& Country Music Jamboree Two Great Events One Awesome Venue

by James Coulter Do you want to celebrate the Luck of the Irish without having to wait until St. Patrick’s Day? Can’t wait until March to guzzle some Irish whiskey or eat corned beef and hash? Well, wait no longer. Balmoral Resort Florida will celebrate Paddy’s Day early with its upcoming Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day Party. On Sat., Sept. 18, Balmoral Resort will be commemorating the halfway point to Mar. 17 next year with an early St. Patrick’s Day celebration filled with good old-fashioned Irish fun. The festivities will kick off around 10 a.m. on their Feltrim Sports Village Complex with Irish hurling and football through the Gaelic Athletic Association. The games will be played by six teams from across the state and country, including Orlando, Tampa, and Atlanta. The Irish frivolities will continue at 4 p.m. at the Balmoral Bar and Grill with traditional Irish dancing. Then at 6 p.m., Guinness representatives will host classes on pouring the perfect Guinness pint, along with a Zoom presentation on the making of 69 Fighting Irish whiskey. The day of Irish fun will conclude with a big music act at 7 p.m. and a band at 8 p.m.

8 SEPTEMBER 2021

“So we have a full day of Irish events,” said Garrett Kenny. “We had a good interest on social media. The fact that it is an outdoor event will help us at the moment with COVID, people will be able to keep their distance...So we are looking forward to a veritable day, and we are looking forward to an Irish culture day.” If you prefer more down-home American fun, then the Country Western Jamboree will sure be a real hootenanny of a good time. The twoday event will offer excellent country music, good food, and overall good old-fashioned country hospitality. The event will kick off on Fri., Oct. 29, with Them Sweeney Boys hosting their hilarious musical act, “Down Home Revue FullLoving Family Entertainment, with Picking and Grinning Swamp Humor” at the Balmoral Indoor Event Center. Sat., Oct. 30 will feature a great selection of country music bands playing all day long, with good Southern food served, including barbecue chicken, ribs, corn, baked beans, and specialty drinks served in Mason Jars. “Overall, we're trying to accommodate another group of people,” Kenny said. “We Celtic Conundrum to perform at the Halfway know Polk County really likes country, so we to St. Patrick's Day Party. Traditional Irish dancers will perform along with Irish Hurling games at the Feltrim Sports Complex at the Halfway to St. Patrick's Day Party Sept 18th.

Them Sweeney Boys will host their hilarious musical act October 29th at the Country Music Jamboree. kicked off the two-day event with the Country Western Jamboree. Trying to do outdoor entertainment and keep people entertained.” Since first opening its gates in 2017, Balmoral Resort Florida in Haines City has expanded its amenities at its 115-acre vacation-home community. In 2019, they opened their Feltrim Sports Village, a 5-acre sports facility that includes a sizeable multi-purpose playing field. Last year, they opened their Balmoral Event Center, a 10,000 square venue that can accommodate 150 people. Unfortunately, the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has slightly hindered what the resort can do with its new facilities. Currently, while their pool area can accommodate 400 people, they are only providing half-capacity at 200. However, thanks to their newly installed sound system, they can allow people to spread out more in the area, Kenny said. “So we are looking at 200 people at 50 percent capacity at both events,” he said. Earlier this year, they hosted their inaugural Battle of the Bands, which was attended by 11 local bands and more than 200 people. Such a great turnout showed that people were willing to venture out to outdoor events after nearly a year-long pandemic. Kenny hopes that they will experience an equally great turnout at these upcoming events. As with many other local establishments,

Balmoral Resort Florida has been suffering staffing shortages, and hiring new staff is difficult. Even then, despite these uncertain times and the uncertain circumstances surrounding them, Kenny has high hopes for the future, both for these upcoming events and also for events yet unplanned. “Last year was quite scary. We did not know what to expect,” he said. “The world was starting to adapt to COVID-19 out there. People have become vaccinated...and we do not see business being fully restored until probably around Feb 2022. So it is tough for people. But

we continue to offer people outdoor with wellspaced events, that will keep them happy. We are always looking for feedback. If there is an event that people want to see, we would certainly like to hear through social media about what that event is, and we will do our best to accommodate our audience.” Balmoral Resort Florida is located off of Highway 27 in Haines City, at 124 Kenny Blvd, Haines City, FL 33844. For more information, visit their website at: https://www.balmoralbarandgrill.com, https://www.balmoraleventcenter. com, Facebook.com/BalmoralBarAndGrill.

Balmoral Resort will host the Halfway to St. Patrick's Day party on Sept. 18th and the Country Music Jamboree on Oct. 29th & 30th.

Who Is Your Neighbor, America? We all remember the parable of the Good Samaritan. In case you forgot this story from Sunday School, here’s a recap: Jesus was approached by the Pharisees. They asked him what was the greatest commandment. He answered: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself.” The Pharisees, wanting to confound him, asked: “And who is our neighbor?” Jesus replied with the following parable: A man, who had been beaten and robbed, lay dying by the road. A priest passed him, but did nothing. A Levite, a temple assistant, passed him, but did nothing. Then a Samaritan passed him. The Samaritan stopped, healed the man’s wounds, and took him to a nearby inn, where he paid for the injured man’s room and board for as long as the man needed to rest. Jesus asked the Pharisees which of the three men acted like the injured man’s neighbor. The answer was obvious: it was the Samaritan. So the answer to the question, “who is my neighbor?” was also obvious: everyone is your neighbor, even a Samaritan. Most of us have heard this story ever since we were little, but upon hearing it, we have often asked the same question: what, exactly, is a Samaritan? And why was it a big deal for Jesus to suggest even a Samaritan was someone we should love as our neighbor? Israel was once divided into two kingdoms: Israel in the North, and Judah in the South. Judah kept the original capital city of Jerusalem. The Jews there continued to visit the city to worship at the Temple and offer their sacrifices. The Jews in Israel, however, created their own capital city, Samaria, and built their own temples at Dan and Bethel. The Jews in Judah considered this heretical, as they deemed the Temple of Jerusalem the true dwelling place of God. Furthermore, the Jews in Israel often intermarried with foreigners

and combined their pagan beliefs with their own religious beliefs. The Jews in Judah considered this abominable, as they were forbidden from marrying foreigners and worshipping their gods. As such, the Jews of Israel became more ethnically diverse, and they were soon called Samaritans. The Jews of Judah, who considered themselves the true Israelites, called the Samaritans “dogs” and “halfbreeds.” The blood between the two kingdoms remained bad. When the Israelites returned from exile in Babylon, the Samaritans offered to help them rebuild the Temple, but the Israelites refused their help. Another story tells how the Samaritans snuck into the Temple and defiled it with old bones, making the place unclean for worship. The Samaritans allegedly even aided Israel’s enemies, including the Romans, which inevitably lead to Rome’s occupation. So when Jesus suggested the Samaritans were “neighbors” that His followers were to love as themselves, His proposal was radical. He was telling them to love people who were not only of a different ethnicity and religion, but who were also considered the enemies of the Jewish people, having allegedly commited unforgivable atrocities against them. And yet Jesus commanded His followers to love them. Not surprising coming from a guy who preached, “Love your enemies.” So in light of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, when you see news reports of poor Muslim refugees fleeing from Afghanistan, ask yourself: what would Jesus do? Would he agree with political pundits who say we turn them away because “they don’t belong here”? Or would he insist that we, as a “Christian nation,” have a responsibility to welcome them with open arms? Ask yourself: who is our neighbor? POLK MUSEUM OF ART GALLERIES Come Alive with the Sounds of Music

Special to T&T Magazine This Fall, the Polk Museum of Art and Lakeland Symphony Orchestra are partnering to bring the performing and visual arts together in a oneof-a-kind exhibition, creating an immersive and multi-sensory viewing experience for art and music lovers alike. Guest curated by musicians of the Orchestra, “Pictures at an Exhibition,” opening September 11, pairs artwork from the Museum's permanent collection with hand-picked musical selections performed by the Orchestra musicians themselves. The exhibition is inspired by the work of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s ten-piece suite created in 1874 of the same name. Mussorgsky composed his “Pictures at an Exhibition” suite to commemorate and honor the loss of his dear friend and artist, Viktor Hartmann. After Hartmann’s sudden passing in 1873, over 400 of his pieces were staged in a memorial exhibition. Mussorgsky visited the exhibition and was so moved by his beloved friend’s artwork, he composed “Pictures at an Exhibition” in just three weeks, creating his own musical interpretation of viewing ten of Hartmann’s drawings and paintings in the show. The Museum and Symphony’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” carries Mussorgsky’s concept fully into the 21st century. Similar to the composer’s experience a century-and-a-half earlier, while viewing this new Museum exhibition, each visitor will have the opportunity to enjoy a curated musical pair22 SEPTEMBER 2021

ing selected and recorded by Lakeland Symphony Orchestra musicians. Easily accessible codes and links will be available next to each work for viewers to scan, allowing them to hear each musical piece while viewing the artwork. “We are thrilled to collaborate on this exhibition to help arts patrons draw a connection between the art forms that they love,” explains Amy Wiggins, executive director of the Lakeland Symphony Orchestra. “Sometimes, it’s hard to make the through-line, but we were intrigued by how to draw that connection and create a musical and visual narrative. The performing arts are so emotional, it’s hard to put into words. By drawing this connection and having our musicians tell their musical story about a work of art, it gives our patrons and the community a better understanding of how the arts can connect and how they can tell their own story.” In addition to the exhibition, the Museum and Symphony are also introducing the “Gallery Concert Series.” With four unique concerts differing in theme and ensemble performances, the “Gallery Concert Series” will host Lakeland Symphony Orchestra musicians as they perform in the Museum galleries. “We have always been intrigued by the idea of

elaborating upon visual art with musical performance as a means of activating the space of our galleries,” said Dr. H. Alexander Rich, executive director and chief curator of the Museum. “When we began our conversations about the concept for a collaborative, guest-curated ‘Pictures’ exhibition a few years ago, we became enthralled by the idea of a more holistic audience experience, appending the art on display with music to be enjoyed individually by each visitor. We quickly realized the next obvious step was to take our musical activation of the space of the Museum one giant leap further and use the exhibition also as a catalyst for live symphonic performances in the galleries.” Four concerts will be available throughout the season. Tickets will be available for purchase to the public on August 23 and are available through PolkMuseumofArt.org/GalleryConcert. Concert dates include: “ICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION October 14, 2021 at 6 pm Mussorgsky’s beloved “Pictures at an Exhibition’ is reimagined for wind ensemble.
