CRAWLIN' ON THE CHAIN

Saturday, March 11th from 11am – 11pm • Tanners Lakeside

1006 Lake Howard Dr SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880

Have you ever eaten gator before?

The meat has been described as "chewy" that tastes "like quail or chicken, with a mildly fishy flavor." Regardless of whether or not you ever tried gator, you should try visiting Crawlin’ on the Chain.

Originally started as "Gator Crawl", Crawlin’ on the Chain offers good old-fashioned barbecue with barbecue chicken dinner plates, as well as gator ribs and gumbo. If you've never tried gator before, now would be a good time to try. And if you have, you certainly want to visit.

And what's a barbecue without good music to go with it? Enjoy live performances by local bands and musicians like Spankin' Sadie and Joey Foley. And feel free to bet some money on a 50/50 raffle or lottery hat for a chance to win countless prizes.

Proceeds from the event go towards “Project Eagle”, a local lake clean-up hosted every year around Earth Day by Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful. Proceeds also go towards the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation, a local non-profit organization dedicated to assisting fire rescue personnel and setting up AEDs throughout the community.

Melanie Brown Culpepper, the founder of the Culpepper Cardiac Foundation, has been participating with Crawlin’ on the Chain since its inception. She loves how the fundraiser raises money for good local causes while giving people a good time.

"Everybody gets together, and it is perfect timing with

the weather," she said. "It is about supporting each other. We are doing this for our city with Keep Winter Haven Clean and Beautiful. Conservation and wildlife. I enjoy that part because it is giving everybody information on keeping our lakes clean and beautiful for everybody to go out there and have a great time out on the lakes."

She especially appreciates how the event helps not only raise money for local conservation but also spread the word about conservation efforts to keep our lakes and waterways clean and beautiful.

"Everyone comes together for a great cause," she said. "It keeps growing every year more and more, and we are together to keep our city and lakes looking beautiful. You have to come out and enjoy the gator barbecue, enjoy the day, enjoy the entertainment and music. I am looking forward to seeing everyone there."

CHAIN OF LAKES EGGFEST

Friday, March 31 & Saturday, April 1 • Boys & Girls Club of Winter Haven 2400 Havendale Blvd NW, Winter Haven, FL 33881

Nothing beats cooking a good meal over an open flame on a grill. Actually, that's not true. The only thing better is cooking a meal with a Big Green Egg!

These ceramic domedshaped kamado-style grills cook food through a technique that provides "added flavor and juiciness." Its design provides optimal grilling and roasting, making it, according to its website, "a far superior cooker that is stronger, more durable, and provides better heat insulation than anything else on the market." Best of all, each grill comes with a lifetime warranty.

From traditional burgers and hot dogs to more unconventional grilling options like pizza, eggrolls, and brownies, the Big Green Egg can cook everything and anything. If you want to see, smell, and taste what it can make for yourself, then head on down to the Chain of Lakes Eggfest.

The Chain of Lakes Eggfest hosted by Mannix Pools and Grills is located at the Boys & Girls Club’s Winter Haven facility as a fundraiser. This event brings together Green Egg chefs and aficionados from across the state and country to prepare their best recipes. More than 30 to 40 vendors will be attending this year's event. If sampling their diverse selection of delicacies doesn't inspire you to buy your own Green Egg-well, it most certainly will!

Best of all, Eggfest's $25 ticket on Saturday covers both admission, food and entertainment. That's right. Your admission gives you access to all-you-cansample foods. You pay admission and nothing else.

The VIP Party will be hosted the evening before, with admission at a lowered price of $10. Enjoy music all day Saturday with local bands including Justin Grimes, Hunter Smith, and Oaklee. Beer will be for sell at the event featuring products from Little Bernie Distributors and Grove Roots Brewing Company.

For the past six years, BJ Mannix, owner of Mannix Pools and Grills, has been hosting the event. He owes their success to the overall support of the community, both through participation and sponsorship.

"This year is already shaping up to be the best year yet," he said. "This event keeps growing and growing every year....The community support is what we attribute to the success of this event, the local businesses that help us with sponsorships, and the community coming out to both events and supporting us... It is amazing how far people will travel for this event." Proceeds from this event raise money for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Polk County and Girls, Inc.

ROCKIN’ ON THE CHAIN

Friday, April 21 to Sunday, April 23 • Tanners Lakeside

1006 Lake Howard Dr SW, Winter Haven, FL 33880

What's better than chilling alongside the scenic Chain of Lakes in Winter Haven during a relaxing weekend? How about chilling along the Chain while enjoying great food and music? And all while supporting a great cause?

Rockin’ on the Chain will provide three great days of live musical performances by 26 local bands. Good eats will be served from food trucks on Friday and Saturday, with barbecue platters served on Sunday. Live auctions and raffles will be offering chances to win lots of wonderful prizes donated by local businesses.

Proceeds from the event will go towards local organizations that benefit individuals with autism and other special needs. Two such benefactors will be the Winter Haven Library and the Circle of Friends, who will be constructing an Autism sensory room.

Rockin’ on the Chain was inspired by a former event, Rockin’ on the River, which had previously benefited individuals with autism and other special needs. John Straughn was inspired to create the music event back in 2015, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it had not been hosted over the past three years.

Last year, Straughn was approached by people asking him to host a similar event. He decided to make another one bigger and better -dedicated to three days of live music rather than simply just one! That event has morphed into Rockin’ on the Chain, and it has since picked up momentum.

"What is cool is [that] the musicians, some of them have

autistic children," he explained. "Once they put the word out, we became inundated with people that want to play out of the goodness of of their hearts. It is all local bands."

Straughn has remained motivated by two personal philosophies. First, even if they only raise one dollar more than they already have, they have raised money. And, second, they always make the right decisions for the right reasons.

Straughn himself has a special needs son. Many of the musicians who perform have children with special needs. And the local community has shown their overwhelming support for his events. So, he knows he's making the right decisions for the right reasons.

"We hope it doesn’t rain, but rain or shine, we will have it," he said. "It is a good run event. The money remains local. People are happy to give...It is raising money, [and] it is raising money for the right reasons."

We Need to Be Better Than Good

Stop me if you’ve experienced this scenario before. You had a bad day. Maybe you were late for an appointment. Or you lost something valuable. Or you had a bad fight with a loved one. At worst, someone passed away or you lost your job. Overall, you’re feeling bad. So, someone tries to cheer you up by telling you to, “count your blessings.”

“Buck up!” they tell you. “It’s not all bad. Things could be worst. At least you’re not poor or homeless or dying from cancer. Be grateful for what you have.”

You know they mean well. You know they’re partly right. After all, at least you have your health, your wealth, and your family. Things aren’t worse, so that means things are actually good, right?

life.

And here’s a “radical” proposal: no one, absolutely no one, should be without any of those things. No one should be poor. No one should be h omeless. No one should be dying from preventable diseases. And no one should risk going bankrupt trying to avoid being poor or homeless or sick. Everyone should have their basic needs met, and no one should be without them.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m by no means a “utopian.” I don’t believe in a perfect world. But I do want a world better than what we currently have. And here’s the more radical proposal: we can achieve that better world. We already have the resources and means necessary to ensure everyone has a decent life.

1. GEOGRAPHY: Which river flows through the European capitals of Vienna and Budapest?

2. SCIENCE: At what temperature are Fahrenheit and Celsius equal?

3. TELEVISION: The comedy series “Frasier” is a spinoff of which sitcom?

4. LITERATURE: Which novel features a character named Katniss Everdeen?

5. FOOD & DRINK: What kind of beans are used in falafel?

6. ANIMAL KINGDOM: What is a beaver’s home called?

7. THEATER: Which musical features a character named Tracy Turnblad?

8. MOVIES: Which actress plays the young Wendy Darling in the movie “Hook”?

9. HISTORY: Who invented the game of lacrosse?

10. SCIENCE: What percentage of the world’s population has brown eyes?

We’ve all been there before. Last year felt especially cruddy for me. I experienced financial difficulty. My mother became sick and inevitably passed away. And my best friend broke up with me. I was feeling tired and depressed. So, plenty of people kept telling me the same thing: “Think of the good things in your life.”

But, here’s the thing: I don’t consider those things “good.”

Don’t get me wrong. It’s “good” I’m not homeless or poor or sick or dying. It’s “good” I have a roof over my head, food on my plate, and money in the bank. It’s “good” I’m in good health without any life-threatening illnesses.

All those things are “good”, yes. But they shouldn’t be considered the “best.” Those things should be the bare minimum, or at least they ought to be.

Because, honestly, everyone should have a home. Everyone should have food and money. Everyone should be in good health. These things shouldn’t be considered the “best.” They should be considered what they are: the bare minimum requirements for a decent

Currently, the wealthiest 26 people in the world own as much as the poorest 3.8 billion people. In the United States, there are several times as many vacant homes as there are homeless people. And despite there being enough food produced to feed every person on the planet three times over, nearly 800 million people suffer from hunger and malnutrition worldwide.

So why do we live in a world where some people live in opulent wealth while others live in abject poverty? Where there are more vacant homes than there are homeless people? Where we can feed more than three times the current world population yet so many people starve to death? And where having shelter, food, and healthcare are considered “good” but not “normal”?

We don’t need to settle for “good.” We can do better than “good.” We have the means to be better. The only excuse is that we don’t bother trying. So, let’s start!

• If you have a plastic-bristle broom that is starting to get really ragged and it’s time to replace it, don’t get rid of it. Turn it into a scrub broom. Trim the bristles down to about an inch. You can even cut them at an angle. Then you can use this broom to scrub stubborn spots. The bristles are nice and tight when they are so short.

• Check your windshield wiper blades. Are they smeary? Before you replace them, use a paper towel and rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. They might have life left in them yet!

• Still fire season in your neck of the woods? Most of us know not to burn magazine inserts or anything plastic, but did you know that you CAN add some spice to your fire? Save the peel from your citrus fruits (oranges, tangerines, grapefruit

PEACHES

Meet Peaches! She is a 1 yr and 7 months old Lab mix and is as sweet as her name implies. She enjoys meeting new people, loves everybody especially children and is always ready to play. She does good with other dogs but needs to be in a home with no cats. Peaches will need a fenced in yard to get out all her energy and probably someone who is active.

ARROW

Meet Arrow! Arrow is our 14 year old male Jack Russell Terrier Mix. He is a sweet boy but he does not do well with dogs or cats. Arrow would do best in a home that is calm and relaxed, because of his age he can get stressed out very easily and we want him to be able to live a stress-free life in his new home. He is shy at first but will warm up to you with time.

SQUEAKY

Squeaky is a black and white male Domestic Shorthair mix. He is approximately 3 months old. Squeaky is a calm boy who enjoys spending his time getting cuddles or lounging around the house. He is super sweet and loves to meet new friends whether it is people or other cats.

SPECKLES

Speckles is a white and grey female Domestic Shorthair mix and is approximately 8 years old. She gets along well with adults and older kids but tends to be shy around young children. Speckles can be very playful and enjoys toys such as plastic balls, mouse toys, laser pointers, and fishing wand toys.

Veterinarian of the Month

When Loren Nations graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1981 his dreams of becoming an influential veterinarian in a big city would follow many paths. After graduating from UF with his veterinary degree in 1991 he completed a medical and surgical internship at the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan, NY considered the Johns Hopkins of veterinary medicine. Instead of remaining in New York City he returned home to practice “big city” medicine with his mentor Dr. John Maxwell.

Dr. Nations’ desire to help animals and commitment to practice at the highest level led to specialty board certification in canine and feline practice, one of only 425 ABVP diplomats in the country and 27 in the state. With this expertise, the practice has flourished into a seven doctor 24 hour emergency and critical care hospital, specialty referral center, and general practice. Dr. Nations has devoted his life to creating a center that will improve our pet’s lives for years to come.

The completion of a state-of-the-art 10,000 square foot veterinary center is only the beginning of the medical advancements Dr. Nations hopes to bring to Central Florida. “My life revolves around my family and animals. They are one and the same, that is who I am and why I am so passionate about being a veterinarian.”
