The Leopard Legacy

In Memory of Tim Leopard (1973-2021)

by James Coulter They say the most important thing in life is what you leave behind. For local business owner and philanthropist Tim “Timmers” Leopard, the late owner of the Apple Lounge in Winter Haven, his life touched countless other lives in his community. From homeless veterans to struggling teachers to families in need of a holiday dinner, through fundraisers, donations, and food distribution, Leopard helped those who could not help themselves, and his generosity only makes his absence all the more measurable. However, as much as he was willing to give of himself to others, he was not as willing to brag about his goodwill and accomplishments. Even his wife, Lindsey, whom he married shortly before he passed away last year, did not know the full scope of his outreach due to his own humility. “There was stuff he could do that I was not aware of,” she said. “He did so much for the community and never really needed acknowledgment for it. He never wanted any of the acknowledgment for it. He was one of a kind. He was an amazing person that loved me and loved people in general. He would do anything for anyone. Nothing could replace him.” THE BUSINESS MAN Timothy Alan Leopard was born to Judith and Wayne Leopard on Sep. 15, 1973 in Winter Haven. He originally worked as a bartender at Apple Lounge, previously owned by Ted Shackelford. He left to work as an insurance salesman before returning to bring the Winter Haven bar under new management in 2005. Tragedy struck the bar two years later when it was destroyed in a fire in 2007. Nevertheless, despite the heavy damage, Leopard and his staff rebuilt the bar and re-opened it seven months later near the end of the year, even re-dedicating it to the former owner. It was such a huge moment in the bar’s history which also allowed them to rebuild and upgrade as well as now honor Ted Shackelford,

its original owner - who has since passed. Tim Leopard dedicated the building with a plaque in honor of the man who created the original Apple Lounge. Leopard always owed his bar’s success to the local community. For that reason, he always insisted on giving back to the community that supported him, supporting them in turn through various local fundraisers and donations. THE HUMANITARIAN For nearly five years, one of their main charity endeavors has been an annual Christmas food distribution event. He approached Grant Piche, owner of the Catering Oasis, and head of the local non-profit organization Restaurants Against Hunger, with the idea, inspired by a Thanksgiving turkey giveaway Grant assisted

with Brook’s Law Group. Piche and Leopard often worked together for many local fundraisers and causes related to Restaurants Against Hunger. Leopard participated in the Scores Golf Tournament for nine years, volunteered for various holiday food distribution events, and assisted with the Boys and Girls Club on many occasions. He even made contributions to a small refrigerator that Piche placed outside his eatery for two years to help feed the local homeless. “Tim reach out into the community was strong,” Piche said. “It was a great honor to work with him and always a great spirited conversation...He had great humanity, and that impressed me the most.” THE PHILANTHROPIST Reva Martin knew Tim for 15 years. met him when she sold him his first house, and she had consulted him on various deals afterward. She even assisted him through a consulting firm in the marketing of Apple Lounge. They had been friends ever since. She always knew him as the person to give whatever he could to help others. “He was such a really genuine loving and caring person,” she said. “He was the type of person who would give the shirt off his back for anybody. He gave a lot back to the community and did a lot for people. He is just a giving caring loving person that people never had a bad thing to say about him...He is his own person. You know what it is for Tim. He doesn’t have anything to hide. He is always upfront and honest. He genuinely cares. That is what separates him from everybody else.” Jennifer “Cookie” Denby originally knew him as a customer before eventually working for him as a cook, often assisting with trivia nights. Now she serves as a part-owner of Apple Lounge with Lindsey Leopard and Luke Stermer. Both of them were members of Lost Pets of Polk County. She recalled a time when he met a lady whose dog was taken to the shelter and who was unable to pay to have it released. Tim later called to inform her that he had paid to have her dog released. “He didn’t even know her,” Denby said. “He was that person. He was that guy. He would have done anything for anyone just to help. He was just that guy.” THE LEGACY Leopard was diagnosed with cancer in October 2020. A few months later, in July 2021, he was diagnosed with COVID-19. He passed away a few months later due to complications to his lungs, mostly through a combination of the chemotherapy and COVID-19 infection, Denby said. The Leopard Legacy Foundation was created shortly after in his honor. As his business often contributed to the community, his friends and family wanted to continue giving back by starting the non-profit organization in his memory. “He was a giving guy,” Denby said. “When EXPECT MORE... he passed, it was the most natural thing to come up with an organization to continue giving to the community because we did not have it, we did not have the money, he had the means to do things that he did and we wanted to be able to do it by pulling together as a community. That is how we came up with the organization.” The Putt-Putt Pub Crawl is one of the many local events the foundation hosts. Apple Lounge had participated each year in the annual pub crawl, being one of the locations where attendees could attempt to hit a ball-in-one with a mini-golf course hole. The Leopard Legacy Foundation has since taken over the event from The Women’s Resource Center in Winter Haven. Tim loved the overall cause of the event, which was to give back to local homeless veterans. However, he especially loved the camaraderie. Now that he is no longer with them, his friends and family expect to continue spreading that camaraderie and charity for many years to come. “That is why we created Leopard Legacy in his honor...[so] we could continue to do the things that Tim did on a daily basis,” she said. “Our goal was to get people to do one good thing a day. If you could do one good thing a day...and to love, he was such a loving person that touched us all.” Mission: Leopard Legacy is a Local Humanitarian relief and development Nonprofit organization dedicated to helping needy children, veterans, and the homeless population to overcome hunger and poverty. About: Leopard Legacy was founded in Winter Haven, Florida, September 2021, in Loving memory of Timothy Leopard “Timmers”. Leopard Legacy will help continue the missions “Timmers” cared so much about! For more information on how to get involved with Leopard Legacy: FB@LeopardLegacy or info.leopardlegacy@gmail.com

Special to T&T Mag Puerto Rican saxophonist, classical pop recording artist, musical director, and composer Jazz Hamilton performs his latest production “CARNEVALE” at the RP Funding Center on September 30, 2022 at 7:30 pm. Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, and since the age of 3, Jazz knew he was destined to become a musician. At the age of 4 and 5, he serenaded his neighbors from the balcony of his grandmother’s 3rd floor apartment, singing the most famous songs of his favorite Salsa artist, Hector Lavoe. His introduction to Jazz was unique, with a father that was an avid collector of good music recordings, he was exposed to different genres at an early age. Then one day he found the original recording of “Body and Soul” by the great Coleman Hawkins and fell in love with the saxophone and Jazz Music forever. Known for his recordings of classical, pop, jazz, Latin jazz, contemporary

jazz and salsa genres his main instruments are alto and soprano saxophones. Consequently, Jazz Hamilton crafted a distinctive sound that emerges from a Classical backdrop but then transcends beyond the limits of any single creative expression masterfully placing his instrument at the forefront of the orchestra. Now, Jazz Hamilton presents his mystical and electrifying masquerade concert showcasing masterpieces such as: “Song from A Secret Garden,” “Libertango,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Green Hornet,” Aranjuez,” and “Besame Mucho” along with many more. All this intertwined with his original arrangements, orchestrations, and spellbinding interpretations. Come and celebrate love in a unique immersive musical experience with the organic, smooth, and warm tone of Jazz Hamilton in this dynamic and breathtaking Book of Moments that today he calls: “CARNEVALE” …

Workers of the World, Co-Op! May 1 is International Workers’ Day. In the spirit of the holiday, let us consider: what if the workers owned the means of production? Whoa! Hold on! Don’t worry! I’m not advocating for communism. I’m not insisting the state own everything and force everyone to live in grey buildings and wait in bread lines. But I am asking this question: how much freedom do you have at your job? Think about it. You don’t have much of a say in what work you do. You don’t choose when or how many hours you work. You don’t choose how much you get paid or what benefits you earn. And if you get fired,

you can’t choose to contest your termination through due process. We’re told everyone has “freedom” in America; but while most people are free to decide how our government is run, they don’t have as much of a say in how their workplace operates. Most of the decision making is done by their boss, with the CEO making the most decisions and money—often 100 times more than their workers! Does that sound like “freedom”? But what if this weren’t the case? What if the workers had an equal say in how their workplace was run? What if they could decide how many hours they worked and how much

money they made? And what if they had the decision to receive a fair share of the profits and not have most of it funneled upward to the CEO? In fact, what if there were no CEO? Sounds like a utopian fantasy? Actually, it’s called a “worker cooperative”, and it’s not quite as radical an idea as you might imagine. A worker cooperative, or co-op, is a business owned and operated by the workers. According to The Democracy at Work Institute (DAWI), a nonprofit that supports the development of such business models, 465 worker coops currently operate in America, and their numbers have continued to grow over the past 20 years. Collectively, they employ around 7,000 people and generate over $550 million in annual revenues. These coops have proven equally, if not more, productive than conventional businesses, especially during the recent COVID-19 pandemic. As DAWI reports: “Very few co-ops permanently laid off people during the pandemic, and many found creative ways to make new successful business models...because the larger number of owners in the co-op model fosters creativity and an ability to adapt.” Virginie Pérotin, an economics professor, researched and reviewed more than two decades of international

data on worker-owned cooperatives, making it one of the largest studies of its kind. His research concluded that worker co-ops survived as long as other conventional businesses, provided more stable employment, and retained a larger share of their profits. The best part? Worker co-ops are perfectly compatible with our capitalist economy. Think about it! If Amazon were to become a worker co-op, what about it would fundamentally change? It would still be a private company that made on-line deliveries. It would still operate within a market economy for other businesses and customers. And it would still make a profit. The only real difference, of course, is that the decision-making would be made by its workers democratically rather than by a CEO who makes more money per second than his employees make per week, and the profits wouldn’t go solely to him so he could launch himself into space while his workers are forced to pee into bottles. Workers of the world, co-op! You have nothing to lose but your pee bottles!
