Takrat smo še posebej radovedni, celo malce vznemirjeni. V kakšen svet bo-

mo vstopili? Majhen, velik, pisan, topel! Skratka, pričakovanje je veliko. Pripravljeni, z darilom v roki, navadno najprej pozvonimo. Le še nekaj sekund nas loči in naša radovednost bo potešena. Vrata se odpro. Nasmeh na obrazih. Prijazni pozdravi z ene in druge strani vrat kar dežujejo, mi pa jih skorajda preslišimo. Radovednost nam ne da miru. Končno zaslišimo: »kar naprej, kar naprej«! Medtem ko so naše oči do konca na-

pete, iščoč prve utrinke novega stanovanja, nam roke samodejno sežejo do čevljev. Prvi koraki so previdni.

From time to ime we all go for a visit to see somebody, whether relatives, friends, or acquaintances. Our reasons for such a visit or meeting are different. It might be a Sunday lunch or a celebration. Or a flatwarming party. On such an occasion we feel particularly curious, and probably even excited. What kind of a world will we enter? Will it be small, big, colourful, warm? Sometimes our expectations know no bounds. With a gift in hand, we first ring the doorbell. Just a few seconds more, and our curiosity will be quenched. The door opens. Smiling faces. Greet-

ings are exchanged, but barely heard as the curiosity builds up. Finally someone says: “Come on inside!” And while we strain our eyes to catch a glimpse of the new flat, we automaticaly reach for our shoes. And then we hear again: “No, no, leave your shoes on!” And so we enter a world that is completely new to us. Our first steps are slow and careful. We move on as if we were entering a sanctuary, exploring the flat room after room. Making intriguing new discoveries. As the conversation continues, we begin to understand why the living room is so bright, why the kitchen is so pleasantly warm, and why everything feels so homey. The time passes all too quickly. But it is not so hard to say goodbye. We return home with pleasant experiences. And deep inside we know that we will be coming back, ringing that bell, and knocking on that door, and that it will open again ….

Welcome to the mysterious world of the Triglav National Park! •

T

Leta  so park nekoliko povečali in preimenovali v Triglavski narodni park.

Triglav National Park (tnp) is Slovenia’s only national park. Located in the region of the Julian Alps, in north-west Slovenia, the park derives its name from Mount Triglav, which not only stands in the middle of the protected area but is also the highest and most famous mountain in Slovenia. Triglav is the symbol of the nation’s identity and, according to a popular Slovene tradition, no one can be a ‘true Slovene’ unless they have climbed Triglav. Besides Triglav, which in clear weather is visible from practically all parts of the country, most of Slovenia’s -plus mountain peaks rising above  m are located within the Triglav National Park. The Triglav National Park is one of Europe’s earliest parks. The first motion to establish a protected area in the Triglav Lakes Valley was launched in  and implemented in  with the formation of the ,-hectare Alpine Conservation Park. In  the park was extended and renamed as the Triglav National Park. The year  saw the adoption of the Triglav National Park Act, promulgating a protected area which covers , ha, or approximately % of Slovenia’s surface area. The  Act remained in force until the new tnp Act was passed in . According to the new Act, the park

was extended by  ha, to cover the village of Kneške Ravne on the Primorsko side of Vogel, at about  m a.s.l., following the initiative of the Kneške Ravne villagers. Triglav National Park is managed by the Triglav National Park Public Institute, which is primarily committed to the protection of natural and cultural landscapes, but also performs other specialist and research tasks. Although divided by law into three protective regimes, Triglav National Park is commonly divided into the southern side, or the Soča side of the park, and the northern, Gorenjska, side. The border between these two parts runs along the sharp ridges of the Julian Alps, into which numerous alpine valleys cut in on both sides, including the valleys of Trenta, Koritnica, and Bavšica in the south, and Vrata, Krma and Radovna in the north. Due to the proximity of the Mediterranean, the climate in the park’s southern part is mild, whereas in the north it shows the effects of the colder Central-European alpine and continental climates. The relief and climatic conditions of both parts of the park determine the flora and the tree line, which runs higher on the northern side than in the south. Natural conditions also affect the development of the cultural landscape, showing clear differences between the distinct Gorenjska landscape and the typical cultural landscape of the Soča Valley side. •

The summer programme is intended for visitors who wish to experience the Triglav National Park in a slightly different way. tnp will run several thematic programmes in the tourist resorts near the park, and organise events at the tnp information points and visitor centres, as well as guided photography workshops and tours. This year’s new attraction is our mobile information point, a van equipped with advanced technological equipment, which will attempt to raise the awareness of park visitors and provide them with useful information. The mobile info point will visit various locations within and near the park.

O naravi in kulturni dediščini About nature and cultural heritage

JAVORCA, SPOMINSKA CERKEV SVETEGA DUHA THE MEMORIAL CHURCH OF THE HOLY SPIRIT AT JAVORCA Gorazd Kutin naravovarstvena nadzorna služba TNP Ranger Service

The memorial church of the Holy Spirit is situated in the valley of the Tolminka River. It stands near the hamlet of the same name and is surrounded by the high summits of the Krn range. Austro-Hungarian soldiers built the church at Javorca because of its secluded location and central position amidst the most important summits of the battlefield. The church was built in  and already used during World War I. Catholics, orthodox Christians, Muslims, Jews, and atheists would all go to the church as a sacred place, where one could find some peace and quiet and forget about the war for a brief moment. Today, more than  years after the end of wwi, the church is still a vivid reminder of the horrors of the war and a unique cultural monument listed as a unesco European Cultural Heritage Site. •

DIVJI PETELIN CAPERCAILLIE (Tetrao urogallus) Jernej Legat naravovarstvena nadzorna služba TNP Ranger Service

Spominska cerkev sv. Duha v Javorci stoji v dolini reke Tolminke, nedaleč od zaselka z istim imenom, obdana z mogočnimi gorami krnskega pogorja. Vojaki avstroogrske monarhije so jo zgradili na tem mestu predvsem zaradi skrite lege in približno enake oddaljenosti do vseh ključnih vrhov tega bojišča.

Živi v mirnih starih mešanih in iglastih gozdovih. Poseljeval je Julijske Alpe, Pokljuko, Jelovico, Škofjeloško, Cerkljansko in Polhograjsko hribovje, Karavanke, Savinjske Alpe, Koroško in Posavsko hribovje, Nanos, Snežnik, Kočevsko, Pohorje,

Kobariško, Tolminsko in Bovško.

The capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is the largest forest grouse in Slovenia. It inhabits peaceful and mature mixed and coniferous forest stands. It prefers forests with thick undergrowth, rich in the blueberry bushes which provide the capercaillie with food and shelter. Currently the capercaillie can be found in alpine and pre-alpine forests which give the bird the tranquility it seeks. In the past, the capercaillie inhabited the Julian Alps, the Pokljuka plateau, the hills in the area of Škofja loka, Cerklje, and Polhov Gradec, the mountain ranges of the Karavanke and Julian Alps, as well as the Koroška region, the hills of Posavje, Nanos, and Snežnik, and the areas of Kočevje, Pohorje, Kobarid, Tolmin, and Bovec. In recent years, the species has disappeared

from certain areas and is close to extinction in others. The most numerous capercaillie population has been preserved on the Pokljuka and Jelovica plateaus, and in Koroška. Capercaillie numbers have dropped so dramatically that the present population level can no longer guarantees the species’ survival. Since this decline was caused by human activity, we are obliged to help the species through the adoption of appropriate measures, e.g. preservation of sufficiently large mature forest areas, harvesting outside the capercaillie’s mating season, prevention of the overgrowth of forest clearings, and the introduction of limits on forest fruit picking. As the capercaillie is a threatened species, special attention will have to be paid to protecting and preserving the last remaining capercaillie birds in Slovenia’s forests. •

The term hummocky meadows is used to denote meadows and pasturelands in alpine valleys and on low-lying alpine plateaus which are characterised by a gently undulating surface consisting of small hollows (similar to karst hollows) and intermittent hummocks (tussocks) that may be . to . m in height and are normally  to  m apart. Hummocky terrain can form on moderately permeable glacial till or on fluvio-glacial deposits of carbonate rock (limestone, dolomite) consisting of boulders, gravel, sand and silt. These formations are the result of the long-lasting processes of mechanical weathering and the chemical dissolving of rocks, which can occur across surface planes or remain limited to certain points. The size of areas covered by hummocky meadows has recently been on the decline, mainly due to mechanical leveling of meadows, the abandonment of dairy farming, and overgrowth. In the tnp, hummocky meadows can still be found in the Radovna and the Vrata valleys, in Bohinj, on Pokljuka, Vogar and Uskovnica, and in the valleys of Trenta and Loška Koritnica. •

VARNO V GORE SAFELY TO THE MOUNTAINS / SAFETY FIRST Iztok Butinar parkovni vodnik TNP TNP guide

When you undertake an activity in the tnp, whether it is walking, climbing, cycling, a water sport or an air activity, your safety depends on your sound judgement, overall physical condition, and con-

centration. Your safety is your own responsibility. Make sure you adapt your activities to your current level of fitness, knowledge, and general conditions. Weather: Weather in the mountains is very changeable. Before setting out on a mountain tour, always check the weather forecast. Bring a change of clothes, and dress in layers. Health: When venturing on a tour, make sure it is suitable to your physical and mental fitness. Also, carry an adequate supply of liquid as the possibility of dehydration is high in the hot summer months. Paths: Gravel increases the possibility of slipping, in particular in exposed places and in wet conditions. Demanding secured routes require the use of self-belaying kits, harnesses and helmets, as well as suitable climbing footwear. Equipment: Only use mountaineering equipment; the equipment should be checked, maintained and properly stored when not in use. Wear good quality high mountaineering boots with sturdy soles. Information: Before setting off, obtain the relevant information on the conditions of paths and trails, available mountain huts and bivouacs, and the weather. In case of an accident call . •

NARAVOVARSTVENI NADZORNIK SVETUJE THE PARK RANGER RECOMMENDS Marjeta Albinini naravovarstveno nadzorna služba TNP Ranger Service

Stopite do njih, in z veseljem vam bodo svetovali!

Although general information is readily available on the Internet and from the park’s info points and centres, you can also learn a lot of useful and interesting information from tnp rangers. Since most of the ranger’s work is performed in the field, you can meet them at any stage of your trip. They are always ready and delighted to help. Triglav National Park employs  professional rangers, who are easily identifiable by their grey-black uniforms, cars with tnp logos, badges and ranger identity cards. Each ranger covers a nature conservation area measuring approximately , ha. Rangers provide direct supervision and control, maintain the park infrastructure, observe and monitor wildlife, take part in specialist, research and educational tasks, and guide and

advise visitors. Two thirds of park rangers also act as hunting guards. A park ranger is an authorized official who is responsible for the enforcement of the tnp Act and several other legal acts. The work of a park ranger is prevention-oriented, although they can issue a fine for certain types of offences. •

Z JAVNIM PREVOZOM V PARK TO THE PARK BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT Urška Smukavec strokovna sodelavka Specialized staff member

Triglavski narodni park zaradi svoje izjemne lepote privablja množice obiskovalcev, ki v neokrnjeni naravi iščejo mir in sprostitev. Uprava parka želi razbremeniti okolje z osebnim motornim prometom in okrepiti različne vrste javnega prometa. Z javnim avtobusnim prevozom je v poletni turistični sezoni mogoče obiskati območje Bohinja s slapom Savico in Bohinjskim jezerom, Zgornjesavsko dolino in okolico Bleda. Dolini Soče in Save Dolinke čez pre-

The outstanding beauty of Triglav National Park attracts many visitors who seek peace and relaxation in unspoilt nature. The managing authority of the park wishes to reduce the environmental impact from passenger vehicles by promoting various types of public transport, which is beneficial for people as well as for the natural environment, particularly since greenhouse gas emissions, noise and endless rows of parked cars are becoming a growing concern in protected areas. Environmentfriendly public transport is safer and more economical, with the average energy consumption per passenger five times lower in buses than in cars. In summer season public transport can be used to visit Bohinj, including the Savica Waterfall and Lake Bohinj, as well as the Upper Sava Valley and the area of Bled. During the summer months, the Soča and Sava Dolinka valleys are connected by a bus line between Bovec and Kranjska Gora. The train ride along the Bohinj railway line between Jesenice and Nova Gorica offers spectacular views and takes visitors to the peripheral area of the park by train and car train. Automobiles using alternative sources of energy are another way to reduce environmental impact, whereas cycling and walking are also beneficial to our health. However, if you cannot say no to car transport, you should at least be aware that you are not alone on the road. Observe the speed limits and park in designated places only. •

Še vedno vitalen, nasmejan, otroško radoveden in skromen, Peter danes uživa v družbi družine in narave.

Oj, Triglav, moj dom (Oh Triglav, My Home) is a poem which was written in  by the priest and poet Matija Zemljič, from Gornja Radgona. The poem was set to music by priest Jakob Aljaž, and first performed on  August  at the opening of the hut Triglavska koča on Kredarica. This is a poem about Triglav, the symbol of the nation. Slovenes love to sing it, and you can hear it in mountain huts, especially when these are visited by large groups of mountain enthusiasts. Maybe you will soon find yourself in one of them.

Who is Peter Ščetinin? A great Slovenian alpinist, who has earned widespead acclaim as the climbing companion of Ante Mahkota when the two climbed a new route up the face of the Sfinga (the Sphinx) of the Triglav North Face in 1966. Still full of energy, smiling, modest, with a childlike curiosity, Peter spends his days with his family and nature.

T

Mount Triglav, one of Slovenia’s greatest symbols, is not only an integral element of the Slovenian national identity, but has also become, on account of its majestic North Face, the symbol of all Slovenian alpinists. Just as almost every Slovene wishes to stand at the top of Triglav at least once in a lifetime, every aspiring climber wants to climb the Triglav North Face. Today more than ever before we should, however, learn from the tragic fate that befell the hunter in the tale of Zlatorog (the mysterious white chamois with golden horns), who gets consumed by greed, and loses his life as a result. We should remember that like this hunter we too are only guests in the mountain world. And a word of advice for all who still seek treasures in nature: we will definitely not find any by destroying the pristine natural beauty of the mountains; these treasures are only revealed to those who live in harmony with nature. As a mountaineer, I sought the fabled mountain treasure in my own way, finding it in the steep cliffs of mountains. Far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In the mountains I was alone, or linked up in a pair, solely dependent on the decisions I made and the actions I took. In other words, I was my own master. I have spent countless wonderful and difficult moments in the mountains, for which I am deeply grateful. Without the mountains in my life, I would have become a totally different person. I was drawn to the Triglav North Face with the same intensity as any other alpinist. When I first climbed it I was still a beginner. Over the years the routes have become more and more demanding, and in  Ante

Mahkota and I climbed a new route across the face of the Sfinga (the Sphinx), establishing what was at the time the most demanding climbing route in the Julian Alps. Besides the Triglav North Face, the Triglav National Park boasts numerous other climbing challenges, inviting alpinists to take their pick from a multitude of cliffs and crags. In the course of my career as an alpinist I have climbed many difficult routes in Slovenia, as well as in other European and Asian mountains, alone or with my wife Barbka, who succumbed to a fatal illness at the early age of , and then with my friend Georg Haider, from Bavaria. Together with Barbka, or by myself, I also took part in several expeditions to the Caucasus, the Pamir Mountains, the Hindu Kush, and the Himalayas. Even today, at , I feel most at home when I am surrounded by the mountains. That is why I live in the Trenta Valley, at Rebrca in Vrsnik. Here, in the Triglav National Park, life is different than that which is lived in and around cities. With the help of my second wife Mariana, from Tyrol, who has to my great luck fallen in love with the Slovenian mountains, we keep woods clear, and mow steep and undulating grasslands in order to preserve the nature as it was passed on to us by our ancestors. Work in the forest, in the meadows, and around the house leaves me little time for climbing, my old love. On the other hand, it is also true that my enthusiasm and my will to climb is not as strong as it was  years ago. Luckily, my life’s batteries have collected so much energy during my past mountain experiences that they are bound to last until the end of my days. •

OJ TRIGLAV, MOJ DOM Oj Triglav, moj dom, kako si krasan, kako me izvabljaš iz nizkih ravan v poletni vročini na strme vrhe, da tam si spočije v samoti srce, kjer potok izvira v skalovju hladan: oj Triglav, moj dom, kako si krasan! Oj Triglav, moj dom, četudi je svet začaral s čudesi mi večkrat pogled, tujina smehljaje kazala mi kras, le nate sem mislil ljubeče ves čas, o tebi sem sanjal sred’ svetlih dvoran: oj Triglav, moj dom, kako si krasan! Oj Triglav, v spominu mi je tvoj čar, zato pa te ljubim in bom te vsekdar, in zadnja ko ura odbila mi bo, pod tvojim obzorjem naj spava telo, kjer radostno ptički naznanjajo dan: oj Triglav, moj dom, kako si krasan!
