ANIELLE Robb-Whithead discusses the watercolour she has just purchased with artist Bruce Buchanan at the opening of his superb new exhibition at Marks and Gardner Gallery on Sunday. Originally trained in architecture, Bruce is inspired by the natural, urban and industrial environments. Paintings in his latest exhibition include colour-washed buildings, water gates and canals in Venice, and medieval hill towns in Tuscany. A striking contrast to these works are a number of Australian-focussed paintings, including atmospheric treescapes in Tasmania, a gold prospector’s hut in the Outback and an autumn treescape in the Brisbane Valley.

They will join thousands of other riders in a 200km ride over two days in southeast Queensland to raise funds that will directly benefit the Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR). One of Australia’s largest research institutes, QIMR is currently investigating the causes of more than 13 cancers including skin, prostate, colorectal, breast, ovarian, lung and lymphoma. “Times are tough for everyone at the

Health expo sorts the facts from the fads A USTRALIANS have become adept at piling food onto their plates, but not so good at balancing what they eat. That was the finding of the Australian Institute, which revealed that more than 90 per cent of adults did not eat enough vegetables and 49 per cent did not eat enough fruit. The $1 billion vitamins and supplements industry reflects an awareness of the need for better nutrition, and the Personal Health Choices Expo in August at the Tamborine Community Hall aims to sort the facts from the fads. Expo organiser Noel Page said the expo aimed to help people understand the deficiencies in their diets – which could increase the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and some cancers – and how these deficiencies could be countered. “There is so much confusion about food supplements and many people are using readily available synthetic products that will not be giving the results they seek,” he said. The NeoHealthNetwork is a local group whose members are dedicated to pursuing long-term health through whole food supplements such as those produced by GNLD. GNLD representative, Sarah Hamblyn, said the expo provided the opportunity for people to meet with and talk to people who

had been using whole-food products with their families for 25 years. “One of our family’s favourite GNLD supplements is the Calcium-Magnesium with Vitamin D,” she said. “We’ve used it for many reasons such as easing leg cramps, restless legs and growing pains. It’s helped with getting to sleep at night, increased the strength in our

nails and has a nice calming effect.” Admission to the expo, from 9am to 4.30pm on Saturday, August 17, is free. It includes talks by a series of speakers, on-screen video presentations, product displays and information on specific health issues from NeoHealthNetwork and GNLD representatives. For more information, phone 0413 126 830.

S

LIMMER, fitter, healthier – that’s how the 30 participants who took part in the recent MainFitness Body Transformation Challenge finished their 12-week course. At a rewards ceremony held at St Bernard’s Hotel the three top achievers were presented with their prizes. The biggest transformation was by Brigid who lost a total of 29.5 centimetres from her whole body; second was Julian who lost 28 centimetres, and third was Rebecca with a loss of 23.5 centimetres. Brigid won a three month gym floor and classes membership to MainFitness, Julian won a similar prize for one month, while Rebecca scored three 30 minute personal training sessions. MainFitness Manager Robert Schoch said: “ Not only did everyone see results in weight loss and physical transformation, they also made lifestyle changes which will stay with them long after the challenge has finished.” For anyone thinking of doing a similar course, there will be a 10week Summer Blitz starting 26 August, just in time to get your body into shape for the coming hotter months.

TMSHS is looking for a new Tuckshop Convenor to manage the day-to-day operations of the tuckshop for more than 650 students. This role will commence as 5 days per week and likely reduce to 4 days per week (24 hours in total) for 40 weeks each year, and requires the management of a team of staff and volunteers. A detailed description of the Tuckshop Convenor’s role is available from the School Administration Office by emailing dhard16@eq.edu.au. Community event liquor permit changes

F

UNDRAISERS like trivia nights and school fetes will no longer require a community liquor permit under new laws recently passed by the Queensland Government. The new amendment makes it easier for organisers to hold an event without the burden of over regulation and red tape. State Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause, said schools and community groups could now focus on raising funds instead of spending time filling out lengthy forms and paying unnecessary costs. “Events form an important aspect of a non-profit organisation’s fundraising program, while fetes provide a much needed boost in funding projects,” he said. “Organisers of small regional shows in our community will not be required to

apply for a community liquor permit under these new laws. “We do not live in a nanny state. This is about the government getting out of the way and letting communities enjoy themselves responsibly. “When organising an event, it can be helpful to plan ahead, so we have developed a guide and checklist.” “This guide covers all aspects of an event, from planning and consulting with your venue’s neighbours, to providing adequate food, and of course, ensuring responsible service of alcohol.” The new laws came into effect on July 1. To check if your event is eligible for the exemption and to access the guide, visit http://www.olgr.qld.gov.au/liquor/licensing /permits/community/index.shtml

Bioluminescence – living light

B

IOLUMINESCENCE is the production and emission of light by a living organism as a product of a chemical reaction. At an atomic level, bioluminescent light originates when a chemical reaction produces an electronic excited state which causes an electron to move up a level in its atomic orbit. When it decays and returns to its ground state, as it settles back into its usual orbit a photon, which is an elementary particle of light, is released. The basic chemical reaction in bioluminescence occurs between luciferin (a pigment) and luciferase (an enzyme). Luciferin reacts with oxygen and luciferase acts as a catalyst to the process which produces light. The terms luciferin and luciferase are generic since many different substances fulfill these functions, depending on the species. It is often adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and oxygen. The substances can be produced and housed within the organism or developed through a symbiotic relationship with light-producing bacteria. Most bioluminescent species occur in the ocean but there are a number of bioluminescent species in the local area, including earthworms, insects and fungi. Fireflies are actually carnivorous beetles of the family Lampyridae. In spring the adult male beetles take flight and flash their white light signals as a mating display to the females who remain on the ground. The females flash back a weaker signal to attract the flying males. The fireflies are able to regulate the emission of light by controlling the amount of air supplied to their cells. The ability to control light emission is dramatically demonstrated by some tropical firefly species, which gather

together in trees and bushes, and synchronise their flashes in a spectacular light show. Glow worms are not worms, but the larvae of a mosquito like fly which inhabits shady, protected places with high humidity, such as creek banks and damp rock faces. Glow worms build snares made of silk fibres, coated with beads of mucous. When night falls, the glow worms emit a pale blue-green light, which lures insects into the sticky threads of their trap. Fungi: There are a number of species of bioluminescent fungi which thrive and generate light where food, water, oxygen and temperature conditions encourage rapid growth. Fungi emit a luminous glow usually in the bluish-green portion of the spectrum. Some species are luminous mushrooms, while others that present in moist, decaying wood are known as fox-fire or fairy fire. Glowing rotting bark and wood have been observed since ancient times and were described by Aristotle; it was regarded as a mystery but is now known to be luminescent mycelium fungi feeding on the cell walls, proteins, and starches in moist wood. New bioluminescent species are still being discovered and the mechanisms and purpose are not yet understood. Although we now know that it is a chemical reaction, not mystical creatures, magic or the revels of fairies that produce the beauty of bioluminescence, there remains an enchantment about this luminosity which continues to fascinate. TRAVELLING PLACES with Gina Christmas conjures up so many images – backyard cricket and children hopping in and out of the pool ; roast turkey and all the trimmings, sitting by the fire sipping mulled wine while the snow gently falls outside or relaxing on a sundrenched beach. One thing is for certain there will be lots of food, and lots of laughs while getting together with friends or family. Here I am writing with 5 months to go until Christmas. It is surprising how many people have popped into the office over the last few days to talk about “where can we escape for Christmas” – maybe it is the talk of midwinter roasts on the Mountain that has encouraged people to think about the real deal. One of the benefits of escaping for Christmas is that you will be enjoying the festivities wherever you are in the world and usually without the hassle of catering for everyone! Whether you chose to go alone or as a couple and meet new people, travel with friends or join a family group of different generations, there are lots of options. Travel to Europe or North America where the Christmas decorations and cold weather encourage a great festive spirit. Combine a trip exploring Asia with a beach break; discover a new part of Australia, or sit back and relax on a cruise ship where everything is catered for. Wherever you are you will find fascinating local customs and ways to celebrate. I always collect Christmas decorations wherever I am and our tree is now covered with memories – some are quite bizarre! There is no point in waiting for a discount special over Christmas – this is the one time of the year when the entire world is on holiday and the deals just never come. In fact the longer you delay booking your holiday the costs just keep creeping up. Usually you can just make a deposit now to secure your trip and pay the balance later. Can’t you imagine waking up on Christmas morning without the thought of – oh dear, we have to cook for the hordes, or drive for miles? We have lots of great ideas for Christmas and New Year escapes so do come to have a chat at Travelling Places now.

S

TARTING with our crime report for the last fortnight: From 16 July to time of typing – NONE! Don’t worry we’re not resting on our laurels as the next crims will soon learn the trade or be bailed on parole and back on the streets but for this short time we have had a reprieve. Still, we want you all to be vigilant and keep reporting to us immediately any suspicious persons, vehicles and events. I still believe someone out there must know who stole the air-conditioning units from the North Tamborine Plaza stairway in late June, or at least suspect someone? A note under the front door of the station would be very cool. EAGLE HTS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH We recently enjoyed a morning tea with Neighbourhood Watch Area 1 Co-ordinators and some of their members (pictured above) at Eagle Heights who were ramping down their core activity. With modern social media, mobile phones, crime stoppers and the like, the hand delivery of their quarterly NHW newsletter is deemed defunct. Newsletters, however, can still be found at Tamborine Mountain Medical Practices at both the Eagle Heights and North Tamborine centres, Community Care in Southport Avenue, the Library and Post Office in North Tamborine, and Taste Buddies store at Mount Tamborine. About 20 years ago Bernie Miller and Paul Lyons started the group when clocks ticked slower, crime was almost non existent and the ripples of development had just started to pinch and tickle Mountain life. The group will continue to exist and act as contacts for resident inquiries and liaise with police, advocating crime prevention and watching out for their neighbours. 40KPH SCHOOL ZONES With school back please be aware of the 40 km/h zones relating to our schools. There are still a couple of months till the next school holidays in September, so keep in mind those morning and afternoon runs – the signage is very bright and plain to see. ANOTHER SCAM TO WATCH FOR Thanks to Dave Carter for a heads up on one of the latest scams. BEWARE the following email should you receive it! “From: ANZ<sms@aqualyze.co.uk> Date: 22 July 2013 9:44:47 AM To: YOUR EMAIL ADRESS

Subject: Call our office immediately! Your ANZ card is now blocked! Please have your card in hand and call security staff immediately at: (03) 8362 3233.” Please people: be aware of these types of scams. The first thing you should look for is the email address from where it has come – can you see the .co.uk up there in the from address – this is the first obvious sign it’s as dodgy as a two bob watch! Don’t be a fool when it comes to anything to do with bank account details or calls from persons professing to be from Windows or a computer company to fix your viruses. It’s all just another scam to get access to your banks and strip every cent you have. EXCELLENT DRIVING TIP A 36-year-old female had an accident several weeks ago. It was raining, though not excessively, when her car suddenly began to hydro-plane and literally flew through the air. She was not seriously injured but very stunned at the sudden occurrence. When she explained to the police officer what had happened, he told her something that every driver should know: never drive in the rain with your cruise control on. She thought she was being cautious by setting the cruise control and maintaining a safe consistent speed in the rain. But the police officer told her that if the cruise control is on, your car will begin to hydro-plane when the tyres lose contact with the road, and your car will accelerate to a higher rate of speed making you take off like an airplane. She told the officer that was exactly what had occurred. We tell our teenagers to set the cruise control and drive at a safe speed, but we don't tell them to use the cruise control only when the road is dry. POLICE CHARITY GOLF DAY FRIDAY 13 SEPTEMBER Planning for our annual charity golf day is currently under way. Details of the event will appear in local newspapers and on noticeboards. Nominate your teams a.s.a.p. We’re always seeking more sponsors and donations of goods or services, so if you’re able to help, please contact the station. Funds raised go to Careflight and the Defensive Driving Training Initiative for Grade 12 students. Stay safe out there Sgt Mick Jones

RATE NOTICES Your rate notice should now have arrived. If you have a question, please phone me. Please note Free Tree Day on Tamborine Mountain is Saturday 7 September. In addition, please note, if paying by BPay, you can only use cheque or savings accounts. This is due to the charges banks apply for credit card. HAVE YOUR SAY – SRRC PLANNING SCHEME DIRECTIONS PAPER The final date for submissions was Friday 26 July. A group of interested parties consisting of TMPA, PresCare, TMCC, Real Estate, Chamber of Commerce, TM Landcare and EHRA have developed a joint submission. The next step is the Community Workshops. I am seeking advice on the dates for these workshops across the shire. WASTE TRANSFER STATION NEW OPERATING HOURS The change in operating hours of the waste transfer stations across the shire will commence on 30 July. Tamborine Mountain’s station will be closed on Wednesdays and the hours of operation for the other days will be 9am to 5pm. ENERGEX I had an interesting visit from Energex last week and we discussed overhead wires and tree clearing. There are three types of wires: • bare wires – at most risk from interruption from branches etc. • covered wires – at medium risk, but significantly improve reliability, and • bundled which, like covered above, are at medium risk. Much of the Mountain, on main feeder routes, has been converted to covered and bundled, and Energex should be congratulated for their efforts in this regard. As far as tree clearing is concerned, Energex is governed by the Electricity Act. They are not allowed to trim trees in an overly aggressive manner but do have to trim at a certain distance from the wires in a rectangular shape to maintain safety. The distances from the wires vary according to the type of wires. Scenic Rim Regional Council and Energex recognise they both have responsibilities for the management of vegetation located near electricity infrastructure, and have a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen the cooperative working relationships between Council and Energex at both operational and strategic levels in order to improve outcomes for the community. However it should be noted that vegetation management outside of Energex’s scope on private property is the responsibility of the property owner, and it is highly recommended that you seek the services of a professional tree lopper. Contact with overhead powerlines can be deadly, so please remember to always look up and live. As we drove around the Mountain, the Energex representative was very happy with the progress being made by their teams to secure, as best possible, our electricity supply. However, we love our trees and must accept that, on occasions, they will cause a loss of power. Get your emergency plan in place so that you can survive a few days without power. MOBILE PHONE RECEPTION If you are experiencing poor mobile phone or internet reception, I have been advised of a company which may offer you a solution. It is called Comnet and it provides aerials and patching leads. I am using an aerial on my roof to improve my wireless service and someone else has one to improve their mobile phone service in Forest Park. You can contact them on www.comnet.com.au or phone 02 98995700. CONSULTATION The next consultation in the library will be on Monday 5 August, 4pm to 5.30pm. I am also available for one-on-one meetings at your convenience. My contact details are: Home: 07 5545 0223; Mobile: 0423 931 075; Email: npw1@sctelco.net.au; nigel.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au

Councillor’s Comment NADIA O’CARROLL – DIVISION 2

The referendum on the constitutional recognition of local government On election day you will be asked to vote on a referendum that seeks to make a small, but necessary change to the Constitution to secure the continuation of direct federal funding to local government for vital local projects. Is the referendum necessary? YES. Our Constitution was framed in the late 1890s to federate six colonies. The concept of local government was in its infancy and consequently this tier of governance was not recognised, with the result that within the Constitution there is no authority for the Federal Government to provide financial assistance directly to local government. Recent legal challenges and High Court decisions have created pressure to formalise the current funding arrangements. Has the Federal Government already directly funded local government? YES. For more than a decade the Federal Government has invested billions of dollars in local community projects such as roads, sporting facilities, halls and infrastructure. The referendum is preserving an existing arrangement; it is not creating change. Has the Federal Government funded projects in the Scenic Rim? YES. Since 2008 almost $12.5 million direct funding from the Federal Government has provided infrastructure, roads and community projects such as Zamia Theatre and Tamborine Mountain sports complex. Are Federally funded projects subject to public scrutiny and due process? YES. Direct funding actually means fewer layers of government and less political interference. Will this change provide certainty about funding for local councils? YES. If this referendum does not succeed, funding for many important local projects will be at risk. Will my support for this referendum help keep funds flowing to my local area to benefit me and my community? YES. So on referendum day write YES for Constitutional Recognition of Local Government. OU don’t have to make a scarecrow to take part in Tamborine Mountain’s Scarecrow Festival this year – you can become one and join in the fun. The festival, now in its sixth year, is growing like topsy with a program packed with events, beginning on Friday, October 18. The invitation is out for anyone wanting to get in touch with their ‘inner scarecrow’ to dress up and join in the fun. It’s not too early to plan your entry for the Discovery Trail, on Friday, October 18, when scarecrows will be competing for attention and prizes. This year’s festival will for the first time feature a Main Street party in the North Tamborine shopping precinct, where visitors and locals can enjoy impromptu performances and musical items. The fun will continue on Saturday, October 19, both on Gallery Walk and Main Street, with a highlight being the afternoon Kids for Kids Concert at the Zamia Theatre for eight to 12-year-olds. That evening, Transition Tamborine will hold a bush dance at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre, following in the footsteps of last year’s successful bush bash. Sunday will be another full day of scarecrow spotting, with some clever and funny characters hanging out in trees or peering over fences sure to come to life. The weekend concludes with the prize-giving at the Tamborine Mountain Brewery at 4.30pm where the food and music will continue into the evening.

Fundraising idea a corker

A

fundraiser for Griffith University’s School of Glycomics is likely to keep raising money for the next 18 months, thanks to a corker of an idea from Cedar Creek Estate. The $4 net profit from each of the 7500 bottles of the Tamborine winery’s new chocolate port, aptly titled Another Brew, will go towards the university until the vintage sells out. If swift sales at the recent lunch at Cedar Creek Estate, which raised more than $5000 on the day, are any indication the vintage will last only 18 months. Outback artist, Arthur Hamblin, donated a large scale painting of the image on the bottle label, worth $7500, that was presented to a lucky purchaser of the port. Arthur, who was among special guests at the lunch, with his wife, June, had painted the original as a miniature. Also present at the fundraiser were the University’s Chancellor, former Queensland Governor, Leneen Forde, and former Queensland Premier, Rob Borbidge, now Chairman of the School of Glycomics. The School of Glycomics is the only one of its kind in Australia and only one of six in the world. Its research into carbohydrate chains, glycans, may help solve the medical mysteries of cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases, inflammation and immune disorders.

SRRC libraries launch digital lending service

S

CENIC Rim library members can now browse and borrow best sellers anytime, anywhere, thanks to a new digital lending service. BorrowBox is an online application that enables users to borrow, download and enjoy eBooks and eAudiobooks from their local library. The application incorporates a dedicated eBook reader and eAudiobook player, allowing users to read or listen to their favourite titles wherever they go. Library members can use the service online or download the free BorrowBox mobile application available on Apple iOS and Google Android devices. Mayor John Brent said: “We have almost 17,500 library members in the Scenic Rim, many of whom will benefit from the whole new level of accessibility and freedom this technology provides. “Library patrons can already make use of iPads and free wi-fi internet at all Scenic Rim libraries, including the mobile service, in addition to dedicated terminals for internet access. “BorrowBox is the latest addition to the libraries’ current collection of online e-resources available to members.” Other online library resources include digital magazines, language courses and adult education. Council, in partnership with the State Government, will invest $225,000 in the renewal of print and electronic library resources over the coming year. This forms part of a $1.58 million total investment in the provision of library services throughout the region during the next 12 months. For further information on BorrowBox or other online library e-resources, contact your local library or visit www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/libraries.

Tools stolen from car after accident

T

AMBORINE Mountain driver Norm Mossop swerved to miss a kangaroo on the Tamborine-Oxenford Road last week, clipped a power pole and ended up several metres down an embankment. His car was extensively damaged in the night-time incident but he was thankful that he had escaped uninjured. When he returned to his car the next morning, however, he was dismayed to find that all his tools in the boot, along with the amplifiers for his stereo, had been stolen. He estimated their total value at approximately $1000.

“It’s bad enough when you see what has happened to your pride and joy, but then to lose everything like this – what sort of mongrels are they?” he asked. As if that was not enough, when Mr Mossop arranged to have the car removed on Thursday, he left the car’s ignition key unattended on the top of a wheel for about an hour for the tow truck operators, only to have it stolen as well. “It’s unbelievable. What did they want they key for? The car was undriveable,” he said.

OOD in the library is usually frowned upon, except during the recent Eat Local Week, when there were smiles all round as ‘insanewiches’ proved a school holiday hit. Like Oliver Twist, parents and children who experimented with a range of breads, low-fat spreads and nutritious sandwich fillings at Tamborine Mountain Library were asking for more. The good news is Arne Lange (left), who was assisted by volunteers Janny Goris and Robyn Ashwin (right) in transforming the library into a delicious deli, is already planning another ‘insanewiches’ event for Eat Local Week next year.

SCENIC RIM REGIONAL COUNCIL RATE RISES UNSUSTAINABLE

The only purely 100% Australian Funeral Company and Crematorium Winner Qld Seniors Excellence Award Enquiries Welcome

5593 4777

How wonderful to see the Mayor’s Message overflowing with terms like “long-term financial sustainability” and “financially responsible”. Mr Brent might see things a little differently if, like us poor residents, he was on the wrong end of his latest rates notice. My rates, like most people’s, have risen again by more than double the CPI. Six years in a row now I have suffered more than double CPI rises in my rates. Six years in a row! OK, you've lost some state and federal money, it must be lovely to be able to pass the problem straight on to us. Maybe I should go to my boss and tell him my Council has slugged me with a huge rate rise again so I’m sorry, but you’ll have to pay me more money. No, that doesn't work for us poor people in the real world. I’ve been trying to sell my house so that

I can move into a council area that shows some “long-term financial sustainability” towards its residents. Unfortunately although people can afford my property they haven’t got enough for a down payment on the rates. Over 60 percent rise in my rates over the last six years against less than 20 percent rise in the cost of living. No Sir, that is not sustainable. Interestingly the valuation of my land has decreased by 14 percent in the last three years. If things continue like this my rates will actually exceed the value of my land in the not too distant future, at which point I can pick up my house on my back like a snail and abandon my worthless block of land. Will I vote to give Council more say over its revenue-raising at the upcoming referendum? Take a guess. Mike Davis

Tamborine Mountain Tennis Club has received a grant of $31,700 from the Gambling Community Benefits Fund to construct toilet facilities at the courts in Beacon Road. The ability to provide toilet and changing facilities at the club will allow increased participation in tennis by the community, club members and visitors. The club is presently expanding competitive tennis through the inauguration of club championships. It has a very popular doubles competition on Monday nights and social tennis on Wednesday nights and Sunday afternoons. It also now has professional coaching for both juniors and adults. I would like to thank everybody from the club who worked so tirelessly to make this application a winning one. Particular thanks go to Rhonda Nugent and Carrie Hillyard for writing the successful submission. Thanks also to Jon Krause, member for

Beaudesert, for his personal interest in our application and for his commitment to community sport in general. Thanks go to Councillors Nigel Waistell and Nadia O’Carroll and Principal of TM State High School, Tracy Brose, who all wrote generous letters of support for our application. We would also like to thank the Scenic Rim Regional Council which has supported the club from its beginnings through the lease of land, assistance in building the tennis courts and now for its kind consideration of this further addition of amenities to the clubhouse. Council has provided additional assistance of $1000 from the Community Grants Program for purchase of tennis balls and other equipment. Henry Rich President, TMTC Letters continue next page.

Council advocates Yes vote in referendum

C

OUNCIL has thrown its support behind the Yes campaign for the constitutional recognition of local government in Australia. “At the upcoming election, Scenic Rim voters will not only cast a ballot to help determine the future government of Australia, but they will also be asked to vote in a national referendum on a change to the wording of the Constitution,” Mayor John Brent said. “The proposed change will amend Section 96 of the Constitution to formalise the Federal Government’s ability to provide direct funding to councils. “This is simply recognition of wellestablished arrangements. The Commonwealth has a long history of providing financial assistance directly to local councils, but this power is not specifically spelt out in the Constitution. “As a result, recent decisions of the High Court have raised legal uncertainty about

the extent of the Commonwealth’s authority to provide this vital funding. “If the referendum doesn’t succeed then Federal funding for things like road and bridge improvements, libraries, sports facilities and community centres in the Scenic Rim will be under direct threat. “Already this financial year, Council has had to grapple with the impact of Federal funding cuts just as a result of budgetary pressures. A future challenge to the Commonwealth’s powers could turn these taps off altogether.” Cr Brent said Council had received almost $12.5 million in direct funding from the Federal Government since 2008. “These funds have helped to deliver important projects throughout the region, from vital roads and infrastructure to community-building initiatives such as the Tamborine Mountain sports complex,” Cr Brent said. THANKYOU, MAL CUNNINGHAM – YOU WILL BE MUCH MISSED Letters continued I wish to add my sentiments to those expressed recently, regarding the retirement of Malcolm Cunningham as conductor of the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra. My immediate reaction was one of sadness, and then loss, having been a devoted fan of his wonderful musical talent, his delightful sense of humour, and amazing dedication to the task of coordinating the particular skills of a

diverse group of amateurs into a whole – no doubt not an easy task. In this, he clearly succeeded in giving much pleasure to his many devoted fans, for which I, and I’m sure many others, are truly appreciative. I wish you and Elizabeth, your most loyal and supportive fan, peace and contentment in your welldeserved retirement. You may now have time to “smell the roses”. Malcolm, we will miss you. GOAT TRACK IS BACK, BUT STILL PRESENTING LONG DELAYS Congratulations to all those who have done an excellent job in repairing the ‘Goat Track’ and re-opening it well in advance of the original target date. Unfortunately, however, drivers still have the frustrating experience of waiting (it seems for ever) at red lights even though no traffic is coming in the opposite direction. I am sure that modern technology can devise a monitoring system as follows: At one end the green lights are on for (say) a period of 20 seconds, during which the

number of vehicles passing into the singlelane zone is counted. Those lights then turn red, and a signal is sent to the lights at the other end which count the number of vehicles leaving that section of road. As soon as the number leaving is the same as the number entering, the red lights there can turn green, and there is no danger of vehicles meeting in the narrow stretch. Such a system would save time and a lot of potential ‘road rage’. John Noble TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN NEWS VOL. 1358, 30 JULY, 2013 – 19

Bunya Pine Cone – Araucaria bidwillii – Bishopp Park, Eagle Heights

B

unya pine cones drop in January and February. This one weighed 6.42kg and was displayed for a while in the Information Centre at Doughty Park. Some years after I filmed the cone, the council placed warning signs in Bishopp Park, which contains several Bunya Pines, stating that the cones weigh up to 10kg. They contain between 50 and 100 nuts which are edible, though in my experience, an acquired taste. The trees here tend to be lone examples and are unlikely to grow to the 30-45 m height of the pines in the Bunya Mountains which have to compete for sunlight in the confines of rainforest.
