Polk’s Beloved Bartender feature story started with the very first edition of the magazine and due to its popularity, the voting aspect became a staple component a few years later. Throughout the contest’s history, the magazine has collected more than 40,000 votes from dedicated readers wanting to recognize their favorite hospitality professionals. This contest has quickly become our way of saying “thank you” to the men and women who work hard each day to provide superior customer service. Typically, this popular issue was always featured in July to mark its first edition on the streets of Polk County. Fast forward 16 years to March 2020, no one would have ever thought that our hospitality industry would have been shut down mid-day on a popular holiday that typically packed the bars and restaurants in celebration. Thanks to the coronavirus, COVID-19, the hospitality industry was devastated leaving its employees to struggle with non-employment for an undetermined about of time. This coincided with the same time that our usual voting began. With such uncertainty looming, we decided to continue allowing votes to trickle in as we all learned what the “new normal” would be. As a company, we also had to decide the best way to move forward, transitioning to an online magazine, as well as how to honor an industry in a chaotic time. Deciding to hold off on our Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue was the best outcome. Now, over a year later,

8 OCTOBER 2021

we are finally seeing a ray of light through the clouds. The hospitality industry in slowly making positive grounds, and patrons are feeling more comfortable with getting back to their favorite “watering holes”. It’s been a tough road for all, but we have become a stronger community with a lot of great procedures now implemented to continue with health and safety as a priority. 2021 marks our 17th Anniversary as Polk County’s premiere dining and entertainment magazine and it has been our pleasure to bring so many amazing stories and destinations to our pages. Over the years, our writers followed the careers of rising music stars, watched new businesses thrive and shared their unique perspective on this beautiful community. We are proud to be the publication that weaves entertainment, dining, events and more into a dynamic fabric that is truly vibrant and local! This year, we put a little twist on the Polk’s Beloved Bartenders issue by releasing it during October as the

Halloween Edition. We encourage our readers to get out and explore the wonderful hospitality industry Polk County has to offer and say hello to our winners. Finally, we want to take the time to thank our advertisers, readers and supporters for the wonderful memories and 17 YEARS of continued success. Today & Tonight Magazine is the pulse of Polk County and we are committed to providing Central Florida with the best possible local entertainment and event news. Start the drum roll… Today & Tonight Magazine presents the 17th Annual Polk County Beloved Bartenders Winners…

FRESCOS SOUTHERN KITCHEN & BAR

132 S Kentucky Ave • Lakeland How many years you have worked as a bartender? 8 How long have you worked for this company? I’ve been a part of the Fresco’s family since 2019. What is the secret to your success as a bartender? My secret to bartending is the same thing I apply in all areas of life, and that’s to always stay evolving. Evolve your craft, evolve yourself! Be better than you were yesterday, and always keep heading forward. People appreciate that. Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? Last year everything was flowing and growing seamlessly. Within the blink of an eye, we found our entire world upside down! And, with no end in sight and no answers or solutions to our questions and problems! We were, without warning, shut down and forced to close our doors. Some of us not knowing when or even IF we’d reopen. The reality quickly set in that we had no choice but to file for unemployment which to most of us is something we never imagined. I (and most others) couldn’t even get through the application system for months, with no telling when our next paycheck would be. I’ve never personally felt so helpless, but thankfully our businesses found ways to reopen and not only adjust to the new normal but thrive in it! Completely transformed to make it through, and then there was hope again. With every customer who came, every drink sold, every meal to-go, we got one step closer to normal. It wasn’t easy…We all worked our butts off, but here we all are! 2021 and we made it, we persevered! We still have our HIGHs and we still have our LOWs, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I’m glad I chose to come back to work, I said it before (it would’ve been SO much easier to not come back) it’s still scary, with every new strand of COVID, and no clear end to the chaos; the thought still lingers … will we get shut down again? Will I lose my identity again? But I push those away and am just grateful for our community’s support not just to me, but my fellow industry members. Polk County is special, the support keeps coming! Whatever happens next, I know they have our backs. Thank you, Tina & Tim, for going above and beyond to fight against the odds. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? I’ve never been a fan of high altitude, but I must admit our country has some beautiful secrets! The view from

the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina is unreal! I recommend everyone visit! Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? I can’t wait to visit Edinburgh, Scotland! It’s definitely on my bucket list! It looks like a real life Harry Potter World…and during Covid I might’ve purchased a Lordship Title and a parcel of land in Scotland as well… (royalty looks good on me) I’m technically a “Lady.” What was your favorite toy growing up? I’m going to have to go with the Pink Barbie Corvette from Hot Wheels again. It was a highlight of my younger years… Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? So…Courage comes in many shapes, sizes, and forms. I think this year and half, goes without saying, was especially hard. Getting up every morning and going to work during this Global Pandemic (even when it was SO easy not to) has been courageous of myself and all others. Keeping our businesses open and giving our customers a place to have a reprieve during these difficult times shouldn’t go unnoticed. It isn’t easy, it’s not always fun, but we show up. That’s courageous to me. Thank you all for supporting each and every one of your local businesses, the way we support the individuals in our communities. We’re all in this together. What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Mayonnaise…because it’s mayonnaise. Don’t @ me.

"It's Just A Little Hocus Pocus"

In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? Cliche I know; one of my favorite hobbies is to create cocktails. I spend a lot of my free time scribbling lists of syrups, shrubs, bitters, liqueurs, fruits, herbs, spices, whatever I have at my disposal down into my “cocktail book” (mini journal). I always add or go back to those pages to create new flavor profiles and experiment with seasonal inspirations until it clicks! I get to bring them to life in our monthly cocktail specials, as well as on the menu! Having a creative outlet is a MUST! Besides that, my hobbies consist of planning this dang wedding (12-18-21), decorating our house room by room, and spending QT with my favorite people! My fiancé and my dog! Typical! What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? Jennifer’s Body. Always! I said it last time, it’s SO BAD that it’s good! (Guilty pleasure movie that’s kind of become iconic) I guess Megan Fox is doing a similar movie this year, so it might have some competition! Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? I used to loveeee it! Now, I’m like stay away! - nope! That’s a nerrrrppppp ! I will cry. No Cap! Or whateverrrrr ! As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? I was the Pink Power Ranger like every year, with all the new costumes. So, that was probably my favorite... ok, yes, it’s still my favorite! I always think about being the Pink Ranger again! And going trick or treating with family and friends on the HAYRIDES around the

neighborhood will always be the best. What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? I don’t really have a favorite candy… I like collecting the most candy. Not eating it. Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? Yes! I did a “GOTH” themed Save the Dates and it’s so good, it might be recreated as a Halloween costume this year! If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? Tell everyone I love them a million times, cry, cry some more, then try to do everything on my bucket list. Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. Dog person! Remi is still the apple of my eye! She is the best lap dog ever, even though she’s 90lb! My favorite cuddle buddy, and my best Bravo binge watching partner! I cannot imagine my life without her! She’s turning 3! What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? I cannot pick! From Fall themed Old Fashions, to Candy Apple Mules, to bubbly “witches brew” sparkling cocktails! There’s so many delicious goodies! This year for October you can come get “A Little Hocus Pocus” fix at Fresco’s with our Gin, Violet, & Rosemary potion topped with Prosecco! Is there anything you would like to add? Thank you to all my regulars who’ve become friends, friends who turned into family. I appreciate you and look forward to serving up more drams and spirits for you all. Take back your 2021.

SLATE 8 FAMILY BILLIARDS 20 4th St. SW • Winter Haven

How many years you have worked as a bartender? 22 How long have you worked for this company? 4 years What is the secret to your success as a bartender? The secret to my success as a bartender would have to be my ability to treat people the way I would want to be treated and to recognize their individual wants/ needs. For the most part, anyone can make a drink or pour shots with enough practice. How you treat your customers is what makes the difference. Knowing what best suits each person that I serve is key. Without my customers, who would I tend bar for? Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? 2020 was a challenge to say the least. Unlike a lot of people in the hospitality industry, I was blessed to not be out of work for very long. But that didn’t come without its fair share of challenges. In order to be open for any kind of business meant keeping up with ALL of the CDC, OSHA, WHO, and state requirements/guidelines (all of which seemed to change almost hourly) and making sure we were following those requirements/guidelines at all times. Along with that came the stress of worrying about the health and well-being of my family, my staff and my customers. There was never a day that I wasn’t completely consumed with “COVID worries”. I’m still not sure how I managed all of the craziness without going crazy myself. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? I would have to say Florida. I liked it so much, I moved here. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? Itri, Italy. That’s where my family is originally from and I would love to go visit it someday. What was your favorite toy growing up? I honestly don’t remember having a ‘favorite’ toy

growing up. I do remember my twin sisters and I having an insane amount of Barbie Dolls and Barbie stuff. Aside from the mass number of dolls, we also had the Barbie Mansion, Barbie Cottage, an apartment building with an elevator, cars, a gym, an ice cream parlor (that actually made real ice cream), and a shopping boutique. It was definitely over the top Barbie madness. Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? The most courageous thing I’ve ever done, was deciding to become a mother. Being a mother has tested me in every way possible and has shown me strengths I never knew I had. My kids are my whole world and there’s nothing I wouldn’t do for either of them. What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Caviar. I know it’s considered a delicacy and I know they are unfertilized eggs. Regardless, I cannot get past the thought that I’d be eating a bunch of unborn fish babies. I have no idea where that idea came from, but it’s definitely stuck in my head. In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? LEGO’s!! I love playing with LEGO. I can still remember my dad showing me how to build a LEGO

house when I was a kid...I was hooked. I just finished building a bookstore, which completed my second city block. One day, I hope to have built my own little LEGO town. What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? That’s a tough one. I’m a bit of a horror movie freak...I have LOTS of favorites. “Halloween” would have to be my most favorite though...love Michael Myers! Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? YAAAAASSSS!! I love all things horror related. A few years ago, I went with my dad and twin sisters to visit Waverly Hills Sanitorium in Kentucky. It’s said to be one of the most haunted places in the world. We’re planning on going to the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum next. As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? I don’t have a favorite costume that I remember, but I do remember having costumes with those hard plastic masks with tiny eye and mouth holes. I always ended up taking mine off before we were done trick or treating because I couldn’t see where I was going. What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? Whoppers and Kit-Kats...something about crunchy chocolate. I still love them.

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? I most definitely still dress up for Halloween every year. I have a ridiculous number of costumes. One of my favorites would have to be my Medusa costume. I loved the craziness of the snakes in my hair. If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? What a horrible thought. I honestly have never thought about only having a week left to live but I would imagine I’d spend it with my kids and my family. Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. I am definitely a dog person. I have two Shih Tzu’s, Archer and Abby. They’re my little fur babies. What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? It’s not Halloween inspired, but Barrel 239 makes a traditional sour that I can’t get enough of. I do love my whiskeys and bourbons. My signature cocktail is called a ‘Jack & Jillian’. It’s made with equal parts Jack Daniels, Frangelico, whipped cream vodka, half & half. Is there anything you would like to add? A huge THANK YOU to all of my amazingly, super awesome customers for all the votes. You’re all the bestest kind of people and I’m so thankful for all of you.

What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? “HUSH”. If you do not know, you need to grab the popcorn and a blanket to hide behind, it’s a heart shaker for sure.

2803 Recker Hwy • Winter Haven

Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? Ha! That’s a big negative, BUT I am that weirdo that goes ALL IN for Halloween Horror Nights because I love the adrenaline rush. Yet I walk at the pace of a snail to always check corners before I turn them.

(FORMERLY) APPLE LOUNGE & GRILL How many years you have worked as a bartender? 13 How long have you worked for this company? 9 1/2 What is the secret to your success as a bartender? Bartending is not known as a success to me, it’s known as a passion! So, if I had to describe a secret to my passion, I would say heart. It came with a lot of newly built relationships, regulars that became family. Coworkers that became a second shoulder to lean on. Seeing a face walk into the bar and making their regular drink right away and knowing we are about to chat it up over our weekend adventure. That is what I call passion to bartending which equals success in the industry.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? Oh boy......The Pink Power Ranger, Kimberly Hart. As a favorite memory, well I am competitive, so I had to always have the most candy, even though I gave it away in the end.

rd 3Place

Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? Going straight for the gold on this question. 2020 hit many hospitality industry workers in many different ways. Me for example, I panic. I worry. I remember the day and the moment it happened. It was what I thought was the end, On St. Paddy’s day....no way this is real. Well it was. It went from 2 weeks, to 2 more weeks, to 2 months, to forever....Being an establishment with food gave us a slight hope of survival. At the time, that was all that mattered. We rallied with the community and supported who we could in return. Food became the new Liquor Trend....It kept survival in play for all. As months went on, I made a life changing choice, I transitioned into Management. As logically as it sounded, scary was more the key word. Life as a bartender for me was over....but a new bar chapter was beginning for me in other ways. Needless to say, I have kept moving forward and the transition that petrified me, was the best move decisions of my life

What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? Believe it or not I wasn’t a candy fan. I liked to collect and get the most then I’d gladly give it all away. If I had to have a weakness now it’s an M & M’s cookie ice cream sandwich, just one bite....... Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? I stray far from the participating now a days. I’d rather play it safe or be rattled in a haunted house at Universal.

What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? I have to take it two different routes with this question. First my head goes to Jamaica, nothing is as gorgeous as sitting on that private beach and staring out to crystal blue water with what they say, “literally no care, no worries”. Being the sports fan I am though, going to the Pittsburgh stadium for a baseball game

and watching out at the outfield with the view of the bridge and water as fairies go by....those are my two different worlds of beauty. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? I will cut the readers a break here and keep it simple. Bora Bora or Dibua. I mean, who wouldn’t! What was your favorite toy growing up? As the well-known sports girl that I am, it’s clear it’s a bat and all. Anything I can get outside and get active with basically. Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? Hands down Sky Diving. I am a well-known huge heights chicken if there was ever one. It took a lot

for me, one of my bar regulars actually, an older man named Earl always told me stories how he just enjoyed days alone sitting at the ground of the landing and watching people, as they jumped and landed. One day I grew my courage, I knew he was there, I went and conquered my fear. As I landed, I watched him with his binoculars in shock as to who was landing, as he knew my fears. It lit me up with adrenaline, excitement, and enjoyment.

If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? Wow, I know this is always a common question in many situations, but this year it hits differently. Over my past years being in this Top Ten; I have gone funny, I have gone travel, but now I am simply going real....I want to be happy and fearless to keep moving forward because everyday matters. My community lost an incredible bartender this year to a tragedy and the Brew Hounds Sports Bar crew will forever stay close to my heart (miss you, Amanda). We also lost my former employer, Tim, the bar’s owner, who I viewed as a mentor back over the years; as well as a ‘father figure’ and friend. He taught me a lot, now if only I could look him in the eyes one more time to say “thank you, simply thank you”, because transitioning into my manager role has been the best thing I could have ever hoped for. Without his push that most know he gave me, this new chapter would have never happened. Life has a funny way of cutting the good ones short! We never know when times going to come to an end. So, when this question commonly gets asked, I take a deep breath now and think hard, because if I had a week left, I would indulge full heartily into family and friends and simply spending time with the loved ones and making sure they know how I will remember them and how they will remember me. Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. DOG hands down! By a long shot, my best friend is my pup. I rescued her 10 years ago from the vacant apartment unit after 2 days of her constant barking and finally got in to save her. We became attached ever since.

What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Hot Dogs, need I say more if you know me. Kidding, I like to keep a good laugh going, I would never ever touch beats or liver and onions!!

What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? I can’t confess I have one, I am simple. My signature (as I know I have used in a photo before on here) Orange Crush. It’s my go-to, my sports shot, my simple fun easy-to-make crowd pleaser.

In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? Spare time, people get that? Haha, honestly call me lame, old fashion, or just old. My first go to and thought is relaxing, having a nice whiskey at home and turning on my grill for dinner. (Yeah, I cook too)

Is there anything you would like to add? I just simply want to say Thank You! This whole community had a huge hand over the last 9 years in my life growth and changing roles. Fellow bar partners, fellow coworkers, and especially the knowledge and growth I learned from Tim Leopard & Melinda Ross.

What is the secret to your success as a bartender? Being creative! It’s always fun to make new drinks and shots to see what your guests like. To me, this is the best way to get to know everyone. Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? 2020 was definitely the craziest year of my life. COVID caused a lot of changes for me while being in the hospitality industry this past year but it makes you also appreciate what you have before it’s gone! During these hard times it also really showed how loving and loyal our regulars were to us. Some would tailgate outside of Grillsmith while we were serving to-go only ordering food and drinks to show their love and support :) What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? One of the most beautiful places I have ever visited was Park City, Utah! Although I could never live there, the mountains and snow are beautiful. but I am meant to live by the beach with warm weather. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? The one place in the world that I want to visit is on a little island anywhere in Bora Bora. What was your favorite toy growing up? My favorite toy growing up I think was my Bratz dolls. I used to love to style their hair and give them “haircuts” which basically ended in me chopping their hair all the way off, LOL...Oops!

Every time I see them, I get so grossed out by the way they look, and I can’t seem to bring

In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? In my spare time, I love to spend time with my friends and try out new places and, of course, going shopping. But, my absolute favorite thing to do is travel with my fiancé. Our goal is to visit every state one day!

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? My favorite Halloween costume that I would dress up as almost every year was a witch (Get it? Sabrina the teenage witch, LOL) I had an obsession over that show! My fondest memory of trick or treating would be making my sister walk me and my friends around all over the neighborhood.

What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? My favorite terrible scary movie is all 5 of the “Scary Movie” with Regina Hall and Anna Faris. What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? My favorite Halloween candy to receive as a child would just be anything chocolate and peanut butter. Still to this day that is my favorite kind of candy. Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? I love to dress up! My favorite kind of costume is anything scary or bloody.

If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? If I had one week left to live, I would spend it traveling and doing things that I love with the people I love. Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. Both! I have one cat and two dogs, but I would say I am kind of more of a dog person. I have two female pit bulls named Stella and Bleu. I love all my babies! What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? My signature cocktail that is also my favorite this fall season is a Caramel Apple Martini. It’s made with a salted caramel vodka and apple butter. Come try one! :) Is there anything you would like to add? Thanks so much to everyone who took the time out of their day and voted for me, it really means a lot and I can’t thank you all enough!

and I’m searching the plot online five minutes into the movie, so I don’t get too scared. A lot of scary movies now are demonic in some way and that’s a no for me! One of my favorites though is probably The Strangers with Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman. Two people in a home being terrorized by deranged strangers is too much like real life and will have you looking over your shoulder for days! Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? No. My fiancé can barely walk around the house or walk up to me unsuspecting without me screaming and jumping out of my skin. No Halloween Horror nights for me.

How long have you worked for this company? 2 What is the secret to your success as a bartender? Wow this is a loaded question! I really think it comes down to the fact that I just love people. I love to make people laugh, I love meeting new people, and I love reminiscing with old friends! If we’re together and we’re spending time around each other I just want to make you laugh and I hope that you have a great time. I also have a strong belief in continued education and always learning. In the two years I’ve worked at Mojo Federal my manager Joan has taught me so much about spirits and handcrafted cocktails. I must admit when I first started working at Mojo Federal the whiskey wall was intimidating, but I took it in little by little and my goal is to use the knowledge I have acquired and pass that on to my customers to enhance their experience with the hopes they will continue to come back! Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? 2020 and dealing with COVID was stressful but also the most interesting time in my life. If being worried sick about my loved ones and my daughters wasn’t enough, I was out of work for about 5 weeks. Never in my working career, especially in the hospitality industry had I been without work. I stayed focused on my family though. My three daughters kept me plenty busy with crafts, projects, lots of neighborhood walks, and lazy days spent enjoying our down time. We embraced the down time and celebrated our slowed down life. Then on my birthday, November 28th, my boyfriend asked me to marry him! 2020 started off rocky and uncertain but ended beautiful and with a valuable lesson learned- family is so important and quality time spent together is never wasted. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? I live in the most amazing state, Florida, and every time I watch the sunset in the gulf or down at the Keys, I tell myself “this is the most beautiful thing ever!” Being a Florida girl and loving the beach has made me biased for sure. But 9000 ft atop Mount Lemmon

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? The year I was scary spice from the Spice Girls was definitely my favorite! I had the natural big poufy hair to pull it off and I loved pretending to be a pop star! I loved the way our neighborhood would all gather on our driveways, music was playing, kids were running from door to door collecting and exchanging candy, and the whole neighborhood would just spend the evening having fun! What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? We never got to keep all of our candy! Our dad made us save about a cereal bowl each and the rest of it was given away or taken to my parents’ job. But I always packed my bowl with Reese’s or Skittles.

If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? Spend every last second with my four daughters, my fiancé, my family, and my friends. Through the tears though, I would demand I had a pre funeral, because I hate missing a party. It would be a homegoing party where everyone can come tell me how much the love me and will miss me before the send me on my way! I will not be bartending the party though.

in Tucson Arizona with my oldest daughter is a close second. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? Italy has always been a top destination for me! The Amalfi Coast has been calling my name. I can just hear the waves crashing while I’m sipping Italian coffee at a cafe in a picturesque town situated on a cliff overlooking the amazing Mediterranean landscape. (Yes, I have thoroughly thought this out a time or 12) What was your favorite toy growing up? Anything Barbie! Barbies, Barbie cars, Barbie house, Barbie shoes, Barbie clothes, Barbie anything! Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? That’s a really hard question. I’m not much of a daredevil or an adventurous person, I birthed three daughters all natural, two of them at home, and that was a piece of cake. Many times, throughout my life I have stood up for people who needed it and tried to advocate for those when I felt there was an injustice against them but that is second nature and it was never a hard decision to jump in and help others. So, I would have to say when I decided to get Baptized. For

Autumn Bliss 16 OCTOBER 2021

Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? I’m usually always at work, and if I am working it’s Beetlejuice or something Beetlejuice related. Or something fun and practical I can put together. I think I’ll be a mad scientist this year!

so long I had a desire to get baptized but was nervous I would make mistakes and wouldn’t be “perfect”, so I doubted myself and constantly made excuses. July 23rd, 2016, I made my mind up and stopped making excuses and was baptized and it’s been a blessing that has encouraged one of my daughters thus far to also be baptized! What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Hmmm. I would have to say liver! I can still remember the smell as a child when my granny would make liver and onions and I refused to eat it! A glass of milk and bed for me was just fine because I would not and will never eat liver! In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? What’s spare time? When I’m now working, I’m spending time with my daughters, coaching a junior Bible quiz team, teaching a girls ministry class for seventh graders, out at the soccer field 2 to 3 times a week, studying for my nursing degree, and I like to squeeze exploring and jeeping with my fiancé when we can find the time. I’ll take a beach day, or a day spent at a theme park with my girls ant chance we can get. What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? I used to LOVE scary movies when I was younger, but I just can’t handle them now. Anxiety gets to me

Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. Dog! It’s been a while since we have had a dog in our life but after my wedding next year and our life settles in a bit, my kids will be begging for one and I can’t wait. My daughter did just become a snake mom. She’s the proud owner of a ball python. I am not a fan. What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? I love seasonal cocktails! I’m a whiskey girl but there’s so much fun to be had with fall flavors past pumpkin spice. On our fall craft cocktail menu coming very soon is an amazing drink my manager Joan put together called “Autumn Bliss” A Mojo barrel pick of Woodford Reserve with an apple and pear purée, with hints of maple and fresh sage poured over a king cube has got me in my fall feelings for sure! Is there anything you would like to add? After you get past the smell of fresh smoked barbecue, Mojo has an unforgettable bar! I love the fact that we have happy hour every day of the week! Seven days a week between 3 PM and 7 PM you can enjoy $7 handcrafted cocktails from our menu $6 glasses of wine, $5 well drinks, and $3 draft and $4 craft beers. Not to mention Monday through Thursday after our regular happy hour ends, we have more deals! Monday nights you can enjoy $7 cocktails. Tuesday nights we have rare whiskeys for reduced price of $15. Wednesdays all bottles of wine and a half priced! Thursday nights we have reduced priced beers! Something for everyone no matter when you decide to visit!

1853 East Memorial Blvd. • Lakeland How many years you have worked as a bartender? 6 How long have you worked for this company? 6 What is the secret to your success as a bartender? I try to give everyone the customer service I would like to receive when I go out to a restaurant or a bar. Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? COVID-19 has opened my eyes tremendously due to the hospitality industry being considered a non-essential career. Even almost two years in, we are still being affected by it. As much as I love being a bartender, it may be time for me to start making plans to move towards a more essential career. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. It is beyond beautiful. You can’t beat the views or the generosity of the people there. I wouldn’t mind retiring there. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? I would love to visit Bali. The views, culture, beaches, and the rainforest are just so beautiful. What was your favorite toy growing up? A soccer ball. I played for 18 years growing up. Competitive and for my school year round. I wanted to be a professional soccer player for the USA women’s team when I grew up. That’s how much I loved it.

Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? Sky dive. First time in a plane and I jumped out of it. It was AMAZING! What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Sushi. I’ve tried it and I just can’t.

In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? Adventures with my family. We’ll take a day or two and go to the springs in Florida or camping. Family time is most important to me. What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? I don’t really like scary movies. I have to watch them with a blanket to cover my eyes most of the time. Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? I get scared so easily but I love all things Halloween. So, I’ll still be that one who goes into Haunted Houses even though I hate things that jump out at you. It’s weird I know.

As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? A zombie bride. Every year my parents would make a full day of Halloween festivities. Start by getting ready early followed by church then trick or treating. What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? I loved just getting candy in general as a kid, but it’s always been the sour candy for me. Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year so yes, I still dress up. Mainly for work purposes though. My favorite would have to of been the Black Cherry White Claw outfit last year. I thought it was perfect since I am a bartender. If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? For starters, I would make sure I had everything in

order for after my death regarding my son and fiancé. Then I would take my family and start crossing off my bucket list. One fun adventure after the next. Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. I am definitely a dog person. I have a 7 year old Cure Pit at home named Diamond. She’s like my second child and just as spoiled. What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? The Pumpkin Pie Martinis are delicious and fit right in for Fall. However, my signature cocktail would have to be Margaritas. I, myself, love tequila! Is there anything you would like to add? I’m just so honored to be a part of this great tradition and would like to thank everyone who voted for me. It truly means a lot. Thank you and God bless. XO

5263 Florida Ave S • Lakeland How many years you have worked as a bartender? 7 How long have you worked for this company? 4 What is the secret to your success as a bartender? Being a walking encyclopedia for random shots and drinks. Much faster than secretly “Googling” the recipe in the back. Plus, I am always smiling behind the bar because I definitely do that... Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? I love that people are social distancing now because I was never really a hugger to begin with. What is the most beautiful place you have ever visited? Any of the metal/rock festivals I went to is the most beautiful place for me. To be surrounded by fellow sweaty metal heads and music loud enough to burst my ear drums is a magical feeling. Where is the one place in the world you want to visit? I am too indecisive for these questions. Scotland for the castles and scotch, Italy for the architecture and pasta, Egypt for the pyramids and the history of their ancient civilization... So just send me to one of those places and I’ll be content. Well maybe not Egypt, I don’t do well in the heat.

What was your favorite toy growing up? I played Simon Says a lot because my grandmother told me it would help my memory. Spoiler Alert! It did not and I’m not sure my grandmother ever really told me that. Describe the most courageous thing you have ever done? Becoming a bartender... or having a kid. Those two are pretty close. What is the one food you can never bring yourself to eat and why? Meatloaf. I haven’t had it in 23 years and I just can’t imagine putting myself through that ever again. And

don’t come at me with “well, you never tried mine!”. Nope, no thank you. I have been scarred for life. In your spare time, what do you like to do? What’s your hobby? I am a big fan of sleeping. There is nothing more peaceful in the world than taking a nap and ignoring phone calls and texts. I also love spending time with my daughter. She is a blast to hang out with even though she roasts me harder than anyone I know. What terrible (“B” Movie) or Scary Movie do you love? “Cannibal Holocaust”. I thought that movie was a real documentary for longer than I’d like to admit... Do you like being scared or attending Haunted Houses? Yes and no. I love scary stuff and the theatrics of it all, but I really don’t enjoy being made to go first in a haunted house from my so called “friends”. As a child, what was your favorite Halloween Costume? What was your fondest memory of Trick or Treating? I don’t remember what I dressed up as when I was a

kid, but I did see a picture of me dressed in a Kimono when I was 5. My dad worked in Japan for a couple years and his friend had one in her family and sent it to me. The pictures are so cute. What was your favorite Halloween Candy to receive as a child? How about now as an adult? I was into Reese’s and Turtles as a kid. Now I like pretty much anything besides sour candy and candy corn, I just don’t get how people enjoy them. Do you still like to dress up for Halloween? What’s your favorite costume? Definitely. Pretending to be anyone other than myself is something I enjoy. My favorite costume is a tie between being Beetlejuice and the devil. The makeup was pretty rad! If you were told you only had one week left to live, what would you do? Take out a massive insurance policy and leave it to my kid. Then I’d call out of my shifts so I could go out on a weekend night and experience what that feels like. Most importantly, I would get my ‘sleeve’ finished cause there’s no way I’m spending an eternity in the afterlife with a half-finished ‘sleeve’.

Are you a cat or dog person? Tell us about your pet or any favorite pet from your life. Cat person for sure. They do their own thing and are super chill. I like dogs but between my allergies and their infinite amount of energy I can’t keep up with them. My favorite pet I had was my cat ASH (R.I.P.). He acted like a dog, so I got the best of both worlds with him. What’s your favorite Fall-flavored or Halloween inspired cocktail? What’s your signature cocktail? I don’t particularly have a favorite inspired cocktail because I don’t get out much to try things like this but anything dealing with caramel is my go-to. My signature drink is an Apple Cider Sangria. It contains Caramel Vodka, Pinot Grigio, Apple Cider, Brown Sugar Simple Syrup and some Apple Slices with caramel drizzle. But if you come to Ybor Cigar there will be some other drink specials that are fall themed you can check out because as I said before I am indecisive, so I came up with a list! Is there anything you would like to add? I’m thankful to those who voted me! My customers and regulars have been a blast to serve and I have met some amazing people over the years. Some even turned into more family than just someone I give a drink to and I am grateful. My only wish is for people to stop ordering a “Titos and Vodka” and one day I hope it gets put to an end. Other than that bartending has been a fun ride so far!

We are all family at the Office! Think back to last year, how did 2020 change your life (good or bad)? How has COVID-19 affected you, especially being in the hospitality industry? Candy Corn... Love it or Hate it! Candy corn is a type of small, pentagonal pyramid-shaped candy, typically divided into three sections of different colors, with a waxy texture and a flavor based on honey, sugar, butter, and vanilla. It is a staple candy of the fall season and the Halloween holiday in North America. Candy corn has a reputation for polarizing responses, with articles referring to it as "Halloween's most contentious sweet" that people either "love" or "hate."

Get Lost Columbus Oct. 11 is Columbus Day. Recently, this national holiday has received controversy. Some places have renamed it "Indigenous Peoples' Day." In other places, statues of Columbus have been either torn down or removed. Why is the legacy of this great hero being erased? But, was Columbus really a hero? If so, what made him one worth remembering? "Because he proved the earth was round," some people might reply. But he didn't. People back then already knew the earth was round, as it was proven by the ancient Greeks centuries earlier. Rather, the common misconception was that the earth was larger than it is. Columbus thought the world was smaller, and that people could sail around it in a matter of days, which is what he set to prove during his voyage. Of course, he didn't prove it, as he never sailed around the world. But he did "discover" new lands. "Yes, but he discovered America," some people would rebut. But he didn't. People were already living there. In fact, before European arrival, about 100 million people lived in the Americas. In contrast, Europe at that time only had around 70 million. There were more people living in the Americas than in Europe around the 15th century, according to William Denevan in The Native Population. Even if we ignore the indigenous people already living there, Columbus wasn't the first European to set foot in the Americas. Leif Erikson had traveled to the continent nearly 500 years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue. "But Columbus still explored America," some would insist. But he never set foot in North America. He explored Cuba, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. Even then, he never thought he was in a new continent. He assumed he had reached the East Indies. It wasn't until 1502 that navigator Americo Vespucci realized Columbus had discovered a new con-

tinent. "But he still explored the Americas." Yes, and he slaughtered countless innocent people while doing so. When he reached the islands, nearly 250,000 (a quarter million) Taino people already lived there. Initially, they were friendly and wanted to trade peacefully with him. But Columbus wanted more from them. He wrote in his journal: "They would make fine servants…With fifty men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." Columbus assumed the native people had gold. So he came back on his second voyage with 17 ships and 10,000 men to take it from them. The Oatmeal describes his bloody exploits: "Upon his arrival, he demanded that the [native] people give his men food and gold, and allow them to have sex with their women. When the [natives] refused, Columbus responded by ordering that their ears and noses be cut off, so that the now disfigured offenders could return to their villages and serve as a warning to others." Columbus and his men enslaved and slaughtered the natives, even hunting them for sport and feeding them to the dogs. His crimes were so heinous that he was dragged back to Spain in chains to be tried for his atrocities. By then, his exploits had reduced the native population from a quarter million to only 200 million people, according to the Christian Science Monitor. To recap: Columbus didn't prove the earth was round, and he didn't discover America. The only thing he achieved was the slaughter of the native inhabitants already living there. So, no, renaming his holiday and tearing down statues is not "erasing his legacy." It's acknowledging his "legacy" was never worth celebrating to begin with.
