TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

What Will COVID Holidays Look Like? As summer comes to an end, hah, and “fall” begins, so does our holiday season. The calendar ticks down the days of August and out pops the first signs: funny-faced plastic pumpkins, skeletons, witches’ hats and extra candy flowing from the aisles. Halloween is on its way. Typically the most fun month of the holidays, October is usually packed with community Fall Fests and Craft Fairs, Haunted Houses, city hosted family events featuring Costume Contests along with Fun and Games; the grand finale is Halloween night with adults hosting parties and kids in costumes running down streets to get to as many homes as possible to fill up

their buckets with candy. What does the COVID October and Halloween look like? Most events have been canceled. Budgets are tight. People are stressed. I feel bad for the little kids that may not be able to experience the fun and mystery of Halloween. Or it may look like this: all costumes come with an approved face mask and not the mask kids want to wear with their costumes, parents squirting their kids’ hands down with sanitizer all throughout the night, kids waiting at houses for candy not in groups but 6 feet apart; do the owners mark off their sidewalks with “stand here” guidelines and give out candy sporting masks and gloves?

Next, it’s on to Thanksgiving. Time for families to come together, cook big dinners, watch football games and over stuff themselves with turkey and pumpkin pie. Or, people opt for the lower maintenance version of Thanksgiving by gathering at a restaurant for a nice meal or holiday buffet. Hmmm, will we limit the guests at our home? Will the shelves be low on baking supplies or turkeys? And, how will our restaurants only allowed to operate at 50% be able to handle the overflow of people needing to be fed? Football games? Who knows... Next it’s December, the most magical month of the year with Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Community Holiday Events, Christmas Parades, Holiday Decorating, Shopping, Food, Parties, Gifts and Santa Claus. The shelves at stores are already sparse, and online orders are taking longer to process so how is holiday shopping going to be joyful and fun. I think it’s going to be more like anger and frustration. And what about poor Santa? No kids allowed to sit on his lap to whisper in his ear all the wishes on their gift list. I foresee it being an EXTRA long

line with each family spaced 6 feet apart, all in masks not being able to get close to Santa so not to infect him with COVID-19. He can’t chance getting sick or his BIG night flight delivering toys around the world will get canceled! Talk about spreading cheer around the world, it would be more like spreading another round of the coronavirus via a fat man in a red suit in a sleigh with his reindeer. Do we sanitize our gifts before we open them? Guess our Christmas and New Year’s Eve parties will also be a little more subdued as well…. hmmm, we always look forward to the holiday season; the magic, the good feelings, the spread of holiday cheer. The COVID holidays seem to be a little bleaker, a little more cautious, a little more un-cheery. Here come the holidays, instead of a Ho-Ho-Ho. It will be a Oh-No-No! By the way, I would suggest starting all of your holiday shopping now. Many online orders are taking much longer than usual to fulfill, so some are getting canceled out after waiting for 1-2 weeks for items to be processed. The year of COVID-19, the gift that just keeps on giving…here’s to hoping that 2021 will be a better year. Can it get much worse?

by James Coulter Have you been cooped up in your house all summer due to social distancing? Has the lockdown driven you up the walls with cabin fever? Do you want to escape the house and enjoy the great outdoors? Then head on down to Camp Mack for some good old-fashioned chili and cornhole! Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina & RV Resort, will be hosting its inaugural Fire On The Lake Chili Cookoff 2020 & Cornhole Tournament on Sat., Sept. 26. Hosted at the camp’s scenic Steamboat Landings, the event will allow participants to enjoy a family-fun weekend in the great outdoors with chili, cornhole, crafts, and more. The Chili Cook-Off will allow both adult and youth teams to cook up their best chili in categories such as traditional red, homestyle, 6

or verde within this International Chili Society (ICS)-sanctioned competition. The winner will be crowned as the Camp Mack champion. The Cornhole Tournament will be hosted in the same location as a one-day tournament hosted by the Polk County Cornholers. Test your luck at tossing bean bags into holes for a chance to win a cash prize of $500 for first place. Other festivities include live performances by local bands all day long on the Steamboat Landings waterfront stage and a craft fair with various vendors set throughout the grounds. If you’re looking for a great day outside after spending several months inside, this event is for you. Special precautions will be made to maintain a safe environment through social-distancing at the event. public tasting has been eliminated with judging to be conducted by judges. “I think I will have a great turnout because it is a great way to be outside,” said Kevin DeNell, Executive Vice President & Chief Branding Officer. “It is exciting to be back, judging, and qualifying people for the world championship [at the chili cookoff]. And with cornhole, we are looking for a good throw down as well. Everyone loves to throw cornholes.” Located near Lake Kissimmee at Lake Kissimmee State Park,

Camp Mack offers 35,000 acres of rugged Florida wilderness and water, with opportunities for camping, fishing, boating, hiking, and RV-ing. As their website states: “Whether you are an aspiring professional angler looking for that trophy large mouth bass or just looking to hook up with family and friends in an authentic ‘Old Florida’ lakefront setting, Camp Mack, a Guy Harvey Lodge, Marina and RV Resort is for you!” This will be their first time hosting this chili cook-off and cornhole tournament. This event is similar to their annual barbecue cookoff, Rock N’ Brews BBQ Festival, which will be hosted on Thurs., Oct. 22 this year. Their barbecue festival is always popular, so they’re hoping that their chili cook-off will prove equally popular. “[We’re expecting] about 20 cookoff teams at the event,” Kevin said. “Chili [cooking] is one of those outdoor activities you can do that is fun. You can cook and compete in camaraderie as a cooking team.” Fire on the Lake will be hosted on Sat., Sept. 26, 2020, from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Camp Mack, located at 14900 Camp Mack Road, Lake Wales, FL 33898. We just stand there and play. All of our energy is put into the music. We want the performance to sound exactly like the album,” says Martin. ONOMATOPOEIA on·o·mato·poe·ia: The naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the sound associated with it (as buzz, hiss).

By Erica Smith

Courage Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. — Maya Angelou You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, ‘I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along. — Eleanor Roosevelt Be courageous. I have seen many depressions in business. Always America has emerged from these stronger and more prosperous. Be

brave as your fathers before you. Have faith! Go forward! — Thomas A. Edison “You have plenty of courage, I am sure,” answered Oz. “All you need is confidence in yourself. There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid, and that kind of courage you have in plenty.” — L. growing lack of courage. This pandemic has enhanced the best and worst in people, and we will be dealing with the financial and emotional effects for decades. That thought is well… depressing. I stole this from a meme, but we are not in the same boat while we are all in the same storm. What we need is an infusion of courage and not fear. The recent examples of civil unrest and protesting is a result of fear. Until we find the resiliency and grace to make difficult societal changes, we will not move forward. Accepting the status quo is the opposite of bravery. It is not easy to accept, but we still have much work to do as a nation. The opportunity to thrive should be available for all. It is a shame that it took a virus to bring the inequity to such a harsh light. Investing in the future will take creativity, open minds, and more importantly, open hearts. The path forward will be paved with fearlessness as we accept our

American story that needs more

voices. We need to start by telling the entire story, warts and all.

What would our school system

look like if we told our forefathers’ entire story without the

romance and showed the good,

bad, and the ugly? What would

happen if we embraced independent thought and encouraged

academic heroism? What would happen if we invested more in

our schools and less into our mil-

itary? These questions need to be addressed in our time of rebuilding. What we have lost as a com-

munity is great, but what we can

gain from this time of unrest and fear should be more significant.

I do not want to go back to how

things were. I want to move for-

ward with courage, creativity, and a renewed passion for change.

Perhaps that is the way to find a better boat for the next storm.

Like ‘schadenfreude’, which means “pleasure felt at someone else’s misfortune.” Or ‘backpfeifengesicht’, which means “a face that needs to be punched.” I wish they had a word that meant “something you love and hate simultaneously.” That word would sum up my feelings for The Walt Disney Company. I love Disney. I always have. Its movies, shows, and theme parks have been a staple of my childhood. Most of the movies I watch in theaters these days—when I can safely visit the cinema!—are usually Disney, Marvel, or Star Wars. I

have a Disney World annual pass and a Disney Plus subscription. So I can’t stress enough how much I love Disney. On the other hand, Disney is still a large multinational corporation. Its main priority is making a profit—often over people! In our current era of late-stage capitalism, there’s no denying the company has been acting like a stereotypical corporation, with its executives sitting there in their corporation buildings, acting all corporation-y, and making money. (Thank you, Trey Parker and Matt Stone!) So my relationship with the Disney Company has become

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

schizophrenic. I love the media it produces, but I hate its underhanded corporate practices. I’m a Disney fan with a split personality, like Gollum arguing with Smeagol about how much we loves it—no, no, we hates it! I love its animated movies. Many of them are my childhood favorites. Some of them I even watched in theaters like Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin, and Lion King. I hate how the company has lobbied to muck-up copyright law to prevent its older movies and characters like Mickey Mouse from falling into the public domain. I love how it made the Marvel movies into a blockbuster juggernaut. And while I don’t like everything they’ve done with Star Wars, I at least find most of their films entertaining. I hate how the company has blacklisted newspapers like the L.A. Times for criticizing its more egregious corporate practices, and how it’s forced theaters to meet unreasonable demands to squeeze a bigger profit from films like The Last Jedi. I love Disney World. I have fond memories of visiting it as a child, and my folks and I are proud annu-

al passholders to this day. I hate how poorly it treats its theme park employees. Many of them can’t afford basic living expenses. I love the songs in their movies, how many of them from “HeighHo!” to “Let It Go!” are all delightful earworms that remain stuck in your head until your dying breath. (Or maybe that’s a bad thing?) I hate how stingy they’ve been with copyright, from trying to trademark a traditional Swahili saying like “Hakuna Matata” to fining a school for screening Lion King. Again, I can’t reiterate enough how much I love Disney. I recently visited Disney World during a pandemic. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is. But it’s only because I love Disney so much that the bad things they do disappoint me so much. Sadly, there’s not much I can do. Even if I had the heart to boycott them, my refusal to buy a movie or park ticket would hardly dent the billions they make annually. Disney’s too big to fail! So might as well strap on my Mouse Ears, admit there’s no ethical consumption under capitalism, and sing “Zip-ADee-Doo-Dah!”
