Is It True That To Be Fair, You Have To Have A High IQ To Be Successful?

Have you ever heard the saying: to be fair, you have to have a high IQ to be successful?

People sometimes use this phrase in the context of understanding certain idea or concepts. There’s no denying that having a powerful mind will help you succeed in certain areas of your life.

But is intellect necessary to be a fair and honest person? It’s an intriguing question. And that’s what we’re going to explore.

Do You Really Need A High IQ To Be Successful?

Is it necessary to have a high IQ to perform certain tasks? How about to understand abstract ideas?

“To be fair, you have to have a high IQ to be successful.”

But how true is this statement?

Back when the first IQ tests were formulated, IQ was the yardstick for success.

Based on Charles Spearman’s theory of generalized intelligence, IQ tests measured your ability to apply logic and deductive reasoning.

But here’s the thing: intelligence isn’t what we once thought it was.

Back in 1904, English psychologist Charles Spearman formulated his hypothesis on generalized intelligence. Also called the “g factor,’ generalized intelligence was an individual’s mental capacity to perform certain tasks.

Today, intelligence as we understand it is very different. And here’s why.

How Our Understanding Of Intelligence Has Changed What is intelligence? It’s a difficult question to answer. We have multiple competing theories of intelligence today that have entirely changed the way we view intellect.

In 2003, American psychologist Robert Sternberg proposed the triarchic theory of intelligence. In this theory, there are three main forms of human intelligence: practical intelligence, creative intelligence, and analytical intelligence.

And some other theories suggest we may actually possess up to nine different types of intelligence.

Developmental psychologist Howard Gardner believes human intelligence is a flexible, adaptive tool. And he explains that we all possess multiple forms of intelligence.

So, is a high IQ really all that important in the grand scheme of things? Well, that all depends on how you choose to view human intelligence.

Is It Possible To Raise Your IQ? It’s important to recognize that the traditional IQ tests are limited in what they can measure. Today, we recognize many forms of intelligence, and IQ tests are capable of measuring only a few.

That said, there are ways in which you can improve your IQ score. And what it really all boils down to challenging your brain by learning new things.

And really, this is quite a healthy avenue for us to take. Learning shouldn’t stop when we leave school. We should remain on a quest to be lifelong learners.
