TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Happy Fall Y'all With yet another crazy month behind us – COVID-19, wildfires, hurricanes and politics; the nation continues to work towards a better sense of normalcy, and with that, so too comes a new season…fall. What will it bring? Hopefully a better temperament with a light of hope as with the slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity. When the calendar turned its page to September, it seemed as if the restless community used it as a time to bring newness to their spirit. More so than ever remembered, and earlier than usual, houses and yards became sprinkled with mums, pumpkins, haybales, scarecrows and other autumn and Halloween décor. Is it a way to keep themselves occupied from the boredom of the new stay-at-home-more ideals? Me thinks so. It’s nice to see so many getting into the seasonal spirit and taking pride in dressing up their front doorways, porches and yards. There’s been so much uncertainty and fear for the many previous months that having control over something as simple as decorating one’s house for a holiday is a pleasure no one can take away. These are the new ways to uplift our spirits and find a little peace. Enjoying simple times as a family

unit that also conjures up happy times and memories from the past; enjoying and decorating for the fall season. Community festivals may be changing, Halloween parties may be changing and the thrill for children in costume running up and down neighborhoods begging for candy is also an uncertainty, but we can at least control our own little space. Our own little slice of happiness and safety. To that I say, bring it on! Let’s all decorate “to the nines”. Neighborhoods in a sea of orange, and black, and purple, and green. Or whatever your favorite fall color combination is! Only we can take back our happy place, and our happy community. We must choose to be better, choose to be happy. Spirits need to be uplifted! Happiness is contagious…to that I say the holidays are needed more than ever before. Next, I foresee this being the year that communities start decorating for Christmas as soon as the calendar hits November 1. Twinkling lights, Christmas trees, and jolly Santa displays helping us pave the way to joy until this 2020 is flushed down the toilet for good making way for a new and better 2021.

COMPLETELY UNCHAINED

Van Halen Tribute Band Will Be Rocking Out at Chain O' Lakes Park by James Coulter Would you love to see Van Halen playing their greatest hits? The bad news is that they’re not on tour. The good news is that the tribute band, Completely Unchained, is, and they’re coming to Winter Haven. This Van Halen tribute band will be rocking out at Chain O' Lakes Park in Winter Haven on Fri., Oct. 16. Come watch as the nation’s #1 tribute to Van Halen performs all of their greatest hits, from “Running With The Devil” to “Hot For Teacher.” As their website states: “Nobody does Van Halen like Completely Unchained!” Their lead drummer, Gene Henriksen, recently talked with us about his band and their upcoming performance. Here’s what he had to say: 6

OCTOBER 2020

Q: So tell us a little about yourself and your tribute band.

band, all of that combined seemed like a fit for all of us.

A: I’m 58 years. I have been hosting this Van Halen tribute band for about 10 years, Completely Unchained. Originally, I was a drummer for a Billy Joel tribute band from Long Island, New York. Then I moved into a lead singer of a Van Halen tribute band. We have been around for 10 years.

Q: How is it performing during these uncertain times, especially with about COVID-19?

Q: What do fans love most about your performances? A: We are popular all over the country, even in Kuwait and Aubu Dahbi, we have performed there for the troops. And we are excited to play at the field in Winter Haven. I think it is the songs [they love]. The fun, the excitement, the energy Van Halen brought as a

A: I think people are leery about going out. We have done well at our shows because people love Van Halen. As for our performance on Oct. 16, we hope for a good turnout. Hopefully all the Van Halen people will come out and rock and roll. Q: What are you looking forward to the most with this upcoming concert? A: Our fans, we expect them to have a good time, a lot of fun, and we hope to come out

and entertain them that night. We look forward to meeting the fans. We love to meet the fans. It is a big part of what we do. Q: What can they come to expect from your upcoming concert? A: I hope they have as much fun as we have with it. Without them, most of the time, we play the audience, they see all the fun that we have and hope it generates the same amount of fun for them. That is what Van Halen music was all about. It was having a good time with good old rock and roll. Q: What has allowed your band to be as successful as it has been? A: I think this band brings more. We have the look, we have the sound. I think the success come from everyone being on the same page, and understanding the job. You have to take this seriously if you want to be the best. So it is four guys traveling and getting along as brothers and thinking the same way.

Q: What’s the secret to putting on a good show? A: I think the secret, first, you have to love Van Halen. Second, you have to play the part. You got to look like the guys in the band. I think that goes a long way, because there are bands that play tribute. An Eagles band, nobody looks like that. But when you are doing an AC/DC, or Van Halen, or Motley Crue or Kiss, I’d say 50 to 60 percent is about looking the part. Q: Anything else you want to add? A: We are looking for a good night. I am hoping the people love Van Halen, and we are looking to kick some butt. Completely Unchained will be hosting their performance on Fri., Oct. 16. from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Chain of Lakes Park Stadium, located at 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Thinking Outside The Box During COVID By Elizabeth Morrisey When the entertainment industry came to a screeching halt in March due to COVID-19, magicians Michael Barron and Justino Zoppe had to think fast on how to continue bringing in more income. They both had to think outside the box. Barron and Zoppe were performing on large cruise ships and booking shows and they realized early on switching gears would keep them afloat. Barron, from Orlando, decided to try a couple of different things. First, he filmed some cooking shows on YouTube that included some magic and comedy then wanted to pursue something totally different. “I had to get creative with a new business model,” Barron says. “I went in a different direction. It’s a cool concept.” He is currently modifying vending machines. Instead of dispensing soda and chips, the machines sell interesting little items bar patrons may find fun. “It’s an opportunity to surprise people. We have about 75 items.” The first group of vending machines will be popping up in some Orlando bars soon with items such as adult coloring books, drinking games, overnight kits, art work and mystery bags. “There can be some crazy items. We put them in bars to get people to stay longer. It’s little surprises and

8

OCTOBER 2020

things you wouldn’t expect.” Prices range from $0.50 to $25 and Barron says he is currently talking with six bars to see what products they are interested in carrying. “Vending is popular in Japan. It was time to have it catch on in America.” Zoppe, a magician based in Auburndale, did a 180 degrees turn and is now focusing on turning a hobby into a business. “My entertainment friends thought I was crazy for changing gears,” he says. Video production was something he did on the side and now he’s educated himself on new technology important to the real estate industry. His company, Next Generation Video Productions, has taken the virtual home tours to a whole new level. Matterport is a new way to show homes with 3D tours. “You’re building a 3D model,” Zoppe says. “It takes measurements. The client can go anywhere they want and it’s like you are in the house.” And with his wife, Daniela, being a real estate agent it was a win, win. “Florida is a destination and with the 3D tours, my wife has sold houses site unseen. It’s an amazing tool.” But Zoppe is still a performer at heart. Once things get back to a new normal, he hopes to continue with real estate while performing on the side. “I can still (perform on) the cruise ships once per month and have

fun,” he explains, although he knows things will probably be different. “The other weeks I can still run the business.” Local restaurants and breweries also had to make some changes and continue to have challenges. The Florida Brewery in Auburndale continued focusing on its craft beers but had to lean more on its non-alcoholic beverages when COVID-19 hit the area. “We realized diversity is key,” says CFO Stacey Oakley. “Having a diverse portfolio of beverages and customers is what helped us survive the roller coaster this year, otherwise I am not sure where we would be today.” One of their most popular beers is sold in the Caribbean and when tourism came to a halt, half the normal volume was being sold. Unfortunately, the challenges are not slowing down and may last another 8-9 months, she says. Breweries are now dealing with a

shortage in cans and glass. “We have orders but no glass or cans to put it in. We are shifting to other outlets and in constant communication with our suppliers.” While staying afloat thanks to non-alcoholic beverages, they were able to get their craft beer stocked in several local Publix’s. Their beer Beach Me Up may soon be seen in Sam’s Club. The Florida Brewery will soon be presenting to them on Zoom. Oakley said they are also anxious to get their downtown restaurant Crave & Copper back open, which suffered a fire back in December. It’s been a challenge finding enough contractors to finish the renovations, she said. They have shifted to adding an outdoor, casual area where patrons can grab snacks and drinks. “People may be more comfortable being outside,” she says. “The pandemic put a lot of things in perspective for our team and for our vision.”

Why Are You Mad At Me? “Have I now become your enemy by telling you the truth?” – Gal. 4:16 (NIV) Two years ago, my editor, in his infinite wisdom, decided to give me a monthly column. I have the freedom to discuss any topic I want, yet I’ve opted to write about the “uncontroversial” topic of politics. Can you blame me? It’s impossible these days to turn on the television, see what’s going on in the world, and NOT have an opinion about it all. It’s especially impossible this year, what with the West Coast literally on fire and people dying from COVID-19, not to have an opin-

ion about everything going on. Even then, I try to tread lightly in this column. Despite being political, I do my best to remain non-partisan, addressing topics in a way that people on either side of the political spectrum can at least understand, even if they disagree with me. I do my best to corroborate my opinions with facts from verifiable sources. And while I make the occasional snide remark, I hold back on being overly hyperbolic. Believe me when I say I’m holding back. Other columnists have said far worse things than me. (Seriously, read how the Esquire’s Charles Pierce describes Trump!)

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

And yet, despite my mild-mannered demeanor and milquetoast opinion, despite everything I say being easily verified with an internet search, my column still raises ire in some readers, and they’ve been more than eager to express their outrage. I’ve received my fair share of hate mail. Even my own loved ones tell me when they don’t like what I’ve written. I guess that’s part of being a political columnist. After all, you don’t express your beliefs and not expect others to express their own. Free speech is a two-way street, even if that speech isn’t pretty. But the question remains: why all the hate? I can understand hating a far-right firebrand like Ann Coulter or a far-left looney like Michael Moore. They say provocative things to provoke people. But why me? Why hate me? Some people would claim that my politics are “radical.” Are they really? Here are some of the “radical” opinions I’ve expressed in past columns: • We could house every homeless vet for less than what our military spends on a trillion-dollar jet that can’t fly. • In fact, housing every homeless person would cost less than allowing law enforcement and public services

to deal with them. • Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy would create more jobs and generate more revenue. • Replacing our welfare system with a basic income would lift more people out of poverty at less the cost. • Reforming the immigration process would deter “illegal” immigration more effectively than building a wall. These opinions may sound “radical”, but they’re not. They’re not “socialist” or “communist.” They’re not even “big government” or “anti-capitalist.” If anything, such minor changes would cut government spending and foster a more vibrant free-market economy. They would create jobs and revenue. We would still have a constitutional republic with a laissez-faire economy. If anything, my “radical” opinions are more “limited government” and “fiscally responsible” than any sitting Republican. And yet some folks think I’m the Second Coming of Marx. If you disagree with what I have to say, fine. Feel free to disagree. If you think I’m wrong, fine. But the fact is—I’m not! Everything I write is easily verifiable with a simple internet search. So have I become your enemy because I speak the truth?
