Arson the cause of Gardens fires OLICE and fire authorities are alarmed by a second fire which is believed to have been deliberately lit at the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens. Anyone with information relating to either or both fires is being urged to come forward and tell police what they might know. The fire, which caused more than $90,000 damage, was the second in a matter of weeks at the Gardens. It began around 5.30 to 6pm on the evening of Thursday 12 September. A rural fire officer was seriously injured attending the fire and had to undergo urgent surgery. In the first fire, almost certainly the work of an arsonist, the grass roof of the Gardens’ Bali Hut was set alight and the hut was destroyed. In the latest fire, in the machinery shed, a utility vehicle, ride-on mower and aluminium boat were totally destroyed and a new tractor was damaged.

The intensity of the fire was so great that the aluminium boat simply melted. All that could be seen following the blaze was the boat trailer on which it had been resting. Mulch that had been stored in a section of the shed was still being damped down 17 hours after the fire took hold. There appeared to be two separate locations within the shed where fires had been deliberately lit. Witnesses reported hearing voices, including that of a female, in the vicinity around the time the fire began. Police and fire authorities are clearly very worried by these incidents and fear that those responsible could strike again. “Arson is a criminal offence. It is irresponsible, reckless and dangerous. We need to catch the perpetrators as quickly as possible and that is why we are appealing to anyone with any information to come forward and let us know,” said Sgt Mick Jones, of Tamborine Mountain Police.

every day except Tuesday, from 11.30 am. Last orders will be taken each night at 8pm. At a sneak preview last week, an enthusiastic gathering of Mountain residents quickly gave it the thumbs up as they tucked into a tasty range of Japanese dishes which the more adventurous washed down with a glass or two of traditional sake rice wine. Tamborine Mountain News’ view: The new Japanese restaurant fills a food and wine void in our local community and should become a popular dining destination.

The Scent of Spring

NE of the signs of spring is the sweet scent of flowers. Most people find the fragrance of flowers uplifting, pleasing and attractive which is not surprising since attraction is the purpose and strategy of flower fragrance. Plants have both male and female parts in their flowers. For a seed and fruit to develop pollen has to be transferred from the stamen (male) to the stigma (female). This process is called pollination. Most plants are cross pollinators; pollen from one plant must be transferred to the stigma of another genetically different plant of the same species, in order to produce seed and fruit. Since plants are unable to make any deliberate movements, they must involve another agent or organism to move and transfer pollen from stamen to stigma. These organisms are called pollinators - most are insects, but birds and bats are also pollinators. To attract a pollinator, plants have to signal their location and readiness, provide an incentive for the pollinator to visit, ensure that the pollinator contacts and retains the pollen, and encourage pollinators which visit their own species and exclude those who do not. The main incentive for pollinators to visit flowers is to obtain food - sweet, protein-rich pollen may be the food source. A plant may also produce a food called nectar; it consists mainly of sugar. Two major cues plants use to communicate and advertise to pollinators are through the scent and colour of flowers. The process of pollination is vital to all forms of life on Earth but it is also vulnerable to human disturbance through pollution, habitat degradation and loss of pollinators. The loss of populations of pollinators such as

bats is often conveniently ignored. However in the long to medium term this loss will have serious negative consequences. It is now thought that plants may also use their attraction not only to attract pollinators but to draw in other organisms as seed dispersers. The creation of fragrances in flowers is a complex biochemical process by which genetically coded enzymes convert a wide variety of low molecular weight compounds into volatile biochemicals, including ketones, aldehydes, alcohols, phenylpropanoids, benzoic acids and terpenoids which evaporate into the air. All floral organs can emit fragrance compounds but petals are the main source of scent in most plants. Studies have shown that the appearance and scent of flowers make people feel happier, promotes friendlier social interaction and induce more positive moods; this is confirmed by the popularity of flowers as gifts, decoration and adornment throughout history and across cultures. The vast majority of commercial fragrances also have a floral top note. While humans’ intense attraction to the scent of flowers is indisputable, there is speculation as to the reasons, including evolutionary food and foraging association with edible pollinators and the resemblance to the scent of ripe fruit. Whatever the exact reason, plants have successfully manipulated humans to promote the pollination, cultivation and growth of numerous species of flowering plants. Dear Geoff,

The Jazz of Parenting -Pt 2

Last letter I wrote to you about parenting, an important if difficult subject. I offered the 10 commandments (the 10) as a good guideline for giving structure to your children for their thinking and acting. When your kids are young the 10 may seem too much for them to learn.

Jesus spoke of the two aspects of the 10, love for God and love for neighbour. That’s pretty simple to teach to very young children and should be modelled to kids from day one. It’s no good trying to live one way and teach your kids another; they will see right through it. They see you every day. They know how you think, they hear you speak and they see you act. Even if they are too young for analysing your thinking, speaking and acting they are absorbing the way you deal with life. So part of the jazz of parenting is continuing to practise your instrument .... loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength; and your neighbour as yourself. The apostle John makes an amazing comment on the link between love for God and love for people. After being very clear where love starts. ‘We love because he first loved us.’ (Demonstrated in Christ’s death for our sins); John says,

‘anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.’ .... Whoever loves God must also love his brother.’ 1 John 4:19ff.

As you think about God and his love for you, you will increase in your love for him and in your love for others. This does not go smoothly. Love for enemies is included. It is a lifelong (joyful) commitment to know God’s love and to grow in it. And it is a lifetime of learning how to love God and others. This begins with you and you pass it on to your children; through verbal teaching of the concepts as they mature, through doing the right thing in the thick of life, through a transparent love for God and others that is seen by your kids and steadily transferred to their minds and hearts.

Our kids are not computers that we program for specific behaviours at specific times. They are individuals created in the image of God ... they think and love and create and act. God gives us clear wisdom for life. Don’t forget to give it to your kids as they grow and are faced with the many challenges ahead. Your Brother, Kim Advertisement.

NAPLAN puts College in a class of its own

AMBORINE Mountain College has once again achieved impressive results in NAPLAN testing, with the Year 9 class of 2013 achieving above the Queensland and Australian mean averages in every facet of NAPLAN testing. The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual assessment of students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. As shown by the table on page 11, the College was above the state and national averages in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and numeracy. “It does show how well our students have done nationally,” said Principal Mrs June Melbourne. While it may seem quite an achievement for a school with a total of just 185 students in Years 8 to 12, Mrs Melbourne believes this is a major factor in its students’ success. “All our teachers are very dedicated and get to know the students very well, and because we know what to expect from our students we can help them to reach their full potential,” she said. “A lot of teachers do extension work

with the students and tutorials are available every afternoon for students who want to excel or feel they need some extra assistance.” While once again thrilled with the College’s results, Mrs Melbourne said that the NAPLAN results for Queensland overall should be interpreted with caution. She believes that when comparing the NAPLAN results of Queensland schools with those of the rest of Australia, people should realise that Queensland students are currently a year younger than their interstate counterparts, and are only in their second, rather than third, year of secondary school when sitting the Year 9 NAPLAN tests. “However, it does amplify our success,” said Mrs Melbourne. The NAPLAN results show just how far the College has come since 1995 when it began operating with a handful of students in the main pavilion at the local showgrounds. It moved to its current location in Beacon Road in 1997 and has grown from a house with a few buildings to a secondary school with leading-edge facilities.

Clockwise from top left: Singer Abi Chaloupka gave a great performance with her selection of rock favourites. Rosie Powell might have been volunteering in the kitchen but that did not stop her from shak’n’ all over. Volunteers Pam Hawthorne (left) and Vanessa Bull get ready to serve supper.

Cath and Owen Buckley, winners of the Monte Carlo. Pauline Keeley (left) and Barbara Fulcher get in the mood. Susie Fenton with son Freddie who played at the ball with the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra. Jess Klupfel and Ben Swinburne belt out another great rock tune.

Bernie’s ball a rocking success

More than 200 people packed into Vonda Youngman Community Hall for Bernie Klupfel’s fund-raising old-time rock ‘n’ roll ball. A wide-ranging cross section of the young and young-at-heart enjoyed a curious mixture of traditional ballroom dancing and various versions of rock. At the end of a fabulous night, everyone seemed to share the same thought: “Let’s do it again Bernie!” 12 – TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN NEWS VOL. 1362, 24 SEPTEMBER, 2013

Tamborine Mtn Police News ARSON AT THE BOTANIC GARDENS Our heartfelt condolences to the wonderful volunteers who live and breathe what we enjoy as the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens after the inexcusable actions of criminals who destroyed the shed and its contents to the value of about $90,000 on Thursday evening 12 September. It happened around 5.30 to 6pm and a female and male voice were heard at the scene indicating, we believe at this stage, two suspects at least involved. Please people, get your detective caps on as this is the second attack in two weeks (previously burned the Bali Hut) and we need to bring these offenders to justice. We will be patrolling the area as much as possible and hope that those of you living in the area of Kinabalu, Forsythia and environs look out for suspect individuals loitering around the gardens area. Please alert us or record details of vehicles or descriptions of youths (mobile phone cameras are the best).

by Sgt. Mick Jones, North Tamborine Police

BREAK AND ENTER AT TAMBORINE DREAMING, GALLERY WAK It seems the same night of the Botanic Gardens arson, offenders (female included) have scaled the back verandah of Tamborine Dreaming and jemmied their way in and stolen property. Included in the property stolen were distinctive ladies shirts as pictured above (diamante butterfly with Tamborine Mountain Australia). Anyone with information that could lead police to the offenders will have many on the mountain breathing with relief! We are also confident that forensic evidence located at the scene will help solve this matter.

STEALING FROM MOTOR VEHICLES – GOLF COURSE And again! Same night, at Golf Course Road. Two vehicles parked in an unsecured garage were ransacked and property was stolen including jewellery, wallets and credit cards. It appears that all the offences were committed by the same criminals. Unfortunately, this happens all too often on the Mountain. Rarely, however, are we dealing with local people - rather it is a case of the offenders visiting our beautiful community and leaving their grubby mark behind!

FUEL STOLEN FROM VEHICLE Syphoning fuel from two vehicles occurred in Caryota Court overnight on 14 September. However, we are pretty sure we know exactly who is responsible for this and happy to report that we may not arrest them for this, as they are no longer living in the area.

LET’S SOLVE THE ARSONS! We have experienced a few other problems these last few weeks which police are dealing with. Sad to report our good run of no crime has been suspended. We have new offenders to find, especially those responsible for the arson incidents, and again implore any person with knowledge of those responsible to contact us urgently. A fire officer was seriously injured responding to the latest fire and required urgent surgery. If that doesn’t raise the bar to a totally unacceptable level I don’t know what will. Sgt Mick Jones

NEW BUSINESSES Two new businesses have started up: • David McPhee has started Tours on Tamborine Mountain as a replacement to the excellent service previously provided by the late John Mackenzie. David is utililising a 13 -seater bus which can be booked for tours around the Mountain, airport, accommodation and railway transfers, private charters, weddings, formals and social events. A “Hop on and Hop off” style service is also offered, subject to availability, between 9.30am and 4.30pm. APPLICATION FOR WATER EXTRACTION REFUSED Council has refused an application from Pure Mountain Pty Ltd, which sought a development permit for a Material Change of Use to undertake commercial water extraction at 98-100 Bateke Road, Tamborine Mountain. During the 15-day public notification period council received 452 properly made and 43 not properly made submissions objecting to the application. Objections focused on the intensive nature of the proposed extraction operation, its inconsistency with and impact on the amenity of the local area, the impact of heavy vehicle traffic on local roads and residents. COUNCIL GRANTS The latest round of successful applicants for the first round of community grants has been announced, with 29 community groups receiving financial support totalling $35,755 and 20 organisations receiving in-kind support to the value of $500. Time short for business nominations IME is running out for residents and businesses to nominate for the 2013 Scenic Rim Business Excellence Awards. With less than two weeks left for public nominations, Mayor John Brent is urging people to show their support for their favourite business before it’s too late. Council has again partnered with the combined Chambers of Commerce to hold the third annual awards, which recognise and reward outstanding local businesses and individuals. Last year’s Business Person of the Year, Gary Poole from The Escarpment Retreat and Day Spa at Tamborine Mountain, said the award had enabled him to take better advantage of promotional opportunities for his business and the region. “To say the award has been beneficial for me would be an understatement. It’s an honour that I believe has helped to increase

A

the travel industry’s focus on The Escarpment as a leading escape experience,” said Gary. “The award has strengthened my credibility both locally and nationally and is integral to our overseas marketing presentations in the Asia and Pacific regions. “On a local level, I have partnered with other Scenic Rim businesses to help showcase our services and produce to the wider community.” Tamborine Mountain Chamber of Commerce President, Chris Kite, said the awards had become a highlight on the Scenic Rim calendar. Public nominations close on Friday 4 October. However, due to the long weekend, nominations will be accepted until the next business day. Business nomination forms may be submitted until Friday 11 October.

Perfect weather, combined with tireless efforts, before and on the day by our club members, ensured its success. Guests came from clubs in Wynnum, Boonah, Southport, Burleigh Heads/Palm Beach, Broadbeach, Murwillumbah and Eagleby (Twin Rivers Community Mallet Sports Club, a new club to our region). More than 40 entrants contested games of golf croquet and ricochet on five doublebanked courts. It was a great occasion to renew old friendships and start new ones. Letters to the Editor

Readers are reminded that letters to the editor must show full name of writer for publication.

There has been much research on fluoride and I have looked at several clinical trials that report both positive and negative effects on human health. However, those trials were performed using pharmaceutical grade fluoride. I could not find a clinical trial on the benefits of industrial waste fluoride on human health, which in part is the grade of fluoride that goes into our water system here in Australia. Even in its purest form there is no dispute that fluoride is a highly toxic poison. The debate is “what constitutes a safe dose?” And here lies the dilemma for me. If there is a “safe dose” it’s accurate dispensing is proven not to be manageable by human or computer. Suppliers cannot accurately control the exact dosage of fluoride that individuals receive via the water supply, nor can they monitor their response to that dosage, eg. the 2009 accident at the North Pine treatment plant.

The long-term effects are well researched and documented but still debated. To the best of my knowledge: • Melbourne’s silicofluoride comes from Japan. (Japan doesn't fluoridate) Regions along the Murray River get sodium fluoride from China. (China doesn’t fluoridate) • Queensland’s sodium fluoride did come from Belgium, which doesn't fluoridate. Now it's from China. • Geelong's fluoride is “home grown” – Incitec Pivot (fertilizer chemical company) supplies the waste material from their plant in Geelong. They can't dump the waste into Corio Bay, but into Geelong’s water supply is okay.

Many questions still remain to be answered on flouridation

I ask myself: “Is fluoridation mass medication?” The government could have continued to provide to communities free pure fluoride tablets at the right dosage for everyone to take if they chose to. Then it became a profit-making commodity, not something of human benefit, and safeguards went out the window. If some authority turned up in my home every time I consumed any food or drink containing water and gave me a fluoride tablet to swallow, I would be very aware I was being medicated. And so is everyone else whenever they turn on their taps or purchase any food that includes water in its finished product. You cannot rely on water filtration or drinking tank water to keep you fluoride free. Everyone, regardless of age, health, race or need, all receiving the very same dose of medication in town supplied water. Added links FYI. A special meeting of the Scenic Rim Ratepayers Association was held recently in Beaudesert. This meeting resulted in the election of the following office bearers: President, Bevan Pressler; Secretary, David Henderson; Treasurer, Amanda Hay. Committee members: Roland Lindenmeyer and Stuart Wright. As President, I make this solemn pledge to represent the ratepayers of the Scenic Rim Region to the best of my ability. I look forward to welcoming ratepayers and

interested parties to our future monthly meetings, held on the last Monday of the month at 7pm upstairs in the Logan and Albert Hotel, Beaudesert. Their concerns will be aired and thoroughly discussed and Council informed so as to assist them to better perform their duties to ratepayers. I look forward to fruitful and peaceful discussions with them and their officers. Bevan G. Pressler President, Scenic Rim Ratepayers Assoc.

As well as this the tropical conditions found in Queensland, make it difficult to maintain fluoridation equipment due to higher levels of corrosion caused by the wet climate. My research shows me that the fluoride in part that is used in drinking water is typically unrefined toxic silicofluoride waste, containing traces of other toxic substances such as arsenic, lead, cobalt and radioactive isotopes such as radium. Just imagine the toxic effect this would have on a human over time. This unrefined industrial waste is being placed into parts of our country’s drinking water, authorised by government and paid for by the people. What bothers me is that fluoride is a cumulative toxin – we excrete some and the rest accumulates throughout our body from our teeth, to our heart and brain.
