2010-11 Season Outlook The Auburn University at Montgomery men’s basketball team finished the 2009-10 season with a 14-13 overall record and a third-place finish in the Southern States Athletic Conference. This year’s team will have a much different look, as 12 members of the team are either newcomers or redshirts. However, the Senators will also return five very experienced players from last season’s team, all of which saw action in more than 20 games. “Stephen Jordan, Michael Lee, Johnny Williams, Ryan Norris and Charles Perona are solid returners with a lot of experience under their belt,” said Head Coach Larry Chapman. “Their leadership will play a significant role in the success of this team.” One of the key pieces to replace is in the blocks, as honorable mention All-American Nathan Thomas has now moved to the bench in a staff position. Last season, Thomas led the Senators in scoring at 12.3 points per game, while adding a league-high 57 blocked shots. AUM also lost Daniel Quinlan and his 10.3 points per contest to graduation. Despite the losses, the Senators have pieces in place to be successful, led by senior all-conference guard Charles Perona and junior forward and SSAC 6th Man of the Year Stephen Jordan. Juniors Johnny Williams and Michael Lee, as well as sophomore Ryan Norris, add experience to the guard position. Each appeared in more than 20 games last season. Several newcomers to the program as slated to make an immediate impact, including forwards Alex Hergott and A.J. Ansley. Transfer Jerry Stangline, as well as freshmen Marquez Brooks, Tyler Lowe and Matt Player, will also factor into the mix at the guard position.

“All of the guys we brought in this season are quality basketball players, who we hope will have successful careers here at AUM,” Chapman said. “We are very fortunate to have such a strong set of newcomers joining the Senators.”

Backcourt

The Senators return four letterwinners and add seven newcomers in the backcourt, led by Perona. An all-conference performer in his first season at AUM, he averaged 11.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, while playing just under 36 minutes per contest. “We have high expectations of Charles,” said Chapman. “He is an outstanding basketball player, a great competitor and a true leader on our team.” Junior Johnny Williams also returns to the team after starting 12 of the Senators’ final 16 games at the point guard position, and averaging 7.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. In addition, Williams increased his production in conference play, averaging better than nine points and four rebounds per outing. “Johnny stepped up last season at the point guard position and showed he could be a leader on the court,” Chapman said. “He is a relentless point guard, who has great confidence. We will count on him to do much of the same this year.” Adding depth to the position is junior Michael Lee and sophomore Ryan Norris, both of which saw significant action last season. “Michael puts forth the effort that is needed to become a great basketball player, and Ryan has the ability to become a great player,” Chapman said. “We expect both these young men to use their experience to help lead this team.”

2010-11 AUM MEN’S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE

2010-11 Season Outlook Joining the Senators for his first season is Stangline, who spent a season at Alabama State and another at Tuskegee. A pure shooter, who prepped locally at Lee High School, Stangline has experienced college basketball and will be expected to contribute immediately. “I think Jerry has found a home here at AUM,” Chapman said of Stangline. “He is a mature player with really strong offensive skills. He understands what it takes to win and I think will fit in well with what we are looking to do here.” Brooks, also a local product from Jeff Davis High School, comes from a rich bloodline of basketball players. His uncle, Albert Lewis, is a member of the Senators 1,000 career point club and is a former All-American at AUM. “I saw something special about Marquez even when he was playing junior high ball,” Chapman said. “He comes from an athletic family and I really think he can be a cornerstone for our program. He has impeccable character and is exactly what a coach looks for in a student-athlete.” Lowe is an athletic freshman who played his high school ball at Lee, where he helped the Generals to an 18-9 record as a senior. “Tyler is a hard-nosed competitor who has a lot of potential,” Chapman said of Lowe. “His skill set will really add a lot to our team, but he still has room to improve. I am excited about having him here at AUM.” After redshirting last season at AUM, Player is another option at the guard position. According to Chapman, Player has shown tremendous improvement and will factor into the rotation in the backcourt. “Matt is passionate about basketball,” Chapman said. “He has worked hard to improve on some aspects of his game and I think he can be a contributor to our team.” Redshirt freshman Brandon Holmes and freshmen Darren Wilson will also be a factor in the battle for playing time. “Brandon was redshirted last season and has a reputation in Dallas County for being a pretty good player,” Chapman continued. “He is a guy who can make things happen on the court and will be in the mix for some minutes at the point guard spot.” “Darren is a good kid with a lot of upside,” Chapman said. “He will need to make the transition to the college game, but with his work ethic, he has a chance to help our team.” “Bryant had a very successful prep career and is a very good academic student,” Chapman added. “It is a little early to tell what his role with the team will be, but I know that he is a hard worker and if he puts his mind to being successful, he will be.”

Frontcourt

With the loss of Thomas at the post position, AUM will look to Jordan to assume an increased role. Last season, Jordan averaged 9.1 points and a team-best 8.0 rebounds per game last year, while converting 55.4 percent of his shots from the field. “Stephen established early that he had a deep desire to win,” Chapman said. “Last year he had to play a lot of minutes and did it successfully. He is going into his junior year and I expect him to show leadership on the court. Stephen has the ability to be a great player, but he must improve his free throw shooting.” Five newcomers will also play a key factor in the success

of the frontcourt, led by Hergott and Ansley. Hergott, a junior transfer from Lyon, France, has a 6-8 frame, can shoot from the outside and put the ball on the floor. His size creates a mismatch for opposing teams and his work ethic is something that has caught Chapman’s eye. “Alex has really been a joy to coach,” Chapman said. “He is mature and loves Junior Forward Stephen Jordan basketball. He wants to be the best at everything he does. Alex puts a lot of expectations on himself and I think he is the missing piece of the puzzle to our team.” Ansley was a three-sport athlete at First Presbyterian Christian Academy in Hinesville, Ga., and is a proven winner. During his final three seasons, he helped the Highlanders to three consecutive Georgia Independent School Association state titles and a 56-2 record over his final two seasons. “A.J. is a freshman that has a chance to be a great player at AUM,” Chapman said. “We are expecting him to play a key role on our team this year. He is a tremendous student, with a great work ethic and a lot of heart.” Additional newcomers to the frontcourt include freshmen El Hadji Ndouir, a 6-10 center from Thies, Senegal, and transfer Caz Cole. “El Hadji is having to get acclimated to a new environment,” Chapman said. “I really believe that in time, he will be a guy who can help our basketball team.” “Caz has the tools to be a good college basketball player but must improve his strength,” said Chapman. “He is a guy who can give us some productive minutes because of his size and his ability to shoot the basketball.” Trey Geter, who will likely miss the season due to injury, but has tremendous upside, helped Wilkinson County High School to a 29-1 record and an appearance in the Georgia High School Association quarterfinals as a senior. “Trey is an athletic freshman who comes from an athletic family,” said Chapman. “He has already proven to us that he is a guy we can build around. His potential is unlimited and, we are lucky to have him in our program.”

Head Coach Larry Chapman Independent Region and NAIA District 27. In addition to team success, 17 players have earned All-America honors under Chapman’s leadership, including Joseph Manuel, who was a two-time second-team and two-time honorable mention All-American during his four years. Most recently, team chaplain Nathan Thomas garnered honorable mention All-America honors last season. Also under his guidance, two former Senators have gone on to play in the National Basketball Association, as Graham and Etdrick Bohannon each played several seasons in the league that is the benchmark for professional basketball. Along with his success on the court, Chapman doubled as the athletic director at AUM until 1999. From the athletic director position, Chapman was instrumental in AUM’s move from the Independent Region to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference, now known as the Southern States Athletic Conference. When Chapman came to AUM, only men’s basketball and men’s tennis were played. He pushed for the addition of six sports now being offered on campus along with men’s basketball. Chapman’s credentials are unmatched, boasting a history of success at every stop in his basketball career. As a player at Ludowici (Ga.) High School, he was a two-time All-State selection and twice led his team to the state championship tournament. Following his prep career, Chapman enrolled at Auburn University, where he was a three-year starter for legendary coach Joel Eaves. He was named to the All-Southeastern Conference sophomore team and was selected a team captain as a senior. He was the first player in Auburn University basketball history to start every game in a four-year career. After graduating from Auburn, Chapman stayed on campus and began his coaching career as the head coach of Auburn University’s freshman team. In six seasons, he recorded a 77-39 record, including an 18-1 mark in the 1965-66 season. From Auburn’s freshman team, Chapman moved on to Auburn High School, where he had consecutive 21-win seasons in 1972-73 and 1973-74. Prior to joining the AUM staff, Chapman spent three seasons as the head men’s basketball coach at Georgia Southern University, where he doubled the teams’ win total from his first year (8-18) to his third year (16-11). Chapman earned his bachelor’s degree from Auburn in teaching and physical education and his master’s in school administration in 1970. He has four children, Clint, Larry Jr., Christa and Luke.

HISTORY OF THE UNIVERSITY Auburn University at Montgomery was established in 1967 by Act 403 of the Alabama Legislature. This action resulted from the request of the citizens of the Montgomery area to establish an additional degree-granting institution to serve Montgomery and the surrounding counties. The first classes were offered in September 1969. A 500-acre tract on the east side of Montgomery was purchased for the site of the new campus. Two architectural firms developed the master plan for the new campus and designed the original buildings, which were occupied in the fall of 1971. A broad-based academic institution, AUM is organized into five schools: Business, Education, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Sciences, while the Air University Graduate Program and Division of Continuing Education offer additional educational opportunities.

In 1973 AUM was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as an operationally separate institution. In 1978, 1988, 1998 and 2008, accreditation was reaffirmed by the Southern Association. MISSION STATEMENT Auburn University at Montgomery’s mission, as the metropolitan campus of Auburn University, a land-grant institution, is to foster and exemplify excellence in education through instruction, research and service. Auburn University at Montgomery blends the traditional views of the university as a community of scholars with the contemporary view of the university as an integral part of the surrounding community, state and region. AUM provides academic programs that are characteristic of the finest traditions of scholarship and consistent with the responsibility of the university to provide support for the functions of government, regional economic growth and cultural enrichment through the arts. WHY CHOOSE AUBURN MONTGOMERY? Today’s economic crisis doesn’t have to cost you your college education. This year alone, Auburn University at Montgomery offered students more than $4 million in Pell Grants and another $20 million in student loans. Couple that with challenging classes and small class sizes, and Auburn Montgomery can provide you with an excellent education at a price you can afford. A STUDENT-TO-FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1 At Auburn Montgomery you won’t spend your freshman year in classes filled with 300 of your peers. Our classes are deliberately kept small (an average of 20 students), giving you more personal attention and allowing your professors to get to know you. BIG CAMPUS BENEFITS WITH A SMALL CAMPUS FEEL With programs of study in more than 90 areas, Auburn Montgomery’s courses run the gamut from accounting to sociology. We have sororities and fraternities for those who want to go Greek and numerous active clubs and organizations. Plus, your destination is never more than a five-minute walk on campus. FOUR-DAY WEEKS At Auburn Montgomery, many students take classes just four days a week – Monday through Thursday – making it easier for them to work, get home on the weekends or even travel. But students also find AUM can accommodate just about any schedule since classes are offered days, nights, weekends and online. We even offer a growing number of mini-term classes, allowing students to progress more rapidly. Furthermore, AUM offers some of the best facilities in the Southeast to accommodate that competitive spirit. The AUM Physical Education Complex serves as the venue for all AUM men’s and women’s basketball home games. Originally built in 1976, the gymnasium underwent a face-lift during the Summer of 2010. Renovations included a refinishing of the gym floor as well as the installation of new bleachers that seat 2,760. The newest addition to the list of AUM athletics facilities comes with the newly built on-campus softball field, on which the AUM softball team was able to play all home games during the 2010 season. The field is part of the AUM Softball Complex, which will eventually include the construction of a press box, concessions stand, locker rooms

and offices for the AUM softball coaching staff. The AUM Tennis Complex, also built in 1976, features a newly refinished playing surface for each of its 10 courts. People from throughout the state and even the nation come here to meet with lawmakers and present their idea or lobby their position, hoping to influence the direction of progress in the coming years. In addition to its turnkey position in governmental affairs, Montgomery holds a unique position in concerns of military training, technology, defense and education as the location of Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Gunter is the location of the 754th Electronics Systems Group (ELSG), which provides technical and customer service support as well as acquisition and program management oversight of over 160 Combat Support Information Technology (IT) systems. The ELSG also manages the Air Force standard desktop environment, and serves as the USAF lead for software program management under the auspices of the Department of Defense Enterprise Software Initiative. Montgomery is a city of vast economic diversity, with state government, the military, regional government, wholesale and retail trade, agricultural support and industry providing a well-balanced economic environment. The city’s role as a regional trade center is firmly established, serving as a wholesaling and distribution gateway to the Southeast in addition to the 22-county central Alabama

area. In 2002, Montgomery got the good news that Hyundai would locate its first United States automobile manufacturing facility in the Capital City. The construction of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama’s 2-million-squarefoot automotive manufacturing facility was completed in 2004. Hyundai’s first North American plant employs over 2,000 workers and produces the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai suppliers in the Montgomery metropolitan area have created more than $221 million in capital investment and 2,264 jobs. Area hospitals offer comprehensive medical services and facilities, as well as cutting-edge specialty services and practices. Montgomery residents have access to neonatal intensive care, open-heart surgical and cardiac treatment facilities and physicians, rehabilitative and therapeutic orthopedic medicine, cancer treatment centers and more. Additionally, there are many walk-in clinics that offer general medicine and private practice physician offices with services ranging from family practice to internal medicine and ophthalmology. Montgomery and surrounding area veterans also are served by the VA Medical Center. Things to See and Do Montgomery offers a wealth of recreational and cultural activities for people of all ages and interests. The city has been dubbed the “birthplace of Civil War and Civil Rights.” It was the first capital of the Confederacy, and the location from which the telegram was sent that started battle in the War Between the States. A star on the steps of the State Capitol building (which is on the National Register of Historic Places) marks the spot where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as president of the Confederate States of America. Montgomery also is the location of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s pulpit, from which he preached the gospel of non-violent revolution in the fight for Civil Rights, and is the site of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which sparked the movement for equal rights throughout the nation. Visitors also should stop at the Civil Rights Memorial Center, located alongside the Civil Rights Memorial, designed by famed architect Maya Lin. The center, operated by the Southern Poverty Law Center, contains state-of-theart exhibits and in-depth information about Civil Rights Movement martyrs, a 69-seat theater, a classroom for educational activities and a section dedicated to contemporary social justice issues and the Wall of Tolerance. The city is home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, the fifth largest Shakespeare Festival in the world, which draws visitors from throughout the world. Also located in Blount Cultural Park is the Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, which houses an extensive permanent collection, including Old Master prints by such artists as Rembrandt, Caneletto and Goya, and noted American artists John Singer Sargent and Edward Hopper. Additionally, there is world-class ballet, art education opportunities, a symphony orchestra and more. There also are many enjoyable family activities. The Montgomery Zoo boasts more than 700 animals from five different continents, including a brand new African elephant exhibit. People of all ages will be fascinated by a visit to Old Alabama Town, where they can see how early Alabamians lived and worked, or the Alabama Department of Archives and History, with its wealth of information. Children will be especially delighted by the archives’ “Grandma’s Attic” exhibit, which is full of hands-on activities, costumes and games. Another fun treat is the unique Alabama Cattlemen’s Association “Mooseum,” which provides a history of cowboy culture and livestock production. Shopping is also a popular pastime. Montgomery has unique boutiques tucked away into historic districts like Old Cloverdale and the Mulberry District, as well as first-class shopping malls

and centers. Eastdale Mall boasts the area’s only indoor ice skating rink, in addition to a wide variety of shops and eateries. Festival Plaza offers specialty shops, Rave Motion Pictures theater, and Shall We Paint?, a paint-your-own pottery activity and shop. The Shoppes at EastChase is a “lifestyle center” with upscale retailers and restaurants. And there’s so much more. Montgomery has many shops and restaurants sure to suit any visitor’s whim. Sports and Recreation In February 2003, Montgomerians were thrilled to learn that the AA baseball team owned by Orlando Rays Baseball Inc., which is owned by the Major League Baseball team the Tampa Bay Rays, had been acquired to play ball in Montgomery. The team was dubbed the Montgomery Biscuits and a new $26 million baseball stadium opened

Downtown Amphitheatre

in Spring 2004 beside the Alabama River. The stadium is a key element in the city’s ongoing Riverfront development and downtown revitalization project, with downtown and riverfront investment now totaling more than $900 million. A riverwalk and new convention center and hotel, The Renaissance, have added more appeal to the downtown area. Additionally, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department operates many facilities located throughout the city, hosting such activities as golf, swimming, tennis, softball and other sports, plus artistic and creative endeavors, physical fitness classes, activities for those with physical or mental disabilities, and educational programs, including a planetarium. The city’s Cramton Bowl hosts high school and college football games, as well as special events, and Paterson Field provides facilities for high school and college baseball games. Visitors to the River Region can also visit the nearby Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Prattville. The trail is recognized as one of the finest golf experiences anywhere.

The Southern States Athletic Conference and NAIA

The 2010-11 academic year will mark the 11th year for Auburn Montgomery athletics competing as a member of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC). The newly expanded conference now showcases 16 member institutions located throughout the southeast, including the states of Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee. The SSAC was established in 1949 as the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletics Conference with six member schools, including Oglethorpe University, Berry College, Valdosta State University, North Georgia College and State University, Piedmont College and Georgia Southern University. In 1980 the conference was renamed the Georgia Athletic Conference and remained so until 1988, when its expansion into Georgia’s bordering states brought the need to change its name to the Georgia-Alabama-Carolina Conference (GACC). In 2003, the official name was again changed to the Southern States Athletic Conference. The conference membership has worked for more than 60 years to maintain a level of competition, excellence and quality that appropriately represents its 16 member institutions. Since the conference’s inception and affiliation with the NAIA, 21 SSAC teams and 10 individuals have claimed national titles, while 22 teams have finished national runnersup. Since the inception of its athletic program in 1975, Auburn Montgomery has been a member of the National As-

sociation of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In those 35 years, AUM has claimed 18 national championships, and six of the school’s eight varsity programs have appeared in a national championship game. The NAIA, headquartered in Olathe, Kan., is a national organization with nearly 300 institutional members and over 60,000 student-athletes across the United States and Canada. Throughout its history, the NAIA has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate athletics. Since its introduction of the intercollegiate championship of basketball in 1937, the NAIA has maintained its elite standards while administering first-rate athletics programs. The NAIA has continuously affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer institutional postseason opportunities to black studentathletes in 1948, to allow institutional membership to historically black institutions in 1953, and on Aug. 1, 1980, to vote in favor of the establishment of athletics programs for women. Today, the NAIA strengthens its commitment to studentathletes and strives to enrich their college experience by supporting academic achievement and character development. The NAIA approaches sport and activity as an opportunity to intentionally teach beyond the fundamentals through the philosophy of the NAIA Champions of Character program. By applying the five core values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship, the NAIA has the ability to maximize talent to the benefit of each individual.
