Homecoming 2013 Welcome home Alumni! Retiring faculty members Linda '63 (Leiker) Braun, Jim Dinkel, Juleen Stecklein and Clara Walters will be honored during the Homecoming parade, half-time of the football game and during the alumni banquet as the 2013 Grand Marshals. Honor classes this year are the 50-year class- Class of 1963 and the 25-year class- Class of 1988.

Special recognition goes out to the 40-year class - Class of 1973. Congratulations to retired faculty members Linda '63 (Leiker} Braun, Jim Dinkel, Juleen Stecklein and Clara Walters for being chosen as the 2013 Thomas More Prep-Marian Homecoming Grand Marshals.

Linda '63 (Leiker) Braun 46 Years of Service In her 46 years, Linda '63 (Leiker) Braun taught English, Journalism and Latin . In addition, she sponsored classes, clubs and STUCO. While teaching Journalism, her students won three consecutive state championships and brought home a trophy to roost. Also, the Latin students, ranging in levels from I-IV, garnered many National Latin exam honors.

Linda married Donald Braun in 1966 and they celebrated 41 years of marriage before Donald passed away in 2007.

Their son, Don '88 Braun, Jr. is practicing medicine in Burlington, Kansas and their daughter Christina '94 (Braun) Garrison is a therapist at the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita, Ka nsas. Don Jr. and his wife Linda have t hree sons, Parker, Christian and Landon. Linda is moving to Wichita to be closer to her grandsons.

Jim Dinkel 43 Years of Service Jim and his wife Shirley '67 (Gnad) Dinkel have 76 years of teaching between them at TMP-M and St. Joseph's-HFE. Jim graduated from FHSU in 1973 with a Master of Arts in Mathematics and has taught Algebra, Geometry, Chemistry, Earth Science & Space Science at TMP. He teases, " I tell jokes periodically in Chemistry, but usually don't get any reaction".

As head baseball coach for 27 years, he took his teams to state championship t itles in 1974 (5-4-3A) and 1981 (4-3-2lA).

He was also assistant coach in football, basketball and wrestling. Their children James '89 Dinkel (Sprint manager in Lenexa, KS) & Michelle have three children; Deborah '90 (Dinkel) Sisbarro (State Department in Washington D.C.) has two children; Michael '97 Dinkel (environmental specialist for Anadarko Oil in Brighton, CO) & wife Roxy have two children and Christopher '03 Dinkel graduated with a law degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he was an Articles Editor on the Cornell Law Review.

Juleen Stecklein 36 Years of Service A native of Ellis County, Juleen Stecklein has taught for 36 years at TMP-M .

Her classes ranged from English to German, with the final years being devoted specifically to Sr. English and Adv. Placement English. Juleen also taught a college composition class concurrent with Sr. English.

She is married to George Stecklein, and they have 3 sons, Douglas '86, Steven '93 and Michael '99, all are graduates of TMP-M and the University of Kansas. Douglas, a pharmacist, and his wife Stephanie are the owners of USave Pharmacy in Hays; they have 3 children, Christopher '17, Joshua, ' 19 and Haley, who will be in 1st grade at Holy Family. Steven lives in Prairie Village, KS and is a probiotics consultant. He and his wife Liz have four children, twins Katie and Sophie, Lilly, and Vivian that attend St. Ann's Catho lic Schoo l. Michael, also a pharmacist, works at U-Save Pharmacy. He and his wife Carrie '95 (Rohr) have 3 preschool age children, Julianne, Allison & George.

Clara Walters 18 Years of Service Walters Clara started teaching at Thomas More Prep-Marian in 1995 and has t aught Spanish and German for 14 years. During the past four years, she has been teaching part-time with classes in German, Study Skills, ESL Listening & Conversation.

Clara married Tom '63 Walters (SJMA) in 1966. The couple has seven children (all whom have graduated from TMP-M) and seven grandchildren. Lynn '85 (Walters) & Tom '85 Malleck have a son Tony; Laurie '86 (Walters) & Mark Loughry have two children, Wyatt and Kayla and live in Ba sehor, KS; Jim '88 Walters; Tom '91 Walters Jr. and wife Arnie have two so ns, Jacob '18 & Cody; Jody '96 Walters lives in Camdem, NJ and is engaged to Ray Lebron; Justin '99 Walters and his wife Jacklynn of Parkville, MO, have two children, Hanna and Tommy and Brian '01 Walters, of Basehor, KS.

A Message From The Heart Dear Fellow Alumni, Greetings once again from your alma mater. It has been a great year here at TMP-M as we began the junior high program. The auction was a tremendous success and hopefully t here will be an elevator in place by the end of the year. Thanks to all w ho have come forward to so generously support us.

In May, we completed a project that was so close to my heart. The final stained-glass window was put in place in the Marian Chapel. The last window depicts St. Theresa, the Little Flower and honors the memory of Mary '71 Georgine Lang who disappeared in 1983. Like all the windows, it is beautiful. The first w indow of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was installed in September, 2009 and the others followed in about three mont h intervals, Mary, Joseph, Frances, Agnes, Thomas More, Thomas Aquinas, Michael, Cyril and Methodius, Anthony, Helen, Sebastian, Padre Pia, Mot her Theresa, John Paull I, Jude and Therese. That's 17 windows, all skillfully done by local artist Stan Detrixhe. If you are in Hays, don't miss the opportunity to come out and see the chapel and its new look. Thank you to all w ho donated toward this project. The windows are dedicated to deceased, or in honor of families or classes.

28tLArmucd TMP~Morlan Alumni Golf Cludc The 28th annual TMP-Marian Alumni Golf Classic was held on an absolutely weather perfect day for golf on Friday, June 7, 2013. The temperature ranged in the 70's with a gentle breeze to cool the golfers unlike the heavy wind and rain of last year. Golf scores varied anywhere from 59 to 91 with everyone enjoying a day out with their friends.

ACE2013

The 39 h annual Auction for Christian Education kicked off with a bang this year as tickets were sold or reserved in less than 7 hours on the first day.

Pictured to the left (1-r) are co-chairs Bill & Brenda '81 (Gottschalk) Klaus and Anne & Jim '79 Brull. They were the hosts of "Sweet Southern Night" and dressed the part of southern belles and gents to kick off the theme for this very exciting event. A cavalcade of generosity and goodwill towards ACE ended in a cumulative net profit of approximately

$630,500.00, raised for

the benefit of Thomas More Prep-Marian and Holy Family Elementary! The overall support for the elevator fund was phenomenal, bringing in a grand total of $332,906.02. For the first time ever, outside donations were allowed for this item. After the first $50,000 was received, the Leo J. & Albina Dreiling Trust pledged matching funds of up to $100,000 for the next $100,000 raised. The Ross & Marianna Beach Foundation also donated $25,000 to this project. Something different that happened this year was the power point presentations at each end of the gym and the live-streaming of the auction done by Eagle Communications. Alumni and friends all over the world were able to watch the auction from their electronic devices.

The elevator project is scheduled to begin in July, 2013 and should be near completion by the end of this year. Alumni and friends visiting the school for masses, plays and all activities will benefit from the new accessibility available to all. An oversized elevator will be located in the east wing of the school near the restrooms. Outside wheelchair access is through the northeast door by the dining hall. Plans for the restrooms have not been decided at this time since the actual cost of the elevator has not been determined. Depending on the final cost of the elevator, the addition of an ADA handicap accessible unisex restroom plus remodeling of current restrooms will be based on what remaining funds are available. Donations are still being accepted for this project.

We would especially like to thank everyone who donated cash, auction gifts, items used within the auction, purchased raffle tickets, our advertisers or attended the auction. Each year the auction utilizes 100+ alumni, parent, faculty/staff and student volunteers that helped solicit gifts, decorate, setup and tear down, bartend, prepare and serve the meal, work the silent auction booths, cashier/checkout, etc. ACE's success is due to each and every person involved in whatever manner they are able! Thank you.

I don't want to be repetitive but 'hoi y cow' - what an ACE Auction! "Sweet Southern Night" with cochairs Jim 79 & Anne Brull and Bill & Brenda '81 Klaus was received with a great urgency to attend. ACE has become the big social event at TMP-M, which was very evident with a sold out crowd almost immediately and, for the second year, a waiting list. With the enthusiam of the new elevator (which wi II be a wei com ed addition for the young and old), emotions were high. All said and done, we raised over $63 0,S 0 0. 0 0. Yes, you counted the zero's right, over one-half of a million dollars- can you believe it? Words can't describe how we all felt. Team work, team work, team work, by a I ot of faithful volunteers (we have the best in the world), who displayed their love for the school and what it stands for. Dedication, year after year, from alums, friends, business workers, solicitors, decorating, cooks, bartenders, etc., everyone had a part in makingthis great milestone. Saying thank you comes from the bottom of our hearts. This is why we are the envy of many and second to no one.

In January, TMP-Marian lost our oldest living male alum, Master Sgt. Frank '32 Stecklein. I'm so glad to have met him and his wife Judy; they truly loved this school. Frank died just weeks before his 100" birthday. Charlie Staab was the schools' woodworking wizard. Anything we needed, Charlie waul d build. What a joy he was! I I oved his chuckle and smile! Chari ie was involved with the VFW and American Legion veterans and carried his pride on his sleeve. He was proud to be an American and was dedicated to his country. Today, we "salute" both Frank and Charlie, thank you for keeping us free. Long-time art teacher Sail y Frank passed away right after ACE. She ret ired in 2 00 3 after 26 years of teaching to be with her grandchildren and family. She saw some of her grandchildren graduate from TMP-M and was very proud of that. Laverne Stieben, a staunch supporter died in November and his tragic death shocked this community. Laverne started the TMP-M Sports Booster raffle held every fall, which is their version of ACE. We worked closely together for almost 2 0 years and he turned this over to me a couple years ago, but continued to help. I wi II miss him dearly. Death comes with no specific age. God aIso takes our young. Shane '09 Gottschalk lost his battle with cancer. Shane was a big part of our alumni office, coming back year after year to help with ACE. We missed his smile and muscles at ACE 2013, but we know he watched from above with pleasure in those eyes and was proud of what he saw. "ShaneStrong" my friend. The death pages are filled in this issue with many people I knew personally, some relatives, parents of classmates and special friends. May all of you rest in God's hands.

As I wrote my letter this month, I turned 66 ... yes 66. Only good thing about it is I received my first social security check. Who knew when we were young and na'ive, that this day would come so quickly? Dragging Main in my Packard, KOMA radio, beverages and laughing with Cathy, Jeanette, Clare and Barb, those were the days. Now-a-days, I have to watch that I take the right medicine and get to work on tim e. I'm not giving my job up yet, same day maybe, just not yet. They say you're as young as you feel and right now I feel 65! Have a great summer and I hope to see many of you at Homecoming 2 013.

Every day has 24 hours-1 ,440 minutes-86,400 seconds. Or does it?

A short day is coming for all of us-a day when we will not reach the 86,400th second, and will pass on to our final reward.

Many are fortunate to have lived a long and valuable life, filled with great memories.

First, the "learning" years-youthful and vibrant time spent in school with classmates. Second, the "earning" yearsthat first job, building a career and meeting many friends and business associates. Third, the "retirement" years-when you can more fully enjoy visits with all of your family and friends. Yet there is one more part oflife-the chance through your estate to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.

And so I invite you to consider this story:

As was true with John D. Rockefeller, everything will be given to someone or for some purpose. Thank you for your past gifts to TMP-Marian. We know you have carefully thought and prayed about how much to give, to whom to give and how to give. Now we invite you to think about a "living legacy."

This is called a "living legacy" from your estate because through this gift you live on-at least in the sense that your lifelong efforts for accumulation could continue to bear fruit in helping our students and our school for generations yet to come. Often these planned nifts can result in sinnificant estate tax savin9s as well.

Many of our alumni and friends find great joy and satisfaction during life, knowing that their estate will someday make a great difference in the lives of others. Through a will with benefits for family and charity, you too can join in that happiness. Only the Lord knows if your" Shortest Day" is coming soon or is many years into the future, but your chance for the satisfaction of a legacy that touches many others can be here today.

He is suNived by his wife Judy, daughter Sharon Ann (Stecklein) Graber, son Carl Stecklein, sister Rose (Stecklein) Linenberger, brother Richard Stecklein, stepdaughters Beth Aim, Brenda Cheesman, Beverly Johnson , Bridgotte Griffin & stepson Brad Aim. Multiple nephews and nieces graduated from SJMA, GCHS, Marian and TMP-M High School. Prior to his death, Frank was the oldest living male alum, a 30-year military veteran and a POW during WWII after being captured in the Phillipines in 1942.

1935- Mary Esther (Meier) Rupp passed away on 1011-12. She is suNived by her son Terry '61 (& wife Sandy) Rupp, daughter Shannon (Rupp) Barnes and sister Catherine "Cotty" '47 (Meier) Seitz-Miles. Sandra and her son Michael Thomas were on a 570-mile walk across the state to raise money for equipment for stroke rehab at the medical center.

1986- Aaron Dome & fellow member of the Hays Fire Department, Myron '89 Dreiling were featured in the HDN in an article about the Battle of the Badges, a friendly competition between the Hays Police Department, Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services to see who can influence the most people to donate blood during the month of December.

1986- Lisa (Dinkel) Karlin was recognized for her 20 years of service to Fort Hays State University as an assistant to the president and equal opportunity employment officer in December.

1986- Debra (Ashmore) Staab & husband Larry had their twin daughters, Taylor '13 Staab & Jordan '13 Staab, featured in the HDN as they graduated with their TMP-Marian class in May of this year.

1987- David Barnett has received his CMS (Certified Management Accountant) designation, passing both 4Y,

hour exams on the first attempt He is now studying for the CPA exams.

1987 - Cheryl (Herrman) Shubert has taken on the duties of board clerk and director of accounting, along with being the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System designated agent for Hays USD 489.

1989- Jen (Sundgren) Brull was among the doctors featured in a Wall Street Journal article discussing social media and how doctors and patients communicate via Facebook. She is married to Christopher '89 Brull.

1989 - Anthony Gabel was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of management and marketing at Fort Hays State University.

1990 Heidi (Gnad) Goff recently received "Excellence in Appearance" awards for the Wakeeney and Dodge City Veterans Cemeteries. She is the current manager of both cemeteries.

1990 - Fr. Gale Hammerschmidt was ordained a priest on 5-19-12. His parents are Dennis & Vicky Sp'68 (Korbe) Hammerschmidt, Manhattan & his grandmother is Evelyn Korbe, Munjor.

1990 - John Lang, of Mark Kind's Miracle Ear franchise, has become nationally board certified along with having his state license as a hearing instrument specialist 1991 - Jami Reever, executive director of the United Way of the Flint Hills, helped to coordinate much of the fundraising and repairs made in Harveyville, Kansas after 2012 tornado damage when the city did not qualify for federal assistance. He is married to Kim '90 Simons.

1992 - Chad Creamer has been named to the KansasSports list as one of the best boys' basketball players in the 1990's.

1992- Bill DeWitt was honored as the recipient of the Outstanding High School Administrator's Award by the Kansas Music Educators Association and Monarch Band & Pop Singers instructor Kathy Amrein was awarded the High School Music Educators Award for 2012. This award is given to one elementary school, one middle school, one high school and one collegiate music educator and one high school administrator to honor their support of music education in Kansas. As most of you know, Bill has accepted an assistant principal/athletic director position at Lawrence High School in Lawrence, 1 Kansas. He was instrumental in the addition of 7'" and 8 grades at Thomas More Prep-Marian and has done great things for his alma mater during the past 4 years. Bill, you will be greatly missed I 1993- Joy (Leiker) Kopcha was pictured in the Hays Daily News donating some of her mother's fabric collection to preschool students at Holy Family It will be used for wardrobe Elementary School. costumes for a living Nativity program.

1994- Ann (Berens) Gottschalk was honored for her 10 years of service to Nex-Tech as a customer sales representative. She is married to Neil '90 Gottschalk.

1994 - Darren Schumacher, general manager of the Hays Carlos O'Kelly's Inspired Mex restaurant, was selected as the chain's Gold Medal Hospitality Winner for exemplary service in 2012 over 38 other Carlos O'Kelly's restaurants.

Names in the News 1995 - Christa (Giebler) Weigel was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor of allied health at Fort Hays State University. She is married to Dale '95 Weigel.

1996 - Eddie Perrett has accepted the position of finance director at TMP-Marian (and also serves on the Alumni Association of TMP-Marian Board). He is married to Tracy '96 (Gore) and they have two sons, Seth & Ben. 1997 - Class of 1997 raised over $300 for the St. Thomas More Society by selling !-shirts honoring Ken Haas during their reunion in the fall of 20121 Is this a challenge to our other classes out there?

2000 - J. Basil Dannebohm, along with fellow TMP alum Jeff '78 Colyer, Lieutenant Governor of Kansas & Representative Ronald Ryckman Sr., met in Topeka to declare the month of April as Parkinson's Awareness Dannebohm was diagnosed with Month in Kansas.

2003 - Luke Fairbank will be attending the FrancoAmerican Vocal Academy in Perigueux, France this summer, where he has a role in Offenbach's operetta, "La Perichole".

2003 -Jordan Keil, owner of Western Stone Co., was featured in the magazine "Das Haus", with his innovative manufactured stone product that can be customized for use in many different projects.

2003 - Matt Walker, along with off-duty Stamford firefighter Tom Elles, received the Meritorious Service Award for attempting to rescue two occupants of a vehicle that plunged into a Norwalk, New Jersey harbor last October.

2007 - Andrew Hammeke, after graduating from FHSU with a bachelor's degree in Health & Human Performance, has decided to become a priest and is a first-year pre-theology student at Conception Seminary College.

2007 - Cameron Werth, of Wendling Noe Nelson & Johnson of Topeka, has passed all parts of the Uniform CPA examination. He is the son of Mark '81 & Simone '82 (Braun) Werth.

2008 - Carrie Ellard returned to her alma mater to share her experiences of living in Germany for the past 4 years with Clara Walters' German classes this past fall.

2008 - Jason Kramer made the 2012 fall semester dean's list by achieving a grade-point average of at least 3.5 at Rockhurst University.

2009 - Drew Hertel, a senior at Wichita State University and basketball manager for the Wichita Shockers, was excited to see his team advance to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament He is majoring in integrated marketing communications and was unable to accompany the team during the playoffs due to his class and work schedule.

2009 - Maddie Holub, senior at Fort Hays State University, had a stellar year in softball I Her team easily had the greatest season in school history and produced the first two NCAA tournament victories in school annals.

Maddie, the lone senior, was the first player to be named both MIAA Pitcher and Player of the Year in the same season, all Central region first team and Central Region

Pitcher of the year and also earned Daktronics first team All-American honors by the nation's sports information directors and first team All-American by the NFCA, the coaches association.

Maddie was named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America Second Team and was also one of three finalists for the Ken B. Jones award, a yearly award given to one male and one female in the MIAA for their athletic, academic & service accomplishments. She finished 29-4 with a 1.03 earnedrun average with 26 complete games, 13 shutouts, three saves and 345 strikeouts in 224 innings, plus pitched seven no-hitters and two perfect games.

Her slats include a .426 batting average, 19 homers and 56 RBI. In total, Maddie set 12 single season records and finished with 33 career total records for career, single-season and single game marks.

What an AWESOME accomplishment! Maddie's parents are John Holub & Melissa '78 (Pfannenstiel) Holub.

2010 - Anne Drees & Braden '1 0 Dreiling, both seniors at FHSU, participated in the Model United Nations Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. They represented the nations of India & Australia with students from 50 other universities across the Midwest, attending almost 38 hours of meetings in 3 days. Anne also presented her original work, Men Above God, at the Sigma Tau Delta English Honor Society International Convention in Portland Oregon in March. Her paper was selected for presentation and discussion at the Questions of Justice Workshop and is a fictional short story about a dystopian society whose government does not value the lives of its vulnerable citizens.

2010 - Nathan Lawson was nominated for the Character of Champion Award for the Tabor College Soccer Team. He is the son of Tammy '89 (Myers) Lawson, nephew of Jodi '90 (Myers) Harkin and Angela '93 (Myers) Lachner & brother of Collan '14 Lawson.

2012 - Jenna Lang was a walk-on member of the record setting FHSU softball team this year, rising to the ranks of starting lineup, thanks to fellow teammate Maddie '09 Holub, the support of her parents, Terry '82 & Ruth Lang, and other family members.
