arina Jo Chairez is a senior at Donna High School and will be graduating in the top nine percent of her class this year. She is the senior class historian, on the student council, and has been on the National Honor Society for all four of her years in high school. Marina has been awarded the AVID PROGRAM Certificate of Academic Excellence, Superintendents Academic Exellence Award this year as a senior graduate. Marina won Senior-Best Dressed, Little Cowgirl for the Mercedes livestock show, Little Miss Rio Grande Valley, Little Miss Riofest, Miss Spring Sweet/Weslaco Onion Fest, Miss Pre-Teen South Texas and the National American Miss Pre TeenTexas. But, it is a passion for modeling that drives her. page 14 ContempoMag.com

Marina began modeling at the early age of four and has, over the years, modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, she has appeared in nationwide ad campaigns for Guess for Kids. And, she helps her mom with fashions shows, trains for runway appearances, pageants, and for etiquette. She also recently won First in the Solo State Dance Champion in Austin, Texas, Community involvement is a really big part of Marina’s life and her efforts at Missy’s Community Involvement Program which participates in the donation of toys and clothes to needy children in rural areas of the Valley. As a community service, she visits adult day care centers to provide companionship to the elderly. Each year she collects food and helps sell bracelets for the Food Bank. Marina also visits the Children’s Hospital and donates books to the Angels of the Reservation Program. Valley’s No. 1 On-Line Magazine

page 15 ContempoMag.com

Marina will be attending the University of Texas in Austin to study pre-law this fall after graduation, and after she gets her mom all situated for handling the upcoming Summer and Fall sessions of modeling students at Missy’s Modeling Studio. Our best wishes to Marina as she embarks on her new career in college, and to her parents for an outstanding job of raising their wonderfully mature and talented daughter, Marina Jo Chairez. The Studio Missy’s Modeling Studio, owned by Marina’s mother, Missy Vargas, has been leading the way in Valley modeling since 1995. And, getting to know many of the young women who have walked through her doors at La Vista & North 10th Street you know her program is “all about self esteem and confidence, not just modeling”, as Missy always says. Missy’s is a place where eager young models and their parents know that discipline and character are the hallmarks of the studio, and their isn’t much slack on the shutter, if you know what I mean. Usually, a waiting list to join the valley’s most prestigious troop is not uncommonly the case each semester as teams of kids and young adults gather to begin lessons or learn of high profile opportunities that may come up this season.

page 16 ContempoMag.com

The studio works often with big names like Tommy Hilfiger, Apricot Lane, MelRose and Southpole

in the fashion industry, as well as, some big national publishers like Seventeen Magazine, YM, and Latina Magazine. Locally her girls are modeling for the Outlets in Mercedes, La Plaza Mall, Valle Vista Mall and boutiques throughout South Texas on a weekly basis. Missy’s Models have performed for some chart topping celebrities like: Diana Ross, Enrique Iglesias, Donna Summers, Air Supply, Akon, the Eli Young Band, Kevin Fowler and TI, and have worked recently on local music videos. While print is their modus aparendi, a number of Missy’s models have gone on to explore careers in television and film like Mira Garcia, Shannon Sauceda, and Erika Cavasos in recent years. They make many appearances at many local charity events in support of an array of needs. Some of their biggest efforts are directed towards helping the men and women of the military with care packages of personal items for troops serving overseas. Missy’s success over the years is due in large part to one fundamental ingredient-her expressed attitude about fairness, courtesy, character friendship, poise and professionalism are based on it, that she infuse the profoundly essential idea of self-esteem into each of her students above all else. Everyone that knows Missy knows this is true, and you can see it in the eyes of all her students, from the new starts to the veterans.

Desperado & Wild Boar Harley-Davidson Spring Fashion Shows T

he spoken and written words, “Harley-Davidson” are among the most iconic of American symbols simply because of a magnetic grassroots desire to be associated with the brand long before any ad campaign developed. And, that goes for the fashion wing of the logo as well. It has been over 100 years since William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson built their first production Harley-Davidson Motorcycle in a sideyard shed of William’s home in Minneapolis, Minnesota. And, it didn’t take long to see homemade versions of the winged logo emblazed on T-shirts and jackets all over America. So began the fashion arm of the young HD brand with a signature jersey. Creative Fashion Director-Karen Davidson strives to keep the “inner rebel” tradition of the bike-wear alive today. Their fashion design criteria is recongized for taking into account biker riding comfort and style preferences like no other in the world. On Saturday, March 31st, The Desperado & the Wild Boar Harley-Davidson show rooms hosted their red carpet, Spring Fashion Show featuring an array of bike wear for rebels of all ages to see. Leather, jeans, belts, and headgear were featured on Missy’s Models with gleaming bikes everywhere for backdrop! The HD fashion wear signature design process always start with looking at motorcycles first, and how the new fashion design can compliment the rider, ie: shoulder gaps in jackets for handlebar reach, or a match-up on a tank or body style. But, in keeping with tradition, they always pull out a 50 year old piece for a side-by-side comparison just to be sure that nothing of the legendary Harley-Davidson tradition is lost. You can visit the apparel showroom at Desperado Harley-Davidson on Bentsen Road in Mission. Just take the Shary Rd. exit on Expressway 83 and bear right. Look for the famous winged logo just up north a bit on Bentsen. page 18 ContempoMag.com

RAQUEL WELCH

o Raquel Tejada, better known as Raquel Welch, is an American actress, author and sex symbol. Welch came to attention as a "new-star" on the 20th Century-Fox lot in the mid-1960s. She posed iconically in an animal skin bikini for the British film One Million Years B.C. in 1966, for which she is best known. She later starred in Bedazzled in 1967, Bandolero! in 1968, 100 Rifles in 1969 and Myra Breckinridge in 1970. She reported the weather for KFMB in San Diego and later modeled for Neiman-Marcus in Dal-

las, Texas, but returned to California to launch a film career. Her first primary film role was for a beach film called Swinging Summer, that helped secure a contract with 20th Century Fox. Welch is most remembered most for an iconic billboard pose captured for the film One Million Years B.C. Today, Welch is a noticeable face of television commercials for Foster Grant sunglasses and reading glasses.

City of McAllen staff and representatives from FEMA continued to assess damages from the hail storm on Feb 29th. Officials are trying to determine if the City of McAllen and its residents are eligible for federal disaster relief funds. Emergency Management Coordinator Kevin Pagan said an estimated 1,100 homes sustained damages from the storm's torrential rains, strong winds and hail. "The intensity and length that this hail storm lasted was just astounding to me," Pagan said. The extreme weather event peeled back roof tops, stripped walls, toppled signs, shattered windows, defoliated trees, killed animals and flooded neighborhoods. An estimated 6 to 8 inches of rain fell in some

of the most impacted areas, overwhelming drainage infrastructure and sending water into homes. "There was an incredibly unique aspect to this storm that was well outside the design parameters of our drainage system," Pagan said. " Is it designed to take 6 to 7 to 8 inches of rain in a 60-90 minute period? No. It simply can't absorb that amount of water in that short period of time without having the detention facilities, the inlets or the infrastructure be overwhelmed with the amount of water."
