LOCAL MEXICAN EATERIES

Azteca Mexican Restaurant D’ Oro

5860 Cypress Gardens Blvd., Winter Haven, FL 33884 www.aztecadoro.com

This Orlando-based Mexican family-run enterprise has locations in both Winter Haven and Lakeland. Regardless of which location

you visit, you’re certain to enjoy the finest Mexican cuisine with dishes prepared from fresh ingredients, as its website boasts.

“Our dedication to using traditional cooking methods and genuine Mexican flavors in every meal we offer is one of the things that distinguishes us,” its website states. “Every bite of our food is bursting with the rich and bright tastes of Mexico, from the savory tacos and burritos to the delectable enchiladas and fajitas.”

One Yelp reviewer was amazed by the long line that stretched outside the building, yet was equally and pleasantly surprised by the expedient service. Of course, the meals she and her party ordered more than exceeded expectations.

“We ordered nachos for appetizers, and it was the best nachos I ever had,” she wrote. “All ingredients tasted so fresh and that goes for all of the food that we ordered. I can tell our waitress was serving many tables, but she was very polite and came to see us, many times.”

La Fiesta Mexicana

94 Maxcy Plaza Cir., Haines City, FL 33844 www.afiestamexicana863.com

Plenty of Mexican restaurants claim to serve authentic Mexican cuisine. With its family of three owners, all of whom grew up and were raised eating authentic Mexican cooking south of Mexico, La Fiesta Mexicana is guaranteed to offer the most authentic of authentic Mexican cuisine.

“La Fiesta Mexicana is a family-owned restaurant with the goal to deliver authentic Mexican food,” its website states. “Their goal has been to serve food from scratch starting with their fresh handmade tortillas and original salsa made in-house.”

So popular have their eatery become that after 13 years it outgrew its original downtown location and “expanded to 150 seats with a full-sized bar equipped with an extended variety of tequila.”

Of course, the best testament to their food and service comes directly from their customers. One Yelp reviewer boasted of expedient service and satisfactory food.

“Within seconds of walking in the door, we were seated. Drink orders were taken right away and chips and salsa were brought out with

our drinks,” they wrote. “The portions are HUGE! We could have split one entree...Next time we are in the area we will have to go back.”

Hacienda Mexico

195 E. Main St., Bartow, FL 33830

www.facebook.com/HaciendaMexicoR/

Located at the corner of Main Street and Central Avenue, Hacienda Mexico offers fine Mexican dining for lunch and dinner with both indoor and outdoor street-side seating.

One Yelp reviewer bemoans how difficult it is to get good Mexican food in their rural setting, especially since they can’t get delivery. Thankfully, Hacienda Mexico offers them their Mexican fix with all of the fixings.

“I felt my meal was made fresh. My husband only ate half his burrito since it was huge. He ate the rest for lunch,” they wrote. “I am so glad I got food from this place it was a nice change to other places I normally get.”

Heather Nagy, Waterfowl at Lake Morton, Lakeland, Acrylic on canvas, 2024 Mayfaire by-the-Lake Featured Artwork.

Special to T&T Magazine

The Polk Museum of Art’s annual fine art festival Mayfaire by-the-Lake — presented by Citizens Bank & Trust and The Ruthvens — has officially unveiled the Feature Poster Artist and Image for its 52nd celebration on May 11 & 12, 2024. This year’s image, painted by artist Heather Nagy, features a scene familiar to native Lakelanders and Mayfaire visitors alike: the shores of Lake Morton decorated with wandering waterfowl against the backdrop of colorful lily pads and a vibrant Lakeland sky.

Nagy, a professional artist based in Florida, was inspired to focus her poster image on Lake Morton’s wood storks after discovering that these recognizable wading birds were once on the brink of extinction. Reflecting on the rich wildlife found along the lake, Nagy was touched by nature’s ability to thrive in the face of danger. “Seeing these birds now reminds of the resilience and the beauty that comes when diverse species find ways to live together,” Nagy said. The painting, rendered with bright, candy-colored brushstrokes, is characteristic of Nagy’s award-winning impressionistic style.

A Michigan native, Heather Nagy received her BFA in Graphic Design from Western Michigan University. After honing her craft in Central Florida for several years, Nagy became a full-time artist in 2018 and is now a fixture of the fine art festival circuit. Nagy’s work has been exhibited throughout Florida and can be found in collections across the United States, Canada, and Europe. Her eye-catching paintings of landscapes, city scenes, and botanicals encourage viewers to be mindful of the beauty surrounding them, even — or especially if — they do not often take the time to notice it. Through her nature-centered art, Nagy aims to stir feelings of hope within the viewer.

Mayfaire festival coordinators Joy Williams and Leslie Norman selected Nagy from over 150 artists participating in the previous year’s competition. “We were drawn to the vivid colors of the cityscapes in other works done by Heather,” Williams explained. “We felt that she would be able to create a beautiful backdrop of Lake Morton, while giving attention to fowl beyond the signature swans on the lake.

Heather was a first-year artist last year, and we enjoyed seeing Lakeland through a new artist's eyes.”

Mayfaire by-the-Lake began in 1971 as a craft fair on the Lakeland Library lawn. Since then, it has grown to be one of the largest outdoor art festivals in Central Florida, welcoming over 15,000 visitors and artists from all over the country and becoming the city’s most beloved Mother’s Day weekend tradition.

Event details and visitor information can be found at Mayfairebythelake.org. Co-Title Sponsors for the 52nd Mayfaire by-theLake are Citizens Bank & Trust and The Ruthvens. Additional sponsors include Subaru Lakeland, Southern Homes, Publix Super Markets Charities, Friends of Mayfaire, the City of Lakeland, LKLD Arts Mayor’s Council of the Arts, Visit Central Florida, and Culture Builds Florida.

Another Season Goes, Another Season Comes

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

The year, 2005. 18 years ago. For older people, that time was but a moment of their life. For younger people, it very well could have been their entire life. For me, it was one of my most formative years.

I remember moving to Winter Haven. I had relocated there with my mother and stepdad after living 18 years in Virginia. Before, I lived in rural Virginia where the nearest store and fast-food place was a 10-minute drive away. Now, I lived in the suburbs where most places were mere walking distance.

my license and first car, I still missed taking public transit. Now, I could watch a movie at the local theater, grab a bite to eat at a burger joint, or take a trip to the mall whenever I wanted without having to wait for a bus.

Polk County was a place of many firsts. It was where I first learned how to drive. Where I received my driver’s license. Where I received my first car and job. Where I met my best friend in the world. (And where we eventually parted ways.) Where I published my first book. And, sadly, where my mother passed away.

1. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: When did April Fools’ Day come into being?

2. GEOGRAPHY: In which nation is the Great Victoria Desert located?

3. MOVIES: What sport is featured in the movie “The Mighty Ducks”?

4. HISTORY: What is the name of the island where Napoleon was exiled in 1814?

5. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is the largest rodent in the world?

6. LITERATURE: What is the name of Ron Weasley’s pet rat in the “Harry Potter” book series?

7. U.S. STATES: Which letter of the alphabet is not in any U.S.

state’s name?

8. TELEVISION: Which iconic 1960s sitcom inspired two spinoff hits, “Petticoat Junction” and “Green Acres”?

9. U.S. PRESIDENTS: Which president was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery in WWII?

10. ANATOMY: How many pairs of spinal nerves exist in humans

I moved to Polk County right when I was starting my freshman year in college at Pensacola. (Or, at least the freshman year at my new college.) While I was away at school, my folks worked in the school system and continued to do so long after I graduated in 2009.

Living in the suburbs, I appreciated being able to walk everywhere. Five years after I moved, Walmart opened up across the street. Now, a place where I formerly had to drive ten minutes to shop at, I could walk to in the same amount of time.

When I wasn’t walking, I was taking the bus. Some people don’t like public transportation. For me, being able to go anywhere in the county for a small fee was nothing short of liberating. If I wanted to go to the mall or library, I didn’t have to wait for my folks to drive me. I could just hop on the bus and go.

Eventually, I learned how to drive, but even when I received

I won’t go into grave detail. Sufficed to say, after my mom died last year, I found myself between a rock and a hard place. Let’s just say recent developments required me to move back to my old hometown in Virginia with the rest of my family.

I’m going to miss a lot about Winter Haven and Polk County. I’m going to miss not having to deal with below-freezing weather. Being able to visit Disney World only half an hour away. Being able to walk or bike anywhere I wanted. Being able to watch a movie at the theater every other week. (The nearest cinema is now an hour away!) Eating a bowl of ramen at The Joinery. Taking a stroll around Lake Mirror in Downtown Lakeland. Taking an afternoon stroll in Eagle Ridge Mall. Taking the bike to Just Move Athletic Club. And so much more.

My season in Polk County has passed. A brand new season is upon me. Lord only knows what’s in store for me. Goodbye, Florida. I will miss you.
