TO Live would like to acknowledge Tkaronto, which is a Mohawk word meaning the place in the water where the trees are standing.

We live and work on the traditional territory of Haudenosaunee-speaking nations, including the Huron-Wendat, Seneca, and Mohawk. Haudenosauneespeaking nations have been here since time immemorial, and were more recently joined by the Mississaugas of the Credit.

This place has many Indigenous ports, including where the Humber and Rouge rivers meet other waterways such as Lake Ontario. Ancient longhouses— typical Haudenosaunee housing structures—have been found along both these rivers and in the north of Toronto near modern-day York University. This territory is covered by the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee (Six Nations) Confederacy and the Anishnaabe (Ojibwe) and allied nations to peaceably share and care for the lands and the relationships around the Great Lakes.

What this means is that by living and working here, we all have a responsibility to the environment and to each other, to treat each other and the environment with peace and respect. This means we have responsibilities to honour, renew, and consistently uphold the values and relationships outlined in the ancient agreements.

Today, Toronto is home to Indigenous peoples and settlers from around the world. Let us all come together in an atmosphere of respect and peace to do good work together with good minds. Let’s start building stronger and healthier relationships with each other and the spaces we inhabit in Tkaronto, Ontari:io, Kanata.

Welcome Letter from TO Live and Fall for Dance North

Welcome to Leaside Memorial Community Gardens and tonight’s performance of Murmuration from Montréal-based Le Patin Libre (“the free skate,” in French), the world’s first contemporary ice-skating collective.

Pushing the boundaries of what is possible on ice, Le Patin Libre combines the athletic virtuosity of competitive figure skating with the expressive free movements and improvisation of contemporary dance.

From early performances presented on frozen ponds, Le Patin Libre has evolved into an acclaimed contemporary skating company that counts international presenters such as the U.K.’s Dance Umbrella and France’s Théâtre de la Ville as champions for this new performing art form. Blending speed, precision, and intricate choreography, their first two shows, Vertical Influences and Threshold, have toured the world to great acclaim.

Since 2015, TO Live and Fall For Dance North have been working together on the noble goal to “whet Toronto’s dance appetite and inspire audiences to seek out more dance throughout the year.” At both FFDN and TO Live, we are committed to fostering the ideas and creativity that connect communities and reflect Toronto, partnering with local artists and companies to present a variety of distinctive works. In pursuit of our shared goal, TO Live and Fall for Dance North are proud to once again partner to bring this unique dance experience to Toronto.

About Murmuration

This unique event features ice-mavericks combining the athletic virtuosity of competitive figure skaters, the choreographic intelligence of contemporary dancers, and the physical instinct for flocking. They’ll join three of Le Patin Libre’s founding artists and choreographers for a total of 15 performers on ice, who will together use the flocking metaphor to ask big questions: why do we gather? Why do we split? Why do we polarize? Why is our collective behaviour sometimes so baffling?

Murmuration. This is how ornithologists call the mesmerizing aerial ballets of swarms of birds. The grounded flight of glide, the fluid speed of our ice skates, and the sheer immensity of a frozen stage allows us to bring this phenomenon to the performing arts for the very first time.

This show explores how humans get together: as instinctive creatures, as variables of algorithms (that’s what flocks are…), as cogs in machines, and, sometimes, as achieved individuals.

About Le Patin Libre

Le Patin Libre is a contemporary ice-skating company from Montreal. Some people see their work as a form of “contemporary dance on ice.” The first collective was founded in 2005 by ex-high-level figure skaters. They regrouped with the intention of transforming their athleticism into a means of free expression. Far from sparkles, stereotypes, and champions’ demos, the creations of Le Patin Libre propose real works of art exploiting the amazing choreographic and theatrical potential of glide.

Artistic approach

Since 2005 and their first demonstrations on frozen ponds, Le Patin Libre has evolved a lot. What started as a little spontaneous explosion is now refined into an intelligent artistic project. The new skating style slowly became a new performance art form in its own right. At the base of their work, there is one great question: “what is skating?” Until now, their research projects always bring us back to the same thing: glide. Glide is the possibility to imprint movement on immobile bodies. It is the uniqueness of their dance. It is the magic they play with, until it becomes a vertigo, for their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of their public.

Le Patin Libre means “The Free Skate.” We are a Montrealbased contemporary skating company whose founders come from figure skating. Since 2005, we've been reappropriating our athletic virtuosity to turn it into a choreographic medium full of creativity and...freedom! We seek beauty in the deeper nature of skating.

To create Le Patin Libre, it took us years to bring together a team of skating-artists who were both virtuoso and capable of carrying this artistic project. They come from Quebec, Ontario, British Columbia, France, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Czech Republic. The makeup is so international because it is difficult to find accomplices for this type of work. Most trained figure skaters prefer a more acrobatic vocabulary or a more traditional form and make a very good living with it. We needed iconoclasts, creatives, real “mavericks.” We organized auditions in six countries to find them.

Murmuration arrives at a time when our technique and choreographic approach are better mastered than ever. We are obsessed with murmurations, these aerial ballets of large flocks of birds. Their shapes are full of mind-blowing beauty and absolute mathematical perfection. They suggest poignant reflections on togetherness. We have known for a long time that because of their fluidity, our trajectories on ice are close to those of birds and could allow us to create a true human and choreographic version of this natural phenomenon. The Murmuration project allows us to bring together a large ensemble and finally make Murmuration our own through skating. By embodying it in a show, we have the opportunity to offer important reflections on harmony, aggression, war, and peace.

Researchers have partly unlocked the secret of the extremely complex grouped movements of birds and fish. They are organized by algorithms, or sets of simple rules applied by each bird in order to flock. In preparation for the show, we spoke with professor Adrian Vetta of McGill University in Montreal. He is a mathematician and specialist in distributed algorithms. Certain parts of our choreography were therefore created using algorithms. We also consulted an ornithologist who also spoke to us about algorithms.

At the basis of several parts of the show there is an algorithm. The show begins with the one who organizes the flocks of starlings and schools of fish. We manipulated it by integrating normally choreographed elements and disturbing elements that disobey the algorithm. Then we invented our own algorithms that coexist with very rigorously choreographed segments. Contrasts and juxtapositions allow us to ask big questions: what happens when the whole becomes polarized? When there are two groups rather than one? When there is one person who no longer wants to follow the rules?

Alexandre Hamel was first trained as a figure skater. He competed on the international circuit, was once on the Canadian championships podium, and accumulated a few provincial champion titles. He then skated professionally for Disney On Ice. He founded Le Patin Libre in 2005 and still directs the company, while staying as involved as always with performance and creation. He is very committed to the importance of creating depolarizing cultural experiences gathering general audiences with art aficionados. Hamel is also a filmmaker; his documentaries winning awards and being presented in international film festivals.

Pascale Jodoin was also first trained as a traditional figure skater. She avoided a large part of the formatting imposed on young figure skating ladies because of her free-spirited attitude. She joined Le Patin Libre in 2009 after seeing a performance, auditioning, participating in workshops offered by the founding artists, and dancing in underground ice parties organized by the collective. Above her implication as a creator and a performer, she manages a large part of the activities of the company. Before being completely mobilized by Le Patin Libre, she also ran a small jewellery business and performed as a circus artist in Montreal.

Samory Ba is the only founding member of our company who is not Canadian. He was born in France, near Paris, and trained there as a traditional figure skater. After performing for various ice shows, including Holiday On Ice, he quit the industry and a very well-paid position to take a huge gamble: joining Le Patin Libre, as the collective was still precarious. He is now an important part of their creation team and a fully involved performer. He also organizes many of their tours.

Jasmin Boivin Composer, musical director, choreographer, skating-artist

Le Patin Libre first hired Jasmin in 2008 as a technician. Being a cellist and electro-acoustic composer, he quickly began creating their soundtracks. In 2011, during a creation residency with the company, he began to develop his own style of ice dance, combining his skills as an amateur hockey player and his interest in social and urban dances. Surprising their choreographers with an unusual style, he was included in the shows Vertical Influences (2014) and Threshold (2018) as a skating-artist. He also composed the soundtracks of these shows, developing a musicality giving an important place to the sounds emitted by the blades during the performances. Jasmin composed the music for Murmuration with another Montreal composer, Philippe Le Bon. He still tours with the company. For Murmuration, he acts as sound and lighting console operator.

David Billiau Soloist

David plays an important role as a member of the ballet and as a soloist in Murmuration. He is the only performer in Murmuration who was not trained as a figure skater. He's a self-taught skater. He is to figure skaters what urban dancers are to ballerinas. He trains more than any skater in the collective. With his hockey skates, he is easy to spot. Le Patin Libre spotted him on a public skating session in France where they were giving community workshops. Le Patin Libre had never seen someone skating like that. They played with him, danced with him, and convinced him to audition. He had to travel to Netherlands to take part in their next audition. At the world premiere in Paris, in June 2022, it was his first public performance, and he did great. His self-taught style and virtuosity allow him to be a striking and touching symbol in the show. He combines power with vulnerability. Between tours, he is an independent car mechanic in a small alpine village.

The ballet

Murmuration gathers 14 very highly trained ice-skaters. Three of them are the choreographers: Hamel, Jodoin, and Ba. They have special roles as soloists. With them, the 13 new skaters of Le Patin Libre form the first-ever professional contemporary ice-skating ballet. It gathers people from France, the U.K., U.S.A., Canada, Czech Republic, Sweden, and Norway. Le Patin Libre organized many auditions in many countries to find them. They were looking for mavericks combining athletic virtuosity with a free spirit, a taste for adventure, and a that special spark of intuitive intelligence which makes some performers special. All of them skated with the company for two to four years before taking part in performances of Murmuration. It's not only about performing a show...they unlearned to skate and relearned to skate, mastering the special technique that allows Le Patin Libre to look so different from figure skating. They collectively became a unified many-headed body able to behave like a swarm. Le Patin Libre is more than a professional company. It's a touring family gathering people who often lived difficult experiences in the world of figure skating. Together, their skating-artists often learn how to love ice skating, again.

Jacqueline is a contemporary skating artist, choreographer, and dancer based in Phoenix, Arizona. An award-winning performer, she has been skating with contemporary skating group Le Patin Libre since 2021. Read on to learn more about one of the cast members in Murmuration!

What led you to become an artist?

I believe that everyone is an artist. There is art in how we talk to each other, how we move through the world, and how we just exist. I feel like I have always been an artist and movement has always been the way I feel most at home. I’ve skated and danced since I was very young but made the decision to pursue contemporary skating as a career after graduating from university.

What can’t you live without?

Other than the cheesy answer of skating and dance, I would have to say my yoga mat, my headphones, my journal, my big collection of funky earrings, and chocolate!

What’s your pre-show ritual?

Before every show I do a yoga-based warmup to get my body moving and connect to my breath. I also have a pre-show playlist that I love to listen to. Just before we get on the ice for the show, the whole cast gives each other high fives and I absolutely love this little ritual to get us all in performance mode!

Backstage with Jenn Edwards

Jenn is a contemporary dance and skatingartist/educator based in Labrador, Canada. Originally from Vancouver, her choreography has been presented at festivals and mixed programs such as Dance: Made in Canada, Fusion Festival (Berlin), and Vines Art Festival. Jenn joined Le Patin Libre in 2018.

What led you to become an artist?

My dad was a full-time musician his whole life, so in a way I think that gave me permission to pursue art as a career. It was always encouraged, and never treated like a pipe dream. I grew up skating, dancing, and acting in school plays. I loved all of it and just didn’t want to stop, I guess!

What are you making space for in your life?

These days, music has become much more important in my life. I grew up playing the piano, but only discovered my love of playing in bands in my early 30s. Now I play keys and sing in a band called Ptarmageddon up in Labrador.

What’s your favourite thing to do in Toronto?

I used to live in Parkdale. I love walking up and down Roncy (The Local is my favourite bar these days), going to High Park, and taking classes at Mosaic Yoga in The Junction.
