NOVEMBER 2021 7

by James Coulter It was a dark evening. Two lovers kiss inside a car parked along Lovers Lane. The car radio blares an important bulletin. A hooked-handed inmate escaped from the mental institution. Suddenly, a scratch is heard outside the car. Scared, the boyfriend slams the accelerator. He makes it to his girlfriend’s house, but when he steps out of the car, he discovers a hook hand on the car door. This popular urban legend was retold as part of a screenplay read aloud during a table read at Just Write! Lakeland. This local group for screenwriters, playwrights, and actors meets weekly to read submissions. During this lively session, they were able to perform every detail, from the haunting screech of the hook against the car door to the inmate maniacally laughing. Just Write! Lakeland is a writers’ workshop that allows playwrights and screenwriters to have their screenplays read aloud and critiqued. According to their website, their mission is: “to find new, local voices in film and theater, embrace and strengthen the unique perspectives in the work, and highlight the talent in the Central Florida community by producing unique, local works.” Every Monday, the group reads submissions through a table read. After the reading, the other members offer their feedback. The meetings also offers actors an opportunity to better hone their acting skills and abilities, and to seek out material to produce into live stage performances. Just Write! Lakeland was started in October 2017. Since then, they produced eight live shows. Recently, last month, they hosted the full production “Steampunk Shenanigans”, a series of comedy skits with a sci-fi twist. Other live productions include “Clown Car” by Mark 8 NOVEMBER 2021

Kenneally and “Land of the Greedy Mouse”, which was also performed in Mulberry. That last play was written by Vincent Scarsella, a retired attorney from New York State who moved to Davenport in 2011. When he discovered a Ledger article about Just Write!, he decided to join the group. His first submission was a play called “Practical Time Travel.” “[Jon’s] group gave some great insight involving changes that they felt would enhance the play, and I took those to heart and made changes, resubmitted to them twice, and Jon really liked it and decided to stage it in the Stage Room in 2019,” Vincent said. Even being an hour and a half away in Venice, he still attends regularly via Zoom: “For guys like me, it is very nice, I am able to join in on Monday evenings, not only for my

plays, but to see other plays written by other members.” Even though the current COVID-19 crisis has stymied their attendance, they still meet regularly every week, with most members attending virtually. A recent meeting drew in at least 13 members, two meeting in person, and the others appearing via videoconferencing. “We are still plugging along,” said Jon Fedkiw, the group’s leader. “The Coronavirus did a number on us but we are still here. We are still going forward with it.” Tom Mook is a local voice actor and radio announcer who proudly lends his voice to the table readings. “If I am not doing a show on stage, it gives me a chance to keep my juices going,” he said. Having their work read and acted allows

writers to hear for themselves how their words sound when spoken aloud. Many writers have had their screenplays produced across the country, and many have written multiples works, rather than merely being “one hit wonders,” Mook said. “We have some that submit that have done production and we are able to give them a different view of it, a new rendition of it, with different actors giving different interpretations,” Mook said. “Playwrights keep submitting. They find out we can read their works, they can listen to it, they can get comments before it ever goes into production.” Rory Penland, a member from Altamont Springs, has been a member for a year and a half. He was invited by another prominent member, Jim Moss, a fellow writer he had known for more than 30 years. Penland had written multiple screenplays, one of which had been produced in 2002. Since then, he was written several scripts for animated movies and TV pilots. Penland appreciates the overall camraderie of the group. Being able to hear his screenplays read allows him to see and hear for himself what works and doesn’t work so that he can make the proper revisions. He has written three plays since starting the group, something that he had never done before, and the feedback he has received for each of them has proven valuable. “We always have a good time when we read, we always get constructive criticism, and you get support and encouragement which is helpful,” he said. “It is nice to hear your writing come to life, to hear your characters read by proffesional actors, and it is a nice feeling, and that is why I have stuck with it for a long time.” Just Write! Lakeland offers a little bit of something for everyone interested in theater or EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

film. For writers, it allows them to have their work performed and critiqued, allowing them to better perfect their screenwriting. For actors, it offers them the opportunity to exercise their acting skills and performances. “For writers, screenwriters, and playwrights, they get their work read out loud,” Fedkiw said. “We try to get them with actors. So writers can get it out of their heads, into the public forum, and they hear what works and hear what doesn’t work, and they can do that second draft.” Just Write! Lakeland meets every Monday at 7 p.m. at their writer’s workshop, located in the downstairs stage room at 310 E. Lemon Street, Lakeland, FL. OUT LOUNGE

New Comedy Club Opens In Winter Haven by James Coulter

Mike Lee, co-host of the Big Max Morning Show on Max 98.3, always wanted to own a comedy club. His dream has since come true now that he has become the co-owner of the Laugh Out Lounge. Winter Haven’s premier comedy club, located near the corner of Central Avenue and Third Street, right across the street from Central Tavern, is set to open on Nov. 10. Their opening weekend will host the comedy stylings of Ron Feingold, a comedian famous for his “comedy acapella show.” Mike plans to draw in big name comedians to serve as club headliners for his new venue, providing entertainment most Polk County locals have to travel out of town to enjoy. Other comedians scheduled to perform include Kevin Farley in January and Michael Winslow in February. “We want to bring as much comedy and laughter to the area,” he said. “Most people, if they want to enjoy a big headliner, they have to drive to Orlando and Tampa to see that. We are hoping to bring that here to Winter Haven where it is a short drive from your house.” 12 NOVEMBER 2021

Co-Owners Ashta Compton, Chris Barton and Mike Lee Mike has been a professional entertainer since the ripe age of 19. For ten years, he traveled the country performing improv and sketch comedy. He moved to Winter Haven in 2004 and started his career at Max 98.3 in Lakeland, where he currently co-host’s the station’s morning show. During that time, he has also hosted and booked many comedy gigs for various venues. One of those venues was Barrel 239, which approached him with an offer that he could not refuse.

“Those shows were so successful there that they approached me and asked me if I wanted to open a club,” he said. “I was like, yeah, that is all I ever wanted to do….it has been a dream of mine forever.” Ashta Compton, co-owner of Barrel 239, with her partner, Chris Barton, has been hosting monthly comedy gigs at their bar. Customers loved these performances so much that they often requested weekly shows. However, the size of their bar, which often had to be rearranged for these shows, would not permit weekly performances, she said. “We realized that Winter Haven needed a comedy club, and who else to be partnered with this than Mike Lee?” Ashta said. “We want to do the best we can to give them a genuine comedy club experience, not just a bar that does comedy.” Helping decorate their new establishment is local artist, Eric Sweetman. His caricatured illustrations of famous comedians like George Carlin, Robin Williams, and Norm MacDonald currently hang from the club walls. Many of these art pieces and their prints are even available for sale. Eric has discussed his illustration work with

Mike, and he was even selected for a caricature project for the radio station that never quite took off. However, when Mike decided to open his new club, he could think of no better person to create art than Eric. “He wanted this club idea, and he had reached out to me after looking at me on Instagram where he saw I was doing a lot of caricature work,” Eric said. “He thought this was a great thing to decorate original art of comedians and have a special look for this club.” Mike and his crew decided to open their venue along Third Street in Downtown Winter Haven, near the intersection of Central Avenue. The downtown area has been growing exponentially over the past five years due to the economic development of the Six/Ten LLC, and they wanted to be a part of that economic growth, Ashta said. Laugh Out Lounge is conveniently located in the downtown epicenter, right across the street from Central Tavern, and only a short walk away from the parking garage. Being within walking distance of eight eateries and five bars, as well as other shops, boutiques, and venues, they hope to not only draw in foot traffic from other downtown businesses, but help create traffic for them, Asha said. “We are on the busiest corner for foot traffic,” Chris said. “Anything they want to do before or after the show, they have the opportunity to do, and so it makes it a lot more appealing for a person to walk into a show than to plan the night. The amount of foot traffic versus anywhere else in Winter Haven is better on this corner than anywhere else we can find.” Mike is currently working with an agent in NYC to book big-name gigs to his new club. As someone with more than a decades’ worth of experience performing and booking comedy gigs, being able to open up a club seemed like the next natural step, and he’s hoping that it’s a successful one. “"I wanted to have my own place where people can come to enjoy shows, instead of me going to other places to produce shows,” he said. “Chris and Ash are the ones who made it happen. Ash had the idea. Chris made it happen. He found the place. Ash had big experience behind the bar running a club. She knows how to run a club. I know how to book comedians. So, it was the perfect storm of the right place at the right time. I think and hope we are going to be successful.” Laugh Out Lounge is located at 19 3rd St. NW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. The club is set to open on Nov. 10. For more information, visit their website at: http://winterhavenlol.com. EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

Jenny vs. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch Have you ever wondered what happens to the plastic waste you throw away? When disposed of properly, most of it ends up in landfills. But often, they can wind up in our waterways before eventually traveling to our oceans. There, they amass into large garbage patches, the largest of which is currently floating in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Located between Hawaii and California, The Great Pacific Garbage Patch covers an estimated 1.6 million square kilometers—roughly twice the size of Texas! It weighs 87,000 tons and contains more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic, which is 16 times larger than previously estimated, according to PBS. The garbage patch is so big that many scientists doubt whether or not it can even be removed. Cleaning up even only one percent of the area would take 67 ships one year, according to estimates by The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration’s Marine Debris Program. Charles Moore, the man who first discovered the patch in 1997, asserted that any country that attempted to clean up the patch would bankrupt itself, and that cleaning it up could take an estimated 79,000 years. But there might be hope yet in defeating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and its name is Jenny. That’s the name of the newest U-shaped net system created by The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization that seeks to remove 90 percent of ocean plastic debris by 2040. Smithsonian Magazine describes Jenny as thus: “Guided by two boats, the half-mile-long installation works by catching large and small debris from the seawater in a funnel-shaped net. Once Jenny is full of trash, workers empty the plastic onto the boat before taking it ashore to recycle.” Earlier this August, Jenny was sent on a test run where it successfully removed nearly 20,000 pounds—or about 10 tons—of plastic waste from

the garbage patch. Its creator, Boyan Slat, estimates that ten Jennys could clean up half of The Great Pacific Garbage Patch in five years, which means that the entire patch could potentially be removed within ten years, as reported by Smithsonian Magazine. Still, many scientists remain skeptical. Even if Slat and his organization succeeded in clearing away the larger debris, many microscopic plastic particles could remain lingering in the ocean. These “microplastics” prove especially dangerous, as they can be ingested by fish and other sea animals—and inevitably by the people who eat them. Even then, if Jenny proves anything, it’s that even the smallest effort can make a big impact. In the grand scope, removing only ten tons of plastic waste from an 87,000-ton garbage patch might be a small feat, but it proves that a seemingly insurmountable task can be overcome given enough brainpower and elbow grease. I remember many years ago in grade school learning about the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. Back then, many scientists speculated that the hole could take a lifetime to fix, if it could even be fixed at all; and yet, as of last year, the hole has shrunken to its smallest size yet. It took many years and a CFC ban, but the ozone has nearly healed itself. Today, we face many large ecological catastrophes, from coronavirus to global warming, that seem too big, if not impossible, to fix; and yet if we can patch the ozone layer and start cleaning the Pacific Ocean, then nothing is too big to overcome. As the old proverb goes, the journey of a thousand miles begins with one small step. Veterinarian of the Month Devon Watts was born and raised in Winter Haven, Florida and lived there his whole life until he left to pursue a bachelors in Marine Biology at University of West Florida. His interest in animals has been present since a very young age and he frequently visited zoos and animal exhibits at any wildlife themed park in the area. He attended University of West Florida for his bachelors of science in marine biology with a focus on preparing for the possibility of vet school. While there he spent time working at the Pensacola Humane Society both as a volunteer and a kennel technician and one particular animal became ill and observing his treatment cemented his desire to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. He graduated from St. George's University in January of 2019 and has been practicing at Heart of Florida Animal Hospital since February. In his free time he likes to build and paint models for tabletop games, play games with friends and watch movies usually with his pothound Soursop close by.
