Issue # 4

NEWSLETTER April - June 2014 In this Issue:

A Message From Our President,

John Lepkowicz

Fellow Naples Toastmasters, This year has just been zipping along and I can’t believe that spring is here. We will be getting to that point in the year where we’ll have to start thinking of who will be our new officers for the upcoming year. If you know someone who would be an excellent candidate or you would like to nominate yourself, please submit a name. We will begin to nominate candidates in May so the new officers may begin their new roles in June. This year will be the 5th Italian Toastmaster’s Conference will be held in Rome from June 27th to the 29th. It will be a great opportunity for the club to present ourselves as we become part of the district and to network with other Toastmasters from other parts of the world. Reservations for the conference can be made on the website. For more information, go to website: http://www.toastmastersitaly.org/tmitaconf/index.php/en/.

Purpose of a vision statement The purpose of a vision statement is to provide a general direction for an organization. It does not address details.

Characteristics of a vision statement Vision statements are:      

Clear. They are easily understandable Challenging. They impart lofty but achievable goals General. They don’t address specifics. People-oriented. They are not based upon self-interest. Instead, vision statements focus on how people will interact with one another and better serve clients or customers. Inspiring. Team members find the vision exciting and noble. They want to help achieve it. Easily communicated. They are simple to explain.

Crafting a vision Creating a vision statement is an opportunity to consider where an organization should be in 5, 10 or 20 years. The statement need not be lengthy or complicated. Answer the following questions to help develop a vision statement:     

What does the organization do well? What is the most important thing the organization wants to do? What makes the organization unique or special? What does the team expect from the organization? What makes the team feel good about the organization?

Communicating a vision Leaders are responsible for communicating their vision clearly and in terms the team can understand. The team must comprehend:   

The relationship of the vision to daily activities Their role in the vision How to support it

A vision is evolutionary. If an organization is to survive and grow, it will periodically need to update its vision. Changes can be swift and unexpected – opportunities arise, new technologies are developed. A leader that knows where an organization is going will be able to spot opportunities, use them, and benefit.

Why did I join Toastmasters by Denise Greene Member The reason that I joined TM's was to learn how to be a better speaker in front of not just large crowds, but people in general. I get so nervous when I have to speak to people, because I always feel that I am going to mess up or questions are going to come that I don't have the answers to. Through TM I found that it is okay to be critiqued and find out what things that I can work on to make myself a better speaker. I have only given my first speech so far, and to be honest, it wasn’t as bad as I thought but there is still work to do. I love going to TM's. It seems like my only adult conversation throughout the day.
