‘Goat Track’ re-opens ahead of schedule T AMBORINE Mountain-Canungra Road – the ‘Goat Track’ – has reopened to traffic following a $1.5 million project to repair the severe damage caused by ex-tropical cyclone Oswald in January. Re-construction of the section where severe landslip occurred has been completed by Transport and Main Roads ahead of schedule. It was originally anticipated the road would not be reopened until next month. Around 26,000 tonnes of rock fill was trucked in to stabilise the slope of the mountain. The new section of road is now wider than the original. The ‘Goat Track’ is a vital link between Tamborine Mountain and Canungra and its five-month closure has caused considerable disruption and inconvenience for business, workers, essential services, Army personnel and students. Its re-opening will be particularly welcomed by business in both communities which in some cases have been significantly affected. State Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause, said the nature and complexity of the damage in a narrow working area meant that Transport and Main Roads had no choice but to close the road to all traffic during the re-construction. “The team worked hard to come up with a solution to reopen the road to traffic as soon as possible, and from start to finish it

Around 26,000 tonnes of rock fill were used to stabilise the collapsed portion of the road.

was fast-tracked,” he said. “Although the closure of the road was an inconvenience for some people in the community, it meant the works could be completed quicker. “We also had some favorable weather which helped to speed up the project. “I thank the Main Roads staff and contractor for the great work they did to repair the road and re-open it ahead of schedule. I’d also like to thank all the local residents for their patience, particularly those living on the ‘Goat Track’.

Trees removed at road black spot

T

RANSPORT and Main Roads Department (TMR) has removed six large trees and some smaller trees over a section of about 80 metres on Tamborine Mountain Road, near Tamborine. This follows a spate of accidents at the location over a number of years. A TMR spokesperson said: “The department is also arranging for additional advisory signage to be installed. “Further investigations will be carried out to determine if improvements to the road surface, or installation of guard rail, could benefit road safety at this location.”

In addition to housing all the traditional fire-fighting resources, the facility includes a training and meeting area, communication hub, weather station, kitchen, showers and toilets. ORE women than ever before soon will have the opportunity to access breast screening through BreastScreen Queensland. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said: “Women aged between 50 and 74 will be able to have their screenings performed by BreastScreen Queensland. Previously only women aged between 50 and 69 were eligible for the screening process. “Queensland recently has implemented a successful rollout of digital mammography technology across all BreastScreen Queensland services. “The State Government has also increased the number of fixed and

mobile screening facilities to meet population growth in Queensland. “These facilities will ensure Queensland is well prepared to support the additional women who will have access to breast screening.” Mr Krause said BreastScreen Queensland aimed to screen at least 70 per cent of women in the targeted age group every two years. A referral from a doctor is not required and the service is free. The increased service will receive funding through the Federal Government’s National Partnership agreement on expansion of the BreastScreen Australia Program.

Orca – the black-and-white Dolphin

O

RCAS (Orcinus orca) are cetaceans, toothed whales, and the largest member of the dolphin family. They are warm blooded, air breathing, social, intelligent mammals with highly developed brains four times the mass of the human brain. Males can reach a length of nine metres and weight of 10 tonnes and females 8.5 metres and 7.5 tonnes. Orcas have robust bodies with a distinct black and white pattern, and dorsal fins of up to two metres. Formidable apex predators, Orcas are the fastest marine mammal capable of swimming speeds of more than 56kph and are equipped with 10 to 13 pairs of strong, interlocking conical teeth. Although Orcas are widely distributed and are found in all oceans from polar to tropical, recent studies indicate that their populations are far less than expected. There is only one species of Orca; however there are distinct races which are genetically different as well as displaying different lifestyles, appearance, behaviour, acoustics, calls, diets, prey and social structure. The populations can be divided into resident, transient and offshore pods which may live in the same areas but avoid each other and do not interbreed. Orcas are long lived – females may live for more than 80 years – and are highly social. Resident pods are stable matrilineal family groups consisting of a number of generations which stay together for their entire lives under the leadership of a matriarch. They are very vocal, predominantly fish hunters. Transient pods are related but less stable, roam widely and are less vocal, probably as a consequence of requiring silence to hunt intelligent marine mammal prey such as

dolphins and seals. Offshore pods roam farther from shore, hunt a range of prey and travel in larger pods but little is known of them. Orcas use sound to communicate and to perceive their environment through echo location. Their vocalisations – clicks, whistles and pulsed calls can be as loud as a jet engine. Calls are stereotyped for individual pods, forming a distinct dialect for each pod to allow its strongly bonded members to keep in contact. In the wild, Orcas, although capable of easily killing humans, have not attacked people, but the favour has not been returned with Orcas threatened by prey depletion, habitat loss, hunting, chemical pollution, drift netting, noise pollution, entanglement and capture. As apex predators Orcas bioaccumulate chemical pollutants including fire retardants such as PCBs and PBDEs, a deadly persistent legacy. Dr Ingrid Visser’s research has proved, that even in New Zealand, Orcas show a high level of contamination as a result of consuming polluted prey. Capture for marine parks has killed many Orcas over the years; currently 46 are captive worldwide. Confining intelligent, social, echo locating, wide ranging animals alone in small concrete pools to perform demeaning tricks not surprisingly causes stress, disease, shortened lifespan, self harm and aggression. Tamborine Mtn Police News by Sergeant Mick Jones, North Tamborine Police

Breakthrough as undercover action nabs two break-in suspects

G

REAT to see folk are keen to be on guard and I am very happy to respond where possible to public suggestions from our valued citizens and promise to accommodate as best I can. Here goes my first attempt and will strive to do my best. Future suggestions can be made to me personally or by mail or email to jones.michaelj@police.qld.gov.au Please don’t swear, as the security scanner will block the email and it won’t get through. We have experienced a spike in burglaries, particularly in the Eagle Heights area, with three homes burgled in Magnetic Drive this year and a number of other homes in the Eagle Heights neighbourhood over the past few months. Good to see word of mouth works and people are talking about it. With the police news being published each edition of Tamborine Mountain News I thought I was doing OK keeping people posted, especially describing exactly how the crims were doing it and what was happening, but alas I can obviously do better. The good news is we had a fantastic result on Tuesday 9 July as a result of a locally run undercover operation targeting these very burglaries, resulting in a ‘caught in the act’ arrest of two 20-year-old male criminals who were breaking into a house in Jourdana Drive, Wongawallen, with a stolen vehicle parked outside. The breakthrough we had been waiting for was a result of the fast thinking actions of a dear lady at Hilltop Chapel who was confronted with the very situation I have been talking about in the last number of police news articles. Two men drove into her driveway and when confronted gave a cock and bull story about having car troubles. She recorded the rego, rang police and bingo! Police were nearby in an unmarked car and by the end of the day, after a full-scale bush chase and search with helicopters, dogs and our local boys, we had both criminals back behind bars (both were on parole from prison!). These two are the main suspects for all the recent burglaries we have been experiencing on the mountain, including Magnetic Drive, and I’m very nervously waiting to see if I’m right! Unfortunately, all property stolen is invariably pawned or traded. Police did, and do, door-knock at our break-in locations and will continue to do so. We do not, however, have the grace of time and resources to knock on every door in a street. Rather, we tell the householders we do visit near a crime to please pass on the information to their neighbours and always request that the public call us any time regarding suspect vehicles and people. Talk about it to everyone people so that everyone knows. As I said in the last news article, a

geographical map with all the incidents is available to every member of the public at: QPS website http://www.police.qld.gov.au/ Please Read the last news article I wrote for Tamborine Mountain News on 2 July for instructions on how to do this. I will also be reporting soon about the imminent launch this month of another website called MyPoliceLogan (we are part of the Logan District) which is another new tool we will have for communicating current issues, trends etc with the community. Also we have our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/crimestoppersqld I totally agree with the suggestion that we publish details of crimes and new incidents that we may need assistance with and will start with the following incidents that have occurred or been reported in the last two weeks: Stealing from motor vehicle at Eagle Heights: Between 2pm and 10pm on 27 June 2013 offender/s have stolen an apple IPAD from front passenger seat of a silver Peugeot parked on Eagle Heights Road or Wasatch Court, Mount Tamborine. Wilful damage of public toilets at Tamborine Memorial Hall: Occurred between 29 June and 1 July. Some morons have smashed the cistern and holding tanks of the public toilets in a mindless act of criminal damage at Tamborine. Enter and Stealing from storage/stairwell at the Plaza Shopping Centre cnr Beacon and Main Western, North Tamborine: Occurred sometime between 11 June and 8 July 2013. Offender/s have used bolt cutters to cut padlock and open the stairwell door of the premises. Offender/s have gained entry and have removed four air conditioners and two indoor and two outdoor air conditioner units, Actron brand. There were three burglaries in this period also for which we have arrested two suspects, as previously mentioned. I would love to hear from any witnesses or people who have had suspects knocking on their door or located on their property and when confronted given a story about seeking directions etc. It will all the more help us to tie down criminals like the two recidivists we caught on Tuesday. Any information on the above or new crimes or druggies, hoons, you name it, we’ll take what action we can! Please call North Tamborine Police 07 5545 3473 or Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or email me. Stay safe good people and see you out there somewhere. (PS: Police Charity Golf Day is on Black Friday. 13 September 2013)

GOAT TRACK The best news of this week is that the Goat Track is open. I know that a number of businesses on the Mountain will benefit from this, plus parents, tourists and, of course, the bikers. I would like to thank the Government for its efforts and the local member, Jon Krause, for his support. We can now look forward to a very rewarding Tour de Tamborine and this will also assist the Tamborine Mountain Show, 21 September, Springtime on the Mountain, 27-29 September and the Scarecrow Festival, 18-20 October. RATE NOTICES Rate notices were issued on 15 July and they have reflected the rate rise of 6.90 per cent. However, as explained previously, the effect of three-year averaging on land valuations will see many people on the Mountain paying less than 6.90 per cent and some will pay less than last year. If you have a question, give me a call. HAVE YOUR SAY – SRRC PLANNING SCHEME DIRECTIONS PAPER Council currently has three planning schemes and the intent is to amalgamate these three schemes into one. Council is now seeking community views to inform the Planning Scheme Directions Paper and build on local resources and knowledge. Specifically, Council is seeking input into the development of four land use strategies in relation to rural, residential, industrial and retail and commercial land uses. The feedback forms are available in the library or at www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/have-your-say. The final date for submissions is Friday 26 July. I urge all residents with a view to submit a submission. WASTE TRANSFER STATION OPERATING HOURS The change in operating hours of the waste transfer stations across the shire will commence on 30 July. Tamborine Mountain’s station will be closed on Wednesdays and the hours for the other days will be 9am to 5pm. FREE BUS SERVICE The free bus service has been amended. Council has discontinued the service from the Mountain to the Coast and, instead, has instigated a service, which commenced on 4 July, to Beaudesert and Boonah on some Thursdays and Saturdays (set dates). For details, please phone the Transport Coordinator on 07 5545 1139 or visit www.scenicrimtransport.com or visit the library. Council will review the effectiveness of this service after 6 months. REPORTING OF FAULTS OR REQUESTS If you wish to report something to Council, you have a number of options. The best option is to visit the library and speak to the Customer Service Officer. Other options are to: • Contact me and I will report it for you; or • Phone Council on 07 5540 5111 and you will be put through to a Council officer. Whichever option you choose, please ensure that you are given a reference number. Religion and Atheism Dear Geoff, In recent decades there has been a lapse in the cultural memory of the Western nations. I remember when Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who now seems like a museum piece suspended in time, spoke about the disasters of soviet style atheism as ‘men have forgotten God’. Our cultural memory has selectively remembered some of the downsides of religion, particularly of the Judeo-Christian variety. But we have forgotten that a great deal of the good things we enjoy in our society have come from our religious heritage. I find it intriguing that a country like China, which admits the general lack of moral direction in the younger generation, has many intellectual leaders who can see the effect that the Christian faith has had on the freedoms developed in the West. So they are looking hard at Christianity. I do not mean to imply that this is a political policy, but it is an area that many academics are exploring as they have grown weary of the promises of an atheistic approach to political theory and practice. On the other hand, we have popularist scientists and philosophers in the West who are no longer developing deliberative arguments against religion (Christianity), but are happy just to simply mock and jeer. Dialogue? Why bother. There is little engagement with the substance of the Christian faith or

12 – TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN NEWS VOL. 1357, 16 JULY, 2013

with the fact that there are multitudes of scientists and philosophers who still do ‘believe’. There is little reflection, if any, on the long- term historically verifiable results of atheism. Have we forgotten the unspeakable murder of more than 100 million people, just last century, by powerful well-spoken charismatic ‘man/beasts’? What did they have in common? Language, culture, religion? No, they were atheists who were convinced of their natural ability to rule and reign according to their own dictates. ‘The evil conceits of their minds know no limits’ (Psalm 73). And they ‘practised what they preached’. This negative reflection on the results of sustained atheism working its way through political science and practice is not meant to be a justification of the atrocities committed in the name of religion. But it is difficult to see how atheistic principles, which ultimately are autonomous and relative, are violated by any human activity. Isn’t it at least worth reflecting on the fact that in no century (that I am aware of) have so many died according to the plans and power not of committed religionists, but committed atheists. ‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you’..... comes from the Bible not the mind of atheism. Grants for environmental projects

A

PPLICATIONS are now open for Council’s Environmental Grants Program, with $77,000 funding on offer for projects that benefit the local environment. Mayor John Brent said the program aimed to encourage the community to take an active role in conserving the environment. “Community members are invited to apply for funding for projects that support and improve the economic sustainability of the region through environmental stewardship,” said Cr Brent. Projects that may be eligible for funding include: • run-off (sediment) reduction and water quality improvement • enhancement of our natural environment • tree planting and land restoration • bush regeneration, and • community environmental awareness. Deputy Mayor Virginia West said the program had funded a number of beneficial environmental initiatives in the past. “This program is one of the ways Council is able to support grassroots projects that achieve real on-ground results to help preserve our precious natural environment,” she said. Applications for the Environmental Grants Program close on Friday August 9. Application forms and guidelines can be found on Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/environmental-grants For further information contact Council’s environment team on 5540 5444.

W

ITH winter right on us, our appetites turn to steaming soups rich in carrots and peas, to baked root vegetables, to broccoli lavished with garlic butter and pine nuts. The Tamborine Mountain residents who lease plots in the Bungunyah Community Gardens know the pleasures of growing their own vegetables all year round. We get double the benefits: not only the satisfaction of nurturing our crops organically so that they nurture us, but also the exercise that comes from forking over our rich moist soil (it’s chocolate for plants), of working alongside other gardeners, and of sharing tips and seeds and the odd lettuce or bunch of silver beet that are surplus to requirements. Some of us also lease a plot with a friend or neighbour – to halve the not very arduous work of planting and feeding our crops and also to share in the harvest. If you’ve never grown even a radish before it’s a great way to learn on the job. If you’re an old hand at vegetable growing but don’t have enough good soil or sunlight or water (or a handy supply of mulch and fertilisers), it’s a great way to share your know-how with others as you grow your own. If you’d love to try it out but you lead a busy life – why not join up with a friend to share a plot? Several plots are available now. Lease one and you could soon be planting spring seeds and seedlings – bok choy, beans, beetroot, capsicums, carrots, cucumber, eggplant, lettuces, rocket, squash, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and zucchini and more. To discuss joining up for a modest weekly fee of $6 for a 20 square metre plot, contact Kerrie Guy of Bungunyah Manor by email (Kerrie@bungunyahmanor.com.au) or phone on 5545 1044 / 0408 734 617. We thought we were looking at caterpillars, not the larvae of an insect, which, despite its name, is not a fly but a relative of wasps. There were dozens of larvae bunched together. They alternated between periods of inactivity and of what resembled determined jockeying for position. The larvae are plant feeders. Sawflies occur worldwide and pose no danger to people. GROUNDWATER PROTECTION NEAR POWER PARADE Bob Frohm’s letter, “Water opposition ‘baseless’” (TMNews 2/7) is incorrect. Mr Fohm selectively refers to part of the 2011 Queensland University of Technology report on groundwater abstraction on Tamborine Mountain. I agree that the 2011 QUT, and more recent studies, have found that commercial groundwater abstraction, such as by Gillion Pty Ltd at Power Parade, is only a small proportion of the average groundwater recharge from rainfall recharge. But Mr Fohm incorrectly concludes that the opposition to Power Parade commercial groundwater abstraction is baseless. This is apparently because only some 4 per cent of rainfall is pumped from groundwater for domestic, commercial and irrigation uses. The key issue is that 4 per cent of rainfall figure only refers to a regional average where all rainfall recharge is assumed to be available to replace groundwater pumping. However, groundwater pumping impacts cannot be accepted on the basis of a regional average. In the case of Power Parade, the commercial groundwater abstraction from one lot is hundreds of times greater than for normal domestic groundwater use. Groundwater recharge in the local area depends on unique local conditions. The key outcome is that to prove that commercial groundwater abstraction is sustainable, the focus must include local

area impacts. Specifically, sustainability can only be proven by adequate: • assessment of local area groundwater impacts like drawdown of neighbouring bores. This needs groundwater testing and monitoring; • monitoring of creeks and groundwater dependant ecosystems; and • provision of ongoing groundwater abstraction protection and monitoring. Over the last few years many local residents, and their legal and technical advisors, made substantial objection to the Gillion groundwater abstraction. This objection was funded by local residents and built on the above issues and the 2011 QUT report by using local area data. Two results have been achieved. Firstly, the Planning and Environment Court upheld Council’s decision of rejection but we are now waiting as the Appeal Court is due to make a decision on the Gillion appeal. Secondly, the Gillion appeal raised important technical and regulation aspects for commercial groundwater abstraction on Tamborine Mountain. It is vital that Council, commercial groundwater companies and local residents learn from the appeal and better protect Mount Tamborine’s groundwater. Managing the trucks is also an important issue and one which Main Roads should resolve urgently. Steven Boyd (Boyd Water Services Pty Ltd) & Alison Rip

Keep your children in safe hands

A

free workshop to help parents and carers teach their children to stay safe will be held at the Tamborine Mountain Community Kindergarten next week. The course is run by In Safe Hands child safety educators and discusses the ways adults can help children to recognise when they may not be safe, whether in the presence of strangers or people they know. It also provides an insight into how adults can recognise the signs of child abuse, protect the vulnerable and act accordingly. Kindergarten director Joanne Moran

said the workshop was valuable for all parents and carers and dealt with some difficult issues. “The workshop offers some practical tools that adults can use to help children understand their safety in a positive way and I would recommend it to all mums and dads,” she said. The workshop will be held at 7pm at the kindergarten in Coleman Square, North Tamborine, on Wednesday, July 24. For further information or to enrol in the course, contact the kindergarten on 5545 2224.

Fresh insights into power of mind The Mountaintop cabinet maker, Roman Hair Shoppe Aformer Harambura knows what he is talking about when he says the mind is a powerful tool that can be used to improve health and quality of life. With his Evolution Through Consciousness spiritual development, meditation and discussion group, Roman will be sharing his experiences in helping others to realise their full potential and make the most of themselves and their lives. A sales professional and motivational speaker, Roman speaks from experience when he says meditation can be lifechanging. In 1988, Roman was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer which had been caused by years of passive smoking and inhaling lacquers and wood dust during his early working life. He said he rejected the treatments offered, deciding that if he were going to die he would die a whole person but believing above all that he would live. Roman describes what followed as the ‘most terrifying and extraordinary journey of his life’ as he believed he would be cured naturally without surgery or drugs. Ten months after his diagnosis, said Roman, he was cured, to the disbelief of his doctor. “The mind is a powerful tool that can be used to improve health and the quality of our daily lives,” he said. “Through self-realisation we can each bring harmony into our daily lives, making us more balanced and complete people who

not only benefit ourselves but society as a whole. “Meditation is used to motivate, relieve stress, enhance creativity, develop psychic powers and help us connect with our own spirituality. “Spirituality is not a religion, it is a way of life. We are all spiritual beings on a journey of self awakening.” On Tuesday, August 20, from 6.50pm, Roman will be offering a free introductory night to his 13-week course, Evolution Through Consciousness, at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre. For details, phone 0439 686 736.

A beautiful mosaic for music lovers

T

HE Prezzi Singers, in collaboration with the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra, invite you to join them for an evening of music and song they believe will both delight and inspire. Their concert will be held on Saturday, August 10, starting at 7.30pm, at Tamborine Mountain Presbyterian Church. The night’s musical journey will begin with the work of Baroque composers Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric

Handel, through to the glorious melodies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and onwards to the Romantics, followed closely by the post-Romantic music of French composer Cesar Franck. This will be followed with some famous Negro spirituals including traditional pieces such as Deep River and Wade in the Water. The program will contain a diverse range of styles, including some contemporary pieces, along with a selection of works from Tasmanian composer Michael Horsphol.

Laughs-a-plenty for TM Little Theatre

T

AMBORINE Mountain Little Theatre’s latest comedy production, How the Other Half Loves, promises to give audiences a night to remember. The action revolves around three couples all linked by their husbands’ careers and takes place in two rooms simultaneously. Bob Phillips is having an affair with Fiona Foster and both use a third couple, the Featherstones, as an excuse for being out late. The Featherstones are invited to successive dinner parties at the Fosters’ and the Phillips’. However they both take place on stage at the same time. How is this possible? Well, the set designers, builders and stage crew have been busy creating a fantastic set which answer this question. But why not see for yourselves? With plenty of laughs along the way you can be assured of a great night out. Get a few friends together and make up a table or two. Opening night is almost sold out but there are good seats left for most other performances. Don’t leave it till the last minute or you may miss out on this wonderful production. At less than $20 a ticket its a great bargain for live theatre.

Awkward moments

The production opens Friday 19 July and runs for three weekends, Friday and Saturdays, at 7.30pm with a matinee Saturday on July 27 at 2pm.
