And imagine if you could do all of this and more in the middle of cultivated natural wilderness while also being minutes from Downtown Lakeland and its many shops and cafes. You can do all of this and more at the all-new Bonnet Springs Park in Downtown Lakeland. Located near the intersection of George Jenkins Boulevard and Kathleen Road, Bonnet Springs Park is Lakeland’s newest nature park and cultural center. At 168 acres, it is larger than Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World (which is 107 acres). While it may not have the same thrill rides, Bonnet Springs Park has one perk over Disney: it is free and open to the public. “Disney and the Orlando area [are] outpricing families...We are hoping to be a place where families can come and enjoy a free day at the park. The park is huge and there is something for [every] member of the family,” explained Kaitlyn Marcum, Brand Manager

for Tinsley Creative, the marketing firm for Bonnet Springs Park. With over 20 nature trails, several gardens and playgrounds, an amphitheater, an eatery and rooftop bar, a butterfly garden, boathouse, and treehouse, there is always something new to discover and do at Bonnet Springs Park. The park is also ADA-accessible and pet-friendly. Several nature trails allow visitors to enjoy the beauty of Florida’s natural world, and with an elevated walking path high in the trees and a boardwalk stretching over the spring waters, they have an opportunity to get as close to Florida flora and fauna as they can. Afterward, they can learn even more about nature in the comfort of indoor air-conditioning at the GiveWell Community Nature Center. Bonnet Springs Park also offers many opportunities to appreciate culture as well as nature. The Allen & Company Family Lawn provides a sprawling two-acre amphitheater where people can gather for live musical performances and outdoor festivals. The Watson Clinic Gallery displays many photos and art pieces detailing the history of the local area. The Citizens Bank & Trust Ballroom offers a 7,000-squarefoot facility to accommodate events with nearly 400 guests. With several amenities and facilities both outdoors and in, and with activities ranging from hiking and cycling to kayaking and pedal boating, and even hosting live music and other performances, Bonnet Springs Park is sure to offer something new and unique to visitors all day every day. “It is a free park for everyone who wants to come and visit,” Marcum said. “It is truly something special and you are guaranteed to see something different every time.” Bonnet Springs Park currently sits on land that was once the Lakeland Railyard, which, according to the web-
site of Sasaki, the designing firm behind the park, “served as a major hub for the movement of freight up and down the east coast.” Since 1952, the area had remained abandoned. Over the years, it has attracted heaps of garbage and homeless encampments, Marcum said. Through the collaboration of local developer David Bunch, retired Lakeland Parks and Recreation Director Bill Tinsley, and Carol and Barney Barnett, the purchase of the railyard and more than a dozen adjoining properties were acquired, and master planning and design began in 2016. Bonnet Springs Park serves as the lasting legacy of local philanthropist Carol Jenkins Barnett, who passed away in December 2021. In 2017, Sasaki was hired to design the park, and construction began shortly after. Bonnet Springs took seven years to construct and cost nearly $100 million to complete. The park celebrated its grand opening with a two-day celebration on the weekend of Oct. 22 and 23. The Florida Children’s Museum will be opening this month on Nov. 4. Of the park’s many facilities and amenities, Marcum especially loves the Crenshaw Canopy Walk that takes visitors 25 feet into the treetops. She also loves Mabel the Mosaic Owl, a wooden play structure where children can climb its wings and slide down its back. She has high expectations that the park will entertain local families for generations to come. “There is nothing else like it here,” she said. “You do not feel like you are moments away from Downtown Lakeland...It truly is a gem of Lakeland, and we cannot wait to see how it grows.” Bonnet Springs Park is located at 400 Bonnet Springs Boulevard, Lakeland, FL 33815. With 21 nature trails and countless playgrounds, gardens, and other amenities, Bonnet Springs Park has a little bit of something for anyone and everyone. Every visit has something new to discover. Here are just a few: Welcome Center. Your first stop on your adventure should be the welcome center. Aside from browsing the gift shop and getting a quick bite from the cafe, you can learn more about the local history and legacy of the Lakeland community at the Watson Clinic Gallery. Ruthvens Family Playground. Children will be able to frolic and play at the park’s many playgrounds. This one has countless hillside slides to slip down, as well as a water misters to run through. Mabel the Mosaic Owl. A wooden owl shaped playground for children to play on with rock climbing on the wings and slides for the tail. Crenshaw Canopy Walk. This ADA-accessible and stroller-friendly boardwalk takes visitors nearly 25 feet high into the treetops where they can have a bird’s eye view of the park and its natural landscape. Wetlands Boardwalk. Another boardwalk that stretches over the blue waters of the lagoon. Take a stroll along it, and maybe you can see a great blue heron perching nearby or even a turtle or fish swimming in the water. The Boathouse. Want to explore the lake even more? Drop by the boathouse and rent a kayak, or pedal boat so you can explore right on the water of Blanton Family Lagoon. The Depot Cafe. What’s a more scenic way to enjoy a bird’s eye view of the park than this rooftop bar and cafe? It’s also a great place to get a bite and enjoy special events. GiveWell Community Foundation Nature Center. After exploring nature, go inside and learn more about it in this indoor, air-conditioned facility. Countless exhibits, many interactive, allow children and childrenat-heart to learn more about the natural world. The Kiwanis Cares for Kids Treehouse. This 500-square feet treehouse, which is both wheelchair and stroller accessible, allows children of all ages to play inside among the treetops. This venue is open to the public and available to rent for parties and other events. Florida Children’s Museum. The new home of the Explorations V Children’s Museum opening this November. This 47,800 square-foot indoor facility offers countless interactive exhibits that allow children to explore and learn with all their five senses. Zoey’s Butterfly House. Step inside this greenhouse and enjoy colorful butterflies as well as colorful flowers. Counting My Blessings With this month being Thanksgiving, I figured the best way to commemorate the occasion was to use this month’s column to list all the blessings I am thankful for. So join me as I count my blessings: #1: Good Health. Even during the pandemic, I have been fortunate to experience good health. The worst illness I have experienced these past few years has been the occasional cold. Except for one particularly bad cold earlier this year, I am thankful to have survived this pandemic with hardly a scratch. It certainly helps that I have received all the necessary vaccinations and boosters—all made free and available thanks to the hard work of our government and Dr. Fauci. #2: Good Jobs. While I don’t earn enough to live on my own, I am thankful for having two good jobs that allow me to make enough money to get by. I am fortunate enough to graduate college 12 years ago without debt. Moreover, my two jobs have proven quite flexible. I am thankful for two editors who have granted me the privilege of using their publications as a platform to discuss whatever I want. So, thank you, Chris and Carl, for being terrific bosses! And I so very much look forward to our lunches together. #3: My Family. I will not say my family is perfect. Then again, no family is. However, I am thankful for having relatives who are willing to support me through my endeavors. It is because of them I was able to afford a new car and new phone when both went to meet the great junkyard in the sky this year. It was also because of them that I was able to publish my debut novel under my pen name. It also helps that many of them bought a copy of my novel. So, to all my family, thank you for the birthday
presents, trips to Disney World, and everything else you have given me this past year. #4: The Polk County Library Cooperative. Growing up in rural Virginia, our county had only one library, and we were lucky if they had a copy of the Cat in the Hat. Having moved here to Polk County 17 years ago, I have been blessed with a county-wide library cooperative that I only dreamed of enjoying as a kid. Thanks to the Polk County Library Cooperatives, I have access to countless books, movies, and music—all of which can be conveniently delivered straight to my mailbox! And with the Hoopla app, I can read countless e-books on my Kindle without worrying about late fees. The best part is that all of it is paid for through my taxpayer dollars. Speaking of which— #5: No Taxes! Yes, believe it or not, I have been fortunate enough these past two years not to have been required to pay taxes. Most of that is due to what little money I have made during this time, mostly due to the pandemic, as well as the hard work and dedication of my family’s accountant. Thanks to them, I have been able to skimp and save what little money I make towards my larger expenses. #6: Stimulus Checks. Finally, I am thankful to our government for providing me and my fellow citizens with stimulus checks to get us through these uncertain times. I’ve certainly put mine to good use by financing the publication of my debut novel. So, thank you Trump and Biden for letting me achieve my dream of publishing my novel. Festival of TREES
Will Showcase Dozens of Christmas Trees Decorated by Local Organizations by James Coulter
Imagine a forest of decorated Christmas trees with a village of gingerbread nestled nearby. Imagine an enchanted day where children can decorate their own cookies, sit with Santa, create a craft, and even buy presents for their parents. You can enjoy such a festive occasion during the epic return of the Festival of Trees, to be hosted at Grove Roots Brewery on Sat. Nov. 19 and Sun. Nov. 20 from Noon - 6 p.m. The Festival of Trees, true to its name, will showcase several dozen Christmas trees decorated by local organizations such as All Saints Academy, Grace Lutheran School, and local designers. Each tree will be decorated to various themes, including peacocks, gingerbread, monochrome, the Nutcracker, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and more.
Secret Shop. Home Depot will provide crafts for kids. The Junior League will host the Friday Night Sponsor Party, and the Women’s Resource Center will host a Teddy Bear Tea.

The Festival of Trees had long been a time-honored holiday tradition in Winter Haven. The original event had been hosted by the Junior League and Rotary Club in the 1980s, yet it had not been around for the past ten years or so.
Joe Dunham, owner of Grove Roots, fondly remembers such events. He wanted to host something similar as a way for his children to experience the same holiday fun he enjoyed as a child. So, he started discussing the matter with Hemenway, and they decided to have the Ridge Art Association host the event at Grove Roots.
Christy Hemenway, Executive Director of the Ridge Art Association, remembered when the annual holiday event brought joy to people, and she wanted to bring that feeling back, especially now. “Winter Haven is in such a good place, and I think our community is

be benefiting from their piece of the event, Hemenway said. “Back in the day, they [hosted it on] Thanksgiving weekend” Hemenway said. “That is so much time to take away from families, to decorate the trees and work the event, a lot of volunteers to run the event. We decided to do it the weekend before.” Their biggest challenge thus far has been with the Christmas trees. Most trees do not go on sale until after Thanksgiving, so finding trees for the event has proven quite the task. Hemenway has big hopes for the big return of this beloved holiday tradition which will also raise money for many different non-profit organizations. With so many people and organizations assisting with the event, she has nothing but great expectations on the success of this time-honored (again) holiday event. “The thing I am looking forward to the most is the smiles on children’s faces [and] to have the community host a successful event,” she said. Ginger is a tan and white female Terrier mix. She is approximately 9 years, 10 months old. She weighs about 16.5 lbs. She has been spayed. Ginger's owner had to move to a mobile home park and there just wasn't enough room for her to run and play like she was used to. She is very loving, likes to go for walks and loves to play. Ginger is a sweet lap dog too.

Star Crunch is a female Domestic Shorthair mix. She was born on Saturday, March 12, 2022 and is 4 months old. She weighs about 1.8 lbs. She is good with cats and dogs. Star Crunch has done well around people and children of all ages. Star Crunch handles grooming well and is litter box trained. I have to be honest this cat is an adorable kitten who is full of love.

Veterinarian of the Month Dr. Vargas received her DVM from Tuskegee University in 1994. In 1996, she established her AAHA accredited Orchid Springs Animal Hospital in Winter Haven, FL. In 2009, she began her studies at Chi Institute, eventually garnering certifications in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, Food therapy and Tui Na. She is also a fellow of the American Academy of Veterinary Acupunture. Dr. Vargas is pursuing her Master’s Degree in TCVM at Chi Institute, where she works as a Teacher Assistant and as a Lecturer for the Chi Latin America. She has also worked as a consultant for Disney Animal Kingdom. Dr. Vargas is also a Certified Veterinary Journalist and a prolific author of both scientific and motivational articles. Dr. Vargas has lectured at the World TCVM Congress (2015, 2016, 2017), AAVA Conference (2017), AVMA (2011), and the CbVMA (2017). She is a guest blogger for www. allthingshealing.com and a writer for Woman to Woman magazine and the Lakeland Ledger newspaper. Last year she contributed a chapter for Jack Canfield’s Amazon Best seller book “The Soul of Success”. She served as an AVMA Spokesperson for Hispanic market and has recorded many PSA’s and radio interviews promoting responsible
pet ownership. Her love for Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine manifested in her book: Alt-Vet: The Revolutionary Pet Care and Longevity Solution. Her passion for helping animals and her voluntarism has awarded her state and national recognition including the Purina National Pet Care Award, Bay News 9 Medical Hero Award, and The FVMA Gold Award. She was honored by the American Veterinary Foundation as “America’s Favorite Veterinarian” in 2015. She lives in sunny Winter Haven, Florida, with her husband, two daughters and a menagerie of pets.
