Stanford Wines Offers More Than a Fine Wine Experience

4 APRIL 2022

By James Coulter Photos By Chris Douglas Over the past year, Sam and Sarah Brunt have been offering a diverse selection of wines and pairing them with unique food selections at their wine bar, Stanford Wines. They offer more than 200 wines from all over the world, including specialty varietals from countries that very few people have heard about and which very few other bars serve. From $5 a glass to $400 a bottle, they offer only the finest wines made from all-natural ingredients without the additives and chemicals often found in store-bought brands. So if you are seeking fine wine served nowhere else and prepared with only natural ingredients, then look no further than Polk County’s one and only natural wine bar in Bartow. Feel free to order craft beer, frozen slushies (Frośe), and wines and pair them with nearly 20 food items from lobster rolls to French ham and cheese sandwiches, which will be on their new lunch menu starting in April. To celebrate their one-year anniversary, they have completed renovations to their establishment, upgrading everything from the lighting to the plumbing to offer an upscale ambience with a New York City vibe. Due to the loyalty of their local customers, they plan on opening a few new locations outside of the county in the near future. Sam Brunt recently sat down with us to answer a few questions about his establishment. Here is what he had to say:

FIND US ON FACEBOOK AND WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

Q: What inspired you to open your wine bar a year ago? A: We love natural, additive-free wines. I have owned a cigar event business for 14 years, while my wife has owned a bridal hair and makeup company, and boudoir photography company for about the same amount of time. My first job in college was at a boutique wine shop in Virginia, Sweet Magnolias, where I learned how to pair cheese with wine nearly 20 years ago. Because of our event businesses, we were hit very hard during the pandemic. We knew we wanted to diversify, and thought, what was available to be open. We could do a grocery, hardware, or liquor store. Those were the only things open at the time. We did not want to do the first two, so we decided to do a high-end wine and beer retail shop. Our building owner, at the time, suggested a wine bar instead of just retail store. At the time, wine bars were allowed to open with kitchens, which we would have opened up anyway. We found those that do not offer food don’t have as much success. So we opened it! We started with ten different food items. Now, a year later, we will be opening for lunch. We serve items from lobster rolls and everything in between; including a French ham and cheese sandwich. A lot of things not currently offered in Polk County. Q: What has been the key to your success? A: The locals, really. The people in Bartow have been

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

really good to us. And now our names are getting out there more in Lakeland and Winter Haven as well as the surrounding areas - even people traveling through from the West Coast to the East Coast! They pop in to let you know they are here and how great everything is. Q: What do customers love most about what you offer? A: The ambience is really good. We have a very old school New York City vibe. We have a lot of unique art over the walls. We have Andy Warhols and original pieces. My wife does a lot of photography, so we also incorporate some of her pieces. We have an 11-ft hand carved mirror and a big chandelier. Guests love that we offer tastings of our different wines, very educational, and you can see how to pair different foods and wines. We look at food and wine differently from what others dos. We do not slop it on a menu and let people figure it out. We try to educate and explain because Polk County, while they like wine, is used to buying it at a grocery store or Walmart or ABC. Their knowledge, as with most people, about wines beyond those stores is limited. We have been able to educate them and help people grow their knowledge of wine…as soon as they try it, they love it. So we are getting them to try this and that… and usually, we are pretty good at deciphering what people’s tastes are. We can get them into the right wine, and

we have over 200. Q: Tell us about the renovations to your place. The place was an antique store with barely a bathroom. It wasn’t even a public use bathroom. The toilet barely worked, and the sink barely worked. We had to renovate the plumbing and electrical. Everything was redone completely. There was not a single thing that wasn’t been redone at our place, and we spent a good amount of our own money on it. We didn’t take a single loan or any investor money. Q: What are your expectations for the future? A: We plan on opening a few more locations. Probably not in Polk County because it is pretty well served at this point. There are a few more places opening up that we know about. So the plan over the next few years is to open a few more places, and they will be more specialized. Each may be geared towards a specific food group. The future looks bright, tasty and full of unique wines! Stanford Wines is located at 165 South Central Ave., Bartow, FL 33830. APRIL 2022 7

by James Coulter From soda cans and glass jars, to shopping carts, traffic signs, and even a safe, almost anything and everything has been pulled out of the Chain of Lakes in Winter Haven. Several tons of trash are removed from the lakes each year during the annual Project E.A.G.L.E. clean-up by Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful. This year’s cleanup event will be hosted on Saturday, April 30 at Lake Shipp Park. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with lunch, shirts and clean-up supplies for those registered in advance – while supplies last. Lunch begins at 11 a.m. Several vendors will offer information about local conservation efforts, and live music will be performed by Coastal Acoustic Barefoot, A.K.A. TMike & Duke. For more than 30 years, Project E.A.G.L.E. (Enhancing A Great Living Environment) has remained the oldest and longest-running conservation project of its kind in Florida. The annual clean-up is organized by Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful, a local non-profit organization dedicated to remaining true to its name. “Keep Winter Haven Clean & Beautiful

(KWHCB) organizational purpose is to encourage individuals to take greater responsibility and action to enhance their community environment,” their website states. “Through education and the media, we want to heighten awareness of the lakes and incorporate litter prevention, recycling

and environmental stewardship into our activities to keep the lakes clean and beautiful.” Every year, through clean-up efforts such as Project E.A.G.L.E., KWHCB helps remove and recycle 1000’s of pounds of litter from local communities, shorelines, and lakes, especially the Chain of Lakes. For more than 40 years, KWHCB has remained strong and growing in their numbers, and they hope this year will see an especially large turnout now that COVID19 is winding down, explained Rhonda Todd, KWHCB Executive Director. “We would love to see a huge volunteer turnout,” she said. “We hope to see a lot of people show up and support keeping our community clean and beautiful. We’ve been working to get the word out about how important it is to keep our environment clean and mitigate litter as much as possible, because the litter in the street typically ends up in storm water drains then in our lakes, and it is harmful to our environment and our way of life, and [with] the Chain of Lakes being a crown jewel in our community, we want to do everything to make sure that is long lasting.” While being only her second year organizing Project E.A.G.L.E. as the organi-

zation's new director, Rhonda Todd has worked and volunteered with several other non-profit organizations and events locally for more than 25 years. She praises the KWHCB Board, volunteers and community partners for the success and longevity of the organization. While the COVID crisis has affected their events during that time, more people have been attending recently, and many more have volunteered for this year’s event, she said. “People are very excited to get back into the community and help with cleaning up the community, especially the shorelines and lake areas,” she said. “Winter Haven has the most incredible community and the people who come out to this event truly care about the area, it is a blessing to see our friends and neighbors come together in service.” Melanie Brown Culpepper is another local resident who has remained adamant about giving back to her community. She has volunteered for Project E.A.G.L.E. for eight years. She loves being able to come together with her fellow Winter Haven residents and clean up their local community to make it an even nicer and healthier place to live. Melanie has been a powerful force behind recent “Crawlin’ on the Chain” events hosted by Tanner’s Lakeside annually in March. Proceeds from this year’s event benefited the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation, which Melanie Brown Culpepper runs, and KWHCB’s Project E.A.G.L.E. “I love Polk County and all it stands for,” she said. “The Chain of Lakes is part of our community here in Winter Haven and it’s important for all of us to help keep our lakes clean and beautiful. It’s great seeing everyone come out to help support our Chain clean up and to get involved. We always need volunteers and what better way than to come together on Project E.A.G.L.E. and also enjoy a day on the Chain.” Project E.A.G.L.E. has remained an

Earth Day tradition in Winter Haven for more than three decades. The dedication of its residents to ensure that their local lakes and communities are clean and beautiful has allowed the event to remain as long running as it has been. Todd hopes that they will continue to keep the tradition going even further into the future. “We have been doing this in our Winter Haven community for a long time thanks to the amazing residents of our community and with help from our city and other great partners,” she said. “There are a lot of great reasons people want to keep our community beautiful and strong. It promotes a healthy lifestyle, is good for the economy, it’s great for tourism, it is great for real estate and property values. Truly a win for our beautiful and vibrant community!” To Volunteer with Project E.A.G.L.E. coming up Saturday, April 30th and/or to get more information, please visit their website at: https://www.keepwinterhavenbeautiful.org/

It's Never Too Late To Save The Earth We have less than a decade to stop global warming, according to a report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Otherwise, the earth’s temperature could increase to the point of causing irreversible environmental damage. In the face of such odds, it’s easy to despair and accept our “inevitable” fate. Yet even on the brink of destruction, things can always turn around for the better. If you want proof, look no further than Copper Hill, Tennessee. In the mid-19th century, Copper Hill was home to an extensive mining industry, with countless trees cut

down to fuel the smelters. In fact, by 1861, most of the forest had been cleared away, and nearly a decade later, logs had to be imported from Georgia to supply fuel, according to Wikipedia. The sulfuric gas from the smelters mixed with water vapor and returned to the earth and rivers as acid rain, eroding the topsoil and killing off the plant and aquatic life. By the early 20th century, Copper Hill had become a desert-like badland in the middle of lush wilderness. The reddish-brown landscape, void of vegetation or wildlife, more resembled the Martian surface than any place on Earth. In fact, the entire area could be

seen from space! Nearly a century of mining and deforestation transformed it into such an ecological disaster. However, by 2001, conservation and revitalization efforts were underway to reverse the environmental damage. With the assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency and Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, initiatives like The Copperhill Watershed Restoration Project, as reported by Nooga Today, “built water treatment plants to treat underground mine waters and stormwater runoff, continued tree planting efforts, built fencing around areas that are a risk for humans, and identified and remediated all human health hazards.” Nearly 20 years later, and what was once a barren landscape visible from space has reverted to its natural state with lush green flora and thriving fauna, a place where visitors and locals alike could enjoy outdoor activities like camping, hiking, and fishing. In fact, this restoration project proved so monumental that it won the 2020 “Grand Conceptor” Award in the 53rd Annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA), an annual nationwide competition hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) to highlight achievements in engineering. If a place like Copper Hill can change from a desolate

wasteland created by a century of pollution to a thriving ecosystem, then there’s no reason to believe any environmental disaster cannot be reversed. Last November, I discussed the Great Pacific Patch, a large mass of floating refuge in the Pacific Ocean so large that many scientists assumed it could never be cleaned up without bankrupting several countries; and yet one team of ingenious engineers designed an innovative netting system named “Jenny” that could clear away the garbage in a decade. And remember the giant hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica? The one scientists claimed could never be fixed? Well, it’s been fixed! After many years and a CFC ban, it’s since shrunk to the smallest size ever recorded. Within the past half-century, rivers and lakes that were once heavily polluted have become crystal clear, endangered plant and animal species have been brought back from the brink of extinction, and clean energy sources have become more effective and profitable than fossil fuels. The world is not fated to end. It is never too late to curtail global warming. If a small place like Copper Hill can be saved, why not the entire planet? of the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, Lake Wales, FL will deliver the inspirational Easter message. The service will conclude with a half-hour concert performed by D’hollander on the 60-bell Singing Tower carillon. sion. The Easter Sunrise Service has been an annual tradition since April 17, 1927, making it the longest continuously running event at Bok Tower Gardens. Reverend G.W.R. Cadman formally dedicated the Sanctuary during the first service. The son of Gardens’ founder, Curtis Bok, said the service

“quite literally helps the sun get over the horizon on Easter morning.” After 8:00 a.m. general admission to the Gardens is $16 for adults and $5 for children ages 5-12. Members and children under 5 are admitted free. El Retiro will be open from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and tours of the historic home can be purchased for an additional fee. APRIL 2022 21

LEMON STREET OUTDOOR SCULPTURES 22nd Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition

The 22nd Annual Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition is on display along the Lemon Street Promenade and Lakeland Public Library. The sculptures have all been installed and will be on display now through the end of 2022. The community is encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture by visiting the People’s Choice web page at https://bit.ly/2022FLOSCPeoplesChoice or through the City’s Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/media/set?vanity=LakelandGov&set=a.337867778369948. Pam Page, Deputy Director of Parks & Recreation said, “Cast your vote for your favorite sculptures in the 2022 Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition. The People's Choice Award will be given to the sculpture with highest number of votes. Visit the City of Lakeland’s Facebook page or the dedicated web page and cast your vote now!” Participants can select multiple sculp-

tures in the survey! We won't make you narrow it down to just one. The survey can only be submitted once per device. Voting ends April 28th at 4 p.m. In the fall of 2021, artists submitted applications through an online application process for consideration in the 2021 show. A jury comprised of City staff, Polk Museum of Art representatives, and members from the local arts community gathered to review the pieces of art. Artists submitted more than 60 sculptures for review, with the jury picking 12 of the very best to be displayed. This year, the footprint of the exhibit space has expanded to include two sculptures at the Lakeland Public Library on Lake Morton. The remaining 10 sculptures cover three blocks of Lemon Street between South Florida and Massachusetts Avenue. The artwork along the Lemon Street Promenade and Library provides a great

aesthetic that can be enjoyed on a weekend stroll or as a diversion while visiting the swans on Lake Morton. The jury chose several pieces that lend themselves to selfie spots. "Red Digital Arch" and "Guardian Wings" can be found on Lemon Street, but you won't want to miss "Wonder" at the Library - where you can stand underneath whimsical flowers for a Seuss-inspired photo opportunity. Page said, “The sculptures on Lemon Street were introduced to provide free access to public art for all who live and visit our community. We are fortunate to live in a City that recognizes the value of public art that introduces culture and well-being.” For more information about the artist, sculptures and the Florida Outdoor Sculpture Competition, please visit https://www.lakelandgov. net/departments/parks-recreation/florida-outdoor-sculpture-competition.

RED

Here we have Red, he is a 1 year old who is neutured and up-to-date on shots. He loves people, attention and feather toys. Red is laid back and relaxes on the sofa whenever he isn't stuffing his face with food or treats. The cat carrier is his mortal enemy. If love and food is what you have to offer him, you'll have a friend for life!

BLONDIE

Blondie is a tan female Hound mix. She is approximately 2 years old and has been spayed. Special to T&T Magazine The Polk Museum of Art is thrilled to announce its 50th annual Citizens Bank & Trust Mayfaire bythe-Lake, to be held on the shores of Lake Morton May 7 and 8, 2022, from 9 am to 4 pm. Visitors and art enthusiasts can enjoy Mother’s Day weekend with a stroll around the lake and the opportunity to shop at over 160 artist booths featuring art of all media, ranging from painting and sculpture to jewelry and photography and everything in between. Mayfaire by-the-Lake is one of the longest-standing traditions of Lakeland. Beginning in 1971 as a small craft fair, Mayfaire has grown into a beloved annual event for the community and beyond and has been ranked among Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “200 Best Art Shows” for ten years in a row. “Citizens Bank & Trust is proud to serve as presenting sponsor of Mayfaire as we celebrate the event’s 50th year,” states Greg Littleton, president and CEO of Citizens Bank & Trust. In honor of the 50th Mayfaire celebration, visitors will find even more to enjoy around the lake this May than ever before. Families can visit an expanded Ruthven’s Mayfaire Kids Zone at its new and larger location on the corner of East Walnut and Indiana Avenue for free children’s activities. In addition, the Polk Museum of Art itself will be the

50th Anniversary “Headquarters” and will celebrate Mayfaire’s history with special exhibitions, including “Mayfaire at 50: Award Winners,” in the Murray/Ledger Gallery of the Museum, highlighting past festival winners. “Mayfaire by-the-Lake is a Mother’s Day weekend tradition like no other, and, at 50 years young, Mayfaire is returning stronger than ever for 2022,” said Dr. Alex Rich, executive director and chief curator of the Polk Museum of Art. “The Museum takes enormous pride in having hosted — and having been able to host — Mayfaire for a half-century now, a true tribute to our supportive and art-loving community. We remain indebted to all of our community partners, and our devoted visitors, for helping us to make Mayfaire the event of the season year in and out and generation after generation.” The weekend festivities will continue with the Lakeland Runners Club’s 43rd Annual Mayfaire 5K on Saturday evening. The run will begin at 7 p.m. near Lake Mirror and ends on Francis C Langford Promenade. Interested participants can register online or volunteer for the run at https://runsignup. com/Race/FL/Lakeland/Mayfaire5k. Registration will close Wednesday, May 4. “ Additional information about this year’s Mayfaire Judge, Featured Poster Artist, and event details are available on MayfairebytheLake.org. 50th Mayfaire Sponsors include Citizens Bank & Trust,

The Ruthvens, Frost Law Firm, Subaru Lakeland, Southern Homes, Publix Super Markets Charities, Tampa Maid Foods and Visit Central Florida, with Media Sponsors, The Ledger | Localiq, Max 98.3 and WLKF, LALToday, Orlando Arts, WEDU PBS, and LKLD Magazine. The Featured Poster Artist and Image created as a tribute to 50 years of Mayfaire, Mike Williams’ featured image spotlights the iconic swans of Lakeland with artists’ tents dotting the border of Lake Morton in the distance. Williams, who has attended Mayfaire since 2010, designed an image to represent the evolution of the annual Polk Museum of Art fine art festival over its 50 years. “The featured image captures the view from Williams’ typical booth location at Mayfaire,” explains Joy Williams, one of the coordinators of the Polk Museum of art’s fine art festival. “It is a representation of what both artists and visitors can experience throughout Mother’s Day weekend.” While much has changed since Mayfaire got its start as a craft fair on the library lawn in 1971, Mayfaire by-the-Lake has grown into an annual Mother’s Day weekend tradition and a premier fine art festival, ranked among Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “200 Best Art Shows” for ten years in a row. “Williams’ artwork embodies the nostalgia of Mayfaire, reminds us of its humble beginnings, and conveys the excitement of its return again this year,”

states Leslie Norman, also a Mayfaire coordinator. “We are excited to hear the response from the community and are looking forward to offering the image as a poster, t-shirt, and other anniversary merchandise for Mayfaire visitors.” For Williams, his artist journey began when he made a career change and opened a small gallery on Catawba Island on the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. In search of new opportunities, he moved to sunny Florida. Since then, the Tampa Bay artist's inspiration comes from traveling, where he finds endless subjects for his work. Williams’ vintage-styled illustrations can be found in private and public galleries around the world and, this May, his work will be showcased on the shores of Lake Morton along with that of 145 other artists. Event details and information can be found at MayfairebytheLake.org. 50th Mayfaire Sponsors include Citizens Bank & Trust, The Ruthvens, Frost Law Firm, Subaru Lakeland, Southern Homes, Publix Super Markets Charities, Tampa Maid Foods and Visit Central Florida, with Media Sponsors, The Ledger | Localiq, Max 98.3 and WLKF, LALToday, Orlando Arts, and LKLD Magazine.
