TID BITS TRACEY’S

By Tracey Greene

Wear Masks Please... Let me start by saying this month’s column is not to scold but to plea with business owners to lead and the community to follow suit. We are going into the sixth month of this pandemic and Florida’s cases are still on an upswing. Why people are so

stubborn and opposed to wearing masks is beyond me. If you’re not sick, a mask can help protect you from those that may be sick. If you’ve possibly been exposed, a mask can protect the spread to others. If you want to resume some sort of normal routine and live your life, then wear a mask. It’s that simple. I get contacted on a weekly basis from friends being out in our community and not feeling safe. This causes them to retreat again to their homes after “testing the waters” of safety. Thus, not spending money in our community to help everyone thrive. I have also experienced this firsthand from grocery stores, to retail stores, to picking up “to go” food orders to being at restaurants sitting outside. Business owners need to lead the charge for community safety and enforce their

employees and patrons to do the same. Picking up a to-go food order from a pizza place recently, of the 5 employees only ONE was wearing his mask correctly, one not at all and three wearing them below their nose or on their chin.

Sitting outside at restaurants, managers and owners either not wearing a mask, wearing it under their face like a necklace or my favorite, wearing it on their wrist like a bracelet. All still holding close face-to-face conversations with patrons and walking around hugging patrons. WTF?!? Sitting on an intimate patio waiting to order food and no wait staff is wearing a mask. Really? Being in a grocery store or gas station clearly in the city limits where masks are mandated, and the signs are clearly posted on the doors for wearing masks (properly) to enter, but yet people stroll in not wearing them almost daring management to approach them. Why are owners so afraid to hold people accountable? Afraid of hurting their feelings? Losing their business? How about them infecting other

EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

patrons, your staff, your vendors? To me, it’s much more than just putting an 8 x 10 piece of paper on the door to enter the business saying that masks are required. Ignorant and stubborn people will just ignore this little sign. It needs to be an in your face, life-size poster: Masks Required for Entrance. Owners need to start refusing service to those that do not follow their rules. We all remember the old signs that used to be posted outside of business doors: No Shirt, No Shoes, NO Service! Masks are no different. Owners and managers also need to follow the rules. Be the leader in your company. You cannot demand that your employees wear masks to work, your patrons wear masks to enter if you do not do the same. Your employees and your patrons will respect you much more for following the rules and caring about everyone’s health and safety. If patrons and business owners would have done their part to follow the rules set forth by our government, they would not have shut down the bars after only 21 days of re-opening. The handful ruined it for the many owners running their businesses correctly: tables spaced out 6 ft apart, staff cleaning routines ramped up, wearing masks, limiting patrons to 50%, etc… Now many of those bars desperate for business have turned to buying the restaurant license to serve food while serving alcohol. But, as before, some of those business owners are doing shady business just to turn a buck…please know that if a bar has started serving food there are many regulations they have to abide by to keep the community safe. An example of this is that they cannot cook food at home and bring it in to sell. They cannot allow smoking inside. They must prepare the food in a separate area following food handling and cleaning protocols. Polk County is closely trailing COVID hot spots from cities Miami, Tampa and Orlando according to the Florida Department of Health, Division of Disease and Health Protection COVID-19 Dashboard. This is ALL of our problem. We must ALL work together to get through this pandemic. How many ways do our government officials and health depart-

ments have to say it? FROM THE FLORIDA HEALTH DEPARTMENT “Residents are advised to wear face coverings if social distancing is not possible. Refrain from gatherings of more than 10 people. Avoid crowds, closed spaces and close contact.” FROM VISIT CENTRAL FLORIDA Be 5weet! In Florida’s Sweetest Spot. What does it take to Be 5weet? When you follow the 5 safety steps, you’re not just doing it for your own safety, you’re doing it to protect everyone in Polk County. 1) Social Distance 2) Mask Up 3) Wash Hands 4) Sick? Stay Home 5) Follow Guidelines It’s all for one and 5 for all. Learn more about how you can help protect our community at: https:// visitcentralflorida.org/health-advisory/ FROM THE CITY OF LAKELAND #MaskUpLKLD, Mask UP to Keep COVID Down. Mask Resolution “This Resolution requiring masks within Lakeland corporate limits shall become effective on July 2, 2020, at 5:00 p.m. and shall expire at 5:00 p.m. on August 3, 2020, unless extended by further action of the City Commission.” (I’m sure it will be extended) FROM THE CITY OF WINTER HAVEN #Required #MaskForOthers. Mask Requirements, “Beginning this evening, Tuesday, July 14 at 5 p.m., face coverings will be required inside the Winter Haven City Limits when unable to social distance from others…” READ more: https://www.mywinterhaven.com/government/ covid-19-impacts-and-updates/?fbclid=IwAR2U87-u8WRf7VZhwE8RNGrl9Fj-EEJckSHXLjckv-uoeAbfHoABvN6WcTM A BIG Thank You to ALL of the business owners and community leaders that wear masks as part of their daily business routines and ensure their employees/staff do the same. Thank you for caring and trying to make the safest environment possible to continue doing business to the best of your ability. #MaskUpPolkCounty AUGUST 2020 5

Polk Museum of Art Announces Call for Central Florida Artists for 'Art of This Moment' Online Exhibition Lakeland, FL (July 28, 2020) – The Polk Museum of Art at Florida Southern College invites artists from across the Central Florida community to submit recent work for its upcoming online exhibition Hindsight 2020: Art of This Moment. In many ways, our collective worlds and everyday existences have shifted and changed dramatically over the first half of 2020. Hindsight 2020 is an exhibition focusing on the diverse spectrum of artistic perspectives, ideas, and reflections upon the past five months of our lives. “This exhibition is an exciting opportunity for the Museum to connect with and showcase talented Central Florida artists,” states

Diane Baires, Administrative Assistant to the Office of the Executive Director, who will be coordinating artist entries. “We hope that Hindsight 2020 highlights how art can be a unifying and healing force, especially in times of great uncertainty and change.” Seeking art produced since March 2020, Hindsight 2020 aims to be a truly contemporary exhibition capturing and documenting our new reality in nearly real time. Accordingly, the Museum seeks high-quality submissions related but not limited to the COVID-19 pandemic, experiences in isolation, social justice, the Black Lives Matter movement, and any other aspect of this novel 21st century moment.

“Art has always provided the most accessible lens through which we can see the history of the world through others’ eyes, and to be certain, 2020 will be a year for the history books,” explained Dr. Alex Rich, Executive Director and Chief Curator. “With Hindsight 2020, we want the Polk Museum of Art to provide a forum for area artists to share their individual responses to this incredible period of momentous change. By examining art made by our community in the past few months of global upheaval, we can all begin to better understand and appreciate the indelible changes 2020 has already had on our world and on ourselves.” Submissions will be accepted

beginning July 31, 2020 at 9 am until August 31, 2020 at 5 pm EDT. Works selected to be part of Hindsight 2020 will be featured as part of the virtual exhibition on the Polk Museum of Art website. Artists may be invited and have the opportunity to share the stories behind their works and be featured on the Museum’s MUSEings blog, as well as on other Museum digital and virtual platforms. This call is open only to artists living in the immediate Central Florida area, including the following counties: Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole, Polk, Hillsborough, and Pinellas. The Museum encourages artists of all ages and skill levels to apply. Artists can submit their work online by visiting https://polkmuseumofart.org/hindsight2020. For any additional questions or information, please contact Diane Baires at dbaires@polkmuseumofart.org or 863-688-7743 ex. 248, or Taylor Holycross at tholycross@ polkmuseumofart.org or 863-6887743 ex. 249.

WINTER HAVEN BOXING CLUB by James Coulter For eight years, Marco Fazzini has been training many up-and-coming boxers at Winter Haven Boxing Club, taking them to elite boxing championships, and returning home with them and their medals, belts and other awards. To date, Fazzini has trained two USA national champions, 20 state champions, multiple regional champions, and multiple Sugar Bert Boxing national champions. So many of his students have won so many awards that he hardly keeps track of them all. Fazzini himself was inspired by his father to take up boxing in 1992. Fazzini started training at a local gym in Winter Haven. The more he trained, the more he realized that he made a better trainer than a fighter. Eight years ago, he opened up his gym along Avenue G NW in Winter Haven. He has since taken so many students under his wings that he has moved to a larger facility down the road. Recently, two of his students have earned prestigious titles. DeVine Eraso, 15, won a gold medal two months ago at the Eastern Qualifiers, ranking #1 in the country two years standing. Abdin Lopez, 13, won nationals in November in Kissimmee, ranking #1 in the

country in the Sugar Bert Boxing rankings. Fazzini and his two students recently sat down to answer some questions about their achievements. Here’s what they had to say:

8

AUGUST 2020

WHAT GOT YOU STARTED WITH BOXING? My great-grandfather was a prizefighter. My boxing career was not that great. I was more of a knucklehead who stayed in the gym than home. That is another reason I push these kids harder, because I want them to do more, because I really did not do much in the boxing world. So I have always been around it [boxing] all my life. So I am really hard on the kids because I want them to become champions. Being a trainer is what I realized what I wanted to do. I just make sure that they are putting hard work at the gym and eating right, doing right, respecting their parents, and learning the true art of boxing.

WHAT DO YOU OWE THE SUCCESS TO YOUR CAREER AND THE GYM? The consistency. It is hard to find a fulltime coach, and it is hard to find a fulltime fighter. So when you find those two things combined, something special usually happens, and of course, passing down them the right information so I can pass it on to the next generation. WHAT IS A NORMAL FITNESS AND TRAINING REGIME FOR YOUR STUDENTS? When they come in, they do four rounds of jump rope (15 minutes), they shadowbox for another 15 minutes, they hit bags for 30 minutes, they will do Mitts with me for four rounds or eight rounds, and they have a list of calisthenics that they have to complete before they leave the gym.

FIND US ON FACEBOOK AND WWW.TODAYANDTONIGHT.COM

B

WHAT IS THE KEY TO YOUR STUDENT’S SUCCESS? I think the secret is the people that I grew up within boxing: Jack Lenord, my dad, John Fazzini, and of course, Tony Morgan, getting passed from them the right information so I can pass it on to the right person. WHAT DOES THIS NEW GYM HAVE TO OFFER? The gym has a lot more space to offer. We are busier, and it provides more room for them [my students] to develop and do their calisthenics. It has been a real blessing that the City of Winter Haven and the residents have backed us and supported us.

WHAT DO YOU GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRAINING WITH YOUR STUDENTS? When they come in and they know nothing…they learn the skill set, and they blossom into something special. And then, of course, for me, when they win national titles and we see the excitement on their faces. That is always a joy that they never forget. WHAT REASON WOULD YOU GIVE OTHERS TO START BOXING? I think right now, it is a good time for anyone to learn self-defense. The world is a crazy place and this is a place where they have an outlet, and they get to learn how to defend themselves, which is really important.

WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MOVING FORWARD? To keep developing fighters. I have a couple of hopefuls for the 2024 Olympic team. Hopefully, they can go, make a good living for themselves, and learn respect and self-discipline. ANY FINAL COMMENTS? A big thank you to the City of Winter Haven for always supporting and sponsoring our kids, and just to continue keeping it up because you are making dreams come true. Winter Haven Boxing Club is located at 2510 Avenue G NW, Winter Haven, FL, 33880. For more information, visit their Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/winterhavenboxing

ABDIN LOPEZ, 13

DEVINE ERASO, 15

Abin’s father was a big fan of boxing who wanted his son to become a boxer. That desire allowed Abdin to join the gym five years ago, and he’s made much progress since then. Abdin loves to box. That love allowed him to remain dedicated to the gym and his training under Marco over the past half-decade. When asked if he faced any major challenges or obstacles during his training, Abdin couldn’t think of a single thing. During his time at the gym, Abdin has won three belts and ten medals. Recently, he won at Punta Gorda and he won nationals at Sugar Bert. By far, the most important thing he has gained, more so than any medal or belt, has been his skills. The discipline he has gained training day-in and day-out, training any time he can over the past five years, has more than paid off for him. “I owe my success to my coach and my parents, they allowed me to gain my skills,” Abdin said. “It is a very good club. You will learn a lot of boxing skills plus I like going on vacation to attend diiferent championships. EXPECT MORE... GET MORE... WE DELIVER!

DeVine started training at the Winter Haven Boxing Club about eight to nine years ago. He started training with his father, who saw enough potential in him to find a trainer. Their search led them both to the gym and Marco. “He found the best gym out here, the best coach out here, and we have made the best of the best and became number one in the world,” DeVine said. Under his tutelage with Marco, DeVine has visited many championships and walked away with many awards: two Sugar Bert belts, a Junior Olympics medal, a Kansas City belt, and countless title belts, gold medals, silver medal, and plates. Devine owes his success to his father and his coach pushing him. He hopes to win the 2024 Olympic gold medal, become a pro, and fight the best fighters. As long as he keeps pushing himself, he expects to do just that. “There are times where I don’t feel like going to the gym, but I know I have to go, and I have to work hard every day,” he said. “As long as I have my dad pushing me by my side, that is all that 9 AUGUST 2020 matters. I work hard and do what is right.”

RIGHTFULLY HERS ONOMATOPOEIA

EXHIBIT

Lakeland Chamber of Commerce will host a new popup exhibit from the National Archives

Lakeland, FL - On September 24, the Lakeland Chamber of Commerce will host a new popup exhibit from the National Archives at the Chamber’s annual ATHENA Awards. Prior to the event, the popup exhibit can be viewed in the Chamber lobby beginning July 27, 2020, until the end of the year. Rightfully Hers, commemorates the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the19th Amendment. Rightfully Hers contains simple messages exploring the history of the ratification of the 19th amendment, women’s voting rights before and after the 19th, and its impact today. Despite decades of marches, petitions, and public debate to enshrine a woman’s right to vote in the constitution, the 19th Amendment—while an enormous milestone—did not grant voting rights for all. The challenges of its passage reverberate to the ongoing fight for gender equity today. Rightfully Hers co-curator Jennifer N. Johnson states: “The ratification of the 19th Amendment was a landmark moment in American history that dramatically changed the electorate, and although it enshrined in the U.S. Constitution fuller citizenship for women many remained unable to vote.” Rightfully Hers is organized by the National Archives and Records Administration. In celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, the National Archives has launched a nationwide initiative and major exhibition that explores the generations-long fight for universal woman suffrage. The exhibition is presented in part by the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission and the National Archives Foundation through the generous support of Unilever, Pivotal Ventures, Carl M. Freeman

Foundation in honor of Virginia Allen Freeman, AARP, and Denise Gwyn Ferguson. The ATHENA Awards were founded in Lansing, Michigan in 1982. Since then, more than 7,000 top leaders in more than 500 communities have received awards in nine different countries. The awards actively advocate and celebrate the ATHENA mission of supporting, developing, and honoring women leaders, inspiring women to achieve their full potential creating balance in leadership worldwide. The ATHENA Awards honors women who strive toward the highest levels of personal and professional accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field, devote time and energy to their community in a meaningful way, and forge paths of leadership for other women to follow. Cops Don't Need To Do Everything Several years ago, I had the honor of listening to Sheriff Grady Judd speak at an important luncheon. He said his responsibility to protect and serve his community involved not only keeping people safe from crime, but also ensuring their basic needs were met. Whenever his deputies visited someone’s home, especially if it was a poor household with children, they were instructed to check the pantry for food and fridge for milk. If both were empty, the deputies were to ensure both were filled. “We are not interested in catching bad guys…until we get the ample resources to the family to make sure those children can eat and that family

can prosper,” Sheriff Judd said. While Sheriff Judd’s intentions are noble, should the cops really be responsible for making sure poor children don’t go to bed hungry? Shouldn’t that be the responsibility of other public servants? Like social workers? Since the killing of George Floyd and the ongoing protests against police brutality, many Americans have been questioning the role of police in society. Some have even called for the police to be “abolished” or “defunded.” Most people don’t want to get rid of cops entirely or to cut their budgets to zero. They simply want to shift some responsibilities of law enforcement to other services and

to reallocate funding towards those services. The cops are good at stopping violent crime, but more often than not, they are called to non-violent emergencies. Why do we call them to deal with the homeless? Or people suffering from mental health issues? Or unruly students at school? More often than not, sending armed cops to these situations unnecessarily escalates violence. What if instead of armed cops responding to emergencies such as mental health crises, homelessness, and substance abuse, these calls were answered by people properly trained to handle them? Fortunately, one small town in Oregon has successfully done that for more than 30 years! In 1989, the City of Eugene, Oregon, through a partnership between the city police department and a local health care clinic, started a crisis response program called CAHOOTS (Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets). The program sends a small team of medics and mental health counselors to respond to calls involving substance abuse and addiction, homelessness, mental health, and suicidal tendencies. According to CNN, CAHOOTS operates like this: “911 dispatchers filter calls they receive -- if they’re violent or criminal, they’re sent to

police. If they’re within CAHOOTS’ purview, the van-bound staff will take the call. They prep what equipment they’ll need, drive to the scene and go from there.” What started as a small van transporting a handful of medics and mental health workers has since grown to more than “three vans” and “more than double the number of staffers”, CNN reported. Last year, CAHOOTS responded to 24,000 calls, or “about 20% of total dispatches”, with only 150 of those calls requiring police backup, CNN reported. The program has since proven successful. CAHOOTS not only de-escalates otherwise dangerous situations, but saves the city taxpayer money—”about $8.5 million in public safety costs every year, plus another $14 million in ambulance trips and ER costs,” CNN reported. Many other cities nationwide have since taken notice and asked CAHOOTS to help them set up similar crisis response programs. These cities include Olympia, Denver, Oakland, New York City, Portland, Indianapolis, Austin, and Chicago. Who knows? Perhaps Winter Haven or Lakeland can implement a similar program. Let Sheriff Grady Judd stop the bad guys, and let a program like CAHOOTS help everyone else.
