Killer Beaz F

or 40 years, Truett “Killer Beaz” Beasley has been splitting sides through his comedy. His inspiration for his career as a stand-up comic started humbly enough in his Mississippi, within the walls—of all places!—of a funeral home. Truett grew up upstairs in a funeral parlor, where his father worked as a director and embalmer. As young as three-years-old, he saw people come in and out of his home, sad and crying. He didn’t like that they were so unhappy, and he wanted desperately to make them feel better.

COMEDY APRIL 8TH • 7PM • TANNER'S LAKESIDE

“I would see people come and go every day from my home that were sad and crying,” Truett said. “I learned as a kid, as a toddler, that I could do silly little stuff, and the crying people would stop crying and come to talk to me. To this day, it fueled my compulsion to make people laugh and smile.” Since then, he has been entertaining audiences through his stand-up routines. He has an instinctive drive to make people laugh, to the point where he feels it is his life’s duty to make people happy. For 40 years, he has been doing exactly that. “I feel like every day we should start our day happy and confident that it will be another great day that God gave us until 10:30 or 11 when we figure out it will suck like yesterday,” he explained. His career started in 1982 in Jackson, Miss. Back then, he played blues guitar. He would play as the opening act for many bands. He performed so often that people recognized him and commended him for his performance. They told him his music was “Killer, Beaz!” (‘Beaz’ being an abbreviation of his last name ‘Beasley’), which inspired his stage name, ‘Killer Beaz’, which followed him into his career change as a comedian. Truett is a storyteller at heart. His comedy derives from his lively storytelling through embellished detail and O Henry-style twist ending punchlines that leave his audience members flabbergasted to the point of gasping for breath, he said.

by James

“I always believed surprise was the main ingredient with comedy,” he explained. “If someone comes up to you and [tells you] the joke about so and so, you don’t want to hear it again because you are not surprised by it, so I like to have twists and turns in my stories.” During his comedy routine in Mississippi, he told of a local eatery that was so cheap it didn’t have any salt or pepper shakers; instead, there was a big block of salt lick set up on a table in the middle of the room. Truett loves to embellish his details that way to make his punchlines go over the edge, but not so far that they offend people. Besides his stand-up comedy, Truett is currently working on a Discovery Channel show called “Moonshiners,” a docuseries about a group of county folk distilling moonshine in their backwoods home. Truett admires them for the genius behind their craft, and he appreciates how the show often delves into the science behind it. Of course, he constantly thinks of ways the show could be “improved.” He jokingly told how he sent a memo to the executive producer of the Discovery Channel in NY that they should combine “Moonshiners” with “Naked and Afraid” and call it “Why is Everybody Stinkin Naked?” As for his comedy, he wants to give his audience a good time. He started his life wanting to make people feel better about themselves, and he has made it his life’s mission to make people more cheerful through his jokes. “If I don’t have them belly-laughing and hear them slap out, I feel I did a good job,” he said. “I want them to be reduced to an amount of goo from having such a workout with belly laughing. That is my goal.” Killer Beaz will be performing on Thurs., Apr. 8 at 7 p.m. at Tanners Lakeside, located at 1006 Lake Howard Dr. SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door, and $50 for VIP tickets, which includes preferred seating, a private meet and greet, and a signed DVD. hen Rob Little graduated high school, he wrote in his senior yearbook how he would go to college, graduate with a computer degree, and then become the best comedian he could be. He would go on to do exactly that. He graduated college, became a computer programmer at IBM, and a few years later, announced his intentions of pursuing his passion for comedy. “I sent out a company-wide e-mail to encourage people to quit their jobs and follow their dreams, [that] I am going to be a stand-up comedian,” Rob said. “Then I sent it. People were like, ‘company e-mail is not for personal use.’ I replied, ‘I don’t care. I quit!’” Since then, he has been living out his dream. He has worked in comedy for 23 years. He has hosted several Comedy Central specials and appeared on shows like The Dave Chapelle Show. He has performed acts on more than 200 cruise ships. He currently co-hosts a podcast, “Tom Foolery,” with fellow comedian Tommy Ryman. And he is even writing an animated movie for Pixar. Rob is a storyteller at heart. His high-energy comedy derives from the humorous anecdotes he experiences combined with the improv that he bounces off his audience members. He understands how comedy can bring people together, so he ensures that his humor doesn’t offend anybody, instead telling jokes that everyone can relate to, laugh at, and enjoy.

APRIL 29TH • 8PM • BARREL239 watching a comedy special by George Carlin. His parents laughed so hard and heartily that he wanted to make other people laugh like that. “They were crying laughing, and I thought that is what I wanted to do when I grow up,” Rob said. “I grew up in a town with one light. It was a pipe dream. I never thought it would happen...[but] that is exactly what I did.” His own comedy was influenced by great comedians like Bill Cosby, Eddie Murphy, and Sam Kennison. What his own style of humor is like is described differently by different age groups. Younger people compare him to Chris Farley, while older people compare him to Don Rickles. “It is a cool blend,” he said. “I think those are two phenomenal giants of comedy that I am super giddy to be compared to [them].” His comedy has personally touched so many people. One fan even sent him a $1,000 Home Depot gift card

Rob Little to renovate his house. She told him she first watched him on a cruise she took shortly after her husband passed away. She thought she would never feel happy again, but his comedy not only made her laugh again but laugh hysterically.

“You are helping people out,” he said. “You may have done these jokes a few times, and for these people, it is the first time they have ever heard it. So you try to make it fresh. You never know how you are impacting their lives. And it is cool when you get good stories like that.” Rob Little will be performing on Thurs., Apr. 29 at 8 p.m. for Winter Haven Laughs at Barrel239, located at 239 3rd St SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door. For more information and to get advance tickets visit www. WinterHavenLaughs. com or

“I don’t want anybody to be offended,” he said. “I don’t do politics. I steer clear of stuff that could potentially start a riot. I just want everybody to laugh. I make fun of myself. I make fun of anybody. I run the gamut.” The exact moment he recalls wanting to become a comedian he remembers vividly and precisely. He was five years old. His parents and his sister were on vacation. They were staying at a motel. He and his sister were lying on the floor, and his parents were in bed

Stop The Hate On March 16, a lone gunman went on a shooting spree at three massage parlors in Atlanta. He shot and killed eight people. Six of them were women of Asian descent. This mass shooting was the big news story in the media last month. However, if you watched certain other media outlets, you’d assume the more pressing matter were a few Dr. Seuss books being taken out of print due to “cancel culture.” Once upon a time, I probably would have agreed that “cancel culture” was a real problem. I would have complained how “political correctness” has run amok and how “oversensitive snowflakes” were censoring our media to turn the real

world into their personal “safe space.” But here’s the thing: I’ve grown up. And part of growing up involves learning to care about real-world problems. When the ground is still fresh with the blood of Asian women gunned down by an armed maniac, it’s hard to get mad at a few outdated children’s books being pulled from bookstores. By the way, most of those books aren’t any of the popular Dr. Seuss titles like “Cat in the Hat” or “Green Eggs and Ham.” They’re obscure titles like “The Cat’s Quizzer” or “McElligot’s Pool.” And these titles are being “banned” (or rather, no longer published by Dr. Seuss Enterprises)

because of illustrations that are racially-insensitive. Obviously, such books were products of their time and shouldn’t be judged by modern standards, and whether or not they should be “banned” or “censored” is a reasonable debate; but in light of recent events, is it really unreasonable for Dr. Seuss’s company to distance itself from these titles when their content has aged as well as milk—or rather, green eggs and ham?! Sure, their illustrations may have been intended as “jokes,” but there comes a point when “jokes” made at the expense of marginalized people stop being funny. (Note: they were never funny to begin with!) I’m sorry, but the yellow-skinned caricature of a “Chinaman” with a conical hat who “eats with sticks” from “Mulberry Street” is no longer funny after six Asian women were shot dead during a mass shooting at a massage parlor. A well-dressed white boy being carried around by Asian servants “who all wear their eyes at a slant” is no longer funny when hate crimes against Asian Americans have increased by more than 150% in the past year alone, according to data from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at California State University. You know what else isn’t “fun-

ny”? The former President of the United States continually referring to COVID-19 as the “Chinese virus” or “kung flu.” Or his personal lawyer mocking Asians by speaking in a fake accent and pantomiming a bow during a business meeting. We expect more professional behavior from people in such high political positions! Sure, the Atlanta gunman didn’t target Asian women because of a few Dr. Seuss books, nor will anti-Asian racism stop now that these books have been pulled. But we as a society need to acknowledge that such racist imagery and jokes aren’t “harmless fun.” They all contribute to the ongoing dehumanization of marginalized groups, and when these people have been dehumanized for so long, is it really a shock when some madman with a gun views them as potential targets rather than human beings? Asian Americans are not punchlines. They are not storybook caricatures. They are real people, and dehumanizing them through racist humor, past and present, has real consequences. Realizing that isn’t “cancel culture.” It’s called growing up. #StopAsianHate The views and opinions expressed in columns are not necessarily the views and opinions of Today & Tonight Magazine or Today & Tonight, Inc.

Polk Museum of Art Announces Mayfaire by-the-Lake 2021 The Polk Museum of Art welcomes Mayfaire by-the-Lake back to the shores of Lake Morton on May 8 and 9, 2021, taking extra precautions to ensure the return of Mayfaire will not only be safe for all visitors, artists, and staff, but a true celebration of art during the time of the pandemic. “Mayfaire by-the-Lake is one of the most celebrated Central Florida events each and every year,” reflects Dr. Alex Rich, executive director and chief curator of the Museum. “It is a Mother’s Day weekend tradition that we all look forward to, and our not being able to hold Mayfaire in 2020 was heartbreaking for us and the whole community.” For the safety of all attending, Mayfaire will follow and strongly encourage attendee adherence to all CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19. Visitors can expect hand sanitizing stations to be available, and all visitors, artists, and staff will be strongly recommended to wear masks within the boundaries of Mayfaire, including around Lake Morton, and required to wear masks when visiting the Museum. In addition, artists’ tents will each be placed six feet apart and spread farther around the perimeter of Lake Morton to encourage social distancing. Additional signage with social distancing recommendations, mask mandates, and more will be displayed to highlight and reinforce these guidelines. “We’re not taking hosting Mayfaire lightly,” added Dr. Rich, “And we want to ensure the safety of our visitors and all participants. The Polk County Health Department, with whom we have been in active conversation, will also have a presence at the festival, promoting best practices and COVID prevention awareness.” In addition to welcoming back Mayfaire by-the-Lake 2021, the Museum is also excited to announce the festival’s featured poster artist and his whimsical image. Returning to Mayfaire for his fifth year, the 2021 festival’s featured artist, R.L. Alexander, creates truly one-ofa-kind works that are engaging and thought-provoking, mixing familiar iconography with touches of escapism and fantasy. With his meticulous technique and attention to detail and 20 APRIL 2021

symbolism, Alexander’s compositions are visually pleasing and intentionally complex, drawing viewers —and their imaginations — into intricate new worlds. This year’s Mayfaire feature image, “Procession of the Swan Queen,” is no exception. The scene, which seems almost to leap from a fairy-tale picture-book, is inspired by Alexander’s love for the swans of Lake Morton and the unique story behind their origins in Lakeland. In 1953, the last two swans on Lake Morton disappeared. Heeding the request of a Lakeland couple then residing in the United Kingdom, Queen Elizabeth II sent two mute swans to Lakeland to help repopulate the Lake. The pair arrived at their new Central Florida home in 1957. “When you hear about the story of the swans on Lake Morton and the Queen, it conjures up fairytales and becomes otherworldly and special, definitely not something you hear every day,” explains Alexander. “I’m naturally inclined to paint things that mean something, even though they aren’t actually real.” In addition, Alexander also envisions “Procession of the Swan Queen” as an image of hope. Attuned to this period of pandemic anxiety, Alexander wants not only to remind Mayfaire visitors of this place and time but also to instill them with a sense of hope, especially as we begin to see possible uplift and relief ahead following the trials of the past year. “When we do get to venture out of our homes, I hope we get to be more of who we actually are,” said Alexander. “We won’t have to closet ourselves anymore; it will be a true celebration, just like the processional in the image.” Alexander’s work will represent the Polk Museum of Art’s Mayfaire by-theLake 2021 across all media, printed on Mayfaire T-shirts, posters, and other materials used to promote the annual festival. Mayfaire by-the-Lake will be held on May 8 and 9, 2021, from 9 am to 4 pm on the shores of Lake Morton in downtown Lakeland over Mother’s Day weekend.
