18th Annual

Polk’s Beloved Bartender feature story started with the very first edition of the magazine and due to its popularity, the voting aspect became a staple component a few years later. Throughout the con test’s history, the magazine has collected more than 40,000 votes from dedicated readers wanting to recognize their favor ite hospitality professionals. This contest has quickly become our way of saying “thank you” to the men and women who work hard each day to provide superior customer service.

Typically, this popular issue was always featured in July to mark its first edition on the streets of Polk County. Fast for ward 16 years to March 2020, no one would have ever thought that our hos pitality industry would have been shut down mid-day on a popular holiday that typically packed the bars and restaurants in celebration.

Thanks to COVID-19, the hospitali ty industry was devastated leaving its employees to struggle with non-em ployment for an undetermined about of time. This coincided with the same time that our usual voting began. With such uncertainty looming, we decided to con tinue allowing votes to trickle in as we all learned what the “new normal” would be going forward. As a company, we also had to decide the best way to move forward, transitioning to an online maga zine, as well as how to honor an industry in a chaotic time. Deciding to hold off on our Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue from July to October was the best outcome.

Now, moving into 2022, we are finally seeing a slow increase with the industry even though there have been lingering shipping and supply obsta cles as well as cost of living and inflation rising. Patrons are feeling more comfortable with get ting back to their favorite “watering holes” which helps keep our economy also flowing! It’s been a tough road for all, but we have become a stronger com munity with perseverance.

2022 marks our 18th Anniversary as Polk County’s premiere dining and enter tainment magazine and it has been our pleasure to bring so many amazing sto ries and destinations to our pages. Over the years, our writers followed the careers of rising music stars, watched new busi nesses thrive and shared their unique perspective on this beautiful community. We are proud to be the publication that weaves entertainment, dining, events and more into a dynamic fabric that is truly vibrant and local!

For the second year, we put a little ghoulish twist on the Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue by releasing it during October as the Halloween Edition.

We encourage our readers to get out and explore the wonderful hospital

ity industry Polk County has to offer and say hello to our winners.

Finally, we want to take the time to thank our advertisers, readers and supporters for the wonderful memories and 18 YEARS of continued success.

Today & Tonight Magazine is the pulse of Polk County and we are committed to provid ing Central Florida with the best possible local entertain ment and event news.

Start the drum roll… Today & Tonight Magazine presents the 18th Annual Polk County Beloved Bartenders Winners…

CLASSIE SANDERS

MOJO FEDERAL SWINE & SPIRITS

130 S Tennessee Ave • Lakeland

How many years you have worked as a bar tender? 15 years.

How long have you worked for this company? 3 years.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender?

I don’t know if there’s a “secret” but two things I love are people and learning. I love to laugh and have fun with people and that makes bartending enjoyable. I also love to learn. New drinks, new liquors, new recipes, and new skills have kept bartending interesting.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

YES! You don’t know what you have until its gone. Not being able to get out, socialize, eat and drink at our favorite places was terrible!

Employees and customers both are happy things are back to normal and we can enjoy good food, great drinks, and amazing company TOGETHER!

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

The last year has been a busy one for me. I’m in nursing school and it’s been nonstop! The last trip I went on was with two of my daughters to North Carolina this past May to compete in their Junior Bible Quiz Regional competition. It was a fun road trip, the team did well, and we had our first “BUC-EES” experience and we loved it.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Traveling is a dream of mine! While I have dreams of Italy, Japan, and Greece I am most looking forward to taking my daughters on a cruise to the Caribbean after I graduate nursing school. It will be their first cruise and their first time to the Caribbean and I can’t wait to watch them enjoy it!

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

Electricity. I’m not built for outside life. A tent, like a nice one. Publix water, I’m not filtering my own. Cheese. Music and Books.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

In 6 months, I’ll be a nurse. I am so excited to help people, make them smile, and hopefully leave them feeling better than when I found

them. Kind of like being a bartender! The deci sion to leave the hospitality industry and bar tending was hard. I truly LOVE what I do. Over the years being a bartender has brought me and my family such a wonderful experience and I will miss it. Although if I could have it my way, I would be a stay-at-home mom and cook and clean all day and not have to work at all!

What is your favorite food? And why? Cheese. I didn’t choose the cheese life; the cheese life chose me.

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

I love my church VICTORY! I’ve been there for 11 years and I’m always in awe of the remark able things they do for this community! I’m a sponsor with Girls Ministry, coach for the Junior Bible Quiz team, and I have volunteered at the Dream Center here in Lakeland. The Dream Center serves the Lakeland community by meeting needs and offering resources all while inspiring and restoring hope through Christ’s abundant love!

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character? Sagittarius is my zodiac sign, and my best friend Laura will tell you that I embody that role very well. Energetic, outgoing, adventurous, curious, and confident fit my personality well. But you can’t leave out being blunt and argumentative which also fit into my repertoire.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

No. Won’t even think about it and would never go.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

When I was 9, I was Scary Spice from the Spice Girls, for obvious reasons. I loved dressing up, roaming my neighborhood, and getting a chance to be wild and fun with my friends! My neigh borhood as a kid was so much fun with every house decorated, every garage open, and every family outside having a blast!

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

Reese’s Cups for life!

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween?

What’s your favorite costume?

I dress up for work usually as we don’t celebrate Halloween so much as we just celebrate the fall season. I’ve dressed up as Beetlejuice, a scare crow, Winnie the Pooh and lots of others. Any time I can paint up my face and have fun with it and make customers smile is nice.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I hope I’m old, with great grandchildren, and surrounded by my huge family when I pass. My ceremony will be loud from laughter as the reel of pictures scroll across the screen at the church. My children, grandchildren, and family will tell stories of my love for them, my love for cooking, my love for God and after I’m ushered away to Queens “Fat Bottomed Girls” everyone will eat lots of food, play cards, and visit my grave often.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why.

I’ve been told I’m reminiscent of a wild horse.

I don’t like being tamed or told what to do also known as ‘hardheaded’. I enjoy adventure and roaming free. I would add in that I’m big, strong, and beautiful like a wild horse. I think that’s what my dad meant when he said I was “crazier than a wild horse on the loose”

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Hallow een inspired cocktail? And, what’s your sig nature cocktail?

ANYTHING WHISKEY! I love the warmth a wellmade whiskey drink gives and its perfect for fall. There are so many good ones from a fun s’mo res inspired old fashioned, a bright cinnamon maple whiskey sour, or a mysterious martini. Fall drinks pack a punch and taste amazing.

Is there anything you would like to add? We’d love to know more about you!

Visit Mojo Federal Swine & Spirits for yummy barbecue and amazing drinks with the best happy hour around! Catch me Sunday nights at Mojo now until April! Then I’ll be a customer instead of a bartender! Thank You Lakeland.

CAMILLE FARLEY

APPLEBEE'S WINTER HAVEN

201 Cypress Gardens Blvd • Winter Haven

How many years you have worked as a bartender? 13 years.

How long have you worked for this company? 6 years.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender? Bartending is a multifaceted job; it is so much more than just serving drinks. I believe that since I genu inely enjoy getting to know my guests and making people feel welcome and cared for it helps me stand out. Personality and memory is a big factor for me. If someone is having a bad day I try to be a good listener and give advice or just put out a positive vibe. I am at my best when I am joking around being silly with my regulars and getting them to try new drinks or telling funny stories and just making a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere. Getting to know everyone by name and remembering what they like and dislike is really important to me and I definitely believe that contributes to my bartending skills.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

For the most part I do believe we are back to “nor mal”. What a wild time that was. Everyday there were new guidelines we had to adhere to, it got very frustrating and depressing at times. Product availabil ity was one thing that was really frustrating to deal with that has gotten pretty stable again, finally. With everything stabilizing I have gotten back to being busy as normal and even gaining new regulars over the last year or so. I also enjoy getting to go out with my friends and having drinks at other local establish ments!

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

I took a trip recently to visit my friends in West Vir ginia. I grew up in Florida but lived in West Virginia for many years. Not being able to travel to visit my friends was heartbreaking. We got good at video chats and taking time to make phone calls, but noth ing beats in person visits. This last trip I was able to go to a concert and a beer fest and party with so many of the people I love - all in the same place!

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Wow, this is a hard question for me. I love traveling to new places and experiencing different aspects of life. If I had to pick ONE place, it would probably be to visit Norway. I have always wanted to take pictures of the Aurora Borealis, ride in a boat through the fjords, climb mountains, see some amazing concerts, eat different foods, and visit record stores there.

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

I am going to not answer this question with a literal survival aspect, and just go with things I would not want to live without in general ha-ha! So, I am going

to say my camera, a pen and notebook, beer, and a really comfy blanket.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your pro fession be?

If I wasn’t a bartender I would either want to work in or own some type of oddities shop or record store.

I’ve always been attracted to the unusual and cre ative aspects of life and music is highly important to me.

What is your favorite food? And why?

I absolutely love trying and cooking new foods, so this answer changes quite frequently for me. I tend to gravitate towards food with lots of spice or com plex flavor profiles. So, my basic go to favorites will always be Indian cuisine, super spicy chicken wings, and tacos!

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

I have always had strange and vivid dreams and over the years I started writing them down. Recent ly I have become more interested in other people’s dreams and how they perceive them and how to focus on dream recollection. I am just highly intrigued by unconscious thought and the psychology sur rounding dreams. I also started writing a short story compilation book based on some of my more vivid dreams.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character?

I am a Sagittarius and surprisingly enough I have plenty of the personality traits that go along with it.

I enjoy adventuring, being spontaneous, cracking jokes, having deep conversations, being passionate, and staying open-minded. I can also be stubborn and sometimes selfish but, the good outweighs the bad I think ha-ha!

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the take-away?

I do believe in psychics I have had too many odd experiences not to. I believe this world holds more than we can usually perceive. As far as going to see a psychic, I only did that once, in St. Augustine. It was a very interesting experience. She did a “past life reading” and told me quite a few things that I don’t know if I believe or not. It was a fun experience either way!

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

My favorite costume was called “The Sock Monster”.

It is the monster that steals single socks in the dryer.

My mom made the costume by sewing single socks of different colors to a sheet, kind of like a ghost ha-ha. My favorite year trick or treating was when I was about 8 or 9 and I remember my neighbors went all out with decorations and making haunted houses.

My friends and I all took turns hyping each other up and scaring the crap out of each other the whole night. I absolutely love that memory and I am still obsessed with going to haunted houses and decorat ing for Halloween.

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

My favorites have always been sweet/sour stuff like Skittles and Warheads. I do sometimes want choco late like a KitKat or Twix.

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume?

I absolutely love getting in costume. One of my favor ites I have done was last year, I dressed up as Geralt from The Witcher. I was covered in leather head to toe, had cat eye contacts, and a silver sword. I loved playing his character and pretend killing all the peo ple dressed up as monsters that I came across that night ha-ha.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beau tiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remem bered for? When my time comes, I would love for people to remember me as a good friend and confidant and as someone who always saw the good in life and tried to enjoy and experience as much as possible.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why.

I would have to say a cat. They can be wild hunters who are independent and fearless but then also have a soft side that enjoys being lazy and sweet. They love attention but only when they allow it. They are also great companions!

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

I absolutely love a good caramel apple martini. It’s an adult version of one of my favorite fall time treats so of course I have to have one (or many) every year! Also, I love beer so any kind of pumpkin ales or Oktoberfest style beers I am all about! This year for Halloween at work we are featuring our “Spooky Sips” which are the Dracula’s Juice and the Tipsy Zombie. My choice of a signature cocktail is called “Toxic Waste” and goes along with my costume for this year, a toxic sludge monster! It is a blend of green apple vodka, Midori, lime juice, pineapple juice, and Red Bull! Guaranteed to have you ready for all the Halloween parties!

Is there anything you would like to add? We’d love to know more about you!

I am a very outgoing adventurer and I love trying and learning new things! I love kayaking, being in nature, expressing myself artistically, playing music, attend ing as many concerts as possible, cooking good food, spending time with my close friends, and getting to know new people!

FRESCO'S SOUTHERN KITCHEN & BAR

132 S Kentucky Ave • Lakeland

How many years you have worked as a bar tender?

9 years.

How long have you worked for this company?

I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of the Fresco’s fam since 2019.

What is the secret to your success as a bar tender?

Lately, I believe you can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Doing what you love is freedom and loving what you do is happiness…that is the secret.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

As far as Covid-19 goes I think our industry is back on the right track. There has been no shortage of family and friends out enjoying brunch with one another on the weekends, and I love it! Also, it has been great to see so many people continue to book their events with us and keep the milestones moving whether it’s birthday parties, rehearsal dinners, weddings, or any special occasion. Our community is liv ing life for sure.

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

No, I haven’t yet. I do have a trip to Mystic Falls planned for the end of November! We are very excited about that, so maybe we can add a few more to the calendar in the upcoming months as well.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Scotland is still on my list.

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

Husband, my baby, my dog, mascara, & phone charger… that all seems reasonable.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

Hmm, whatever pays the most!

What is your favorite food? And why?

Chicken Parmigiana (it’s not me, it’s the baby.)

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

I have always admired the work that the SPCA does. Remi, my dog, was one of their rescue puppies. It’s safe to say that I love animals, and it’s important to help or donate when you can. I also love all the work the Polk County Bully Project has been doing. I saw they were having A Puppies on the Patio Event at the Greenwise in Lakeland Oct.1 as well as 5k run on Oct. 22 at the Yard on Mass I hope to attend.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character? Aries, it is 100% a personality trait at this point.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

I could be open to it, but I haven’t had a read ing yet.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

The Pink Power Ranger. I was Kimberly for 3 years straight, I think.

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

I used to love Nestle Crunch bars and Skittles. Now, I am an equal opportunist. Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume?

Yes, it’s so fun. (Khaleesi) I even did a Game of Thrones Theme “Save The Date” for my Wedding last year. It was great!

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I hope it would be a long time away from now. I would want to be remembered as the best Mother for sure, for everyone to always think of the happy moments, and leave behind the sad ones.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why. I recently came to believe a donkey might be my spirit animal! Have you heard their laugh? My laugh is outrageous.

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

I love a good Halloween Cocktail. The Sand erson Sangria is an interactive cocktail for the ladies. It’s made with dragon berry rum, triple sec, lime & pineapple juice, with a Cabernet float...stir it as you drink and mix the colors and flavors. The Fall Sour is a great bourbon cocktail, that’s made with Gentlemen Jack, apple pear “barmalade,” lemon, & brown sugar syrup! And is perfect for the season.

Is there anything you would like to add?

We’d love to know more about you!

Check in with me to get a peek at Baby Blake (whenever he makes his grand entrance) this month!

LEO'S LIVE (A.K.A. YBOR CIGARS & SPIRITS)

5263 S Florida Ave • Lakeland

How many years you have worked as a bartender? 8 years.

How long have you worked for this compa ny? 5 years.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender?

I have an insane memory when it comes to drink recipes and what a customer’s usual drink is. Ask me the name of said customer though and I’ll draw a blank. I’m pretty good at math too so that helps. I also Always smile, I swear.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

Mostly, I guess. There’s still some days where I’ll go through a whole bottle of hand sanitizer if someone appears sick near me but that’s a me problem.

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

Most trips I take are to go to a rock/metal concerts or festivals, so it felt good to do that again but then again I’m a bartender who works weekends on top of weeknight shifts so it’s a rarity. When I did get to go though, it meant that I could clear my head and get a break from the ‘lemon drops’ I constantly have to make so that was nice.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Scotland for the rain and castles. Also, Alaska for the scarcity of people and the cold. I want to go when its constantly night because I am a creature of the night...my lack of tan proves that.

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

My phone for my playlists I have on there, a scrunchie because there is no way I’m dealing with my hair while stranded, my eyebrow pencil because when I get rescued there’s NO way I’m getting picked up without those drawn on, both knee braces cause that sand is gonna do some damage, my special pen.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

Party planning most likely, I throw some killer parties.

What is your favorite food? And why? Sushi and pasta, not together obviously. Sushi is amazing (Tsunami Sushi is the best) and pasta because it’s pasta... Chinese food is good too. And tacos. Oh, and carrots, I loveee carrots.

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

I threw a metal benefit a few years ago for a regular who was battling cancer. I want to start doing more of those types of benefits to help people with their medical bills. It hits close to home, and I’ve seen the damage it can do not just physically, but emotionally and financially as well so to help someone in any way I can and bring my love for metal into it is something I am passionate about.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character? Aries. Looking up the traits I can see how I can be one except the optimistic part. I’m more of a realist than that but everything else seems pretty accurate.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

I don’t typically like to talk about what I believe in because there is a lot of uncertainty... but sure maybe? I had a reading done once and it was trippy. It was a message from heaven reading but I’d rather not talk about it cause I’ll cry and I just got ready for work tonight, make up is expensive and I don’t wanna do it again.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

Ehhhhh I don’t remember much from that time but I’ve seen pictures. I always seemed to dress up as a witch, devil or vampire, some thing along those lines. I do remember my sib lings and I having this swap party with candy and I pretty much just made them give me whatever my favorite candy was and I’d trade them my candy corn or whatever other gross candy I had in my bag. Sorry about that guys but I was the oldest so...

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

Probably Reese’s or Turtles back then. Now I just eat whatever candy my 7 year old tells me to try because “it’s soooo good and I have to buy more!”

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween?

What’s your favorite costume?

Yeah, I dress up for our bar’s Halloween cos tume party. I really enjoyed dressing up as Beetlejuice because I got to wear these striped overalls that were comfy.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for? I don’t want a funeral or to be buried. Turn me to ash and scatter me wherever. Throw a party with Jell-O shots and an open bar while blast ing metal music. I want to be remembered for my dazzling personality and charming smile. Also want to be remembered for being an awe some mom who raised the best kid.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why. A bat. They like the dark, creepy but kind of cute, misunderstood because really, they are just adorable sky puppies. Plus, they are asso ciated with vampires and who doesn’t want to be associated with them besides werewolves?

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

Anything with caramel in it has my heart. My signature cocktail is gonna be an Apple Cider Sangria again because it was really good, and I want to make them for my shift drink at the end of the night. Come check out our shot specials we’ll have during October too that will be scary good!

Is there anything you would like to add? We’d love to know more about you! Thanks again to everyone who voted for me! Ya’ll are the best customers out there even when you do accidentally order a “coke and Captain” or a “Tito’s and vodka”. Still got love for you! Ybor/Leo’s has been the best bar to work at with the live music and family atmo sphere between the bartenders and regulars. I’m lucky to be here for sure.

How many years you have worked as a bartender? 3 years.

How long have you worked for this compa ny? 4 months.

What is the secret to your success as a bar tender?

I like to have fun! When people come into the bar to have a drink, they’re there to have fun.

So, I try to sing, laugh, dance. Tell jokes, make sure they have a good time. I also try to treat people the way I want to be treated. I also love to have fun making drinks. And of course, shot shot shots!

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

Yes, to some point. I honestly believe sitting at home for 3 months changed a lot of people. But for the most part the people that like to go out and be social and have a social cocktail with other people. I think those people are getting back to normal and it’s kind of hard to say “nor mal” because what the hell is “normal”?

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

Yes, in the past year we have traveled to Pana ma City Beach and to Williamsport, Pennsylva nia. Being able to travel to see my children and my grandchildren is very important to me. So even if I couldn’t fly, I would drive the 17 hours if I had to.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Well Ireland was one on my bucket list and so was Costa Rica and I’ve been to both. So, I would say the next place I would like to visit on my bucket list would have to be Paris, France, as I have family that is from Paris.

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

Well, we’ve been in the area for 3 years now and I haven’t gotten too much involved in the past. When I came from Brandon, I was involved with the Brandon Foundation. Here I’ve been getting involved with the Culpepper’s Car diac Foundation. Try to support and go to the events that Melanie Brown Culpepper hosts for the Culpepper’s Cardiac Foundation and then I’ve also tried to support and help fundraising for the Leopard Legacy in honor of Tim “Tim mers” Leopard. I believe that they’re two great organizations in our community to get involved with. Melanie raises money and actually helps people get into the medical field through schol arships and also supplies different businesses with defibrillator machines.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character?

I’m a Leo but I really don’t follow much into the horoscopes. Occasionally when I read things that I see on Facebook about Leos I’ll say yes, it kind of matches my personality and some times it doesn’t.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

I went one time for a psychic reading. I was pregnant with my second daughter and had already signed the papers for my tubal to be done after my daughter was born. The psychic told me and my mom that I was going to have three children and I laughed in the psychic’s face because I said I’ve already had the paper

signed to have my tubal when this baby is born. Well, when my daughter was born the hospital between my doctor and the hospital they lost my paperwork so they wouldn’t give me my tubal. Three years later I had my third daugh ter and then I had my tubal. Yes, I do believe in psychics and mediums and I do believe in ghosts and all that paranormal stuff!

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

I remember when Grease came out, I had my mom put hot rollers in my hair to look like Sandy did at the end of the movie. My brother and sister were the ones that always took me out trick or treating. They always picked on me to try to scare me and hurry up and rush me so they could get on to what they wanted to do with their friends instead of hanging out with their little sister.

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

I’ve always been a Reese’s girl! Today I would have to say Snickers or Reese are my poison.

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume?

I still love to dress up for Halloween. I don’t care if it’s Halloween. I like to dress up. Let’s have a costume party in the middle of July!

Especially a disco! As an adult I have two of my favorite costumes I have worn, and I actually wound up winning a contest with my Cinderella and my Ursula.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I love throwing a party and I love being in the “hostess with the moistest”. That’s another reason why I like being a bartender. I get to throw a party every day. I would want everyone to come and have a blast at a good party and remember me as just being a fun-loving person.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why. Well, that’s my horoscope. I am a lion. Hear me roar! I like it because I’m the king of the jungle.

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

I am a sangria girl! I’m a little simple and my favorite cocktail to be honest with you is a White Russian. Like I told you, I’m a simple girl!

Is there anything you would like to add? We’d love to know more about you!

I’m just as simple, fun, loving gal. I like to be true to myself and be true to my guests that come to my party every day - The Ines Show!

How many years you have worked as 5 a bartender? 5 years.

How long have you worked for this compa ny? 2 years.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender?

The way we make our guests feel is the most important part of our jobs as bartenders. I want you to feel safe, comfortable, and elevated when you come get a drink with me.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

Absolutely. People want a place to where they feel included and together. We’re too social as creatures to be kept far apart for long.

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

This past summer I took a two-month cross country road trip, visiting 14 states and 4 national parks. It was life changing to be able to experience this beautiful country.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Anywhere in Greece, the islands are gorgeous, and the waters look magical.

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

Multiple books (which I think should count as one item), water and food, an instrument to play (violin), journals and pens.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

A wildlife biologist, with a focus on field work.

What is your favorite food? And why? Ramen, any style. It always sounds good to my stomach even with nothing else does.

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

Anything that supports wildlife conservation, the planet is a magical place that deserves to be protected.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personali ty type defined by this character?

I’m a Virgo sun, which definitely defines my analytical thought process. But my compassion come from my Cancer moon and my charisma from my Leo rising.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

I feel like my partner reads my mind from time to time but I wouldn’t say I believe in psychics.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fond est memory of Trick or Treating?

Winter Haven had a Halloween event down town and my grandma took me to it. I was the dapper werewolf and she was the bride of Frankenstein. We got in the newspaper that year.

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

Dark chocolate anything, forever and always.

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween?

What’s your favorite costume?

No, I definitely got lazy. Now I usually just throw a onesie on and call it a day!

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered as someone who treated others well. I want to make others feel comfortable and accepted. What’s your “spirit animal”? And why. A wolf. I’m a social creature and love platonic intimacy, but only with people I’ve already built a relationship with.

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

I made a maple pear vodka mule last December which was a hit. But I’m a sucker for any rum-tiki style drink.

Is there anything you would like to add?

We’d love to know more about you!

I love to bartend because it’s taught me how treat others well and understand their needs. That has been one of the greatest skills I’ve cultivated in my lifetime. It’s something every one should take the time to learn.

How many years you have worked as a bartender?

3.5 years.

How long have you worked for this compa ny?

1 year.

What is the secret to your success as a bar tender?

A positive attitude! Pours, recipes, and speed are all important, but I want everyone who enters my bar to leave happier than when they entered. There’s always room to grow as a person and bartender at work, but only if you have the positive mindset to make it happen.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

Yes, it took a while to adjust and there are still some minor differences. The year after shutdown was rough but I’m glad to see things returning to normal!

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

This year I was able to travel to Gatlinburg, Tennessee to see my brother. It was my first time meeting my first nephew, so it meant a lot to me. With everything crazy happening in the world, it’s nice to be able to take some time off and spend it with those you love.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? Germany, the birthplace of Rumple Minze!

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

My family, my cast iron skillet, NFL Sunday ticket, all of my vital organs, and since we are on an island a stocked tiki bar would be nice!

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

If I wasn’t bartending, I would be on the air waves doing either radio or TV work.

What is your favorite food? And why?

My favorite food in the whole world is my dad’s chili. Something about a spicy, Midwestern, bean filled chili beats every food on the globe.

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

I support the movement to stop decorating for Christmas before thanksgiving.

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personali ty type defined by this character?

Taurus, I truly don’t believe in zodiac signs, so I have no idea what a Taurus personality type is. However, with that being said, no matter what I tell someone my zodiac sign is, they always say “oh, that’s so you”.

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

No, no, and one more no just for old times’ sake.

As a child, what was your favorite Hal loween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

My favorite costume has to be the year me and my whole staff dressed up as teams from the movie “Dodgeball”! “No-one makes me bleed my own blood”. But my fondest memory of trick or treating must be the year my best friend had a broken leg. Our moms let us ride in the bed of the pickup all night and we hit so many houses!

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

Reese’s, Reese’s and the only appropriate answer is Reese’s

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween?

What’s your favorite costume?

Yes, every year, the past few years I’ve been a priest but this year I will be the owner of my establishment “Leo”.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I want to be remembered as a good father, brother, and son. I genuinely believe the best thing you can be on this planet is a good family member.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why. A bat, because I too have a taste for good, fermented fruit.

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

Favorite Halloween cocktail is a “Brain Hemor rhage Martini” 2 parts Peach Schnapps, 1-part Baileys. Layer them and drop in a little Grena dine. My signature drink is a neat shot of Rum ple and the guest who remember it, always love it!

Is there anything you would like to add?

We’d love to know more about you!

I’m from Nebraska, I love the Detroit Lions, I was an all-American in speech and debate, and I have my first child on the way, it’s a boy!

BRITTANY PRINE

THE PINK PIANO

1015 S Florida Ave • Lakeland

How many years you have worked as a bar tender?

14 years.

How long have you worked for this compa ny?

Almost 7 years

What is the secret to your success as a bar tender?

Creativity and a love for people. Sometimes people come in and say “I want a chocolate covered cherry martini...do you think you could make that?” The answer is always yes! Being behind the bar gets my creative juices flowing and keeps things interesting. I have always loved being around people, hearing stories and listening, but also telling my own, giving advice, being a shoulder to cry on.

Do you feel that we are back on track with the hospitality industry after coming out of the ‘dome and gloom’ of COVID-19?

Yes, we are finally headed back to normal!

Not all the way there yet, but almost. The Pink Piano did so much to stay afloat during the pandemic, from Wine on Wheels (home wine delivery) to live streaming for artists to have a platform to play on. I still remember the first day we were allowed to fully open back up I cried tears of joy because I had missed every thing and everyone so much!

Have you been able to take any trips over the last year? Where and what did it mean to be able to travel again?

My husband and I recently went to ATL for a weekend and found some pretty cool places...

I always ask the Uber driver where the near est spooky dive bar is because that’s where I want to go! It was amazing to be able to be out again and see the spots, eat the food and drink the drinks without the looming fear of Covid everywhere.

Where is the one place in the world you want to visit?

Definitely Madrid, Spain. I want to see the Prado but also the shopping!

On a desert island, what 5 things can you NOT live without?

My family, my wine key, my toothbrush, a Star bucks pumpkin cream cold brew and the Sun day newspaper.

If you weren’t a bartender, what would your profession be?

Either a teacher or a psychologist, I love to learn as much as I love to impart knowledge onto others.

What is your favorite food? And why?

Oh, that’s a tough one for a foodie like me, I love all food! I have worked in great restau rants/bars all my life so I’ve been lucky to have been around the best of the best. To narrow it down... it’s a catfish po boy with a slice of American cheese, a big bowl of pad Thai with extra fish sauce, some tuna kobachi with spicy mayo or a medium rare bone-in ribeye. I can’t pick just one!

Do you have a passion project or non-profit that you admire or are involved with? And why?

Red Tent Initiative and Polk Pride. Red Tent is a group of survivors and allies working to end domestic abuse in the community, we have frequent events at The Pink Piano to fundraise for them and help any way we can. Polk Pride is just all about being true to yourself, uplifting your neighbor, loving who you are and being accepting of others even if they aren’t the same as you. Diversity is what makes life exciting!

What’s your zodiac sign? Is your personality type defined by this character?

Virgo but on the cusp of Leo... and yes, this is me to a T! Most days I’m humble, practical, love to help any way I can...other days I want to rage to loud and fast punk rock music and dance on tables (Thanks Andrew for always indulging me)

Do you believe in psychics? Have you ever had a reading? If so, what was the takeaway?

Haha, not really. I think it’s fun to listen to what they say, my grandma had a reading once and

the woman told her that she had a hex on her life, but the psychic could remove it for $800. She didn’t go back, and she’s still alive so...you decide!

As a child, what was your favorite Hal loween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating?

I have always LOVED Halloween. It’s my favorite holiday and time of year. My favorite costume as a kid would definitely have to be when I dressed as Robert Smith from The Cute, I teased my hair all up and crazy, wore some tattered black clothes and smeared red lipstick. My Dad said, “I’m not sure what you’re dressing up as, this is the same stuff you wear every day!” My sisters and I would trick or treat all night long, come home and dump all of it out and trade for our favorite candies, Chelsey always got all the Snickers.

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult?

I was the weird kid who always liked the stale bag of pretzels shaped like Halloween figures... and I still am!

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume?

Oh,for any occasion I can! My favorite costume would have to be Elvira (Mistress of the Night, not the country song) with the long black dress and big black hair.

Queen Elizabeth II just passed away. And a beautiful ceremony was held in her honor. When you pass, how and what do you want to be remembered for?

I always want to leave people better than I found them, so if I can be remembered for making someone feel good about themselves on a bad day, I’d be happy. I’m the mother to 2 young children, Beau & Ivy, who are my favor ite people in the world, they have softened me and made me who I am today, so of course I want to always be remembered as their Momma.

What’s your “spirit animal”? And why.

I am a dog person, so naturally my spirit animal is a dog. I am loyal and protective of my family and friends, and I have been known to pee out side from time to time!

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? And, what’s your signature cocktail?

I, of course, love all things pumpkin spice, so a pumpkin spice martini is my favorite...equal parts vodka and brandy, Bailey’s, and pumpkin spice cream, topped with a pinch of cinnamon. My signature cocktail would be an espresso martini, it consists of vodka, espresso, Bailey’s and chocolate wine, chocolate rimmed glass. It’s the perfect nightcap to any evening!

Go Watch RRR

I discuss politics enough in this column. Let’s talk about something good for a change. Let me tell you about the best movie I’ve seen—and the best movie you’ve never seen.

Chances are, you’ve never heard of RRR. It’s an Indian film that had a limited theatrical release in America earlier this year before being released onto streaming. Since then, the movie has gained popularity and acclaim—and for good reason! It’s a real surprise hit!

RRR (which is short for Rise Roar Revolt) takes place during the British occupation of India in the 1920s. A young Indian girl is taken from her home village by a wealthy British govenor and his wife. Her kidnapping serves as the inciting incident for the film’s two main protagonists to take action.

The first character, Bheem, is a guardian from her village tasked with tracking her down and bring ing her back. He is a strong man capable of fighting tigers and other wild animals with only his bare hands.

The other character, Raju, is a British officer tasked with tracking down Bheem, who is suspected of being a freedom fighter plotting against the British. Raju proves fearless, as he single-handedly leaps into a mob of violent protesters and mows his way through them with his baton.

Both characters inevitably cross paths and join forces to save a young boy in a river from a steam engine about to fall from a burning bridge. They fish the boy out of the water with an Indian flag just before the train and bridge collaps es.

ricane.

Did I mention this is only the first 30 minutes of the movie? Right before it plays its opening title? In a film that’s three hours long?

Words cannot do this film justice. It’s a melodramatic rollercoaster of high-octane action and emotion that needs to be fully experienced. As I wrote in another review for this film, RRR is what would hap pen if “a Japanese anime received a live-action adaptation with the budget and production value of a Marvel movie and with intermittent Hamilton-style musical numbers.”

The best I can say about this movie is that if the promise of epic explosions caused by arrowlaunched grenades, over-the-top Bollywood-style dance numbers, and hordes of wild animals being unleashed onto an unsuspecting crowd caused by a truck literally crashing into a party doesn’t excite you, then I don’t know what will. Just turn on Netflix and watch it yourself.

Why am I talking about this film? Because we need more unabashed fun and creativity in movies again. In a glut of never-ending sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes, an original film that does something unique is truly a rare gem. People always complain Hollywood never releases anything new and origi nal anymore. But Hollywood only continues releasing sequels and remakes and reboots because audi ences watch them in droves while new movies get overlooked.

Following their daring res cue, Bheem and Raju become fast friends, unbeknownst to them that they are both rivals from opposing factions. As the dramatic song play ing over their “best friends forever” montage explains, when the two learn each other’s secret, it will be like a volcano clashing with a hur

Are you tired of Hollywood rehashing the same old intellectu al properties? You want them to make new franchises based on new movies? Then get out of your com fort zone, stop watching the latest Disney or Marvel flick, and watch something new for a change. In short, go watch RRR!

• A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it’s expensive and cre ates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reusable bottles, but bottled water always seemed more conve nient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled water without spending the money, and I happily am not creating waste.

• “Firing up the grill? Don’t get hasty. Preheat. Cooking times are based on an even cooking tempera ture, and you’ll get that good sear on your steaks or chicken. Use a grill thermometer and you’ll know when just the right time is to put dinner on the grill!” — T.E. in South Carolina

• Ever wonder how long your peanut butter will last? On the pantry shelf, you can expect it to hold for 7-12 months if stored in a cool dark place. After opening, it will last 3-4 months in the fridge.

• “To keep pants on a hanger from creasing, I slit a paper tow el cardboard roll and slip it over the hanger. I tape it together and then put the pants over it. This has worked for me for many years.” -- I.R. in Nebraska

INNOVATIVE UNDERWATER PORTRAITS

The Subject of Lakeland Art Show

Special to T&T Magazine

Scott Audette Underwater is pleased to announce the art exhibition, “A Siren’s Peril: An Underwater Portrait Retrospective,” running Oct. 31 to Nov. 11 at ARTI/fact gallery in Downtown Lakeland.

Makeup artist Stephanie Paul and Lakeland Photographer Scott Audette bring their talents together in this incredible show aimed at pushing limits of imagination, light, water, artistry and body.

Stunning underwater portraits of 10 talented “zombie” mermaids and mermen, along with the props, behind-the-scenes videos, and costuming, will be on display. The exhibit also will feature underwater maternity, kids, party, individual and couples portraits by Scott Audette Underwater.

“Being underwater allows me to throw away all the rules of photography and

just create,” Scott said. “I love the way the water creates patterns and motion. Playing with light, reflection and shadow presents a wonderful challenge. When Stephanie approached me about working with her on a project to see how Zombie-like mermaids and mermen would photograph underwater, I was all in. Each subject brought fabulous and unexpected emotion, underwater prowess, and artistry to their expressions and poses and was great to work with.”

The timing of the exhibit, sponsored by Polk Arts & Cultural Alliance and Philip Shenkman CPA, is no coincidence.

“At Halloween time, everyone wants to test the limits of adornment and disguise. I wanted this project to stretch everyone’s imagination a little as we delved into the mysterious world of underwater creatures,” Stephanie said. “The results are beyond what I originally imagined even, and I am so excited to share our art with

you in this exhibit.”

Scott is a longtime sports photographer, serving as team photographer for the Tampa Bay Lightning for 20 years and shooting for The Associated Press and Reuters. He also shoots lifestyle and travel images for Viva Polk magazine and Visit Florida. A certified scuba diver, Scott combined his two passions and opened Scott Audette Underwater in 2020.

Stephanie, a licensed esthetician and hair and makeup artist, has extensive expertise in the film and effects industry as well as in weddings and spa care. Her commercial credits include “Biography: WWE Legends” TV documentary and several film shorts.

All prints will be available for purchase.

ARTI/fact is at 820 N. Massachusetts Ave. Gallery hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday. Admission is free and open to the community.
