come and enjoy our Summer Pool Series,” said Nanay Pittman , Feltrim Group Chief Marketing Officer. “Balmoral Resort is a nice getaway for adults and families. Kids can enjoy our water slides, splash playground is great for little ones and adults can relax in one of our cabanas surrounding the water park or in the adjacent resort pool area.” Since 2017, Balmoral Resort Florida has offered visitors to Central Florida a home away from home during vacation. After a long day at the theme parks and other attractions in Orlando, the resort offers the comforts of home with several hundred vacation home rentals in a cozy private gated community. Over the years, Balmoral has expanded its outreach as more than a place to stay on vacation. Both its Event Center and its Sports Village offer venues to enjoy various concerts, sports games, and other high-end events. As such, it’s more than a place for tourists to stay

on vacation. It’s also a place that locals can enjoy for great food, music, sports, and overall fun—something they want to showcase through their Summer at the Pool Series. “So many people have not been to our resort, so we are encouraging people to come here and see all the things that we offer,” she said. “We are encouraging people to come and see our local venue. There is no other venue in Polk County that has what we have to offer, and so we want to make sure and spread the word and

will keep them coming back” The Balmoral Event Center has many other fun events planned, including a drag show and dinner on Aug. 27, a Stevie Nicks concert on Nov. 12, and another Girls Night Out celebration on Oct. 19. Whether you want to cool off from the summer heat at the pool or rock out to live music performed by local bands and traveling artists, Balmoral Resort Florida has a little bit of something to offer for both locals and tourists. “We are your local live entertainment venue and whether it is a dinner show, a tribute band playing, local entertainment or our Sunday Brunch, we encourage everyone to come visit us. Once they come here, they will see how special this place is and come back,” Pittman said. Balmoral Resort Florida is located at 124 Kenny Blvd., Haines City, Florida 33844. by James Coulter We all love our fine, furry friends, whether they be cats or dogs. We want other people to have the same opportunity to have their own furry friends. The Humane Society of Polk County works tirelessly to find cats and dogs a forever home with a loving family. Each year, they adopt out more than 1,400 shelter pets. Unfortunately, owning and operating the only no-kill shelter in Central Florida proves to be an expensive endeavor, which is why they host various fundraisers throughout the year to help cover their expenses. Do you love your pets? Did you receive yours from a shelter? Do you want other people to be able to adopt their own furry friend from a shelter? Final question: Do you love bowling? If you answered “yes” to each of these questions, then come on down to Cypress Lanes in Winter Haven this August for Bowl-A-Rama. Not only will you be able to support a good cause by raising proceeds for the Humane Society, but you will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets to win big prizes. For only $200, attendees can participate with teams of four to compete in two games of bowling (with shoes included) and enjoy lunch from a delicious buffet. That’s essentially $50 per person for food, shoes, and bowling! Not only can they compete for prizes by winning games, but also by meeting special criteria like highest score, most turkeys (three strikes in a row), or even “silly” rules like strikes in odd frames or gutter ball in even frames, explained Lisa Baker, Executive 10 JULY 2022

Director for Humane Society of Polk County. Don’t feel like bowling but still want to donate to their cause? Then feel free to become a sponsor of the event and donate prizes for raffles and auctions. You and your company can even have your logo displayed proudly during the event. Proceeds will go towards the general operating expenses of the Humane Society’s main facility, located along Dundee Road in Winter Haven. Since 2004, it has been the only no-kill shelter of its kind in Central Florida. The organization has remained committed to making

Polk County a no-kill community by 2025. “Veterinary supplies and services are our biggest expenses. People who help to sponsor this event are not just helping to provide for the costs of the event but also the medical needs of our animals as well,” Baker said. “People in our community love animals and enjoy spending time with their families. At this event, parents can bring the family to have fun and learn the importance of giving back to their community.” Humane Society's upcoming events include: Sal Moraco Golf Invitational held at Mountain Lake on Mon., Oct. 24, Santa Paws at Jensen’s Corner Bar on Tues., Dec. 6, and their Critter Cruise, which will be setting sail on Feb 12-19, 2023. Baker loves hosting all of their events, and she appreciates the community coming out to support them and their shelter. She especially looks forward to Bowl-A-Rama, as she loves being able to bowl for a good cause. “Now, don’t get too excited over that,” she said. “I said l like to bowl, I didn’t say I was good at it!” Bowl-A-Rama will be hosted on Sun., Aug 7 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Cypress Lanes, located at 2010 Dundee Rd, Winter Haven, FL 33884. Admission is $25 for non-blowers that want to attend the event, and $200 for a 4-person bowling team. Sponsorships are available between $250 to $1,500. For more information on this and other events, please contact Lisa Baker at the Humane Society at 863-324-5227. Or visit their website at: https://www.humanesocietyofpolkcounty.org/

STRANGE BUT TRUE

• Dragonflies can control all four of their wings independently. • The first person in the U.S. to use the “temporary insanity” defense was Daniel Sickles -- a Union general, senator and congressman -- after murdering the son of Francis Scott Key, composer of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” who was having an affair with Sickles’ wife. Sickles was acquitted. • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Super Bowl Sunday is the second-highest day of food consumption in America, second only to Thanksgiving. • Art was an official Olympic event from 1912 to 1948. Submissions had to be in the categories of architecture, literature, music, painting or sculpture, and inspired by sports. The event was removed after a report showed that almost all of the submitting contestants were professionals.

• The forward slashes in Web addresses serve no real purpose, according to Tim Berners-Lee, creator of the World Wide Web. • A 45-year-old Bosnian man named Amir Vehabovic faked his death in 2007 because he wanted to see who would attend his funeral and what they would say about him. After his mother was the only mourner to show up, he wrote dozens of angry letters to his (so-called) friends and what he thought about their relationship going forward. • During World War II, it was illegal in Britain to give cats a saucer of milk, dogs a biscuit or bread to pigeons. • The percontation point, a reversed question mark, was used at the end of a question that does not require an answer. Sadly, its use died out in the 17th century.

The Fragility of Friendship Friends are like fine china. Plenty of good ones are easy to find. But the best ones are rare, priceless, and hard to come by. Sometimes you find them after searching for the longest time. Others you may stumble upon by pure happenstance. Either way, when you find a good friend, you end up with someone truly special. Just as china dishes are better appreciated upon meticulously studying their finer details, a friend is truly valued when you consider the small things about their friendship. Maybe they watched every Marvel movie with you in theaters. Maybe they treated you to a day trip at Disney World for your birthday. Or maybe they’re someone you can spend hours with watching YouTube videos together at a fast-food joint. Either way, when you find someone with whom you share so many cherished little moments, it’s truly a friendship worth keeping. Unfortunately, like fine china, friendships are fragile. They’re easy to break if you’re not careful. Many times, we end up breaking them by accident. You break a promise. You forget an important event. You say or do the wrong thing. You both end up in an argument that becomes a fight until the ties between you are severed. Perhaps you didn’t intend for things to happen the way they did. Maybe it was a careless mistake. But now, you’ve broken something you’ve cherished for a long time, and seeing it ruined hurts you. And it hurts even more if you’ve had it for a long time. But just because something is broken, whether it’s fine china or a good friendship, that doesn’t mean it’s worth throwing away. If you have something that you’ve had for a long time, something that has brought you plenty of fond memories, well, that is not something you

casually discard. Whatever is broken can always be salvaged and mended. True, it may take some time and effort, and it won’t be the same as it was before, but if you truly value it, it’s always worth saving. Always! When someone tells you that you’ve hurt them, it’s easy to get defensive. It’s easy to say it’s not your fault or that it wasn’t a big deal. But the easy way isn’t always the right way. The right thing to do is to listen to them. Hear what they have to say, understand why what you said or did hurt them, and do your best to mitigate the situation and apologize. Own up to your mistakes, even if you feel or assume you did nothing wrong. And if a good friend hurts you, try your best to hear them out. It’s easy to shut them out, to cut ties with them, to give them the silent treatment, to stop answering their calls and texts, to unfriend them from Facebook or block them on Twitter. That’s the easy thing to do. The right thing to do is at least hear their side of the story. Often you learn they did not mean to say or do the thing that upset you, or that it was all a misunderstanding. And when they’ve apologized, if their apology is truly sincere, be sure to accept it. Sometimes friendships die on the vine. Sometimes they break under pressure. Sometimes they shatter by accident. But if you have a good friend, a best friend, someone whose friendship you’ve come to cherish, then you should do your best to fix what is broken. After all, even broken things are still valuable and worth salvaging. You never throw them away! AGELESS BEAUTY OF BRONZE Rodin’s Sculptures at Polk Museum of Art Special to T&T Magazine This summer, the Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College presents “Rodin: Contemplation and Dreams / Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections” on view June 25 through October 30, 2022, in the Museum’s Dorothy Jenkins Gallery, Gallery II, and Perkins Gallery. Featuring more than 40 works by the renowned and celebrated French sculptor Auguste Rodin, this exhibition brings one of art history’s most famous and influential French masters to Central Florida. Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) revived for the modern world a new appreciation for the ageless beauty of bronze sculpture, mastering and modernizing a technique long associated with ancient Greek art. Rodin, like many modern artists of the time, believed that art should be true to nature, rather than idealized like much of the art and sculpture that came before. As a result, Rodin created sculptures that captured human movement, emotion, and drama. This 20 JULY 2022

exhibition introduces viewers to some of Rodin’s most famous works and projects, including “Saint John the Baptist Preaching,” “The Gates of Hell,” and “Three Faunesses.” “Rodin is one of the most iconic artists in the history of art, modern or otherwise, with sculptures and a sculptural style that are instantly recognizable,” explains Dr. H. Alexander Rich, executive director and chief curator. “Rodin’s deft ability to mold out of metal relatable human emotion and drama promises to speak across generations to visitors of all ages and backgrounds. Truly, in addition to the beauty of their craftsmanship, Rodin’s figures succeed in making us feel, too. We cannot wait to share Rodin’s mastery with our community in this incredible exhibition, the scope of which exceeds any sculptural show we have presented before.” “Rodin: Contemplation and Dreams / Selections from the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Collections” will be on view at the Polk Museum of

Art June 25 through October 30, 2022. This exhibition is the largest installation of sculptures in the Museum’s history, and gallery visitors will learn about the incredible talent of Rodin, his life-long pursuit of art, his sometimes controversial career, and his monumental contributions and influence on modern sculpture. Rodin: Contemplation and Dreams has been organized and made possible by the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Foundation and is sponsored by Florida Southern College, Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation, Votum Foundation, Culture Builds Florida, LKLD Mayor’s Council for the Arts, and Visit Central Florida. For more information, visit PolkMuseumofArt.org/ Rodin. Additional exhibition programming and educational opportunities can be found at PolkMuseumofArt.org/Events. ABOUT AUGUSTE RODIN: Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) began his career in the early 1860s, although his love of the arts began much earlier in life. As a young child, Rodin often visited museums to draw and ad-

mire Greek and Roman sculptures, giving him an appreciation for the history, myths, stories depicted in the works, and timeless methods employed by ancient sculptures. During this same time, new movements and ideas were taking hold of the art world, including Realism and Impressionism. Immersed in the cultural shift towards more humanistic themes, Rodin approached the ancient technique of bronze sculpture through a modern lens. The result is sculptures that depict an astonishingly naturalistic sensibility, capturing human emotion and effortless movement. Although Rodin would go on to be celebrated as the greatest sculptor of the 19th century, his career was not without challenges. His new approach to sculpture was rejected by galleries and the Salon, both of which still sought out more traditional, idealized works. Nonetheless, Rodin would persist, creating iconic works including his masterwork “The Gates of Hell,” as well as “Mask of the Man with the Broken Nose,” and “The Three Shades.” By the turnof-the-20th-century, Rodin had altered the way traditional sculpture was perceived, setting the
