TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Halloween...A Bust Mark another disappointing date on the 2020 COVID calendar. Halloween! Typically, for the past 16-17 years, we spend Halloween with our friends. It’s a tradition: hand out candy, enjoy beer-boiled hot dogs and chili with all the fixins’, and a table full of sweets. Usually a few friends and family stop by with their kids (for even more sugar) to continue the evening for a good time. Homemade sugar cookies for the kids and cocktails for the adults. Yummy! This year, our friends decided to go extra low key; no outside décor and no party. Just handing out candy to any kids that stopped by and dared to knock on the door. We were a little bummed but not surprised. What to do? Believe it or not, we have never been at our own home,

as adults, to hand out candy. Now in a new community, as of the past 4 1/2 months , we decided - the day of Halloween - to go all out! At the beginning of the month, we decorated with a few fall trinkets around the front but nothing in the true Halloween spirit. Off to the store to buy 6 bags of (good) candy and then to our storage unit to grab all the “bells and whistles”: fog machine,

strobe lights, etc... A table was set up away from the front door with a big bowl of candy, a bottle of hand sanitizer and an extra-long pair of tongs to hand out pieces of candy to the kids. We are covered! Safe, fun and ready to go! Then we invited my dad over to grill out and hand out candy or just watch football games and keep the dogs calm. The latter is what actually happened. As we waited for the darkness to come, we were actually getting excited. In our new community, being a part of the holiday, waiting for all the kids....waiting for the kids...waiting for Some One, Any One, to hand out candy to! Hmmm, this sucks!! In 2 ½ hours, we handed out candy to TWO little girls; a little deer and a little unicorn. And it wasn’t really dark yet, so the full effect of our decor was not appreciated. #CovidKilledHalloween #DidTheMillennialsKillHalloween #GottaLotOfCandyToDonate Now going into turkey time along with the full holidays kicking into high gear, it makes me wonder how all the jolly good times are going to work? MOST of the city organized Christmas community events have

been canceled by each government office throughout the county. The health community wants us to gear up for a second wave of the pandemic, which will (supposedly) hit by mid-November just going off of the charts in Europe. Guess we need to start stocking up on hand sanitizer, TP and paper towels again?!? Will there by a turkey shortage at the grocery stores? How about flour? Ugh! Our holiday menus may be compromised. A COVID killed Christmas will be the next victim on this 2020 calendar just a few weeks behind Thanksgiving. Will this madness ever end? New Christmas Wish List: Gallon of Hand Sanitizer, Case of Toilet Paper, Case of Paper Towels, MultiColor Pack of Face Masks, Case of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Case of Diet Coke, Case of Lysol Swipes and Spray.

BALMORAL EVENT CENTER A New Scenic Venue to Host Your Next Big Event by James Coulter

Looking for a scenic venue to host your next big event? Want to get married somewhere within walking distance from your honeymoon vacation suite? Or host your birthday party someplace where you can jump into a nearby pool or take a slip down a water slide? Then consider booking your next event at the brand new Event Center at Balmoral Resort Florida in Haines City. This spacious 10,000 square foot venue can accommodate 150 people, with an additional room accommodating 25 more people for a grand total of 175 guests. The facility is ideal for weddings, birthday parties, family gatherings, and business meetings. Best of all, being located on the Balmoral Resort property, the event center is in mere 6

walking distance from its vacation rental homes and other amenities such as the poolside bar and grill and the sports fields. Such a convenient location allows guests to enjoy everything else the resort has to offer. The center itself will provide a “one-stop shop” for event planning. Not only will guests be able to schedule their event, but have its other aspect planned and coordinated through their event planner. Just schedule your event, rent the facility, and their planner will take care of the rest. “My business philosophy over the years has been to offer what I call a one-stop shop to our customers,” explained Garrett Kenny, Owner of Feltrim Development. “We will supply everything that is needed. So instead of someone

planning a wedding that maybe has to talk to five or six different people, we are taking the [initiative]. We are there to help you, we will provide the service that you need, and help take off the stress to plan the event.” Balmoral Resort Florida is a creation of Feltrim Group, which has been operating in Polk County for 21 years. The resort, which first opened in 2017, consists of 180 vacation rental homes and a poolside bar and grill with a mini-water park. Last December, Feltrim opened their sports village, a sports complex which includes a 2.500-seat stadium with a field that can serve as a full-sized football field or as seven individual soccer fields. The sporting project was designed to bring people into Haines City and

Polk County and have them stay at their vacation homes. Combined with their homes, poolside bar and grill, and sports complex, the event center offers a “one-stop shop” for your recreational needs. You can host your big event, watch the big game, enjoy a poolside dinner, and relax in the comfort of your rental home all in one convenient location. Evidently, the current COVID-19 crisis has affected their original plans and expectations for the resort’s new additions. Necessary changes had to be made to accommodate guests during these uncertain times. For example, while their new event center can host up to 150 people, events will be restricted to smaller capacity sizes of 100. Previously, the resort initially expected to draw in international tourists and sports groups to events hosted at their new sports complex, and they expected to accommodate events for international guests at their event center. However, international travel restrictions have required them to extend their plans until after 2021, Kenny said. “We are in very, very unusual times,” he said. “When we planned this a year ago, COVID was not on the map. So we have to deal with that now. We have to protect our clients. We are looking 2021 still being a COVID year, so we have to operate at limited capacity.” In spite of the current pandemic, hopes remain high in the long term. Kenny expects the next five years to draw in interest for their new additions, both their sports complex and their event center. Once international travel restrictions are lifted, they

expect sports teams to play from abroad, and for guests, especially from the UK and Ireland, to host their weddings at their event center. “We are in Haines City, a very growing city, and there is no other event center like it,” Kenny said. “They have facilities in Lakeland and Winter Haven, but they are currently servicing immediate people in those areas. With the growing demands of Haines City and Davenport, we will have a lot to offer our immediate guests.” To help spread the word for their new center, a party planner and wedding expo will be hosted on Nov. 7. Potential clients are invited to view the new venue and to learn about the services provided by photographers, florists, and the subcontractors and suppliers to the business wedding facility.

Kenny feels more than confident that the services and venue provided by their new event center will speak for itself. Their success thus far has been attributed to word-of-mouth from satisfied customers, and they expect to bring in many customers who will be satisfied to the point of sharing their satisfaction with others. “I am confident in our ability to deliver a good service,” he said. “We have to look after our clients and make sure our business keeps growing. I am looking long term [of] five years. [With everything] located in one site, that will help us deliver.” Balmoral Resort Florida is located at 24 Kenny Blvd, Haines City, FL 33844. By Erica Smith

The Trouble with Chickens One on a side. It comes to little more: There where it is we do not need the wall: He is all pine and I am apple orchard. My apple trees will never get across And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him. He only says, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’ — Robert Frost, The Mending Wall The poem The Mending Wall by Robert Frost begins with this line, something there is that

doesn’t love a wall. I thought this poem was about an actual wall all through high school and not about the complex relationships between humans. Throughout the lines, Frost explores how we put up physical and mental walls to keep out those who do not agree or accept our opinions. Frost uses the wall to symbolize the barrier between communication and friendship. With a few short homespun lines, Frost delivers one of his most memorable reflections of human behavior. In a sense, 2020 has seen more wall construction than ever. So, how does this tremendous

American poem related to backyard chicken farming? Freerange chickens are creatures of habit and rise at almost the same time each morning. One minute past their internal clock, and they will let you know their thoughts on the lack of freedom and breakfast. My girls often let me know how disappointed they are in my morning routine by cackling and calling. When this happens, I dash out the door to remedy the situation and offer my eternal thanks to a husband who installed our tall wooden fence. I also breathe a small prayer to the barnyard gods that my girls do not upset our neighbors. Many municipalities do not allow chickens for several reasons, with the most notable being crowing roosters. The trouble with picking out those fluffy chicks from the feed store is there is no way to sex most breeds. Roosters are inevitable for most backyard owners.

As a backyard chicken owner,

we have been diligent in our quest to add hens to our flock, and aside from a bit of ruckus on mornings where I am not fast enough

to open the door, our animal

husbandry respects our neighbor’s home and property.

There is currently a Change.

org petition to bring backyard chickens to the city of

Auburndale, thanks to the pleas of Citizen John Bennett. If we have learned anything from

this pandemic crisis, we need to embrace backyard agriculture, ingenuity, thrift, and, most

importantly, our neighbors. We can embrace our roots, support biodiversity, and make our

neighborhoods a bit more quirky

and loveable. Will you join me in bringing chickens to Auburndale and beyond? Perhaps, chickens make good neighbors.

Save The Males What if I told you there was a group of people in America who were suffering? These people are facing a nationwide crisis to their health and safety. They have been living shorter, less healthier lives. Their job and educational opportunities have dwindled, and they have become more prone to depression, addiction, and suicide. How would you feel knowing these people were hurting? You would most likely feel sorry for them. Maybe you would be willing to aid them however you could. You would want to know who they are and what you could do to help. So who are these people? Who is

suffering from shorter lives, drug and alcohol addiction, and high suicide rates? They’re probably not who you think they are. Who are these people? They are straight white men. November 19 is International Men’s Day. It is a day to reflect on the lives of men and the issues they face. According to their website, the day is observed “to raise awareness about men’s health, improving gender relations and promoting gender equality.” When we consider gender equality, we focus on the inequalities facing women. While women have gained many of the same rights as men like the right to vote, they still earn lower wages

and are less represented in positions of power. However, men also experience inequality, and while this inequality is not as systemic as the unequal treatment towards women, it is just as real. Consider the following: • Men have shorter lifespans than women. They are also most likely to die from murder, workplace accidents, and suicide. (CDC) • More men are dying from “deaths of despair” caused by addiction and abuse. Men are suffering overdoses at a rate 400% greater than 20 years ago. (Narcon-WarnerSprings) • More women graduate college with a bachelor’s degree than men. Women consist of 41.7% of bachelor degree holders, compared to 36.2% of men. (US Census) • More men are sexually assaulted in America than women when prison rape is factored. Nearly 216,000 prisoners are raped per year, compared to about 90,000 reported rapes outside prison. (DOJ) • Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, yet breast cancer receives twice as much funding research than prostate cancer. While several offices exist to address women’s health, none exist to address men’s health.

None of this is to imply that straight white men are “oppressed.” They are not marginalized like people who are not straight, white, and male. Nor is it to imply that men are hurt by “feminism.” Men are not hurt because of gains made by women. They are hurt because of toxic masculinity, because of the unfair expectations placed upon them by our patriarchal society. So what can we do about it? The most important thing is to raise awareness. We need to be aware of the issues men face and make others aware. The International Men’s Day website is an excellent resource in this regard: https:// internationalmensday.com/ The next important thing is to treat men better. We need to stop conveying sexist attitudes towards them. Men need to stop telling other men to “be a man” and “suck it up.” Women need to stop saying that “men are trash” or “boys stink, throw rocks at them.” Simply put, one does not inundate men from a young age with toxic messages like “real men don’t cry” and then act shocked when more men suffer from mental health issues or commit suicide because they were forced to bottle up their emotions. Men have feelings, too, and we need to start respecting that.
