– Achievement Academy’s 7th Annual “Top Chef of Polk County”. Participating Chefs’ Restaurants After much thought and consideration, Achievement Academy’s Board of Directors has decided to move the “Top Chef of Polk County” event from Monday, April 12th to Monday, May 17th. Due to COVID concerns, the location has changed from the RP Funding Center to participating chefs’ restaurants. This format will allow for a safe environment with only 25 guests per restaurant. We hope you will join us for a night of delicious food and fellowship while raising much-needed funds for children with special needs.

Guests will enjoy a three-course meal that includes their chef’s signature dish accompanied by a wine or libation that complements the dish’s flavors. During the event, there will be an online silent auction. Achievement Academy will ask for each sponsor’s top three chef restaurant choices in hopes we pair you with your preference. A panel of judges will sample each chef’s creation the day of the event to award the “Top Chef of Polk County.” The chef who raises the most funds for Achievement Academy through their donated auction item(s) and online voting will earn the “Top Philanthropic Chef” award. Mon. 6-9 pm. Located at a variety of restaurants; check online for details. Sponsorship opportunities and details are available at www.achievementacademy. com

Ridge Art Association’s Central Park Art Festival Returns to Downtown Winter Haven

O

By Elizabeth Morrisey

ne of Winter Haven’s largest downtown events will be held March 20th and 21st to celebrate fine art presented by Victor Law Group. After having to go virtual last year, the Ridge Art Association’s Central Park Art Festival team is ready to feature Florida artists again. Christy Hemenway, executive director of Ridge Art, says the event has been a fundraiser for the association for 43 years. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with artists from around Central Florida. “We strive (for featuring) quality work,” she says. “It’s not crafts. You can go and get a special piece to hang or jewelry.” This will be Bartow resident Ronald Malone’s first time selling his artwork at the festival. He paints watercolor portraits and his series that will be featured is called Hat Ladies. “This event is well known and well attended,” he said. Malone uses lots of color and really gets to know his subjects by writing down information about each one after interviewing them. “I like focusing on the expressions of people. It’s a way to share my insights and how I see life.” Along with selling his larger pieces, a unique addition will be selling

smaller 8 by 10 paintings for $150. He will take orders from people, take their picture and paint a portrait. Hemenway says the festival will be less than in the past, with about 45 vendors, because some artists weren’t comfortable yet with traveling. But there will be a little bit of everything. From photography to wood work and pottery to oils. “It’s mostly locals from places like St. Petersburg, Lakeland, New Smyrna and other areas,” she explains. Longtime festival participant and Winter Haven resident, Don Stone, is a folk artist and has been painting for 20 years. His artwork is acrylic on wood. “I like to tell stories and I love color,” he says. “It’s mental therapy. I like the interaction with patrons.” This year, Ridge Art is making sure tents are further apart and there will be plenty of hand sanitizing stations due to COVID-19 concerns. There will not be an entertainment tent or kid’s area in an attempt to prevent large gatherings. “It’s outdoors with the sunshine,” she says. “We encourage masks for attendees and volunteers and vendors will be wearing them.” When the COVID scare started in March 2020, the show was canceled and artists were refunded

their money. But because it is the artists’ livelihood, Hemenway wanted to still help them. They put one or two pieces of art on the website with a link to buy directly from the artist. “We’re a community and we need to help each other in these times.” Ridge Art Association has been dedicated to the arts for 71 years. Their mission is to educate and promote understanding of the Visual Arts and to sponsor cultural events within the community. They are located in the Advent Field House by Theatre Winter Haven and host regular exhibits. They also host municipal shows at the Winter Haven airport, Lake Alfred and Winter Haven city halls, Haines City library and Mackay Gardens. “It’s important for people to see art,” Hemenway says. “It enhances life and you can see things in a different way.” Hemenway felt they still needed to have the event this year. “People need something to do and it’s a free event,” adding that there will also be food trucks. “We don’t want them to feel like they have to buy something. They can enjoy it and still have a great day at the park,” she says.

Let’s Meet In Reality, Not The Middle! “Do not be unequally yoked...For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” - 2 Cor. 6:14 (ESV) Y’all watch the Super Bowl? Remember the Bruce Springsteen commercial? The one where he sits in a rural Kansas chapel and laments how “divided” America has become and how we should all “reunite” in “the middle”? “It’s no secret the middle has been a hard place to get to lately,” he tells us. “We just have to remember the very soil we stand on is common ground so we can get there.” (Also, that we should buy a Jeep!) I’ll give the Boss the benefit of the

doubt. I believe he, like everyone else, feels stressed by the political division and unrest that has unfolded these past four years, and that he believes the solution is for everyone to set aside their differences and come together in “the middle.” My question to him is, who, exactly, are we supposed to meet in “the middle”? Is it the armed insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol to overthrow a democratic election because they believed it was rigged against their presidential candidate? Is it Marjorie Taylor Greene, the congresswoman who believes in conspiracy theories like how 9/11 is an “inside job” and wildfires

were started by “Jewish space lasers”? Or is it the anti-vax protesters who shut down Dodger Stadium, preventing people from receiving life-saving medicine, because they believed COVID-19 is a hoax? Since the election, folks like the Boss have called for “unity,” urging Americans to “reach across the aisle” and “heal the divide.” Sure, under normal circumstances, we should set aside our differences and come together for the greater good. But these are not normal circumstances! America is divided. But this division isn’t mere partisanship between left and right. It’s not between liberal and conservative or Democrat and Republican. It’s between people who live in reality and people who don’t. And the solution isn’t to “reunite” in “the middle.” Unity is futile if both sides are heading in opposite directions. Because right now, one side (while imperfect) wants to set real goals for real problems while the other side has veered far off the edge into conspiracy theory, fake news, and bigotry. And right now, that side needs to accept facts that normally wouldn’t be considered “political” or “partisan.” These facts include: • COVID-19 is not a “Chinese hoax”, and wearing masks and taking vaccines will stop it. • Global warming is also not a

“Chinese hoax”, and we need to cooperate with other countries to stop it. • Black lives matter, and we need to pass reform to protect them against police brutality. • Nukes can’t stop hurricanes, bleach injections can’t stop COVID-19, and any scientific-illiterate who believes such nonsense is not fit for political office. • The election wasn’t “rigged”, and Trump lost because more people voted for Biden. • There is no secret cabal of “Satanworshipping pedophiles” who kidnap children to drink their blood, and Trump was not secretly fighting them in the “deep state.” • The devout Catholic who regularly mentions God in his speeches does not want to “ban religion” and “dethrone God.” • The president who wrote the 1994 Crime Bill as a senator, whose vice president was a “tough-on-crime” state attorney general, and whose initial choice for attorney general was a lawyer who declined to prosecute the cop who killed George Floyd, is not trying to “abolish the police.” • Both sides don’t need to meet in “the middle.” One side needs to meet the rest of us in reality. Inductees include Rocky Balboa, Mr. Miyagi and Happy Gilmore. • You’re more likely to be bitten by a human than a shark. • Not that we think you’d actually drink this much, but 10 gallons of carrot juice will kill you. Its vitamin A content is high enough to make your brain swell, along with other nasty symptoms. By the way, you can also overdose on the vitamin by eating a pound of polar bear liver every day. said Cindy Garren, Director of Cultural

Programs at South Florida State College. “What I am excited for is that all of those shows are

very different, they are not the sort of thing you see in Central Florida, they are free, and they are the shows you can bring your grandparents or your children to.” Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, there were no shows hosted last year at the center. Even this year, many big international and Broadway tours have been canceled, and many artists have either canceled or postponed their performances. This year, the center has been more lenient toward scheduling and re-scheduling their shows. If audience members need to cancel, the theater has been more than willing to offer refunds to their customers who pre-ordered their tickets. “We never quite know from one week to the next if an artist may cancel, but with any canceled show, we refund the ticket buyer,” Garren said. To maintain recommended CDC guidelines, their theater, which is ordinarily able to seat up to 1,460 people, has reduced its seating capacity to 400 seats, averaging at least 200 to 250 people per show. Furthermore, special precautions EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

and measures have been enacted to ensure the health and safety of attendees. “We have socially distanced all the seats, so no one is sitting near you,” Garren explained. “The audience is all wearing face masks, all of the staff and crew get temp checks, and we have sanitizer stations all over the building for audience members. We do not have an intermission or a concession stand to minimize movement in the building.” Even with these additional restrictions and guidelines, audience reception has remained positive, and expectations remain high for these upcoming shows. “Where else are you going to go now?” Garren asked. “Most venues aren’t even doing any performances. Most clubs and restaurants don’t have live entertainment, so someone wants to go out for live entertainment for the night, they can come to our venue and know it is as safe as we can make it.” The Alan Jay Wildstein Center for the Performing Arts is located at 600 W College Dr, Avon Park, FL 33825.
