Do you love the classics like Led Zeppelin? The Police? Nirvana? Pearl Jam? Would you love to hear their best hits from their top albums performed live? Now you can with Classic Albums Live making its epic return to the RP Funding Center in Lakeland.

After being cancelled this past season, the hit concert series Classic Albums Live is returning to Lakeland with shows based on the best of the best rock albums, their songs recreated note for note and cut for cut. You’ll almost swear you’re hearing the songs being played straight from the vinyl records themselves.

THE UPCOMING SHOW LINEUP

INCLUDES:

May 18: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Damn the Torpedoes,

July 16: Supertramp Breakfast in America.

Aug. 27: Led Zeppelin, Physical Graffiti.

Oct. 19: Police, Synchronicity.

Dec. 15: Lithium Experience, Music of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and more.

Series passes are currently on sale as of Mar. 31, and single tickets go on sale Apr. 21. Season passes are $170, which includes parking and preferred seating.

Thanks to the generous sponsorship of Southern Homes and Max 98.3, Classic Albums Live is finally gracing the stages of Lakeland once again after being cancelled.

“Southern Homes saved Classic Albums,” said Tony Camarillo, Director at

RP Funding Center. “We are really excited to bring the Classic Album Series this year, primarily because it was planned to not bring it back due to some changes that will be occurring here at the venue and how we approach business.”

The RP Funding Center recently changed its business model. Originally, the Center purchased acts wholesale for their venue and provided marketing, thus taking on

the risk of bringing acts into the building an covering the costs through ticket sales, Camarillo said.

However, rather than buying and promoting shows, the RP Funding Center has since shifted its business model towards renting its venue for shows. The reason for the change has been the many difficulties the venue has experienced over the past few years, mostly due to the COVID19 pandemic.

“Some of our entertainment events over the last few years since COVID have not been as strong as in the past, so we are trying to experiment a little bit,” Camarillo explained. “We will test the waters here over the next year and see how it works for us and see if we will have any success with it.”

Another reason for the change was driven by financial decisions from the city. The building has an obligation to the city’s taxpayers, so drastic changes had to be made accordingly, which included limiting expenses and making major cuts and even layoffs.

“We devised this plan as a way for the city to keep us operating, and we have a

good five-year financial plan with changes we can set goals set by the commission,” Camarillo said. “It was a bittersweet decision, but I think in the end, we have a strong rental business, and we hope to get stronger, we are hoping to look at the bottom-line success that we can do.”

Because the RP Funding Center was no longer purchasing acts, the Classic Albums Live series was not initially going to perform. However, thanks to the sponsorship from Southern Homes and Max 98.3, the popular series will be making its return this season.

“We are continuing something that has been going on for 15-plus years here at the building, so we are excited to have them back. They are like family to us,” Camarillo said. “We have a great relationship with Classic Albums with the subscribers and local community that really gets behind this series.”

Citizens Bank & Trust Mayfaire by-theLake is excited to reveal the Feature Poster Artist and Image for the 51st Mayfaire celebration on May 13 & 14, 2023. In a dynamic scene by artist Alex Lanier, Mayfaire’s signature swan is reimagined as a futuristic explorer. Propelled with the help of rocket boosters, the swan takes in familiar Lakeland sites, including the historic Lake Mirror Promenade. This vivid penand-ink-inspired digital painting encapsulates Lanier’s signature travel-inspired pop surrealist style.

“We selected Alex Lanier because we wanted our feature poster image to represent the next 50 years of the Polk Museum of Art,” explains Joy Williams, one of the Mayfaire coordinators. “We fell in love with his creativity and forward-thinking. A graduate from Harrison School for the

Arts in Lakeland, Lanier has been a May faire participant for the past five years, and we’ve enjoyed watching his artwork evolve.”

Mayfaire by-the-Lake is one of the largest and oldest outdoor art festivals in Central Florida. Since its humble beginnings as a craft fair on the library lawn in 1971, Mayfaire by-the-Lake has grown to become a beloved Mother’s Day weekend tradition that brings over 70,000 visitors annually to view fine art along the banks of Lake Morton.

In addition to honing his craft at Harrison locally, Lanier is an award-winning artist, who studied at Florida International University, and works out of Tallahassee, Florida. Mayfaire by-the-Lake served as one of Lanier’s earliest inspirations as a young artist. “I was a young, curious art

student circling around the art festival multiple times gathering inspiration. I can remember pulling my sketchbook out and drawing random memories of the festival as soon as I got home,” relates Lanier.

As a freelance digital artist, Alex Lanier has created illustrations, storyboards, and concept art for iconic brands across the world. Lanier’s cutting-edge travel subjects have been displayed in art festivals and galleries nationwide and, this May, his work will be showcased at this year’s Mayfaire festival alongside 145 other artists.

“Getting accepted in the show multiple years in a row was definitely an exciting full circle moment but being asked to be the Featured Poster Artist for this year’s festival is literally a dream come true,” says Lanier. “I’m honored and I hope to inspire the next generations of Harrison School for

I Exist

Why am I writing this column?

The answer to that question seems obvious. I’m writing this column because, five years ago, the previous monthly columnist retired, and my editor, Chris Douglas, decided it was a good idea to make me the replacement columnist. I thought it was a good idea, too, which is why I agreed to the gig. Ever since then, I’ve been penning this monthly column.

But that doesn’t answer the real question. Why am I writing this column?

Again, the answer seems obvious. I live in a capitalist economy that requires human beings like myself to be the only species on earth to pay to live on this planet. And because, as Homer Simpson once put it, money can be exchanged for goods and services, I work a job like this to make the money I need to buy the goods and services I require to continue existing.

But that still doesn’t answer my question. Why am I writing this column?

1. AD SLOGANS: Which company was advertised with the slogan, “Think Outside the Bun”?

2. TELEVISION: Which TV show spawned the spinoff sitcom “Mama’s Family”?

3. U.S. CITIES: In which city would you find the USS Arizona Memorial?

4. ANATOMY: What are the bones that make up the spine known as?

5. GEOGRAPHY: What is the lowest point in the United States?

6. GENERAL KNOWLEDGE: What is the traditional material in a 40th anniversary gift?

7. MOVIES: What is the name of the tow truck in the animated movie “Cars”?

8. CURRENCY: Which former president is depicted on the U.S. $50 bill?

9. LANGUAGE: What does the texting acronym SMH mean?

10. LITERATURE: Where do Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends live?

Well, like any good writer, I write to express my opinions. I express those opinions because I hope that they might influence other people. If other people knew what I thought about something, perhaps I would be able to persuade them into thinking the same way, and, in doing so, change the world.

Every writer dreams of changing the world through their writing. But, let’s be honest: it rarely happens. Unless you reach the level of notoriety like Shakespeare or Frost, you’re writing isn’t going to matter jack squat. Very few writers achieve such fame or success.

California.

(Pearl

Carol Burnett Show”

And, let’s be perfectly honest here, I’m not going to change any minds. Readers who agree with me will merely nod along to what I have to say, while readers who don’t will, at best, turn red and crumple their magazine in disgust—or, at worst, pen me an angry e-mail.

I’m not changing any minds. I know my place. I’m just a columnist for a local magazine that lists upcoming public events and advertises local bars and eateries. It’s a good magazine, by all means. (Hi, Chris!) But it’s not like Joe Biden or Ron DeSantis is going to pick up a copy anytime soon, read what I have to say, and allow my opinions to influence their legislation. (Then again, do politicians even care what columnists even have to say? I doubt it!)

So, I have to ask: why am I writing this column?

I guess the real answer is—because I’m going to die!

Oh, not anytime soon. But I will die. Someday. Eventually. I will pass from this mortal life. My body will decompose in the planet’s crust. And centuries from now, any remnants of myself will be long gone save for perhaps a lone tombstone.

I will die, and so will everyone else I know. Soon, there will be nobody who remembers who I am. And if you don’t exist, and nobody who knew you exists, can you really say you existed? As the Good Book says, life is but a vapor, appearing briefly before being quickly snuffed out.

So that, I guess, is why I write. I want to leave behind a record of myself and my thoughts. I want people years, centuries, even millennia from now, to discover my writing and know that I was a person who existed and who had thoughts and feelings and opinions and dreams and aspirations. Because I existed. Because I exist.

I think; therefore, I am. I write; therefore, I think, and thus, I exist.

That’s why I’m writing this column: to prove I exist.

Lakeland REALTORS® to Celebrate Centennial Milestone

Special to T&T Magazine

Lakeland REALTORS® - a professional trade organization chartered by the National Association of REALTORS® who has continually served its members and community for ten decades – is poised to celebrate its 100th year in 2023.

Chartered on April 14, 1923, Lakeland REALTORS® will commemorate this centennial anniversary with a 1920’s-themed gala hosted at Bonnet Springs Park for its members.

“We are looking forward to celebrating the past 100 years - and the next 100 years - with our members,” said Lakeland REALTORS® CEO Barbara Barnes. “There is so much history to cherish, and even more great things to come for this organization as we move into the future.”

Lakeland REALTORS® will bring its celebration to the community throughout the year as well, beginning with banners on the Downtown Lakeland lamp posts.

A new initiative, 100 Acts of Service, has also been initiated to celebrate the organization’s 100th year. This program encourages and recognizes the members of Lakeland REALTORS® for engagement in and service to the Lakeland community. The initiative highlights the organization’s history of serving its community in addition to efforts to fight for private property rights, and low taxes and utility fees for residents.

“I have learned the importance of our association for not only my business and educational opportunities, but also for the support for individual homeowners’ rights as well,” said Lakeland REALTORS® Member and Immediate Past Board President Shannon Cornell.

The past 100 years have provided opportunities for Lakeland REALTORS® to make strides,

but there is a lot to look forward to for Lakeland REALTORS® and its members as well. As the Lakeland community grows, the organization continues to look ahead at the next 100 years in service to Lakeland residents.

“This year marks our organization’s incredible achievement of 100 years of dedication to advocating for our REALTORS®’ best interests in the policy-making process for our industry,” said current Lakeland REALTORS® Board President Jana Lutz. “Lakeland REALTORS® will continue to do the necessary work of addressing our community’s concerns by being a voice at the top of the decision-making process.”

Lakeland REALTORS® is a professional trade organization chartered by the National

Association of REALTORS®. We have been serving our members and community for 100 years and continue to fight for private property rights, low taxes, keeping utility fees to a minimum and affordable housing opportunities in our area. Our leadership objectives are to unite those engaged in the recognized branches of the real estate profession for the purpose of exerting a beneficial influence upon the profession and related interests. To promote and maintain high standards of conduct in the real estate profession as expressed in the Code of Ethics of the National Association of REALTORS®.

For more information on Lakeland REALTORS®, visit www.lakelandrealtors.org; or contact Hannah Holjes at Tinsley Creative, email: hannah@tinsleycreative.com; phone: 863.583.0081.
