2021 will be a miraculous “do over” for its predecessor. Almost a 2-4-1 year. This year will be jammed packed with all the special days that were missed, events and concerts that were “postponed”. ton issue. In cities and states nationwide, measures were passed banning tear gas, chokeholds, and no-knock warrants, improving police transparency, and requiring police officers to wear body cameras. In Minneapolis, where George Floyd died, the city council even voted to dismantle the city’s police department and replace it with a community-based public safety model. #7: ANTI-LGBT DISCRIMINATION In a vote of 6-3, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that people could not be fired for being gay, lesbian, or transgender. Citing the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the historic decision protects employees from discrimination due to their sex or gender identity.

Good Things In 2020 by James Coulter

Let’s face it: 2020 was not a good year. In fact, calling it a raging dumpster fire would not only be an understatement, it would be an insult to raging dumpster fires! From pandemics to wildfires, to civil unrest and the election, very few things were good about 2020. But that doesn’t mean there wasn’t anything good. In fact, here are 20 good things that happened in 2020:

#1: COVID-19 VACCINE Scientists worldwide worked tirelessly to combat COVID-19. After months of tests and research, a vaccine was developed in record time by the end of the year. (In comparison, the polio vaccine was developed in 18 years!) As of late December, more than 2.1 million Americans have been vaccinated, and hopefully, many more will be vaccinated. #2: ESSENTIAL WORKERS Even with most of the country staying at home, essential workers carried the brunt of maintaining society. From healthcare workers braving the front line of emergency rooms, to 6

every day cashiers and delivery people carrying out routine tasks, these workers braved harsh conditions to ensure the work that needed to be done got done. Especially during these uncertain times, their hard work and effort more than earned them the recognition of Time’s 2020 Person of the Year. #3: HIGHEST U.S. VOTER TURNOUT Despite the pandemic, the 2020 election had the highest voter turnout in modern history. With nearly 161 million people voting this year (almost two-thirds of the eligible voting population), more Americans voted in this election than in any other in 120 years. #4: DIVERSITY IN GOVERNMENT The 2020 election made our government more diverse, with more women, people of color, and LGBT identities voted into office. With Joe Biden’s election, his running mate, Kamala Harris, became the first woman; black and Asian vice president. This year also saw six Native Americans voted into Congress and more than 220 LGBTQ candidates voted into office nationwide, including Sarah McBride, the nation’s first openly transgender state senator. #5: BLACK LIVES MATTER Following the police killing of George Floyd, mass protests arose across the country and world. Millions of people protested for weeks, even months, insisting that “black lives matter” and demanding better police accountability. With nearly 26 million people in America having participated in protests, Black Lives Matter became one of the largest movements in U.S. history. #6: POLICE REFORM In the wake of George Floyd’s death and mass protests, police reform became a hot-but-

#8: SHERIFF JUDD APPOINTED Sheriff Grady Judd was appointed to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, which coordinates federal programs “related to delinquency prevention and missing and exploited children.” Sheriff Judd expressed his “long-standing commitment to protecting children” and his gratitude for being chosen.

#9: SPACE X LAUNCHES ROCKET For the first time since 2011, NASA and Space X conducted the first astronaut launch from U.S. soil when they launched two

American astronauts to the International Space Station. Moreover, the SpaceX Falcon 9 was an American-made rocket, making it the first rocket made and launched in America for the longest time.

have legalized recreational weed. Moreover, Oregon and Washington D.C. have decriminalized psychedelic mushrooms, while Oregon became the first state to decriminalize the possession of all drugs.

#10: “MIRACLE” PANDA BORN In August, a 22-year-old giant panda, Mei Xiang, gave birth to a cub at the Smithsonian’s National Zoo. The mother was the oldest giant panda in the U.S. to give birth. Her child, Xiao Qi Ji (“Little Miracle”), was conceived through artificial insemination, using frozen sperm in the first successful procedure of its kind. #11: 2ND-LARGEST EBOLA OUTBREAK ENDS The COVID-19 crisis may still be raging, but the second-largest Ebola pandemic finally ended. The Kivu outbreak started in the Congo two years ago and went on to kill 2,300 people and infect more than 3,480. Fortunately, thanks to the vaccination of 300,000 people, the World Health Organization announced the end of the outbreak on June 25.

#15: OLDEST HOMO ERECTUS SKULL In an ancient cave in South Africa, the skull fragments from what appeared to be an ancient baboon were discovered. Further investigation revealed the fragments to be that of homo erectus. At 2.2 million years old, it is the oldest remains of man’s earliest ancestors. #16: LESS CARBON EMISSIONS, MORE CLEAN ENERGY With fewer people traveling due to the pandemic, carbon emissions dropped by a whopping 7 percent. The bad news is that emissions are expected to rebound after the pandemic. The good news is that renewable energy capacity is expected to increase. More than half of all new power electricity capacity added globally this year were from solar and wind energy.

#12: GIANT REEF “SKYSCRAPER” A monolithic coral reef tower was discovered off the Australian coast. More than 1,640 feet tall, this underwater coral structure is taller than the Empire State Building and one of the first detached coral reefs of its kind discovered in 120 years. #13: DINOSAUR DNA We’re one step closer to Jurassic Park, as the first hints of dinosaur DNA were uncovered. Scientists identified the remnants of dinosaur genes, including outlines of cells, chromosomes, and nuclei, from fossils more than 70 million years old. #14: T-REX EMBRYOS The largest predator to roam the Earth started life as a Chihuahua, according to fossils discovered of baby tyrannosaurs. The fossils of a foot claw and lower jaw were uncovered in Canada and determined to be from tyrannosaurs in the embryonic stage. EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

#17: AI CANCER DETECTION Earlier this year, Google’s DeepMind AI outperformed six human physicians at detecting breast cancer in the x-ray images of 29,000 women. In another study in July, an AI program could spot prostate cancer on tissue slides with more accuracy than human clinicians, even achieving 98 percent specificity and 97 percent sensitivity.

#19: STREAMING BOOM Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney Plus gained a boost of subscribers due to more people staying at home. Many movies slated for theaters were moved to streaming with big success. “Trolls World Tour” made more in three weeks through on-demand than the original “Trolls” made in theaters.

#20: REAL-LIFE LIGHTSABER Now you can wield your own lightsaber like in Star Wars. A Canadian inventor crafted the world’s first retractable lightsaber. Using propane and oxygen gas, the weapon creates a plasma beam that burns up to 4,000°F, allowing it to cut through anything like a real lightsaber.

#18: DRUGS LEGALIZATION More states have cracked down on the War on Drugs by legalizing marijuana and other substances. As of the 2020 election, 15 states JANUARY 2021 7

They’re Zaney To The Max! With last year being—well, 2020!— and with this month being my birthday (Jan. 26), I’d like to take a brief reprieve from politics as usual and write about something I like. So allow me to gush over a favorite childhood show that recently received a modern reboot: Animaniacs. Animaniacs was one of my favorite cartoons growing up. It was a show I looked forward to watching every day after school. It was arguably the favorite show of many 90s kids, so much so that Hulu recently revived it. So what made Animaniacs so popular? I’m glad you asked! The show’s premise was simple: the Warner Brothers, Yakko and

Wakko, and their sister, Dot, go to different places and annoy people. That’s it! The Warners go somewhere. Hijinks ensue! That was the show’s main appeal. If you were a kid constantly put upon by parents, teachers, and other grown-ups, the Warner siblings were your ultimate power fantasy, having fun at any cost and humiliating overbearing authority figures in the process. Animaniacs was also surprisingly educational. The Warners often visited historical figures like Einstein, Picasso, and Michelangelo. They also performed musical numbers about the planets, senses, U.S. capitals, and—in their most famous song!—the nations

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

of the world. The show educated children without them even realizing it. Despite being for kids, Animaniacs employed smart satire and sharp wit that appealed equally to adults. The characters were modeled similarly to the classic Looney Tunes, and their humor borrowed heavily from Hollywood classics like the Marx Brothers and Jerry Lewis. Also, despite being for kids, the show snuck in the occasional adult joke that somehow passed by the network censors and flew over the heads of its young viewers. In one episode, Michelangelo asks the Warners to help him paint the Sistine Chapel. Yakko responds: “You expect us poor, innocent children to climb dangerous scaffolding and paint naked people all over a church? We’ll do it!” Animaniacs was also unafraid to get political. One episode opened with Saddam Hussein being plunged into the fiery depths of Hell. (The show was that ballsy!) Another involved the Warners getting lost in the woods. Their map tells them, “they have lost their way!” Turns out it wasn’t a map: it was a GOP campaign flyer. “I know!” Wakko replies. “That’s why I said we lost our way...as a country, I mean!” Nearly 20 years after it ended,

Animaniacs was revived with a reboot on Hulu, which also streams the original series. The first of its two seasons premiered in November. So how’s the new show? Eh! Not without its flaws. The art style was modernized from cell animation to digital, making it less fluid and flexible than the original. Also, the ensemble cast of characters has been reduced to only the three Warner siblings and the lab mouse duo, Pinky and the Brain. Otherwise, the new show is just as good as the old with the same fastpaced comedy and clever wit. Like its original incarnation, this kids’ show is unafraid to slip in an adult joke and get political. It unabashedly lampoons real-life public figures like Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, and Wayne LaPierre—the latter of whom is caricatured in an entire episode satirizing gun control, replacing guns with bunnies and ending with an epic anime-style fight scene. It’s just that insane! Both the old and new shows are available on Hulu. Give both of them a watch. Just sit back and relax. You’ll laugh till you collapse. They’re An-iman-ee, totally insane-ee! Here’s the shows namey: An-i-man-i-acs. Those are the facts!

COVID-19 VACCINE Frequently Asked Questions

by James Coulter Now that a COVID-19 vaccine has been developed, almost everyone has questions about it. When will it be available? How much does it cost? Does it have any side effects? Here are a few answers to common questions, with the information provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: When will the vaccine be available in Florida? Earlier this December, Governor Ron DeSantis announced his initial plan to distribute the vaccine in Florida. Approximately 173 hospitals spanning 43 counties are expected to receive 367,000 doses “pending Emergency Use Authorization by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),” according to the Florida Governor’s website. All 67 counties are expected to receive the vaccine by Jan 1., 24

JANUARY 2021

ClickOrlando reports. When and where will the vaccine be available in Polk County? According to the Ledger, the vaccine is expected to be sent to five Polk County hospitals for distribution: Winter Haven Hospital, Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, Bartow Regional Medical Center, and the AdventHealth hospitals in Davenport and Lake Wales. As to when these vaccines will be distributed, the Florida Department of Health in Polk County, as reported by ClickOrlando “has not yet provided its plans.” Who will be able to receive the vaccine? Currently, only three priority groups are being vaccinated in Florida: senior citizens 65 years or older, long-term care facility staff and residents, healthcare workers (including EMTs, paramedics, and Department of Health

staff). When people outside of those groups will be able to receive the vaccine has yet to be determined. How many shots does the vaccine require? With the current form of the vaccine, two shots will be required. The vaccine is administered through two shots, with the second shot given a few weeks later. The first shot starts building protection, and the second shot is required to complete that protection, the CDC explains. How much will it cost? Is it free? Healthcare providers administering the vaccine will receive doses purchased with taxpayer money for free; however, according to the CDC website, these vaccination providers “will be able to charge an administration fee for giving the shot to someone.” Insured

patients can have the fee reimbursed by their public or private insurance, while uninsured patients can be reimbursed by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Provider Relief Fund. Are there any side effects? Patients who receive the vaccine can expect typical side effects expected from a vaccination as the body builds immunity. They can expect minor pain and swelling on the arm where they received their shot, while they may also experience fever, chills, headache, and fatigue. These side effects may affect their ability to perform daily tasks, but should subside within a few days, the CDC reports. Can I still be infected with COVID after taking the vaccine? After receiving the vaccine, the body naturally takes a few weeks to build immunity.

During this time, patients can still become

infected with the virus, so they are recom-

mended to continue taking precautions such as wearing masks, washing hands, and socially distancing until the vaccine takes full effect.

Can I still take the vaccine if I was previ-

ously infected?

Yes. Even if you were previously infected with the virus, you are still eligible to receive it. However, if you are currently infected, the CDC recommends waiting until after your illness has subsided to receive a vaccination.

effective even against new strains and variants of the virus, though further tests are being conducted to ensure efficiency. Does the vaccine contain a microchip or alter your DNA? No. The vaccine does not contain a microchip, nor does it alter your DNA. These are unfounded rumors being peddled by conspiracy theorists. How do I learn more about the vaccine?

Will the vaccine be able to protect against the new virus strain?

To learn more about the COVID-19 vaccine, visit the FAQ on the CDC website at: https:// www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/faq.html

A new variant of the virus has been detected in the U.K. with reports of it in the U.S. However, healthcare experts and researchers have assured that the vaccine will remain
