TOP PLACES TO WATCH THE GAME

Are you ready for some football?!

Football season kicks off this month. What could be better than watching the game from the comfort of your own house? How about watching it with several other sports fans somewhere with a bountiful supply of beer, nachos, and hot wings?

Whether you’d prefer to watch the game at your local sports bar, or if you’d prefer to enjoy it somewhere more upscale, nothing goes better with sports than good food and great company. Here are nine of the best places in Polk County to enjoy football season:

Winners Circle Sports Bar & Grill

4215 Florida Ave. S., Lakeland

863-644-9464 | winnerscirclesportsbar.com

They don’t call it Lakeland’s Hometown Sports Bar for nothing! With more than 35 widescreen televisions playing the latest sports packages, you’re sure to have a good view of the game.

Of course, if you’d prefer to host your own private watch party, their John Haas Stadium Club provides the perfect venue with a holding capacity of 30 people. As their website states, you can “enjoy the lively atmosphere of our sports bar while also having your own exclusive space to mingle!”

Winners Circle has a diverse menu of finger foods and appetizers to quench your sports fan cravings. Their Whiskey & Wings special

Brew Hounds has more than 17 widescreens with sports packages from DirecTV including NFL Sunday Ticket. So you’re sure to have a good view of the big game while you’re downing beer, playing darts or pool, or simply hanging out with friends. And while they do not serve food, there is a pizza place right next door.

In celebration of their 14 year anniversary, Brew Hounds Sports Lounge is promoting beer bucket specials during NFL games 5 for $14! Check their Facebook page for weekly specials.

Just in time for football season, they’re introducing the sports bar staple favorite of buffalo wings. Pick these finger-licking wings in three styles (buffalo, sweet chili, and lemon pepper Dry Rub) in servings of eight and twelve.

And what’s a sports bar without drinks? This football season will see the return of their Football Drink Features, available all season long every Saturday and Sunday. Enjoy any Budweiser, Michelob, or Yuengling drink for $4.49 pints or $5.99 22 oz.

With more than a dozen widescreens and a festive patio and atmosphere featuring live music on many nights, The Brass Tap is the place to be on game night or any night, as their website states: “Whether your party is large or small, you’ll feel right at home watching the game or simply catching up on old times.”

Every day offers a diverse selection of food and drink to choose from, especially with their $5, $6, and $7 food and drink specials. Whatever flavor you prefer, sweet, spicy, salty, or even sour, you’re sure to pair your best food with your best beer.

Glory Days Grill

6005 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven 863-496-6122 | glorydaysgrill.com

Remember the good old days when your neighborhood had a local eatery that displayed your local team’s colors and where you and the boys would arrive to celebrate your team’s victory? Glory Days Grill remembers. And they’re bringing the nostalgia with them.

Glory Days Grill, as their website explains, “is a sports themed family-friendly American grill and bar that combines an award-winning menu of freshly prepared appetizers, entrees and sandwiches with entertainment that appeals to all ages.” Whether you want to grab a bite to eat or host a private party, this place has it all. With more than a dozen wide-

screens, you always have a good view of the big game. And nothing makes the experience better than their drink deals. Happy Hour is all day every day with $3.25 Budweiser and $ 3.75 Bud Light. Enjoy half-off wine bottles during Wine Down Wednesday. Or get a $1 Busch Light in a 22 oz collectible cup.

Local Pubs and Bars

Sometimes, as the old TV theme goes, you really need to go where everyone knows your name and they’re always glad you came. Fortunately, there are plenty of local bars and pubs with great offerings for game day or any day.

Linksters in Lakeland (209 E Main St.) and Paddy Wagon in Winter Haven (5535 Cypress Gardens Blvd.) serve great drinks and on special occasions food, with televisions usually tuned to the big game.

Central Tavern in Winter Haven (273 W Central Ave.) aspires to give their guests, “the best upscale neighborhood bar experience”, as their website claims. With widescreens playing every major sports package, you can watch the big game while you down a cold one, toss darts, or shoot some pool. Their outdoor patio is especially great for catching the big game and enjoying the good weather.

Commercial Restaurants

Sometimes the best place to go is somewhere that is anywhere. Duke’s Brewhouse started in Plant City with eateries open in Winter Haven and Lakeland. With more than 20 widescreens and a large selection of craft beer, it’s the ideal place for your next game day. Beef ‘O’ Brady’s offers traditional wings for 99 cents every Wednesday on Wings Wednesday. The WingHouse Bar & Grill offers bottomless boneless wings every Wednesday at $14.99. Hooters, meanwhile, considers itself the “capital of football nation” with every league and every conference playing on their screens. Buffalo Wild Wings, meanwhile, has several widescreens that make one big screen for the main games.

Bartow Ford To Host Powerhouse Country Music Star Lee Brice with Special Guest Randy Houser at Its Second Annual Concert on the Lot Series

Bartow Ford is sending its event plans into high gear again with an incredible Country Music concert that will feature multi-platinum GRAMMY nominee and CMA and ACM award winner Lee Brice.

Lee will be supported by one of his good friends, country music vocal powerhouse Randy Houser—so it is going to be a night you do not want to miss. Doors will open at 5 PM, and music begins at 6:30 PM. A variety of food and beverage vendors will be on hand.

Bartow Ford is partnering with 97 Country and The Dallas Bull for the November 11 event, which will be held at the dealership.

In addition to all the great entertainment that will be offered—one lucky concert attendee will win a Ford F150 that night. Contest details will be available on BartowFord.com as we get closer.

“We are so excited to bring this entertainment experience to Polk County, at a ticket price that makes it affordable for more people in our community,” said Benny Robles Jr, President of Bartow Ford. “We promise it will be a night to remember.”

Go to BartowFord.com to buy your tickets, which will be just $31, and a portion of the proceeds goes to Wounded Warriors.

LEE BRICE

When Lee Brice isn’t selling out arenas, writing and recording songs, or building new brands like American Born whiskey, you’ll find the family man with his wife Sara, two young boys, and baby daughter. Meanwhile, with more than 14 million in RIAA-certified

sales and streams, and nearing three billion spins on Pandora, Brice continues to enjoy massive success at country radio, digital streaming services, and on the road. Lee is also a GRAMMY nominee, a CMA nominee and a double ACM award winner, and he’s taken six radio singles to Number One: “A Woman Like You,” “Hard To Love,” “I Drive Your Truck,” “I Don’t Dance,” “Drinking Class,” and “Rumor.” Garth Brooks, Jason Aldean, Kenny Chesney, and others have recorded his songs, and he’s performed on numerous TV shows, including NBC’s Today, ABC’s The Bachelor, NBC’s The Voice and FOX’s Miss USA 2018. Lee’s “Rumor” is the current single from his fourth studio album, Lee Brice, released November 3, 2017, on Curb Records. The RIAA Certified Platinum single is Lee’s sixth number one hit appearing in the top spot on the Billboard, Mediabase Country Radio, and SiriusXM’s “The Highway” Top 30 charts. It has also surpassed 280 million on demand audio & video streams in the U.S. with over 300 million worldwide. For more information, go to LeeBrice.com.

RANDY HOUSER

With an inimitable voice The New York Times describes as “wholly different, thicker and more throbbing, a caldron bubbling over,” Randy Houser racked up three consecutive No. 1 hits and more than four million in singles sales to date with his Stoney Creek Records album How Country Feels. He topped the charts with the

title track, “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight” and “Goodnight Kiss” (also his first No. 1 as a songwriter) and earned critical acclaim for his powerful delivery of the Top 5 smash and CMA Song of the Year-nominated “Like A Cowboy.”

Houser added a fourth No. 1 to his catalogue with “We Went” from his 2016 album, Fired Up

Houser’s sixth studio album Note To Self is available now via Magnolia Music Group and features ten tracks all co-written by the Mississippi native. Currently in the top 30 and climbing at Country radio, lead single and title track “Note To Self” marked his “powerful return” following

2019’s critically-acclaimed album Magnolia, with MusicRow boasting the Mississippinative remains one of country music’s very finest vocalists.” With multiple sold-out shows in 2022, including an at-capacity stop at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Houser wrapped his coheadlining tour with longtime friend Jamey Johnson and is currently on the road with Cody Johnson. Along with preparing new music and a relentless touring schedule, Houser landed onscreen roles in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film Killers of the Flower Moon starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and more, as well as the inspiring The Hill starring Dennis Quaid. Why Can't The World Be Better

Rarely can I say one of my columns was inspired during a walk. This is one of them.

So, I was walking in the mall one day when one of the store owners waved me down. I walk through the mall nearly every day, so I had seen him before and, chances are, he had seen me many times before, too.

He asked me if I was heading toward the food court. I told him, I was. He then asked me if I knew the gyro place. I told him, I did. He then gave me a ten-dollar bill and asked me if I could pick up an order for him. The request seemed curious, but I told him I would.

So, I went to the gyro place at the food court, picked up his order, and walked back to the store to give him his food and change. He thanked me, I told him he was welcome, and I went on my way.

enough that I was trustworthy enough to do it for him.

Can you imagine that? Would you be willing to trust a random stranger like that? To take your money, go on a random delivery, and return with your order? I don’t think I ever could. Chances are, neither could you.

How much better would the world be if we could trust total strangers like that? What a better world that would be.

One where I could leave my laptop sitting on a table in a café while I take a bathroom break and come back knowing it would still be sitting there and not snagged by some random thief.

Or where I could leave my keys in the car running while I step into a store somewhere and come back knowing the car and keys are still there.

1. FOOD & DRINK: What does the acronym “IPA” stand for in a beer?

2. LITERATURE: Who is the author of “The Hunger Games” series?

3. U.S. STATES: Which state has the most lighthouses?

4. GEOGRAPHY: What is the capital of New Zealand?

5. GAMES: What is a perfect score in bowling?

6. SCIENCE: What does an auxanometer measure?

7. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a female donkey called?

8. MOVIES: Which holiday is celebrated at the end of “When Harry Met Sally”?

9. TELEVISION: Which entertainer has hosted “Saturday Night Live” the most?

10. ANATOMY: What is the anatomical name for the kneecap?

Like I said, I had seen the guy before, and he had probably seen me many times before; yet, at the same time, we were still complete strangers who barely knew each other, let alone each other’s names. Yet he trusted me enough to hand me his money and have me deliver his lunch for him.

Now, most folks who know me know I’m a rather trustworthy guy. But, for all this guy knew, I could have easily left that mall with a fresh ten-dollar bill. Or I could have stopped by that gyro place and walked away with a free lunch. Yet he trusted me with his money, his order, and his delivery.

He may have known me in passing (like I said, I routinely walk around the mall), but he didn’t know me personally. He didn’t even know my name nor me his. He had no reason to trust me with this random delivery. Yet he did, and he was fortunate

Where I could leave the house without locking the door. Or where I could trust a random stranger to look after my personal belongings while I run a quick errand. Or where a random stranger could trust me to deliver his food to him on a whim.

Why must we live in a world where we can’t trust other people? Where other people can’t be trusted? Where we must remain vigilant and in a constant state of fear that random weirdos will swindle you or mug you or pickpocket you?

Wouldn’t it be nice to live in a world where people are nicer to each other? Especially random strangers? Where you may not know someone, but you know they can be trusted?

4. Tavares. The song was too long and had to be split between a- and b-sides of the records.

5. “Mr. Blue,” by the Fleetwoods, in 1959. The song isn’t to be confused with the Catherine Feeny “Mr. Blue” that ended the season six finale of “BoJack Horseman,” the animated adult comedy TV series. Although the Fleetwoods’ song might have been the better choice.
