. The two of them joined forces to make their own music videos. Bower has since released dozens of music videos like “Frito Lay” and has filmed not one, but two, movies in his own comedy film series, “Tyrone Da Drug Dealer.” You can watch these videos and movies at: https://www.youtube.com/ user/EddieBower1/

PEACE ON EARTH: THE EXHIBIT

PINEWOOD ESTATE CRITTER CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE

Edward Bok was a man of action: he built a garden sanctuary; he offered The American Peace Award; and he inspired many through his writings and acts of kindness. Learn more about his legacy of peace with this outdoor exhibit located around the Oval Lawn.

Tucker and Tilly, the Pinewood Estate squirrels, have invited their forest friends to bring the spirit of the holidays outdoors. Fun for the entire family, Tucker & Tilly will be hiding in the estate’s gardens. Pick up your Critter Christmas Guide and find each of these forest friends.
