which hosts other cultural events including the Bloomin’ Arts Festival in the spring and Syfy Bartow in the late winter. The Chalk Walk Festival proves especially unique due to its unique medium, which attracts plen ty of curious onlookers and creative artists alike downtown.

In a small cardboard box sitting on the sidewalk, a hairless cat stares up at you with its big blue kitty cat eyes. Scribbled under neath the box is the warning: “Please don’t feed the tiger.” The little thing is so adorable you want to pick it up, but you can’t—not because you shouldn’t, but because it’s not a real cat. It’s only a chalk drawing!

Bridget Lyons, an artist from South Tampa, drew this nearly three-dimensional chalk drawing during a past Bartow Chalk Walk. She loves to doodle many subjects in chalk, and she plays around with perspective to make them pop up from off the pavement.

“It is an interesting world of artists with a unique art form,” said event organizer, Trish Pfeiffer. “It is the only art show like it in Polk County, and it is neat to see art come alive. These artists are on their knees for eight hours in the sun with garden foam for their knees and butts because they are literally working laying down.”

ask a lot of great questions...[and the Chalk Walk] is the kickoff to the fall season. I am looking forward to going out there and hav ingLyonsfun!”is one of several dozen chalk artists from across the nation and even the world who convene in Downtown Bartow to kneel on the ground and use the pavement as their canvas during the annual Bartow Chalk Walk Festival. Presented by Main Street Bartow, and sponsored by Frost Law Firm, it is Polk County’s only professional chalk artForevent.two days, chalk artists will gather at Fort Blout Park, located at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Main Street outside the Polk County Courthouse. There they will sketch, draw, shade, and let their imag inations run wild. The only limitation, aside from their designated art space, will be the amount of chalk they have, and, of course, theirTheimagination.ChalkWalk Festival will be hosted by the award-winning Main Street Bartow, the community’s second oldest program,

Pfeiffer started the Bartow Chalk Walk Festival in 2018. However, the creation of the event started a year earlier through a conversation with a friend, Eric Michaels, a VJ from Lakeland. She wanted to start a new cultural event for downtown Bartow, and he told her he knew a brilliant chalk artist who could help her with that. The chalk artist in question knew several other artists, and they

For the past three years, she has been attending the annual Bartow Chalk Walk Festival. She loves the overall hometown atmosphere and the curious onlookers who stop by to watch her bring her chalk subjects to “Ilife.enjoy a small-town event that has a very engaging audience,” she said. “I enjoy the crowd and how engaging they are. They

were all invited to the inaugural event the following year.

Matt McAllister, who lives in Palmetto, first attended the event in 2018. His art focuses on portraits of pop culture icons, especially from movies and comic books, and colorful animals. He was attracted to the festival both by its small-town vibe and the overall enthusiasm of its orga nizer.“Ilove the location being in the center of town in front of the courthouse,” he said. “I’m most looking forward to link ing up with fellow artists and the great volunteers of the festival.”

“It is interesting to see what other shows and events they go to,” she said.

“It has grown into a community of chalk artists across the world...It is neat to get international artists. We look forward to it.”Overall, curiosity draws in the crowds and allows the event to flourish as it has these past few years, especially during these uncertain times. Chalk drawing is a unique art form with diverse possibili ties. Some artists simply sketch out their art, while others apply paint to the back ground. Some even employ three-dimen sional elements to make their art pop off from the Regardlesspavement.ofwhat the artists create, plenty of curious attendees arrive over the weekend to see the pavement of the downtown community come to life with vibrant colors and intriguing designs. When they arrive on Saturday, they see the art being created; and come the next day, they see the hard work come to frui tion with the final design.

Pfeiffer maintains the event’s Facebook page. Through it, she has seen the wide scope and reach of the event, seeing where the many artists and attendees arrive from across the world and the other events that they participate in.

“It is a neat art form,” Pfeiffer said. “People are interested in it, and they find an interesting art form as they come to the event. How amazed they are by how good the work is. They come on Saturday not knowing what to expect, and then they come back on Sunday because they want to see the finished product. So that is a neat thing when they return.”

The first Chalk Walk in 2018 drew in 22 artists. Since then, the event has con tinued to grow up until 2020, when it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandem ic. The event returned in 2021 with even more artists, and now this year’s event is expected to bring in more artists and attendees. Even during a rainstorm in 2019, the chalk walk has always drawn in large creative and curious crowds.

The Bartow Chalk Walk Festival will be hosted on Saturday, Oct. 1 and Sunday, Oct. 2. From 9 am to 4 pm at Fort Blount Park, located at 343 W Davidson St, Bartow 33830. Awards will be conferred on Sunday afternoon. The event is open and free to the public. For more informa tion, visit their Facebook page at: https:// www.facebook.com/ChalkWalkBartow

Chalk artists from across the country and even around the world arrive to participate. One notable artist is from Istanbul, Turkey. He initially started attending Bartow Chalk Walk, and also visits another in Georgia, as well as par ticipated in a big project in Washington, D.C.Another artist from Mexico has been attending for many years. Not only have they won best of show in previous events, but they were also selected by Sheriff Grady Judd himself for the titular Sheriff Choice award.

Everyone loves a good homecooked meal. However, sometimes you want one that’s not made at home! Sometimes, you just want to get out and let someone else do all the hard work of preparing a home-cooked meal, made from scratch, and with fresh ingredients. Whether you crave a piping-hot chicken pot pie fresh from the oven, warm melt-in-your-mouth macaroni and cheese, or Chicken Rockefeller prepared with creamy spinach dip and fresh chopped bacon and cheese, you can eat homecooked comfort food away from the comforts of home at Lucille’s American Cafe in Winter Haven. From the Black and Bleu Shrimp, lightly blackened shrimp with homemade bleu cheese dress ing and the house special chili made with sirloin, to the Bread Pudding with spicy bourbon sauce, or Betsy’s Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting, Lucille’s American Cafe provides the com fort of All-American cuisine. It’s about the homemade meatloaf to smokehouse BBQ chicken to the three-cheese baked macaroni and the grilled pork chops, all enjoyed in a comfortable, hospitable dining environment in Downtown Winter Haven.Everything from the main course to the desserts is made from

for his manager degree, and running Weston eatery for 23 years, he felt the time was right to open another eatery in Winter Haven.

“I think it is in my blood,” Beth said.

“I felt our concept could speak for the locals down here, being simple comfort food that grandma used to make, with love from the kitchen,” he said. “We thought it was the right concept for the right market, the right loca tion, the right comfort base. And we felt like we had come in five years earlier, it would have been too early; and if we had come five years later, it would have been too late. So the timing was really good and exactly how it has [been] expected.”

Both Paul and Beth feel confident that their commitment to fresh food will draw in the downtown crowds. Most other eateries skimp out on their claim to freshness, while Lucille’s makes everything, including the barbecue and ketchup, from scratch.

Beth and Paul had previous experience owning and operating their original eatery in Weston since 1999. They have since decided to expand their venue by opening another eatery. They searched high and low through Winter Haven until they chose their current location. Witnessing all of the economic devel opment in the area inspired them to set up shop in downtown, Beth said.

Gimme S'more: homemade graham cracker crust, marshmallow and vanilla ice cream.

They first opened their doors in April. The past three months have seen progress with their eatery in stages to ensure their staff was well trained with only the highest standards. After all, they want to ensure their customers only receive the most personable service as though they were family, Beth said.

Chicken Rockefeller: chicken breasts topped with creamy spinach, bacon, and parmesan cheese served with sides.

“Before so many places [were about] eating out with fast food...people would gather at the table as families and talk about their day,” Beth said. “That is what we are trying to rec reate in the sense of coming together, bringing people together...whether it is breakfast or cocktails or a family sharing a meal. That is our goal, to bring people together to share a meal with family and friends and enjoy each other’s company.”

American Cafe is located at 205 3rd St SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. The eatery is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. from Sunday to Thursday, and from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. scratch with fresh ingredients. Even their cocktails are made from fresh-squeezed juices and homemade sour mixes. Nothing is pre pared from frozen or pre-cooked ingredients. Everything you eat and drink is as homemade as if they were prepared literally at home.

“It is classic comfort food,” said Beth Nunez, co-owner and manager. “Our motto is: sharing the stories that unite us while sharing classic comfort food that mom and grandma used to make...[It] is all made from scratch, made to order, made with love.”

Paul Nunez, co-owner, has had service industry experience since he was 16 years old. After attending Johnson & Wales University for culinary, Florida International University

“When you are in the service industry, espe cially in a business like this, feeding people and seeing people enjoy with friends and family, celebrating, I think those are the things that are fulfilling to me as an owner... It feels good. It is comfortable. It is casual. So, I think providing a respite from the home, if you want a homecooked meal, you can have it here, whether it is an appetizer or cocktail from the bar, or sitting down with the family in the dining room or enjoying our home made comfort food prepared from scratch by our staff.”

“Even at the bar, we add a level of fresh ness that we do not feel people are doing,” Paul said. “[We] fresh squeeze our orange juices, making our own sour mix, there [are] no potions or powders so we are trying to bring a level of quality freshness and home made prepared food to the community with out it being fine dining or deliver an expen siveLucille’sfare.”

Beth and Paul Nunez wanted to create the experience of enjoying homemade comfort food outside of the comforts of home. Since opening in April, they have provided resi dents and visitors alike such a luxury, prepar ing meals that bring people together for good food and good times.

The past three months have been difficult yet fulfilling. They have since started oper ating seven days a week and offering a full menu with breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and cocktails. They hope to add blue plate and happy hour drink specials soon. Until then, they hope to slip out of the slow season and experience a greater influx of customers over the next few months.

We live in uncertain times. Our society stands on the brink of chaos. Thankfully, plenty of brave men and women remain dedicated to protect ing and serving our communities. They are the thin line upholding law and order. They alone prevent society from descending into lawless anarchy. Every day, they risk their lives to protect innocent people. Even then, very few people show appreciation for their services. Due to uncaring politicians, their departments remain underfunded and understaffed. Many of these craft items are created using wooden items such as ladders and wheelbar rows crafted by her brother. She especially enjoys the floral and holiday arrangements she creates with the ladders, as they allow people to display their holiday spirit when they don’t have a place to hang a wreath, she explained.
