N army officer about to deploy to Afghanistan and a wreath laid in memory of a young soldier killed there last year added to the poignancy of Tamborine Mountain’s Anzac Day commemorations this year. On Tuesday, Tamborine Mountain State School students paid tribute to the Anzacs and the contribution of Australian servicemen and women since the Gallipoli landings during a ceremony in the school hall attended by parents and former and current members of the defence forces.

Among them was Major Jason Hayes, who this week will begin his deployment in Afghanistan, and guest speaker Major Matthew Fielden from the Land Warfare Centre, Canungra. Major Fielden, whose grandfather was among the Gallipoli reinforcements, urged the students to continue to honour the Anzac memory and to be loyal to their country and their friends. “We should always remember that there are never any winners in any wars,” he said. At this year’s Tamborine Mountain Anzac

Day service, a new name was added to the roll of honour – that of Private Matthew Lambert of 2RAR who was killed in Afghanistan in August 2011 – and in whose memory a wreath was laid at the circle of remembrance. The crowds at Tamborine’s 2012 Anzac dawn service and mid-morning parade showed that while it has been almost 100 years since Laurence Binyon wrote his ode of remembrance, the sacrifices of the soldiers of the first world war and those of subsequent conflicts are far from forgotten. WATCH COUNCIL

T has been disappointing and disturbing to see some of the tactics being employed in the run-up to the election. For some contributors to the press it seemed that anything was justified in the bid to avoid change. It is to be hoped that the Scenic Rim isn’t to suffer in the longer term from such ‘anything goes’ strategies. This column is being written with no possibility of it being published in time to alter the outcome of the election, but there could be some lessons for the future. One very noticeable tendency has been for many letters to the press supporting the status quo to be effectively anonymous. Some have made the most outrageous claims while the author hides behind either no name, a doubtful christian name or suspect initials. On the other hand, those calling for change generally publish their identities. I wonder if that is indicative of what the whole difference has been about. We seem to have had a Council that pursued opaqueness while those promoting change are promising transparency. We could do with a dose of the latter. I commend the Tamborine Mountain News and the Tamborine Times for sticking to their guns and publishing both points of view even though there must have been some doubt about the trustworthiness of some sources. It is a very great pity to see this privilege abused ! The Tamborine Times seems to have been particularly targeted. As well as many letters, the most recent issue carried a two page advertisement. It was lodged by somebody in Kalbar on behalf of "an informal group of independent residents across the Scenic Rim". Those "independent residents" remained anonymous but strongly attacked Derek Swanborough and Bevan Pressler who had the temerity to object to the way in which the present Council was conducting its affairs. The advertisement was headed Myths and Facts in the Scenic Rim. I don’t have space to dismantle it point by point but it is certainly more Myth than Fact. For those who know the whole story, the bit about the farcical and extremely expensive Hyacinth saga was laughably misleading. There was certainly no mention of the fact that the judge, before dismissing every previous approval but one, commented that the Scenic Rim’s Council’s actions were inexplicable and incomprehensible. The unfortunate thing is that the advertisement looked so professional it could be mistaken for a council press release and, due to the timing, corrections couldn’t be published before the election. However, it gets worse. The on-line Kooralbyn newspaper, the Kooralbyn Times, provides a facility for letters to be posted on its website. It reports that it became concerned about the number of over-the-top letters that were appearing, attacking the possibility of change. When Cr Swanborough was the target of a comment which contained unsubstantiated and defamatory allegations of a personal nature and were made under a pseudonym, that is anonymously, something had to be done. It was found that many of the letters, including that with the particularly offensive allegations, had

with

Phil Giffard

come from the same computer network under six or seven different aliases. I now quote directly the Kooralbyn Times conclusions: "The aliases linked to the same IP address have all posted comment that is clearly biased in the light of local election candidates and state party politics and candidates. The defamatory post could be seen as an attempt to draw attention away from the problems by questioning the integrity of another." "Is this part of a campaign to pervert the political discourse in an attempt to secure the election of a candidate(s)? If so, it goes to the heart of issues of credibility, and to engage in such a subterfuge may be indicative of what may happen later - given the influence of power." That was very well said. Think about how pervasive the disgraceful corruption of proper democratic process may have been! However, it is not only the Kooralbyn Times which has such problems. Rae Hope, a candidate for Division 3, was also running a website which gave letter writers the privilege of posting comments. The privilege was so abused that it had to be withdrawn. I have had my own run-in with Cr Brent’s old-boy network recently. I had publicly expressed concern about Cr Brent’s use of the Council of Mayors to pursue priorities without the proper involvement of our Council. I cited the Wyaralong off-road motor cycle facility as having proceeded without planning approval and little by way of a business plan. Cr Brent did not respond but, in the press, up bobbed Cr Graham Quirk, the present Brisbane Lord Mayor galloping to Cr Brent’s defence. In response, I made it clear that I believed the Council of Mayors performed a necessary function by developing strategies of regional interest. However, Cr Quirk went much further in stating that the functions of the Council of Mayors included "to deliver projects of benefit to the residents of south-east Queensland." He apparently couldn’t comprehend that this delivery of projects was precisely what concerned me, particularly when it is implemented without the proper local government process. That is precisely what happened in the Wyralong case and Cr Quirk made no comment on that. I admit I lost some respect for Premier Campbell Newman when he expressed such extravagant and illogical support for Cr Brent at the latter’s campaign opening. For someone who became Lord Mayor of Brisbane without serving as a Councillor and then Premier without serving as an MLA to say that experience as a Mayor was needed to become a Mayor should have had listeners rolling in the aisles. Now we have Cr Quirk reporting for duty. As I write, votes are still being lodged and I wouldn’t have a clue as to the outcome. With a minimum of three new Councillors, some things will be different. We can only hope that residents will be able to have increased confidence in being better involved in the way our Council conducts our, I repeat, our affairs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR: Dear Editor, TM Library What a fantastic library resource we have here on Tamborine Mountain. The Friends of the Library also fundraise to purchase additional magazines and books to add the collection available to us. It is such a pity therefore that our magazines are regularly vandalised by removal of pages, sometimes as many as 10 in one magazine, that contain recipes. There is a very affordable photocopy facility in the library, free computers to type up the recipe desired or type up or handwrite the recipe/s at home. Perhaps if there are household members aware of pages of recipes, torn from magazines adorning the kitchen bench, they could mention to the cook that the above facilities are available. Denise James

Main St Village 21 April 2012

O

N Tuesday evening 17th April some 60 people turned out to the Zamia Theatre to discuss the proposal to enhance Main Street into a charming village area that will be great for locals and visitors alike. A positive meeting was held between business owners, politicians and residents and we formed a general consensus that the way the Main Street Village concept is being developed is to the benefit of all. We subsequently understand that Mt Tamborine Marketing is proposing a market for Main Street so we have had initial discussions with Steve Vawdrey regarding his proposal. The Main Street Village committee welcomes suggestions from the community for consideration so that we can make this enhancement something that you will enjoy. We have already received several ideas which are excellent. All suggestions to be sent to gina@travellingplaces.com.au by 30th April or ASAP after that.

S we go to press Radio and TV News report major changes in councils throughout Queensland, with about 43 new mayors to take office in the state’s 79 councils. However, Scenic Rim Regional Council does not seem to have rated a mention at this time. As far as Tamborine Mountain is concerned the candidates’ scores of votes at this stage are: Division 1: Nigel Waistell (~53%), Cath Buckley (~32%) and Tony Lambert (~14%). At the close of count on April 28 this represented only 66.64% of total votes. Division 2: Nadia O’Carroll (~54%) and Richard Adams (~46%). This was 66.52% of total votes. In Canungra (Division 3) Virginia West is well ahead with ~58%, followed by Ken May with ~29% and Rae Hope with ~14%, making it 60.25% of votes counted so far. In Division 4 (Beaudesert) Jennifer Sanders is well ahead with 54.97%, Thomas Undery has 28.88% and Astrid Kennedy 16.15%. In Division 5 Kathy Bensted has 29.76%, Peter Truer 15.23%, Rick Stanfield 45.92% and Robert Chataway 9.09% In Division 6 Julian Creighton has 14.99%, Duncan McInnes a commanding 61.12% and

Catherine Bermingham 23.89%. In the Mayoral election the preliminary percentages, i.e. before the allocation of preferences, and again as at close of count on April 28 were: John Brent (~40%), Derek Swanborough (~22%), Wendy Creighton (~18%) and Joy Drescher (~10%). These figures will change with the allocation of preferences. Although final results may not be available for several days, it appears likely that there will be at least three new faces at SRRC and that should be enough to achieve the greater transparency and ‘open government’ we all deserve. Candidate Comment Comment from Nigel Waistell, whose numbers at this stage make him potential Division 1 Councillor replacing Derek Swanborough, said on Sunday “I am very humbled with the result so far and, if confirmed, I will work to earn the respect of the whole community. If Cr Brent is returned as Mayor, I will present my thoughts on governance change to Council as a whole to see what level of support there is. I also hope that Cr Brent would acknowledge the views expressed by the community of Tamborine Mountain and move some way to accommodate the governance changes the Mountain wishes to see.”

Jabiru – Black-necked stork

W

E only have one species of stork in Australia and this is the Black-necked stork. Its more common name, Jabiru, is not an Aboriginal word; it is derived from the Amazonian Indian word zabiru which describes a South American stork species which resembles its Australian relative. The Jabiru is the largest wading bird in Australia; it stands up to 1.5 metres tall, can weigh over 4 kilograms, and may have a wingspan in excess of 2 metres. It has long red legs and a thick black bill that it uses to forage in shallow water for molluscs, fish, eels, crustaceans, insects, reptiles, frogs and plants. The tail and wing stripe are glossy black, the body and remainder of the wings are white, the most striking plumage is on the neck and head, where the dark iridescent feathers shine with a stunning mix of vivid green, blue, black and purple. The males have dark eyes; the female’s eyes are yellow. These birds live in a variety of waterways – wetlands, floodplains, rivers, waterholes, billabongs, mudflats and mangroves in northern and eastern Australia. It was formerly believed that these birds were nomadic or migratory, but further studies indicate that they move within their territory which is an extremely large area. Jabirus are usually observed alone, in pairs or small bonded family groups. Couples pair for life and share nest building and chick rearing duties. They build a large nest of sticks, hidden high in a tall tree beside a waterway. Breeding season

occurs March to October, 2 to 4 eggs are laid but only one chick usually survives. It was thought that Jabirus were mute, however they can actually make a deep booming call. Usually they are silent and use the noises of clapping and clattering their beak to communicate. They are impressive birds both on the ground and in the air. They fly straight with their long neck and legs extended and use thermals to ascend to great heights then soar majestically hundreds of metres above the ground. These beautiful birds were once plentiful in the wetlands of eastern and northern Australia, but their numbers have declined dramatically and they are now extinct in much of their original range. Much of their wetland habitat has been drained, polluted and modified by industry, development, agriculture and mining. Jabirus require large nesting trees close to waterways; often these have been cleared and so reduce the available nesting sites for these birds. In addition because of their large size and wingspan they can often collide with power lines. We are fortunate to still, very occasionally, see this species in local wetlands. They are shy birds which are very easily disturbed, so it is kinder to observe and admire this spectacular bird species from a distance. TRAVELLING PLACES with Gina On the Road to Mandalay is a Rudyard Kipling poem that my father recited to me from a young age. In my mind’s eye I conjured up an exotic country brimming with life; the colours and smells are still tangible. Exotic Burma (Myanmar) has been mostly hidden from the outside world for many years. Now the wonders of this magical land begin to reveal themselves. Discover the majestic temples filling the Bagan plains and the villages around the Inle Lake. Be surprised by floating gardens, giant Buddha statues and the warm welcoming smile of the local villagers. Shop for local handicrafts in the market places and marvel at the ancient sites. Float down the Irrawaddy River with a sense of a gracious bygone era. After years of turmoil Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy is encouraging the support of this burgeoning democracy. Travelling there now is an amazing opportunity to see what Asia was like in days gone by, with British colonial touches that seem to transport you back in time. It’s also heart warming to see just how much the locals want to welcome you in. The people are overwhelmingly friendly, they love meeting foreigners and telling you about their homes. If the destination fascinates you I recommend the recently released movie “The Lady” which offers an insight into the recent history of Myanmar. There are different ways of travelling in Burma from basic to luxury; independent, small group and larger escorted tours; overland or river boat. Please come and talk to us to help design your adventure to Myanmar.

Open Day at the Heritage Centre

S

UNDAY 22 April saw the Heritage Centre open for locals and visitors, and all day a steady stream of interested people came through the gates to see our much admired Heritage Centre on display. The first scene to meet their eyes was David Law and his Model T Ford, lovingly restored to the thing of beauty and envy it is today. This is the fourth Model T David has owned and restored. When he reached the stage of repairing the body he had very little of the original bodywork, so decided to use timber. And very good it looks, too. The floor of the body, and all the timber except the red cedar finish, was made of 4” T & G hoop pine out of an old local railway siding building. Ribs made out of rafters were attached to the floor and the top rail with four rightangle brackets. The finished work is splendid. There were displays of spinning, butter-

making, laundry – done the old way – wood working, and blacksmithing. Visitors were able to look up photographs of people and events that particularly interested them, and ask about families who lived here in the past. One of the Historical Society’s projects is the compilation of a data base of all the families who have lived on Tamborine Mountain, so that people seeking information about their forebears can find out easily just where they lived and what they did. It’s not just on open days that there are things to see. The Historical Society members work constantly to preserve our past. You can see them in action any Tuesday morning – and might be tempted to join them. You’d be very welcome.

E are privileged to hear at Probus meetings about global events that have claimed headlines. In April, we heard about Uganda, for decades a human rights disaster. Since 1962, Ugandans have suffered gross violation of their rights, including genocide, government sponsored violence, elimination of elites, forced exiles and expulsions, and imprisonment without trial. More than two million people have been killed, maimed, imprisoned, or exiled. Children have been left without parents, and women without husbands. With no government assistance, many of these have survived by begging in the streets. There are 3 million orphans in Uganda, many of them used in the past as sex slaves and child soldiers. Operation Uganda, a Christian charity started by Brisbane couple Jenny and Russell Barton, has set up Jordan House, an orphanage in Kampala which cares for 70 orphans, and a training course to enable women to become self-sufficient. At our monthly meeting Jill Stephan showed videos and displayed for sale art, craft and jewellery made by the ladies in their empowerment programme. The proceeds go to the women, and support the Bartons’ work in Kampala. If you are interested in learning more about this

organization and its fundraising, contact Barry Chick on 5545 0676. At the same meeting, Elsa Rasmussen and Marjorie Wilson, who prepare morning tea for Probus meetings, handed a cheque for $500 to Tamborine Mountain Community Care representative, Neville Goodrick. Their efforts not only supply a sumptuous repast for members, but also make a tidy amount for charity. Well done, Elsa and Marjorie! Probus meets every third Wednesday of the month, at 10.00 am in the Vonda Youngman Community Centre. Warrick Bailey, Probus Publicity

NEW MAUI READERS Book Notice: an artist’s largesse Mr JW Lewin, Painter and Naturalist by Richard Neville. New South Wales Publishing, 272 pp. $39.99 WO hundred years ago British academia was excited about the unfolding discoveries in New Holland, especially the birds. A culture of collection and classification developed in a milieu where an unthinkable wealth of new material luxuriated. John William Lewin (1770-1819) was a very well-endowed artist, as son of William Lewin, author of the work “The Birds of Great Britain.” John Lewin was granted a free passage to New South Wales in 1800; his benefactors, the Duke of Portland (Colonial Secretary) and the Duchess. They provided the copper plates on which he engraved illustrations of insects, and later birds. The text was set up in England. He was thus the vanguard recorder of the novelty of the fauna of the new colony. He also adapted a lifestyle for inclusion in exploratory trips, including the Blue Mountains crossing by Lawson, Blaxland and Wentworth. A considerable number of his priceless “Birds of New Holland” appear to have been lost at sea. Mitchell librarian Richard Neville has resurrected the image of Lewin as collector and illustrator and regards his works as “triumphs of the art of nature trail-blazing.” As a precursor of the famous John Gould (he later collected for him) Lewin’s record has languished in obscurity. His name has been enshrined as a patronym of our Mountain resident, the Lewin Honeyeater, Meliphaga lewini (pictured above). The original description by William Swanson in 1837 is recorded in his “Natural History of the Birds of New South Wales”, collected, engraved and faithfully printed after nature by John William Lewin, of Parramatta, New South Wales. POLICE NEWS by Constable Pete Blundell, North Tamborine Police

Y

ESTERDAY I was driving home from work in my personal vehicle along Main Western Rd, when a white coloured vehicle accelerated and overtook me. I look down at my speedometer and see I am doing 60, which is the speed limit. About four car lengths in front of me is another vehicle doing about the same speed and travelling in the same direction. The white vehicle still travelling at speed crosses the centre line markings, which are now double continuous lines, and speeds off in a southbound direction. I later speak with the occupants of the vehicle which has been overtaken by our impatient driver in the white vehicle. The two occupants confirm what has taken place and seemed concerned about the driver of the white vehicle overtaking them on double continuous white lines, especially since they were not holding up traffic and were driving at the speed limit themselves. Well guess what, the common law enables police to investigate offences that we observe being committed whilst we are off duty, so I will be making inquiries to determine who the driver of the white car was in the coming days and we will be having a chat! ANZAC day meant an early start for us at the Police Station; out of bed at 3am and start duty at 4am. Get dressed in our best uniforms with a tie, hat and medals. It’s the day of the year that Steve (Acting Sergeant HARGREAVES) and I get stuck into each other about our Corps loyalties (Steve being an old Infantryman and myself being a dedicated and proud ex-Cavalryman), but it’s all in jest. It’s a day we mingle with other exservicemen and women at the Bowls Club and

rib each other about whether you’re a navy man, a fly boy or a soldier, but always in the back of my mind is reflection on the good times I had in the service and remembering those who served with me, before me and those still serving. Presently many are serving in far off lands, in dangerous circumstances. On this day we pray for their safe return to Oz at the conclusion of their respective tours of duty. Lately we have had a few successes in locating and returning stolen property to their rightful owners and dealing with the offenders; we hope this trend continues. It is always a good feeling to be able to reunite victims with their stolen property and then to give them feedback that we or the courts have dealt with the offenders in a timely manner. Lastly, drink driving on the Mountain: since the last issue of Police News several more persons have been charged with this offence, one gent recording a massive breath alcohol reading at roadside at well over six times the legal limit, absolutely mind numbing. Magistrates Court outcomes pending.
