The Garden: The Saga Continues My little gardening project has definitely seen its ups and downs. It already feels like my first crop has been growing, thriving, or not – for a very long time, but in a calendar’s life, it’s actually only been 80 days. It’s been an 80-day roller coaster of emotions for me: anticipation, joy, concern, confusion, fear, distress, pride and anger, a lot of anger, then deflation. At the 60-day mark, I was still feeling “pride”. My garden looked beautiful; the best dwarf kale in the world! The best garden beans in the world! The best zucchini in the world! Hmmm, that sure was short lived. About 5 days later, it all went to “hell in a hand basket”. First the spots started on my beautiful elephant ear-like zucchini leaves, and then my dwarf kale started looking a little sickly. Quick to the Internet researching the problems. Looking for eco-friendly and organic solutions: Recipe/Solution from some old granny, great aunt twice removed: Flour, Baking Soda and Dish Soap sprayed on top of the leaves early in the morning after the dew hits. Say what? From the Farmer’s Almanac: Corn Meal scattered across the leaves early in the morning after the dew hits. Really? Question: what time is that exactly, “after the dew hits”? And, are these ye olden solutions really from the same person just using whatever they have on-hand from the kitchen? But, whatever, I’m the novice so I’ll try – both concoctions. This is what I got: one day my garden was covered in a white mess then it was covered in a grainy yellow mess. It’s now off to Lowe’s three times this week for supplies – there’s a crisis in the garden and I must solve it! What happened you might ask? Well, first there was the problem of the dusty mold on the leaves but mostly IT WAS THE FRICKING BUGS! More exactly…the !@#!@#! Cabbage Worm. (Dramatic pause and cue evil music) I wondered why I had extra wasps flying around. ‘Cause they search out and eat the worms. They are also pollinators. We LOVE the wasps. More please… Here is the cycle: happy white

butterfly or moths enjoy your garden by laying eggs on the underside of the leaves, the eggs hatch in 4-8 days (depending on the heat), then the worms eat their way around the garden for the next 7-15 days until time for them to become a butterfly or moth. I hate them, I them all! So this little cycle was happening in my garden right under my nose. At this point the organic “washes” and sprays at not enough. Those little demon Cabbage Worms ate their way from my kale across the garden to my zucchini. It’s such a panicking feeling that you can’t stop this from happening unless you get ahead of it. Then it makes you sad to see the devastation they created – my green garden looked like a yellow, brown mess in a matter of days. My dad on the subject: “Sugar, that’s my I don’t plant gardens in the summer. I’m usually done by April. You have to fight too much with the bugs.” And then it’s, “You’ll learn”… Well, I’ve now ripped the kale out and cut back and pulled out most of the zucchini. Those worms enjoyed more of my fruit than I did. Here is my report card from my first gardening experience: B- While I am proud that I got vegetables to grow and I got to enjoy (most of) them. My spinach was a bust, my kale ended too soon, zucchini tasted great (the 6 I got before the worms took over), my peppers are really far behind, my Brussels sprouts are only half way and fading fast, my carrots look great but didn’t grow as long as they should have, and the scallions also taste great. However, my biggest success was the garden beans. My favorite veggie and produced great. Some say I should be proud that anything grew. Now, I’ve got “the bug” and want more! This is what I’ve learned, nothing is going to be perfect in the garden, it’s always a work in progress, it’s always a learning process and you can always do something better. Most importantly, the garden is a living community and I’m the sheriff that must protect it each and every day. ou’ve got to get out and you have 60 minutes to do it. You might be locked inside an asylum or trapped in a speak easy - whatever the task the adrenaline is pumping and the urgency to escape quickly rises. Escape Rooms are becoming more popular in the United States and a family in Lakeland recently opened one downtown. Lakeland’s has three rooms to choose from – the Asylum, the Speakeasy and the Cinema. After being locked in the room, it’s time to search for clues. Those clues will eventually help you escape. Lakeland Escape Room’s most popular and most difficult room is the Asylum, says owner Ana Gillespie. And it only has a 29 percent success rate. “It’s set in the 1940s and has an eerie element of fear,” she says. There are two Speakeasy rooms which features a true story about an Ybor City gangster. The Cinema is the most family-friendly with a story

based in Hollywood. The rooms are changed out about every three months. During the challenge, you are awarded three free clues, but everyone has to agree to use them. Brittney Varney recently escaped from the Speakeasy room with 8 minutes to spare. “I’ve always liked those criminal-esque games and puzzles, so putting the two together was awesome.” “I wanted to do the Asylum,” says the 23-year-old Auburndale resident. “I like scary things and want to go back. Polk County needs more entertainment.” Gillespie says they nearly sell out every weekend. Up to eight people

are allowed in a room and everyone participates. “There’s a sense of accomplishment,” she says. “It’s a challenge and there’s an instant reward of figuring something out. It’s a game, but everyone is integrated and immersed in it.” Escape Rooms started in the mid2000s in Japan and Europe and then gained momentum in the states in 2013, according to www.roomescapeartist.com. Right now, China leads with the most Escape Rooms. As for Central Florida, Orlando and Tampa have several Escape Rooms and Gillespie wanted to bring them to Polk County. “It’s been fun to bring to Lakeland,” she says. “It’s

scary and risky because of some lack of knowledge. We had to take a leap of faith.” She writes the stories and designs the puzzles while her husband builds the rooms. Gillespie recently announced that now the Escape Room experience can come to you. The Mobile Escape Room can be used for birthday parties, corporate events and celebrations. “There are no limits to where we can go with Mobile Escape Rooms,” she says. At the brick and mortar location, Saturdays are the busiest for the Gillespies with birthday parties and those spending time downtown. Lakeland Escape Room is open evenings Wednesday through Friday and most of the day Saturday and Sunday, but corporations are using the facility during the weekdays for team building activities. The experience is $25 per person. So get your thinking caps on, solve some puzzles and work as a team so you can escape. “You have to be quick-thinking and on your game,” says Gillespie. BACKSTAGE PASS

When the Hometown Band is a Class Act It was a Friday night and I didn’t want to cook. Come to think of it, that happens a lot on a Friday night. But I digress. Anyway, we went to Fire (I had gator bites and wings on my mind). What we got was far more than a drink and a wing, though – we were treated to a first class concert. Because B. Haven was there. Moreover, I recently went to a wedding reception. The venue was fabulous; the food extraordinary; and the music made some of the most reserved, businesslike attendees boogie to the likes of Sweet Home Alabama. Because B. Haven was there.

THE HISTORY

THE HOMETOWN BAND Even if you haven’t lived in Polk County very long, you’ve probably heard of B.Haven, given their extensive gig list. Restaurants, bars, weddings, events – they’re there. That’s saying a lot in Winter Haven, too: Remember, 18 JUNE 2017

it’s the city that birthed Jim Stafford and Gram Parsons: Residents expect a lot from their musicians. B. Haven respects that heritage, and lives up to the praise. In 2016, they were voted Best Local Band in The Ledger’s 2016 “Best of the Best” People’s Choice Awards. For one thing, I think they can sing anything, and their song list seems to prove that, listing songs from Meghan Trainor to the Rolling Stones to The Eagles and James Brown and Jimmy Buffett. But who is this group of folks looking cool behind the mikes, and how did they get together? I recently threw a bunch of questions at them, in hopes of getting to know them a little better.

“Duke and I go way back,” began Glen Carlton, who plays bass for the group. The two began working together in Brassworks in late 1982, which was active until 2008. “That’s when Glen and I began working with Band Haven, which eventually transitioned to B.Haven in 2015,”

Burr continued. Toney and McNair were also in Band Haven, but when that band ended in 2015, the foursome was short a lead singer. “We re-grouped with Tavi as B.Haven,” Carlton continued. Tavi Fontana had been a regular around the group’s gigs, and they already knew she had a voice. “Duke and Glen asked me to sub in on two previously booked gigs,” she remembered, “and the chemistry between the band members and the music meshed amazingly.” Carlton agreed. “Everything just clicked after that. She has a great voice and is a real pleasure to work with. The chemistry and musicianship on stage is what makes this band so much fun, and having both female and male vocals in the band has opened up a wide variety of music that we can play.”

Duke Burr: Guitar/Vocals “Music has been an awesome source of happiness in my life,” said Burr, and the happiness is obvious. When you speak to him on the phone, he sounds like a man who just won the lottery. In reality, he’s a man who – as you are speaking to him – is probably running a batch of postcards or brochures: Continuing a family tradition, Burr owns Burr Printing, which opened in 1930. But don’t let the whir of the printers fool you: Burr is nothing less than a local music celebrity, having toured with Reba McEntire before coming back to his hometown, Winter Haven. If you haven’t heard B.Haven, you may have heard him play in the popular duo, Coastal Acoustic Barefoot Music, where he teams up with T. Michael Stavres to play “tropical” favorites.

He and his wife, Teresa, have four children: son Derrick, daughter Velvet, twin sons Drake and Dru, plus two grandchildren – granddaughter Sydney and grandson Waylon. Glen Carlton: Bass/Vocals If you have ever had a child who participated in a school band or orchestra – anywhere in Polk County – then you know of Glen Carlton and his company, Carlton Music Center, which has locations in both Winter Haven and Lakeland. Because you’re probably rented an instrument from him. Like Burr, Carlton is continuing a family tradition. 50 years ago, his parents opened Carlton Music Center in Winter Haven and then opened its second location in Lakeland in 1980. He and his wife oversee both locations, and their daughter Julie is currently the company’s Web Developer, a position that will continue, ensuring that the store stays in the family for generations to come. Carlton has played instruments since he was young and when he attended Florida State University, he played in the FSU Marching Chiefs. His favorite instruments – he has played many over the years – are trombone and bass guitar. In addition to the store and B.Haven, Carlton also plays in the Over 55 Band, which performs the “oldies” at Polk State College.

“On weekends when I’m not playing, I also love to go out and listen to other bands. There are so many good musicians right here in Polk County!” Tavi Fontana: Vocals When Tavi isn’t performing with B.Haven, it’s very likely she’s thinking about airplanes. The Winter Haven resident, the youngest of seven, moved to Polk County when she was very young, and has been employed with the City of Winter Haven for over four years. Now the Contract and Service Manager at the Winter Haven Municipal Airport, she hopes to continue and expand her career within the aviation field. Fontana is married to her biggest fan, Robby Brady. “He is my rock, my biggest supporter, and my best friend. You’ll see him at all the gigs taking photos,” she said with a smile. Jeff Toney: Keyboards/Vocals Jeff Toney has his hands full, and it’s not just with the keyboards. A single dad raising his 14 year-old grandson, he is a Purchasing Agent at International Ship Repair and Marine Services, and plays keyboards for two local bands, including B.Haven. When asked how he started with B. Haven, he explained, “I was asked to play a show by one of our past drummers, about 8 years ago, and I have been here ever

since.” Originally from Saint Albans, West Virginia, Toney has one daughter, one son and four grandsons, and loves football season: “Skol Minnesota Vikings and Hail WVU!,” he said. Josh McNair: Drum/Vocals When they were looking for a drummer, they didn’t have to look very far. McNair is the Winter Haven Store Manager and Buyer at Carlton Music Center. “I work with the band’s former drummer,” he remembered. “And he wanted to take a break. I slid in and told him, ‘If you ever want me to sub for you, I’d be more than happy to!’ Glen and Duke were both enthralled by my ‘slapping of the drum skins’ and decided to keep me.” Born in Orlando but raised in Lakeland, McNair considers himself a “good ol’ Polk County boy.” Currently single, McNair is engaged to Ariel Courson. “I’m a bit of nerd,” he said with a laugh. “My fiancée and I love some video gaming when I’m not working on music.” The Next Gig As of press time, the next time you can check the band out is June 25th at the Idle Zone - 615 7th Street SW, in Winter Haven. THE FUN QUESTIONS When and what was it that made you realize you wanted to be a musician? Duke: Ever since I can remember, it seems I’ve always had music flowing through my brain. I started out singing in the choir at church, then in high school I sang with a group. Later, while working with the ski show at Disney World in 1972, I decided to learn to play the harmonica, taking up the guitar in 1974. Glen: Music has always been in our family, but I was also very fortunate to have been a part of some very good school

music programs early on that inspired me to keep playing. Jeff: My older brother played guitar and he turned me onto Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, etc. Listening to all the great musical influences from classical composers to rock and jazz. Josh: When I was in middle school, I wanted to be like my rock icons, Kurt Cobain, Dexter Holland, Billie Joe Armstrong and Chris Cornell. But I couldn’t play guitar in school. So I joined the school band to play drums and decided that I wanted to

Josh: My grandmother bought me a full set of used drums. I still have one of the tom-toms.

And yes, I still have it! Jeff: It was an electric piano/clavinet. I don’t have it today, but I do still have my first

Who are you’re primary influences in your music? Duke: My earliest memories are of listening to The Ventures, then the Beatles. Later on, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin…basically all the classic rock groups of the 70’s. When blues became popular, it was the Allman Brothers, Clap— Continued page 20

ton and Skynyrd, along with the incredible pickers of the Nashville country scene. I’m also an eternal student of the immortal jazz artists Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery. Glen: One of my former band directors, Jimmy Parker, was a big influence. Other bands that I grew up listening to… The Beatles, The Eagles, Little River Band just to name a few. And on bass I would have to say Louis Johnson, Mark King, and of course, Jaco Pastorius. Jeff: Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright, John Lord, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Sebastian Bach, etc. Josh: As a kid, I was real into 90’s grunge, punk and alternative . . . bands like Nirvana, Green day, Alice in Chains and The Offspring. As I got older, I started to get into heavier music with bands like Between the Buried and Me, The Devil Wears Prada, Mastodon and Sleeper. What CD or playlist is in your car or your iPod? Tavi: Basically, everything except techno and scream metal. I love Etta James, but if I’m running, I need a little Motley Crue to get me through. Duke: I tend to listen to whatever song/guitar part I’m trying to learn at the

Lewis Dear Hollywood, There were two thoughts that kept repeating as I watched your recent reboot of the 1980’s romantic classic “Dirty Dancing.” First, the thunder overhead must have been Patrick Swayze rolling over in his grave and the second was how did this project ever get “green lighted?” Does money simply flow through the streets of L.A. in such abundance that any idea, no matter how poorly executed, is allowed to come to fruition? At what point does a production team step back and say, this is a terrible idea? I can overlook the simple fact that the television special was created to generate advertising revenue during what is typically a slow sales cycle. I get it, making money is the ultimate goal of broadcasting; however, at some point there has to be a platform for truly original ideas. Taking a hotshot millennial cast, tossing in a few politically correct storyline twists and re-boxing the whole disaster, as a “musical television event” is not the way to connect with fans or introduce a whole new generation to movie magic. I understand “Dirty Dancing” is not Shakespeare and the original was not an Oscar award-winning cinema breakthrough…but in the end,

Aside from the poor casting, abysmal dance routines and the overall ridiculous additions to the storyline, this remake fell short of what makes a great chick flic…the ability to show that romance can be found around every corner and a little bit of Johnny and Baby can be found in all of us. This television turkey failed to inspire one minute of romantic thought and whoever thought it was okay to skimp on the dancing choreography missed the entire charm of the original movie. Who should be completely irate is Cynthia Rhodes whose incredible moves from the 1987 classic are probably responsible for the entire fan base of “Dancing with the Stars.” Nicole Scherzinger tries her best to bring “Penny” to the forefront but fell short. With all of the talented dancers trying to make their big break, Abigail Breslin appeared so bored she didn’t even try to point her toes. To end my rant, Hollywood we are looking at you and expect better. And if you are thinking about a “Ferris Beuller’s Day Off” remake…back away from the screenplay. Food. The breaking of bread, the sharing of a meal; something that we all have in common. We hope you step out of your comfort zone to experience the hint of other cultures through your taste buds and not necessarily your eyes. There are a 21.2% of other wonderful cultures that make up our county so we hope you embrace what they have to offer to spice up our cooking “pot”.

Many serve up a mash up between “homestyle” cooking of American and Greek fare – the comfort foods. The Greeks are very passionate life-loving people and that always comes across in their food. We set out to find one that was only serving Greek favorites and we came across the new Little Greek Fresh Grill, which opened in December of 2016. While it offers a scaled down version of the many wonderful classic Greek dishes, we really enjoyed this café style establishment with its simple tasty almost “fast-food” style menu or should we say good food - fast. The décor is simple not kitschy with hints of blue, a modern and industrial mix with traditional images of Greece displayed on the wall. While waiting for lunch, I ran into a classmate that I haven’t seen in years. He and his father are successful business leaders, located in Lakeland, in the real estate, development and construction industry. He stated how much he enjoyed the grill’s fresh food and frequents a lot living around the corner. What a great 2-4-1, catching up quickly with an old classmate and getting a rave review at the same time! One item on the menu I especially appreciated was the create-yourown Greek salad. All of the traditional ingredients are available, but you get to choose your version to enjoy. As an appetizer, we started with the Dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with beef and rice) served with a lemon sauce that is simply drinkable. These were some of the best dolmades that I have ever eaten. Next, we tried the Steak Souvlaki (skewers) served over rice, which comes with a Greek salad, pita bread and that heavenly tzatziki sauce (basically a yogurt cucumber dipping sauce). They also serve chicken, lamb and salmon souvlaki. Then, it was on to the Spanakopita (spinach pie) – so delicate and yummy. Layers of flaky pastry stuffed with spinach and feta cheese also served with a Greek salad. We ended our lunch with a Baklava Cheesecake. It was an incredible combo of a traditional Greek pastry and smooth creamy cheesecake – two thumbs up! My hopes for this brand would be that they branched out to offer a “special of the day” that would showcase some of the other great traditional Greek dishes that I know their clientele would also enjoy such as Moussaka (casserole dish) and Pastitsio; one of my favorites which I equate to a Greek-style lasagna. To get an even better appreciation for Greece, stateside, you have two options: 3-day Greek Festival held in February at St. Sophie’s Greek Orthodox Church in Winter Haven or take a day trip to Tarpon Springs (the sponge docks) in Pinellas County, our friends to the west. People from the United Kingdom make up a large part of the tourists that enjoy the sunshine state. Many Brits call us, Polk County, their second home. This is especially evident with all of the thousands of vacation homes and short-term rentals that have popped up over the past 10 years in the Highway 27/Haines City to Four Corners area. There have been a few English/Irish inspired restaurants and pubs that have opened and closed over the years to our disappointment. However, we heard about The Fish And Chip Shop and had to make the little trek over to Champions Gate to try it out. We were not dissatisfied. Great portions. The café has clean contemporary décor with fun British-inspired knick-knacks on the wall. And, all of the English favorites on the menu! We approached the counter to scan the menu on the wall. Great food variety from the cod and haddock to scotch eggs, pork sausages and, of course, those savory little pies! The pies are individual servings, which are handmade British classics like Steak, Ale & Mushroom, Chicken & Leek and Cottage Pie. Food is handmade and inspired by British Classics. Though it was hard to decide, we chose the classic Fish & Chips to share. The large portion of Haddock was just that – very large! It’s a good thing all of our food was to share. Don’t forget to sprinkle a little malt vinegar and a squeeze of fresh lemon before digging in. So good! Crisp beer batter outside and tender white fish on the inside. Next was the Sausage Roll. A traditional sausage wrapped in a pastry and then pressed. It was a tasty treat! It reminded me of the British Bangers and Mash, sausage and mashed potatoes, that I love so much. One dish that I could not wait to dig into was the Cottage Pie, instead of the usual piecrust; it was topped with a nice serving of mashed potatoes mindfully piped on top. I really like the individual pie servings they bake. The Cottage Pie came with a side of what they call Brown Gravy. We had it with the “chips”, we had it with the sausage roll and we had it with the cottage pie. In other words, it was really good. Like, lick your plate good! The food was very filling, so we couldn’t have the dessert. That’s the only thing I regretted, was not trying the traditional Victoria’s Sponge (cake). It ‘s a layered sponge cake with a strawberry jam center topped with powered sugar. But, this definitely gives me an excuse to go back and sample a few more classic dishes, this time saving room for the dessert! 24 JUNE 2017

to AUG 26 - Roberto Estopiñán Exhibit. Born in Cuba in 1921, sculptor, draftsman, and printmaker Roberto Estopiñán is a celebrated artist and considered a pioneer of modern sculpture in Latin American art. During the 1960s, he featured haunting faces and strained forms filled with despair, conveying his preoccupation with, and compassion for, those who have experienced injustice. These artworks in many ways run counter to his later works that focus more on beauty and the exploration of form. Perhaps the most prevalent subject in Estopiñán’s work is the female torso. Beginning in the late 1970s, these abstracted torsos in his work are reminiscent of the elongated, often swollen forms of European sculptors, but include familiar textures of the artist’s earlier work. These bone-like, somewhat surreal shapes not only capture the beauty of the torso, but also hint at Estopiñán’s struggle to balance texture with the softness of the female form. When you enter through the doors at Café Roti, you instantly know that you are in for a treat. It’s golden with hues that envelop you from every angle. It’s grandiose with larger than life majestically framed artwork almost museum-like. Yet it’s soothing with the instrumental Indian tunes that hum in the background. However, when you pull into the parking lot, I must remind you to “not judge a book by its cover”. The restaurant is nestled on a side street of an older area of north Lakeland – directly across from the Lakeland Regional Hospital. It has been open since 2003. The location is a bit puzzling until you realize that the owner, Dr. Saqib Khan, also owned and operated a pain clinic within steps from the restaurant. Medicine is his profession however his Indian- Pakistani restaurant is his passion. This is very apparent when speaking to him on the phone and also having the opportunity to share a meal with him. The business philosophy is “Where every day is festive and every meal a feast”. This is what we shared with Dr. Khan, a feast for the eyes, for the nose and for the mouth. Café Roti is such a wonderful gourmet food experience, even their water is special – 5 times filtered for the purest taste. There are, however, people that still confuse Indian food with being a spicy cuisine. It’s simply not true; it’s created with an array of vibrant full flavored traditional spices. Some spices are mild, some spices are hot. The very attentive staff will ask how you prefer your food: Mild, Medium, Hot – or Indian hot. We chose the medium but on our next visit may venture into a little more heat. For lunch we enjoyed many different foods paired with the perfect wine from their sommelier, Phillip. We started with the Samosa; pastry with spiced potatoes and peas. Then on to a customer favorite the Chicken Sheek Kabab; ground chicken grilled. The classic Tandoori Chicken was paired with the fragrant Basmati Rice. And, I really enjoyed the Shrimp with Korma Sauce; a light sweetened creamy sauce with nuts and raisins. From their dinner menu, Dr. Khan chose two dishes from the “Doctor’s Choice” section – the Ground Beef and the Fish. These are specialty dishes that are prepared the healthiest, but are packed full of flavor using the freshest of ingredients: garlic, onion, tomatoes, ginger, ginger, cilantro and green peppers. We did finish our meal with the Kheer, which is the Indian-style rice pudding. So delicious I could have eaten several servings. Café Roti will take you on a magic food journey with Chef Reggi guiding the way from his kitchen. Creating the perfect Indian-Pakistani dishes that excite the palate with the chef’s passion along with the best ingredients put into each and every one served. Soon more people will have the opportunity to enjoy Café Roti – Dr. Khan is relocating the restaurant to Downtown Lakeland. Ramona Deli is a Latin American restaurant specializing in the flavors of the Dominican Republic. The Hispanic or Latino population makes up 17.7% of our county’s demographics. As we explore our international cuisine series, we will introduce you to several different Latin countries and their flavor profiles. Where there are similarities in the types of food utilized in these areas, the seasonings along with ingredients and the cooking techniques makes them regionally unique. Formerly a Spanish Colony, the Dominican Republic still has a Spanish influence in the island along with African and Taíno dishes. Most meals are served with rice and traditionally red beans. Ramona Deli has only been open for 7 months and it has been on our radar to try for the last four. A sous-chef at one of the top restaurants in the county has been singing Ramona’s praises to us about their authenticity, flavors and value. With his stamp of approval, we knew the food had to be good. This no-frills deli has tummy pleasing stick-toyour-ribs kind of food. Their food is displayed cafeteria style with set offerings Monday through Saturday. There’s also a menu board displaying their made-to-order sandwiches and breakfast items also available. It was a Monday when we went to eat lunch. Watch closely for the deli because it’s easy to miss tucked in a small plaza in the middle of an older more industrial area of Winter Haven. It’s quaint inside but very clean with only a few tables all covered in checkered cloths and Dominican art scattered about on the walls. They do a large to-go business so meals are served in Styrofoam containers – at least they were during lunchtime. We ordered the Baked Chicken with white rice and red beans, the Roasted Pork, which is served chopped bone-in, over the yellow rice and black beans, a side of the Macaroni Salad, one Beef Empanada, and side of Cassava with Onions. Fantastic! It was enough food for two people to make two meals out of. While we were enjoying our food, I noticed a lady stopped in to pick up to-go orders. She was trying to speak a little Spanish to the older woman behind the counter – was this the famous Ramona? I said to the lady, “Good job with the Spanish.” She said, “I’m trying. I’m hoping to communicate a little better. We order here a lot for our office and just love the food! One of my favorites is Tuesday when they have the eggplant.” What a wonderful gesture, I thought to myself. What a nice lady and another nice review. box. Another mom had her daughter out helping her to find nooks and crannies in tree roots to hide her

rocks. It is in the giving of a simple design on a simple material that makes me smile, too.

socializing and not sensationalizing. From some of the posts I see on the sight, I see that there is a Lakeland Rocks and an Auburndale Rocks. Even if you don’t go out looking for rocks, it is heartwarming to see some of the posts on the Facebook page. This is connecting people in a way that is fun and fundamental. The first time I saw one of the rocks, I put it in my pocket and held on to it and wondered who left it. It was a sweet design of a ladybug. I have since found more and as soon as this article is complete, I am going to re-hide the rocks that you see in this picture. It’s like an Easter egg hunt with no chance of melted jelly beans or salmonella. Thank you to the group that first started this. Now for the roll part of Polk County. How do you know it’s citrus harvesting season here? The answer is, when you see all the oranges that rolled off the trucks. There’s enough fallen oranges around here to cure scurvy on the Nina, Pinta and the Santa Maria! Don’t hunt for those. Not a good idea. But the rocks…they are a great idea!

You’ve found “The Sweet Spot”! Hello, my name’s Grant Starr, I’m humbled and grateful to take over the reins from Sara Michaels. Her “Porch Picks” have enlightened and entertained us over the last seven years. Without her instruction and encouragement, I wouldn’t be where I am. Let’s talk about Chris Stapleton’s new record From A Room: Volume 1. Soul,

story, songwriting, country, rhythm and blues. It’s in all nine tracks, which Chris wrote or co-wrote seven of. From a Room picks up where his first release, Traveller, left off. No surprises or new direction, he stays the course of modern traditionalist. As commercially and critically heralded as Traveller was, Stapleton still isn’t for everyone. Again, there are no overly produced smooth pop beats or drum machines on this sophomore project. To quote the late, Gram Parsons, who was born in Winter Haven and is considered the father of country rock, “I think pure country music includes rock and roll… how can you define something like that? I just say this: It’s music. Either it’s good or it’s bad; either you like it or you don’t”. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. True statement, but what gives any opinion validity is a previous body of knowledge and opinions to compare them to. For example, my favorite county artists are Eric Church, George Strait, and Sturgill Simpson. Sonically, they trip my trigger with interesting, innovative sounds. I have a pretty diverse musical pallet--from Kendrick Lamar to Lorretta Lynn. I can go from two-stepping to EDM dance party with the click of an iPod. Now, you have some basis for my taste as a broadcaster, author, and music lover. I’m excited to share my insight into the music business with you. As a North Carolina native, one of my favorite old jokes is--Who is the only person who could hold the legendary basketball player Michael Jordon to under twenty points a game? The punchline is “Dean Smith”. Dean was MJ’s college coach at the University of North Carolina.

Despite writing number one songs for everyone in town and having his own bluegrass band, it’s why it took a decade for Chris Stapleton to be given the opportunity to become the star he was meant to be. Like Jordan, Stapleton could only be held back by gatekeepers. Well, the gate is swinging wide open now. He’s an industry darling, in the forefront, a bona-fide headliner. Let’s highlight my favorite tracks. Of course, most albums should be listened to cover to cover, from beginning to end. I understand the way we listen to music has drastically changed with dwindling attention spans, but quality music is meant to be enjoyed as a whole work. Once again, he covers country gold with his take on Willie Nelson’s tearjerker ‘The Last Thing I Needed the First Thing This Morning’. ‘Without Your Love’ really jumped out to me.
