OSCAR CORDON Wheel Master 2024:

TMC is proud to announce that Oscar Cordon has been named 2024’s Wheel Master. Congratulations, Oscar!

Each year, the Wheel Master award recognizes one outstanding TMC driver based on nominations from employees, safe driving record, years of service, and excellence in customer service. Oscar—who was named Driver of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2023—certainly excels in all of those areas. As Operations Manager Craig Divine says, “Oscar is a pillar of TMC. He sets the standards for what every driver should strive to be like.”

STARTING A SUCCESSFUL CAREER

Oscar started driving for TMC in 2005, in part because of our commitment to getting drivers home on a regular basis. He wanted to be sure that he could be home to spend time with his wife and family, including four children and now 12 grand-

children. “For me, family is very important, so I go home on the weekends to spend time with my wife,” he says. And throughout his 20 years with TMC, Oscar says that his fleet managers have done a great job of finding routes for him that allow him to get home every weekend.

As a linehaul driver, Oscar hauls cargo for several different TMC customers, and he enjoys the variety that this gives his days. Every morning, he says, is “a new chapter, a new adventure. When you pick up your load, you don’t know what you’re going to see, who you’re going to meet. I always like to talk, and you learn from other people. I like to listen to people, and I like to learn.”

Unlike some driving jobs, flatbed driving isn’t just about sitting behind the wheel of a truck. TMC drivers are active throughout their days, as they secure and tarp their loads. Oscar says that this is part of what he likes about the job. “I get bored if I am just sitting down and not doing anything,” he says. “With flatbed, you get the exercise.”

“Oscar, you deserve this award for your hard work and dedication. I’m glad to be part of your Operations team.

-Craig Divine, Operations Manager

THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY—ON EVERY LOAD

One constant any time Oscar is behind the wheel of his truck is his commitment to safety—as shown by his 2.37 million safe miles. “Safety, for me, is the number-one rule. I don’t want to get hurt or someone else getting hurt,” he says.

Even with his years of experience and expertise, Oscar emphasizes that he never takes safety or load securement for granted, and he puts in the extra work to make sure every load is safe and secured. “Even if I have hauled the load 50 times, I take a step back and think, ‘Is this the best way to secure this load?’ Not just for my safety, but for the safety of others that are going to be next to me and behind me,” he says.

Oscar knows that taking his time to do each job the right way—the TMC way—is key to safety on

ABOUT THE WHEEL MASTER AWARD

As 2024’s Wheel Master, Oscar joins an elite group of TMC drivers. For more than 30 years, TMC has given this award to one outstanding driver each year. Combined, the Wheel Masters have more than 100 million safe miles and a thousand years of safe driving.

Oscar says that he was happy and shocked to learn that he had been named as this year’s Wheel Master. “There are no words to describe it,” he says. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing.”

the road. “I’m never in a hurry,” he says. “Once you get to that point of being in a hurry, anything can happen.” He says that he always takes his time, especially when it comes to securement, and he encourages his fellow drivers to take this same approach. “Do not rush or let someone else rush you,” he says. “If the load is not secure on to that deck of the trailer, I am not moving. It’s not worth it.”

SUPPORT FROM TMC

Oscar says that his fleet manager, David McBee, and operations manager, Craig Divine, have also been key to his success. “I get all the support I need, especially from Craig Divine,” Oscar says. “If I have a question, he always takes the time and says, ‘Ok, here’s what we’re gonna do.’ And if he doesn’t have the answer, he says, ‘Let me figure that out, and I will call you back’—and he always calls me. You know that if you have a problem, you have someone you can depend on.”

Oscar encourages his fellow drivers to take advantage of the support that TMC offers. “If you have a question about the load, call somebody,” he says. “Don’t assume. Always call somebody, even at night. The help is always a plus—don’t assume, ‘Oh, I think I’m doing it right, I’m gonna roll with it.’”

Fleet manager David McBee emphasizes that Oscar has more than earned this honor. “I can truly say that Oscar is very much deserving of this special award,” he says. “I don’t believe that I have ever heard anything but positive from Oscar or about Oscar from others. He is exemplary in every way. He does everything that is expected of him and more. It is a privilege to work with Oscar and an honor to be his fleet manager.”

Congratulations to Oscar Cordon for being named 2024’s Wheel Master.

MILESTONE SPOTLIGHT: CHRIS WEIK - 4 MILLION MILES

A professional driver since 1977, Weik joined TMC in 1995 when TMC acquired the company he was driving for. At the time, he wasn’t sure if he would stay with TMC: “I said, ‘Oh, I’ll see how it goes.’ And I stayed,” Weik says.

That decision to stay has turned into nearly 30 years with TMC, and during that time, Weik has been one of the fleet’s most reliable and outstanding drivers, with more safe miles than almost any other driver in the fleet.

Weik says he enjoys the solitude that driving gives him, as well as the chance to see new places. His career has taken him to all of the lower 48 states and Canada, including the remote Northwest Territories. Because he’s enjoyed driving so much, he says, it has hardly felt like a job. “If you love what you do, it’s no longer a job. It’s just something I like to do, but I’m getting paid for it,” he says.

DRIVER OF THE QUARTER

DEDICATION AND SUCCESS ON THE ROAD

“Chris is a great example of how to be a successful driver with character and integrity that others should strive to emulate.”

says Chris York, Operations Manager

Weik is grateful to his daughter and his close family members for their support throughout his time on the road, which has allowed him to be so successful as a TMC owner-operator.

Congratulations to Chris on this remarkable achievement!

RICHARD VAUGHN

Q1 2024

A TMC driver for more than 18 years, Richard joined the company when he was looking to start a new career as a truck driver. Richard has driven more than two million safe miles, without any preventable accidents. Fleet manager Brent Holtkamp says that Richard’s attitude is part of what makes him a great driver: “Trucking isn’t an easy job, and when faced with challenges and adversity he is always understanding and easy to work with.” Congratulations to Richard!

ERIC LINN Q2 2024

“Eric is excellence.” That’s how fleet manager Garrett Tigges sums up Eric Linn. Eric has been a TMC driver since 2013 and has driven more than 1.28 million safe miles throughout the United States. He has enjoyed having a career that allows him to be his own boss, and he appreciates the support that TMC has provided him. “This is a good company to work for,” he says. “I could never see driving for any other company.” Congratulations, Eric!

TMC IN THE COMMUNITY RETIREMENTS

BRANT NESS RECEIVES PATRIOT AWARD FOR SUPPORT OF NATIONAL GUARD AND RESERVE

Joplin terminal service manager Brant Ness received the Patriot Award from ESRG, an office of the Department of the Defense, in a ceremony on January 8. The award recognizes his support of employees serving in the National Guard and Reserve and their family members. Brant was nominated for the award by diesel tech Brian Kackley, a staff sergeant in the Air National Guard, who says that the support he receives from Brant and TMC allows him to balance his civilian career and his service to our country.

Congratulations to Brant on receiving this award! Thank you for demonstrating TMC’s ongoing commitment to honoring veterans and members of the military.

HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

At TMC, the holidays always are a time to give back to our communities, and 2024 was no different. At our offices around the country, employee-owners brought in more than 3500 pounds of nonperishable food to donate to local food banks and community organizations. Thank you to everyone who participated!

The end of the year always brings a few departures of longtime members of the TMC team. And while we’re sad to see them go, we’re so grateful for everything they brought to the company during their time here, and we wish them the best in their retirement.

BLACK & CHROME SALUTES

I’m a new driver. Andrew approached me during my first visit at a distribution center. He showed me the ropes and how to work with the forklift driver for tarping. He also gave me some great advice! I appreciate Andrew for going out of his way to assist and drop some wisdom on a rookie. Thank you, sir!

-Devin Stinson to Andrew Richter

2016 Wheel Master George Calore wanted to give a shoutout and an attaboy to Richard. He wanted to acknowledge the job Richard did on securement and the way he approached everything as a professional. Please let Richard know his hard work has not gone unnoticed by his peers.

-George Calore to Richard Shook (as told to safety manager Rick Malak)

Excellent tarp and securement job. Tarp looks like it’s been vacuum sealed, and all straps are straight as an arrow.

-Alexander Chasteen to Lyndel Hester

Ron has been the best trainer throughout the entire process. Even after I got into my truck, he has been extremely helpful answering any questions I have and giving me pointers all throughout! Big black and chrome salute to Mr. Ron Stewart.

-Hector Santana to Ron Stewart

Helped me organize securement supplies and showed me how to use the Trimble for a breakdown. He made a hard day easy and taught me valuable learning experience. he volunteered time out of his day to help a new driver learn how to navigate obstacles in trucking.

-Derek Parks to Robert Cribbs

Awesome trainer. Prepared me for the road.

-Jones Ard to Robert Lovrien

Want to give a special shout out to truck #14129 for being an outstanding colleague! Six am at the consignee, while finishing up being unloaded, Michael came to check up on me. He got to know me, provided great tips and insights, helped me roll up my four-inch straps, and even demonstrated/trained me on how to replace mudflaps. Please acknowledge Michael for being excellent and going above and beyond. Thank you.

-Sopal Nhiem to Michael Tereza

Isaac took time out of his Friday to help me with my first time ever securing insulation. Even though he probably wanted to focus on getting home, he helped me out and I appreciated it very much.

-Wyatt Westin to Isaac Flugence

SALUTES FROM THE COMMUNITY

In all the years I’ve been working on the road—20 years as a deputy sheriff in central Indiana, and now as the owner of a small pilot car service—I’ve noticed that TMC trucks always look good. It doesn’t matter if the weather is unfavorable, the beautiful simplicity of the TMC black and gold always looks great. Your drivers do a good job keeping the trucks clean and representing your company well. I know this is random, but every time I see one of your trucks, I smile.

-Ron Mahoy, Owner/CEO-Defender Pilot Service

Boone County (IN) Sheriff’s Office-retired USAF/SF-retired

Zach was undoubtedly helpful getting loaded with steel wire coils. I was two chains and two binders short and asked Zach if he had any extra. He gave me some without any hesitation, then proceeded to help me secure my load. I told Zach he didn’t have to help me, that he helped me plenty by lending me two chains and two binders. But he said, “I can’t drive past you and not help. It’s nice to have another hand sometimes.” Thanks, Zach, for giving me a hand.

-Zachary Kong to Zachary Hall

Phillip is very good at what he does. He’s firm but fair. Every time I call him with a question, he’s always happy to assist me. And if he doesn’t know the answer, he will make a call to assist. He’s a really good driver trainer. He has one way to do things... the TMC way. I was fortunate to have him as a trainer. When I received my own truck, I took a lot of his habits and techniques to my truck and constantly use them—from something as simple as the way the truck is organized based on convenience to using some of the time-saving techniques during load securing.

-Ricky Ballard to Phillip Ray

Mark picked me up from Brownsburg so I could be home Christmas week when my truck was delayed due to service.

He accommodated my extra belongings I had with me, since I was going home for the week. Mark was very courteous to drive out of his way to pick me up and drop me off closer to my home even though this meant extra time out of his route for me. Thanks, Mark!

-Eric Schmitt to Mark Gilchrist

Louis stayed around an extra hour or so helping me strap and tarp my load, as well as build a bulkhead. I had never taken this specific steel before, so I was unsure as to how best to secure it. This was my first time building a bulkhead, choke strapping, and weave strapping. All thanks to Louis! He also gave me great advice on driving through the mountains for the first time. He was truly a huge help and asked for nothing in return!

-Brazen Metz to Louis Reyes

Great driver! Went above and beyond to help and has a giving heart.

-Malik Savarese to Daniel Zapata
