2013

sveta v svoji neokrnjeni obliki.

I vividly remember the beautiful, sunny summer morning, more than 50 years ago, when I was climbing up from Poldov rovt in the Vrata valley past Brinova glava towards Jezera in the company of Avgust Delavec, the legendary mountain worker and alpinist from Mojstrana. With the sound of sheep bells in the background, I listened eagerly to his tales about the four men from Bohinj who were the first to climb Triglav, about the mountain carriers from the Radovna valley and mountain guides from Trenta, about Julius Kugy, Jakob Aljaž and his turret and, when our eyes caught sight of the Triglav North Face, about climbing stories, tragedies and rescue operations. We also talked about the life of Bohinj dairy farmers, sheep growers in the Vrata valley, the hard life of people from Trenta and about all the enthusiasts

building mountain huts and trails. Every single word spoke of the close relationship between man and mountains which was the source of meager but hard earned and therefore all the more respected earnings. Filled with respect and appreciation, people fought to preserve the most beautiful parts of Slovenian mountains in their primeval state. We live in an era when people again try to find their way back to nature, and to themselves. When entering the wonderful world of the Triglav National Park, stop for a moment! Let your soul drink in the beauty of the mountains, as well as the stories and messages of all who are or have been their inseparable part. This is the only way to learn to truly appreciate the park, and respect it as an asset of permanent value, a treasure which we love to visit time and time again. Enriched by this knowledge, we will pursue sound management to create such conditions that the area will become a joy to live in and one that will be loved and cherished by its residents as much as it was in the past. •

T

Leta  so park nekoliko povečali in preimenovali v Triglavski narodni park.

Triglav National Park (tnp) is Slovenia’s only national park. Located in the region of the Julian Alps, in north-west Slovenia, the park derives its name from Mount Triglav, which not only stands in the middle of the protected area but is also the highest and most famous mountain in Slovenia. Triglav is the symbol of the nation’s identity and, according to a popular Slovene tradition, no one can be a ‘true Slovene’ unless they have climbed Triglav. Besides Triglav, which in clear weather is visible from practically all parts of the country, most of Slovenia’s -plus mountain peaks rising above  m are located within the Triglav National Park. The Triglav National Park is one of Europe’s earliest parks. The first motion to establish a protected area in the Triglav Lakes Valley was launched in  and implemented in  with the formation of the ,-hectare Alpine Conservation Park. In  the park was extended and renamed as the Triglav National Park. The year  saw the adoption of the Triglav National Park Act, promulgating a protected area which covers , ha, or approximately % of Slovenia’s surface area. The  Act remained in force until the new tnp Act was passed in . According to the new Act, the park

was extended by  ha, to cover the village of Kneške Ravne on the Primorsko side of Vogel, at about  m a.s.l., following the initiative of the Kneške Ravne villagers. Triglav National Park is managed by the Triglav National Park Public Institute, which is primarily committed to the protection of natural and cultural landscapes, but also performs other specialist and research tasks. Although divided by law into three protective regimes, Triglav National Park is commonly divided into the southern side, or the Soča side of the park, and the northern, Gorenjska, side. The border between these two parts runs along the sharp ridges of the Julian Alps, into which numerous alpine valleys cut in on both sides, including the valleys of Trenta, Koritnica, and Bavšica in the south, and Vrata, Krma and Radovna in the north. Due to the proximity of the Mediterranean, the climate in the park’s southern part is mild, whereas in the north it shows the effects of the colder Central-European alpine and continental climates. The relief and climatic conditions of both parts of the park determine the flora and the tree line, which runs higher on the northern side than in the south. Natural conditions also affect the development of the cultural landscape, showing clear differences between the distinct Gorenjska landscape and the typical cultural landscape of the Soča Valley side. •

NARAVOVARSTVENI NADZORNIK SVETUJE THE PARK RANGER RECOMMENDS Marjeta Albinini naravovarstveno nadzorna služba TNP Ranger Service

Stopite do njih, in z veseljem vam bodo svetovali!

Although general information is readily available on the Internet and from the park’s info points and centres, you can also learn a lot of useful and interesting information from tnp rangers. Since

most of the ranger’s work is performed in the field, you can meet them at any stage of your trip. They are always ready and delighted to help. Triglav National Park employs  professional rangers, who are easily identifiable by their grey-black uniforms, cars with tnp logos, badges and ranger identity cards. Each ranger covers a nature conservation area measuring approximately , ha. Rangers provide direct supervision and control, maintain the park infrastructure, observe and monitor wildlife, take part in specialist, research and educational tasks, and guide and advise visitors. Two thirds of park rangers also act as hunting guards. A park ranger is an authorized official who is responsible for the enforcement of the tnp Act and several other legal acts. The work of a park ranger is prevention-oriented, although they can issue a fine for certain types of offences. •

VARNO V GORE SAFELY TO THE MOUNTAINS / SAFETY FIRST Iztok Butinar parkovni vodnik TNP TNP guide

lagodite svojim vsakokratnim sposobnostim, znanju in razmeram.

When you undertake an activity in the tnp, whether it is walking, climbing, cycling, a water sport or an air activity, your safety depends on your sound judgement, overall physical condition, and concentration. Your safety is your own responsibility. Make sure you adapt your activities to your current level of fitness, knowledge, and general conditions. Weather: Weather in the mountains is very changeable. Before setting out on a mountain tour, always check the weather forecast. Bring a change of clothes, and dress in layers. Health: When venturing on a tour, make sure it is suitable to your physical and mental fitness. Also, carry an adequate supply of liquid as the possibility of dehydration is high in the hot summer months. Paths: Gravel increases the possibility of slipping, in particular in exposed places and in wet condi-

tions. Demanding secured routes require the use of self-belaying kits, harnesses and helmets, as well as suitable climbing footwear. Equipment: Only use mountaineering equipment; the equipment should be checked, maintained and properly stored when not in use. Wear good quality high mountaineering boots with sturdy soles. Information: Before setting off, obtain the relevant information on the conditions of paths and trails, available mountain huts and bivouacs, and the weather. In case of an accident call . •

Z JAVNIM PREVOZOM V PARK TO THE PARK BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT Urška Smukavec strokovna sodelavka Specialized staff member

Triglavski narodni park zaradi svoje izjemne lepote privablja množice obiskovalcev, ki v neokrnjeni naravi iščejo mir in sprostitev. Uprava parka želi razbremeniti okolje z osebnim motornim prometom in okrepiti različne vrste javnega prometa. Z javnim avtobusnim prevozom je v poletni turistični sezoni mogoče obiskati območje Bohinja s slapom Savico in Bohinjskim jezerom, Zgornjesavsko dolino in okolico Bleda.

The outstanding beauty of Triglav National Park attracts many visitors who seek peace and relaxation in unspoilt nature. The managing authority of the park wishes to reduce the environmental impact from passenger vehicles by promoting various types of public transport, which is beneficial for people as well as for the natural environment, particularly since greenhouse gas emissions, noise and endless rows of parked cars are becoming a growing concern in protected areas. Environmentfriendly public transport is safer and more economical, with the average energy consumption per passenger five times lower in buses than in cars. In summer season public transport can be used to visit Bohinj, including the Savica Waterfall and Lake Bohinj, as well as the Upper Sava Valley and the area of Bled. During the summer months, the Soča and Sava Dolinka valleys are connected by a bus line between Bovec and Kranjska Gora. The train ride along the Bohinj railway line between Jesenice and Nova Gorica offers spectacular views and takes visitors to the peripheral area of the park by train and car train. Automobiles using alternative sources of energy are another way to reduce environmental impact, whereas cycling and walking are also beneficial to our health. However, if you cannot say no to car transport, you should at least be aware that you are not alone on the road. Observe the speed limits and park in designated places only. •

TRIGLAVU POD NOGÉ V NARAVO IN MED LJUDI TO THE FOOT OF TRIGLAV, OUT INTO THE NATURE AND AMONG PEOPLE Ana Kunstelj Info središče TNP Triglavska roža na Bledu Info centre TNP Triglavska roža in Bled

In če grem kam drugam … povsod sem iz Ljubljane v eni uri, kamorkoli me bo zaneslo.

Fed up with steaming hot concrete, my air-conditioned office and car, and the mobile that never stops ringing, I need a break. Lots of possibilities, not enough time. The idea of a lonely island or a sailing boat on a vast sea is therefore dismissed immediately, and even exotic countries seem much too far for the short yet effective recharge of my batteries which I need. I need my eyes to fill with green. I need to feel a fresh breeze, a sprinkle of rain, to sit under a tree and watch the butterfly swirl in the air. I need to smell a flower I have not noticed before, climb uphill to stretch my stiff legs, and forget to check my watch to see whether it’s lunch time already but rather let myself be drawn to a local inn by my rumbling stomach… It is not far to the kingdom at the foot of Triglav. I can go there on a short trip, or spend a day or half a

day amidst the summits and valleys nestled below them. Admittedly, the area is a treasure store of nature’s wonders and to explore and thoroughly research it would take several years, or even a lifetime. Bohinj, the Pokljuka plateau, the Vrata valley, all at a hand’s reach. I could set off into the valley of the Radovna, a crystal clear and cold river, flanked on the right and left by the wooden plateaus of Mežakla and Pokljuka, meadows and hay meadows forming a hypnotic sequence on both sides of the macadam road from Zgornje Gorje towards the Krma valley, to the foot of majestic Mt Triglav. When in Zgornja Radovna, one can stop time or even turn it back, in particular when visiting the open-air museum of Pocar Homestead, where the smoke kitchen breathes sooty memories of the fireplace on which delicious corn or buckwheat žganci were made and where a visitor is impressed by the wisdom of life in harmony with nature’s seasons, and the pride of a self-sufficient and self-preserving farmer of this alpine valley. Hey, maybe the lush meadows embracing the farm in their charming hold of hummocks which are mowed only once a year, with a scythe, are full of flowers and butterflies. We can see the blue flowers of the spring gentian, tiny pink carnations and orchids, and arnica later in the summer. If I feel hungry, I can enjoy a home-made meal at the village inn, in the shadow of majestic linden trees. And if opt for another destination … wherever I decide to go, it won’t take me more than one hour from Ljubljana. Wherever I go, I find peace and calm, and I can return quickly, feeling rested and able to meet my obligations. Also, I can venture on any of these trips led by a guide or tnp ranger. In my experience, they can help you see things you would never notice, regardless of how hard you tried.

In any season, the Radovna river is home to a small passerine bird with dark brown plumage and a white apron, crouching on a stone in the river and then lurching into the rapids at an alarming speed. This is the white-throated dipper. The dipper turns over stones searching for aquatic insect larvae and other tiny animals. Apart from crouching on rocks and diving into clear mountain rivers and streams, white-throated dippers are also known for their low flights above the river surface. The white-throated dipper is slightly larger than the sparrow. The plumage is dark brown, except for white throat and chest. It has short wings and rather long and strong feet. It nests from March to June. The dipper’s moss-made nest is near the

water, built into in a crack or hollow in the rock, on the shore, entangled in tree roots or mounted on the supports of a bridge. In the Triglav National Park, dippers are most common along the rivers Radovna, Savica, Soča and Triglavska Bistrica. The population is threatened by regulation of streams and rivers, human disturbance during nesting, and pollution of surface waters.

DOLINA KRMA KRMA VALLEY Vrata, Kot in Krma sodijo med bolj znane ledeniške doline v Sloveniji. So šolski primeri ledeniške doline, krasi jih veličastna kulisa osrednjih Julijcev. Sprehod vam v poletnem času ponuja doživetje nikoli (preveč) vroče alpske doline, možnost opazovanja grbinastih travnikov, poslušanje šelestenja bukovih gozdov in razgled na nekatere najbolj znane vrhove v Julijskih Alpah.

For our youngest visitors the longest of the three valleys. It is a popular starting point for long tours to Triglav and the neighboring summits, and an interesting tourist destination. The most nature-friendly way to Krma is on foot or by bicycle from the Radovna valley, although there is also a car park. In summer, walkers into the Krma valley will benefit from the experience of a never (too) hot alpine valley, observation of hummocky meadows, listen to the rustling of beech forests and enjoying the view of some of the best known peaks of the Julian Alps. The trip is also suitable for families (baby carriage) and people with special needs (wheelchair access).

S svojo lego, arhitekturno dediščino, bogato zbirko razstavljenih predmetov in zgodbo kustosa o Pocarjih pričara obiskovalcu sliko življenja v krajih pod Triglavom od daljnih stoletij do danes.

The Medium printing company has evolved from a small workshop that started operation in 1984. Our primary activities, printing and design, are complemented by a range of supplementary activities such as publishing, sale of promotional items, and an online store for eco-friendly products.

lam najbolj prijazna slovenska podjetja.

On Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April, Medium d.o.o. held an eco-breakfast for its business partners. The aim of the event was to strengthen business relations and socialize over delicious home-made food from the local organic farm. Our partners were also presented the sustainable practice cases which earned Medium d.o.o. the Green Office 2012 Award and placed the company among most bee-friendly companies in Slovenia. Furthermore, Medium d.o.o. was awarded an AAA credit rating of excellence in 2012. Miran Dolar, Director of Medium d.o.o., summed up: »Earth Day is a good moment for us to remember that to live moderately does not mean to deprive ourselves of anything, but rather to use only as much as we really need.«

Olga Zgaga, her husband Cveto and daughter Alenka dedicate all their free time to studying, collecting and recording the material and non-material cultural heritage of the upper parts of the Baška grapa ravine. The family lives  km away in Nova Gorica but spends every free moment on the sunny slopes of the Lower Bohinj Mountains, which the people of Baška grapa have nicknamed ‘Peči’. This panoramic ridge with its immensely rich flora, a secluded place of peace despite the nearby tourist resorts, is the part of Zlatorog’s kingdom which they take most to heart.

S

te že bili v Baški grapi? Z obeh strani ujeta v varno naročje Spodnjih Bohinjskih gora in Cerkljanskega hribovja se z živahno reko Bačo, cesto in slikovito bohinjsko železniško progo vije od Petrovega Brda do Bače pri Modreju. Trinajst vasi v njenem zgornjem delu, vse do sredine . stoletja združenih v rihtarijo Nemški Rut, še danes nosi pečat tirolske poselitve iz . stoletja (ledinska imena, značilna govorica, priimki). Plačevale so le manjše dajatve, sicer so bile svobodne.

so travnate strmine pokosili vse do vrhov, pasli živino in lovili divjad. Planinarili so le raziskovalci in botaniki (Karl Zois, saški kralj Friderik Avgust ii.

Have you ever been to Baška grapa? Along the bottom of the ravine, hemmed in by the Lower Bohinj Mountains on the one side and the Cerklje hills on the other, flows the lively Bača river alongside the road and the picturesque railway track leading from Petrovo Brdo to Bača pri Modreju. Thirteen villages in the upper reaches of the ravine, which had formed the administrative unit – rihtarija – of Nemški Rut by the mid-th century, still bear signs of th century Tirolan settlement (place names, surnames, other expressions). The villagers were independent landholders, free of taxes and partly also of charges. Consequently, they did not take part in the renowned Tolmin Revolt of , for which they were rewarded by the Emperor. Right above the valley floor, Baška grapa displays attractive features which nature has formed while carving its way through narrow gorges, precipitous ravines and humid caves. However, the call of surrounding summits is even more appealing. For a long time, local people did not practice mountaineering as we know it today. In their harsh struggle for survival, they climbed the steep slopes daily in an effort to mow the grassy slopes up to the very tops, graze their cattle, and hunt game. At the time, mountaineering was

in the domain of explorers and botanists (e.g. Karl Zois, Elector of Saxony Augustus ii), who spread the fame of Črna prst as the ‘garden of Europe’ at the beginning of the th century. At the start of the th century the charming panorama of summits marked out like lace against the sky began to draw people to the top of Črna prst. In , at the end of the academic year, the vicar from Stržišče below Črna prst said mass on the top and wrote an ode to the mountain in his chronicle. Young people from both sides of the mountain had set off towards the summit at midnight to admire the beauty of the sunrise from the top. New friendships were made and sealed with edelweiss bouquets, against the backdrop of Slovenian songs. However, the life of the people changed dramatically with the Italian occupation after wwi. A small barracks was built on Črna prst, and access to the top was denied. After the war, mountaineers turned the barracks into a mountain lodge, which is currently managed by the Podbrdo Alpine Club. Črna prst, which sits on the edge of the Triglav National Park, is at its most beautiful in July, when its meadows come to life with a spectacular display of alpine flowers. •
