The temperature feels like it’s rising past 100, it’s getting hot enough to cook a complete breakfast on the sidewalk, and climate change isn’t making things cooler. What better way to beat the heat than to get wet? Fortunately, with countless lakes, pools, and splash pads, Polk County has plenty of ways to get cooler when the heat gets too hot to handle. Here are seven ways to keep cool during the remaining “Dog Days of Summer” here in Polk County.

Swimming Pools

Of course, the quintessential summertime activity is to get cool in the pool. For a small entry fee, you can take a dip, swim a few laps, and even take a leap off the high dive. Many pools even offer multi-day or seasonal passes. Some even offer swimming lessons for first-time swimmers.

Both Gandy Pool and Simpson Park Pool in Lakeland offer $4 entry fees and $40 20-visit passes. Rowdy Gaines Pool and the Winter Haven Recreational & Cultural Center Pool are $2 for residents, $3 for non-residents, and offer multi-visit passes. The Mulberry Community Pool offers free pool passes all summer long for city residents with either a water bill, driver’s license, or ID.

Several community pools offer memberships so you can pay once and enjoy pool access all summer or year long. These pools include Lakeland Family YMCA on Cleveland Heights Blvd., Fontaine Gills Family YMCA in North Lakeland, YMCA Lake Wales, Eaglebrooke in Lakeland, Grasslands in Lakeland, and the Lakeland Country Club.

For more information about operating hours and admission, visit the city websites for the respective pools.

Splash Pads Water Parks

Sometimes you want to get wet without getting completely submerged. When you want to cool off without going to the pool, Winter Haven and Lakeland have splash pads where kids and kids at heart can get wet and splash around.

Both Barnett Park in Lakeland and Winter Haven’s Chain of Lakes Trailhead Park have splash pads with waterspouts, sprinklers, and even dump buckets providing optimal opportunities to get soaked and soak off. Both splash pads are conveniently located near playgrounds, restrooms, and picnic pavilions, providing for a fun family day at the park.

Both splash pads are free and open to the public. Barnett Park’s pad is open daily from 10 AM – 5 PM (closed Wednesdays for maintenance), and Trailhead Park’s is open daily from 10 AM – 7 PM.

Sometimes, you want to do more than float around in a pool. Sometimes, you want some thrills to go with your chills. Fortunately, LEGOLAND Resort Florida has not one, but two, water parks great for children young and old.

At LEGOLAND Water Park, you can catch gnarly waves at the wave pool, take a lazy rise down the lazy river, slip ‘n slide down 14 different slides, splash, and frolic around on the Joker Soaker play area, and even build your own LEGO boat and race them down a raging river at Creative Cove.

For smaller splashers and swimmers, they can have an oink-tastic time at the Muddy Puddles Splash Pad at Peppa Pig Theme Park. Don’t worry, though. Unlike the muddy puddles in the Peppa Pig cartoon, these puddles are nice and squeaky clean. Plus, there are plenty of water spouts and slides perfect for little kids and their families.

For more information about admission and operating hours, visit the LEGOLAND Florida Resort website at: http://www. legoland.com/florida

Lake Eva Water Park and Aquatic Center Balmoral Resort Pool

What could be better than taking a dip in a pool, getting soaked on a splash pad, or slipping and sliding at a water park? How about being able to do all three? You can in Haines City!

Lake Eva Water Park and Aquatic Center in Haines City combines the best of all three worlds with a swimming pool, splash pad, and water play area with water slides. Whether you want to slip down a water slide, splash around in the kid's play area, get soaked on the splash pad, or simply take a dip or dive in the pool, the Lake Eva Water Park has a little something for everyone all summer long.

Lake Eva Water Park is open daily until Aug. 8 and weekends until Sept. 5 from noon to 6 PM. Admission is $5 for guests 3 and older (and free for ages 2 and under). For more information, visit the pool webpage on the City of Haines City website.

Most resorts only have a pool. Balmoral Resort Florida in Haines City has a lakeside pool and much more. Little kids can splash around the children’s splash playground with water soakers, fountains, sprinklers, and dunk bucket, while the older kids can slip down two tall and twisty water slides. Meanwhile, mom and dad can sit back and relax in one of the poolside cabanas.

Best of all, you don’t need to be a resort guest to enjoy the Balmoral Resort Pool. That’s right. The pool is open to the public, whether they’re a guest or not. Whether you want to stay the entire day or only drop by for an afternoon, passes are available to allow you to enjoy the pool, water park, and all its amenities.

The Balmoral Bar and Grill often hosts various events throughout the week, from Karaoke to Trivia Night to Poolside Luaus. For a real tropical fun time, drop by for the Hawaiian Foam Party on August 6 from noon to 6 PM. (Admission is $35 for adults and $30 for children.)

Day passes are $20 for adults and $15 for children. Afternoon passes are $15 for adults and $13 for children. Infants get in free. The pool area is open from 11 AM to dusk. For more information, visit the Balmoral Resort Florida website: https://www.balmoralresort.com/

Some Random Notes About Virginia

As I write this column, I’ve returned home from a two-week trip to visit my folks up in Virginia. I was born and raised in that state, and I had lived there for 17 years before moving down here to Florida.

The last time I visited was before the start of the pandemic in 2020. So, it’s been three years. Having not stepped foot in that state for that long, I’ve forgotten how different it is from Florida.

Granted, Virginia is not fundamentally different from Florida. It wasn’t like I was visiting another country. In the end, we all still speak English, drive on the right side of the road, and have Joe Biden as our president—and with both states being red, most folks wish he wasn’t!

Still, having lived in Florida for quite some time, I’ve come to notice several differences between the Old Dominion State and the Sunshine State. Here are just a few random notes:

1. GEOGRAPHY: Which European city is home to the Prado Museum?

2. MOVIES: What is Forrest’s hometown in the movie “Forrest Gump”?

3. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What is the only vowel that isn’t on the top row of letters on a keyboard?

4. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What breed of dog is the TV star Lassie?

5. CHEMISTRY: What is a common name for nitrous oxide?

6. MUSIC: Which musical instrument does the singer Lizzo play?

7. LITERATURE: What is a bildungsroman?

8. U.S. STATES: Which two states share the most borders with other states?

9. TELEVISION: What decade is represented in the TV sitcom “The Goldbergs”?

10. FOOD & DRINK: In which century was coffee introduced to Europe?

eight -border

1. It’s Not The Humidity, It’s The Heat. Being located in the South, both Virginia and Florida get real hot during the summer. However, even though they might differ by a few degrees, the real difference between the two is the humidity.

Here in Florida, we have a saying: it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity. Being located on a peninsula surrounded three ways by water certainly does that. Even if the weather isn’t particularly hot, the humidity will make the heat feel all the more stifling.

Virginia, on the other hand, has more of a dry heat. If being outside in Florida on a hot summer day is like stepping out of a steamy hot shower, then being outside in Virginia is like stepping into an air fryer. It draws all the moisture out of you until you become a raisin.

2. Florida Is Flat. If you’ve never been to Virginia before, its landscape has these features you’ve probably never seen before. It’s called hills and mountains. It makes the terrain curve and rise above sea level, so roads tend to be curvy and hilly.

I’m being facetious, of course. But having lived down here in Florida for so long, I’ve noticed how flat the state is. You could drive 50 miles down the highway in either direction and still be on the same level as you were 50 miles back. It is so flat!

Virginia, meanwhile, even on the interstate, has so many hills and curves. The few times I drove, I had to learn to push my gas pedal harder because my car kept slowing down and to push my brake harder because it was speeding up. Turns out your car does that when you drive up and downhill. I guess I’ve become so accustomed to the road being consistently flat and level.

3. They sell Sun Drop! Never heard of Sun Drop? I don’t blame you if you haven’t. I’ve lived down here in Florida for nearly two decades and haven’t stepped into a store that sells it. I’m not a diehard fan of the soft drink, mind you, but as the old song goes, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.”

The first time I set foot in a Virginia gas station, I noticed the Sun Drop in the drink section. It was like meeting an old friend from high school you had a class or two with but never really knew their name.

As for how it tastes—eh, it’s like Mello Yello. Have you drunk Mello Yello before? Because that’s what Sun Drop tastes like.

ART OF HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR SAMUEL BAK ON DISPLAY AT POLK MUSEUM OF ART

Special to T&T Mag

The Polk Museum of Art is pleased to announce the opening of its latest exhibition, “Remembering Vilna: The Holocaust and the Art of Samuel Bak” on view July 29, 2023, through January 7, 2024. Featuring nearly 30 paintings in the Museum’s Dorothy Jenkins Gallery, this powerful exhibition uses Bak’s personal history as a child of the Holocaust as a jumping off point to explore universal themes of conflict, resilience, and hope, the consequences of prejudice and persecution, and the necessity of preserving historical memory for future generations.

Samuel Bak was born in 1933 in Vilna, Poland (now Vilinus, Lithuania), entering childhood in the years immediately prior to the onset of the Holocaust. His early life was marked by the trauma of Soviet and Nazi occupation of his hometown and his experiences in the Vilna Ghetto, forced labor camps, and hiding in a convent to escape discovery by Nazis. It was during his time in the Vilna Ghetto that Bak’s artistic talents began to flourish, with his artwork featured in an exhibition organized in the ghetto when he was just age nine. After Vilna’s liberation in 1944, Bak continued to develop his draftsmanship and painting skills through private art lessons and stints at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem, and the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Today the artist,

who is one of the few survivors of Vilna, lives and works in Weston, Massachusetts.

“After years of conversation and preparation, we are thrilled finally to be able to bring Bak’s moving, haunting, and hope-filled artwork to our community,” said Dr. H. Alexander Rich, executive director and chief curator of the Polk Museum of Art. “As our visitors will quickly learn, Bak is so much more than an amazing painter: he is a living emblem of the history of Vilna, the horrors of the Holocaust, and the refusal to allow a people to be erased or history to be rewritten or forgotten. His work is timelier now than ever.”

Using symbols and pictorial metaphors, Bak’s paintings reinterpret his memories of the horrors of World War II and his miraculous survival. His paintings often combine narrative or compositional quotations from Old Master painters and the Bible with his own invented visual language; one notable element in Bak’s paintings is the use of chess pieces — often seen as symbolic of the rational — decaying to represent the terror and confusion experienced by victims of war. Through his creation of surreal narratives, the paintings seen in “Remembering Vilna” serve as a cautionary tale on the ills of human nature and conflict as a whole.

“Bak’s art featured in the Polk Museum of Art exhibition challenges us to reflect on the horrors of the recent past as an effective stimulus for profound discussions of our responsibilities to others and the

whole world,” said Bernard Pucker, gallery owner and director of Pucker Gallery, with which the Museum has collaborated for the show.

“Remembering Vilna: The Holocaust and the Art of Samuel Bak” will be on view at the Polk Museum of Art, July 29, 2023, through January 7, 2024. The exhibition was organized in collaboration with Pucker Gallery in Boston, Massachusetts. For more information, visit PolkMuseumofArt.org/RememberingVilna. Additional exhibition and educational opportunities can be found at PolkMuseumofArt. org/Events.

ROCKY

• My father taught me all I know about working the grill -- even though it was his job! One tip that’s served me best is this simple beauty: Let the meat sear before you move it. Give it a chance to cook on one side well enough that it lifts away from the grill. If it’s sticking, you probably need to leave it alone! Happy grilling.

• “Kitchen stores sell grill brushes, but they can be expensive. I use a good-quality paintbrush from the hardware store for grilling only, and replace it a couple of times throughout grilling season. I find it to be a better brush, and less expensive to boot!” -- B.F. in Illinois

• Your grilled meats will be more moist and taste better if you let them rest for a few minutes after you take them off the grill. It allows the meat to redistribute the natural juices. If you are worried about temperature, just cover the meat with foil.

• “It’s best to clean a grill just after cooking, but if you weren’t able to, that’s OK. When faced with a messy grill surface, just preheat, then clean. The heat will burn off drippings and make it easier to scrub.” -- R.T. in Florida

• You should never use a cooking spray on your grill. Instead, soak a paper towel in oil and use your tongs to oil the grill surface.
