Charm City Seafood If you're craving Maryland-style crab cakes or other seafood specialties, you don't have to drive more than 900 miles up north. You can simply hop on over to Bartow and eat at Charm City Seafood. Whether you're craving a crab cake, grouper sandwich, or shrimp taco, this local eatery has all of the charm of the Charm City of Baltimore right here in Florida. Their best-selling menu item, bar none, is their crab cake, a twist on Florida and Maryland-style recipes. Their grouper sandwich has been rated second for the best sandwich of its kind on the Gulf Coast. "I cannot tell you how many weeks in a row our grouper sandwiches have been second to none," said owner Nik Minadakis. Aside from serving seafood dishes from up north, they also offer the best of good old-fashioned southern barbecue. With their eatery located at the former Curly Tail Barbecue, they continue the legacy of the eatery that came before with brisket egg rolls, barbecue fries, pulled pork sandwiches, and other favorites. Minadakis and his wife Frances have been operating their eatery for the past year and a half in Bartow. They moved from Baltimore, where their father had started the business 48 years ago. Following his passing 18 years ago, Minadakis decided to continue it down here in Florida. He initially started with a few food trucks, which eventually evolved into an eatery, though he still operates one food truck. "I knew that we had not reached our limit where we can reach people with our food trucks, but there were so many people looking for us, and I want to get our product out there...so we can hope we can open up a second and third location as well," Minadakis said. As with many local eateries, especially during these uncertain times, the key to their success these past few years has been with their customers. Their loyalty 6 MARCH 2022

and love for their good food has allowed Charm City Seafood to thrive to the point where another location is being seriously considered. Such commitment is considered almost like a "repeat button" to Minadakis and his staff. "Our customers have been so supportive of us from day one, like COVID doesn't even exist for them," Minadakis said. "[They] will not be disappointed in the products we have to offer. We put love in everything that we do. We put our name on it, so it goes out as something that you are not only are proud to serve, but are not hesitant to eat it, give it the best that we can." Through it all, Minadakis owes his business to his father, the man who started it all up in the real Charm City, and whose legacy he continues to share with this new and thriving location. "Even my kids, I tell them stories about my dad, and what it means when I put my name on it, it is not just my name, it is my dad, so we try to make him proud one crab cake at a time," he said. TOP MENU ITEMS AWARD-WINNING CRAB CAKE 6 oz. jumbo lump crab cake, broiled or fried, brioche, lettuce, tomato, Chesapeake sauce - $23 SUPER GROUPER Brioche, pickles, crab dip, crab meat - $18 MAHI TACOS Grilled Mahi, mango pico, chipotle drizzle - 2 for $9, 3 for $12 330 Old Bartow Eagle Lake Rd, Bartow, FL 33830 863-533-5685 | https://www.charmcityseafood.com/

Ford Family Cafe Did you know there was a cafe inside Bartow Ford? From cheeseburgers and Cubans to southwest chicken salad and shepherd’s pie, whether you're coming in for an oil change or tire rotation, or you're simply in the neighborhood and want to try someplace new, Ford Family Cafe has a little something for everybody. From 7:30 to 10:45 a.m., breakfast is served, whether you prefer a traditional meal of pancakes or waffles, or you prefer something more modern with egg bowls filled with your choice of veggies, meats, and cheese. Try their upcoming waffle bar, where you can help yourself to a fresh-cooked waffle with your choice of toppings. After 10:45 a.m., lunch offers a little bit of anything and everything. Craving cheeseburgers? Theirs are hand-pressed. Or how about Cubans or Buffalo chicken wraps with a side of chips? Perhaps you'd prefer some homemade comfort food like shepherd's pie, fried pork chops, and mashed potatoes? If you crave it, Ford Family Cafe most likely serves it. Their menu changes quarterly with new specials every day, so there's always something new whenever you arrive. And all of their food is made from scratch with nothing set under a heat lamp. What you order is what you get. Just good hot food prepared fresh and served when you order it. Owner Natalynn Bowen has plenty of experience in the restaurant industry. Her family owned two eateries and catering business in Lakeland. After being self-employed in a residential cleaning business, she decided to enter the restaurant business after attending medical assistance school. She was inspired to open her eatery after visiting Bartow Ford for an oil change. She had purchased her third car when she noticed that the cafe inside the show building was sitting empty. She spoke with the owner, and he agreed to allow her to use the space to open her eatery. She opened Ford Family Cafe in 2015. Since then, she has received an influx of customers, not only

from visiting customers but also from throughout the community. Nearly 15 percent of customers are from the quick service lane for appointments for oil changes and other services, she said. She also provides takeout and delivery for local businesses, the regional hospital, and the courthouse. "We have people that come back all the time from the outside who get their oil change and they like it so much that they keep coming back, even though they are not getting their cars fixed," she said. She owes her success to the hometown feel that her eatery provides to her customers. Even though it's located inside a car dealership, Ford Family Cafe serves great food and down-home hospitality that can be expected from any other local-owned restaurant. "We try to be family-like," she said. "I keep stuff on the menu that caters to everybody, and that is a good thing that helps people. I don't try to sell to one person." TOP MENU ITEMS CHEESEBURGER All-American hamburgers made from hand-pressed patties with your choice of toppings and served with fries. CUBAN Ham and pork pressed inside Cuban bread with mustard, pickles, and Swiss cheese. BUFFALO CHICKEN WRAP Fried chicken strips served in Buffalo hot sauce and served inside a wrap with cheese and Ranch dressing. 2800 US-98, Bartow, FL 33830 863-533-0425 | https://www.bartowford.com/

own personal pizza preferences, most everyone can agree that pepperoni pizza is the best kind for everyone to enjoy.

Everything We Can All Agree On “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters...that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.” – 1 Cor. 1:10 As I write this column, Russia has declared war on Ukraine, and Texas has declared war on trans children. I am not in the mood to discuss politics. Chances are, neither are you. So rather on focus on what divides us during these divisive times, I’m using this month’s column to share what unites us regardless of our politics. (I prom-

ise to write a more substantial, well-researched column next month.) 1) Pizza Toppings. People can never agree on pizza toppings—or so they say! But I ask you, when was the last time you visited a pizzeria and your friends spent more than five minutes arguing over what to put on your pizza? At the very least, you all ordered a cheese pizza. At the very most, you ordered pepperoni—because of course you did! Pepperoni is the most popular pizza topping in America. Even if you have your

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

2) Encanto is Muy Bueno! Have you seen Disney’s Encanto? Of course, you have! Because everyone has. Even if you never saw it in theaters, you most likely watched it streaming on Disney Plus. Why else would everyone have “We Don’t Talk About Bruno?” stuck in their heads? Admit it! The moment I mentioned that song, you started hearing it play in your head. It’s that much of an earworm. That’s why it surpassed Frozen’s “Let It Go” on the Billboard charts and became the highest-charting Disney song since Aladdin’s “A Whole New World.” We may not talk about Bruno, but we certainly can’t stop singing about him. 3) Strangers Will Take Our Photos for Us. You would never trust a stranger to look after your purse. You would never trust them to take your keys and park your car. You probably would not even trust them to use your phone for a brief call. But you can ask any random stranger to take

a picture of you or your friends. Not only will they not run away with your camera or phone, but they will gladly take your picture for you. Apparently, we are distrusting of people in every other instance but this. While it would be nice to live in a more trusting society, isn’t it nice that people are at least courteous enough not to swipe your camera, not matter how expensive, when asked to take your photo? 4) Free Soft Drinks. Have you ever frequented an eatery enough times that, the moment you ask for a drink, they simply offer it to you free of charge? That’s happened to me plenty of times. Sometimes I’d go into a fast-food joint, ask for a drink, and they give me a cup for no payment. It’s even happened in gas stations. I go up to the cashier to have them ring me up for gas and a drink, and they simply let me have the drink at no extra charge. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how nice is that?

Rusty Wright

Polk County Musician to be a Counselor at Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp by James Coulter Trying to describe the musical stylings of Rusty Wright and his band is a tricky needle to thread— or rather, a tricky guitar string to tune. He’s a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll, and a little bit blues. One recent show attendee, according to a press release, described his music as a “roller coaster ride that left her breathless but not wanting the ride to end.” To which Rusty replied that “was one of the highest compliments ever paid to us.” Rusty Wright has garnered countless accolades for his music. His 2009 album, “Playin’ With Fire”, became an Amazon #1 bestseller, he has been nominated for various awards including the International Blues Challenge, and he has been inducted into the International Blues Hall of Fame in 2014. He has received accolades from and become acquainted with many big-name musicians including Buddy Guy, Molly Hatchet, and members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Catch their next show on Saturday, March 19th at Tanner's Lakeside. March 10th to 13th, Rusty has the honor of serving as a counselor at the Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp in Deerfield Beach. He'll work alongside Joe Perry from Aerosmith, Vernon Reid from Living Color, and Tico Torres from Bon Jovi to help mentor and teach other musicians. It's great to give back to others that love music while also learning from each other. About the camp: Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp was born out of the desire to give the public the experience of living the life of a Rock Star, with Rock Stars, for a few days, and gaining their knowledge along the way. The idea came to David Fishof after years of producing rock tours throughout the word. He’s been honored to work with veteran rockers, Roger Daltrey, Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, Bill Wyman, Peter Frampton and so many more. David’s desire to share this experience gave him the inspiration to create the one-of- a-kind Rock and Roll Fantasy Camp. Over the past 20 years their campers and counselors have become family. It’s become more than they ever dreamed

of. For more info, www.RockCamp.com We sat down with Rusty Wright, acclaimed blues artist, who’s newest album is set to be released soon, and asked him what makes his guitar tick. He provides some great insight into his music, which his press release describes best as a “hot rod fusing of Texas-style blues, swinging boogie, and southern rock.” Here’s what he had to say: Q: What got you started? A: My mother was a gospel artist in the 1960s. She had a Southern gospel quartet. I was surrounded by music since infancy…My mother tried to deter me from it. She didn’t want me to be a musician. She told me was going to be a doctor or something. Unfortunately, I had the bug and couldn’t get rid of it. She decided that “if I can’t keep you from playing, I will keep an eye on you, and you will play in my backup band.” That was my first gig. Q: What do you love about playing on the road? A: I haven’t been able to get on tour since COVID, but I am hoping that will change now that things are getting back to normal. We have been playing a lot throughout the state. Florida has been pretty open so that has been a big help. The thing that I love about touring is just the opportunity to see new places and meet new people and just experience stuff. It is life, and you want to soak up life before it is over.

Music Festival and I tried out EDM back in 2003. And I soak up everything, and I look at the musicality of it, find my way of playing, that will be little things and pieces about all kind of styles, the thing about my music that makes people most crazy is trying to describe the genre because it is like this and that. I am certainly a bit of a swirling mass of colors and sounds. Q: What is your favorite song? A: “No Man Is An Island” is the one that has touched me the deepest. It was inspired by an article that I read about a family of an autistic child. They were talking about their trepidations, not so much what he is going through… they were worried about was what would happen when they were gone, in his world, his focus was only tenable at that moment when he was facing them. But when he left the room, or turned his head, he was disconnected completley. He was unable to maintain the connections like we regular people do. And he was worried about how he was going to fare in a world like this in that condition. I was amazed at how difficult it must be for her, and how much he must be going through all the time. This little boy he isn’t even aware of those feelings. He

doesn’t even know that he is afraid for him. He is just living moment to moment. He is like that castaway on the island. He is all by himself. It is not fault of his own. But I heard that saying no man is an island. We are all part of this sea of humanity and we are all on the same side. Unfortunately, there are folks who have autism who are not a part of that world, and it is not because of anything they did, it was the circumstances they were born into, and I can’t help the poor guy and his family. It will make folks think about it. Q: What have been your proudest moments? A: I always enjoyed playing for folks. Every time I play, I don’t care if there is five people or 50,000, I have done both. You always get my best show. That is every show every time. I love doing a lot of things, working with Skynyrd is great, that is one of the best nights of my life, seeing folks in Europe and playing for the troops overseas, when we get the armed forces entertainment tours, I have a really great run, I can’t complain, I am the greatest thing you never heard of. Contact Info: FB@RustyWrightBand, RustyWrightBand.com

Q: What do you owe your praise and accolades? A: The thing about me is that I am a tenacious player. I work very, very hard. My mantra…is work harder. It is tongue-in-cheek, but it is my way of saying if there is an obstacle, just work harder, find a way around it, overcome it and move on to the next. I work very hard on my craft, and I am not afraid to dabble in all kinds of stuff. I was at the Electronic EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!
