THOMAS LUCKMANN

THESE ARE MY SELECTED WORKS

HI I AM

Hello,

My name is Thomas Luckmann.

Born and raised in Klagenfurt, I have been living, working and studying in Vienna for seven years. The spark of enthusiasm for architecture and the built reality sprang up in me through an (sometimes almost fanatical) enthusiasm for Gothic and Romanesque cathedrals in my youth. I drew them, looked for them, read about them, collected models of them, build them in Minecraft and one time even tried to write about them. Later, I started to concern myself with the context of them. I analyzed how cities are shaped, how they grew over time and how human history and behaviour changed them. This way I got engaged in the planning of cities and it’s relational networks: I finished secondary school with a pre-academic thesis about the viennese Ringstraße - the biggest urban development project in the history of Austria.

In 2016, inspired by the planning successes of the 19th century, I enrolled at the Vienna University of Technology to study spatial planning and development. It quickly became clear that I would feel very comfortable in this environment. The teaching of spatial planning places great emphasis on lateral thinking and universal, interdisciplinary design. This suited my generalist nature very well. Curiosity and fascination for many disciplines, their methods and networking have shaped me throughout my life. Cartography, geoinformation, legal aspects of spatial relationships, mobility and the financial and economic impact of urban planning provided the basis for the development of urban development concepts (Leoben) and urban planning projects (Oberlaa). In 2019, I was allowed to complete the Bachelor of Science in Spatial Planning and Development with a Bachelor‘s thesis on the topic of monument protection with a special focus on ensembles (Denkmal- und Ensembleschutz im Gesichte der Stadtentwicklung).

In 2017, I enrolled in architecture at the same university (Vienna University of Technology) and concentrated entirely on studying architecture after completing my bachelor‘s degree in spatial planning. In retrospect, it was an unusual decision to switch from the big picture to detailed design. However, my acquired knowledge of the built environment proved to be an excellent foundation. This enabled me to approach design tasks in an unconventional way and to position myself in an interface area between architecture and urban planning. My Bachelor project is a design for an Archive of Real Socialism in Tirana, Albania, at the Institute for Design Theory and Design. This is a particularly exciting task as Tirana is in a period of significant change. With this changing context in mind, the design studio aimed to establish a new point of reference for the city and venture a historical reassessment of communist Albania. Professor Tamburelli taught design practice with a strong focus on design, beauty, impact, role and expressiveness. Understanding and grasping international processes and trends, geopolitical contexts and historical development are as essential to me as design. In this respect, designing in Tirana offered an exciting mix of social discourse and architectural design. The Archive of Real Socialism marks my most recent academic project and received a nomination for the Pfann-Ohmann Prize

Now please have a look at a few of my works. Thank you!

for a large part of the twentieth century, in russia and eastern europe, not to mention extra-european cases, society was organized according to socialist principles. the experiment started in russia with the 1917 revolutions and expansocialist expanded to almost all of eastern europe in the years after the conclusion of world war ii. for ded around 50 years, more than 300 million people experienced a form of socialist life with little to no private property and an entirely planned economy. this socialist experience, while at times tragic, and certainly disappointing with respect to socialist theories and expectations, cannot be treated as nonsense and simply forgotten. this experience is precious, tions, particularly because contemporary europe decided not to develop it further. real socialism has in fact been the largest scale social experiment in the history of mankind. as proof of not just a possible society but of a real one organized according to entirely different criteria than our own today, the details of real socialism are worth investigating, archiving, and exhibiting. as another way of living together that was concrete (and undeniably effective for a considerable amount of time), real socialism is an extraordinary point of comparison for contemporary capitalism. in purely capitalistic jargon, real socialism is an asset for our non-socialist society. it shouldn’t be wasted.

With the new boulevard - the extension of a historic urban axis - the capital of albania possesses an urban element that is undergoing intensive change. the wide street cuts a swathe through the city. new urban situations are created in this process. this is also the case with the present building site, which, as an acute triangle, poses a special architectural challenge. while the boulevard appears striking and monumental in terms of urban planning, the changing surroundings that are to be rebuilt now demand a new reference. this reference was to be created with the archive of real socialism at this location.

initially, planning and form-finding took place freely and unconstrained by design, in a referential search in the canon of architectural history. throughout the centuries, the most diverse forms of handling triangular ground plans can be found. here, an axial arrangement of rooms was chosen, tapering towards the north. a central dome sequence serves as a circular access core and central distributor. it separates the building volume into a sober archive cube and a playful, expansive sequence of rooms with an open garden. a sober grey facade, created by plastered ventilated bricks contrasts colourful mosaiqe interioirs. material choices where made after examining variations analog and digitally.

conceptually, this house deals with real socialism in albania in stages. the real socialist experience is broken down into three social levels. these are the society as a whole, the family and the personal experience. the conceptual levels are divided into three spaces. the result is a multi-layered impression of the realities of life in an era that still exerts a strong influence on today‘s albania and is the subject of controversial debate. their conservation and exhibition therefore requires special care. the archive on the new boulevard wants to do justice to this diligence. at the same time. through its peculiar form, it attracts the attention that this chapter of albanian history calls for..

INTER MURUM

in this studiowork, the goal was to carve spaces into the ground to create a sequence of rooms at the schwedenplatz in the first district of vienna. we started the designtask by identifying existing urban structures in the neighbourhood through observational drawing. this led me to further investigate the sites structural history. with the torn down city walls in direct neighbourhood i considered the fortifications to be an excellent model for structure , monumentality and material. the goal was to dig holes into the ground that arrange a sequence of spaces together. i enforced the idea of the city walls by inverting them. this design strategy turned funnels and notches into a sequence of exciting spaces.

ACKER

acker is my earliest academic project. it proposes a developement strategy of a building site in oberlaa/the viennese south.

years of cultivation of the european natural space have transformed austria‘s soil and green space into a colourful, multi-faceted mosaic shaped by ownership and agriculture. this organic composition provides a reference, a guideline and a source of ideas at the same time. it gives shape and direction, is spontaneous.

as a particularly typical element of the flat landscapes of lower austria, the hakenhof is rural craftsmanship in its purest form. due to its unique layout, it meets modern standards of living comfort, freed from its original use. the inner courtyards created by the juxtaposition of estates and the house fronts facing the anger together create an exciting mix of public and private open spaces.

a mix of those two refernces draws a very clear pattern of courtyards dedicated to interpret the shapes given by agriculture.

the project isn‘t really groundbreaking....nevertheless it distilled my constant urge to study and use a site‘s grown urban fabric. historic forms of habitation and space occupancy can easily be translated in contemporary living. after all they have been tested for centuries ;)

LEOBEN

we did this project in 2018 as a part of the bachelors programme for spatial planning. developing ideas for a whole city was tough. but we managed to produce a 140 page strong programme

the work is an urban development concept covering 15 years of development for leoben, styria, austria. it analyzes the past, problems, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, potentials and possibilities of the styrian district capital and defines a spatial development plan, which functions as an advisor and guide for the city.

a city that is supported by unique actors such as the coal and steel industry, research and university as well as its history. this uniqueness is attempted to be transformed into cooperation in partnership through cooperative urban development.

in order to be able to grasp this spirit , it is sufficient to take a look at what is probably leoben‘s most contrasting district - donawitz. it is a housing estate commissioned by the industry to raise the living standards of the workers and provide them with quality of life and space. in this way, private economic interests brought about a large-scale urban development that leoben benefited from.

synergies like these are to be utilized through cooperation with partners in industry and research and urban stakeholders. partnerships can open up financial and creative opportunities and thus increase the acceptance of planning decisions among citizens. the presented concept highlights protagonists who can bring forward positive transformation in leoben and proposes them a scope of action. through cooperation between municipality and industry, research and associations, etc., innovation can emerge and the city can develop further.

this urban development concept is the result of an examination of an extremely complex and exciting space. in an area that can count on a strong economic sector and is attractive for students, workers and specialists.it is courageous, but at the same time grounded, with the lighthouse project of the small-town tramway, which attempts to distribute spatial development among many shoulders and builds on the strengths and potentials of a (city) region.

31
................................................................
*****

Three key processes of urban transformation through private stakeholders where identified. They where then analysed in detail and distilled to filter the urban benefits gained. This way, a blueprint of urban development was produced which was applied to future processes.

pestalozzi school

areas influenced positively by urban players urban players

the project EDUCATION CENTRE PESTALOZZI unites the three compulsory schools Volksschule Donawitz, Neue Mittelschule Pestalozzi and Polytechnikum Göss at one location.

The concentration of three educational institutions due to demographic changes could not take place without forward-looking planning and consideration of further change. The city therefore initiated an innovative planning process that allowed all those involved to participate in a non-hierarchical system.

In its form and design, the conversion pays attention to possible conflicts of use and makes use of synergies between teachers and students. In order to ensure balanced use, intensive support is provided for students and teachers.

university - innercity symbiosis

The founding of the Montanistische Lehranstaltung in 1840 was a milestone for Leoben.

Today, the University of Leoben focuses particularly strongly on a concentration in the city centre in order to maintain a compact campus. In this way, it contributes both directly and indirectly to the good development of the inner city structures, their pedestrian frequency, their residential quality and their attractiveness for business and industry. However, this only works because of the close cooperation between the city and the university management. The latter is also explicitly committed to Leoben.

With the upswing of heavy industry at the Leoben site, a new demand for housing arose for the workers moving in. On the initiative of the then technical director of the Austrian Mining Company Anton Kerpely, large-scale workers’ housing estates were built in the Vordernberg valley from 1907 to 1922, the so-called Kerpely Colony. It was intended to meet the increasing housing needs of workers’ families and to set new sanitary and housing quality standards.

. The concept of the colony was to create a synthesis between mass housing and garden areas, which brought a hitherto unknown standard to Donawitz for workers of the factory.

The special feature of this neighbourhood lies in its very nature. It was not the city that excelled as a developer here, but rather the factory, which actively pursued urban development out of self-interest and consideration for its employees. This unique symbiosis will act as a model for future urban processes.
