Curating your home
A A Home Home for for Him Him Reimagining the home in a masculine way
WELCOME Welcome to another edition of Inspiring Designs! We thought long and hard about what to cover for this issue before finally settling on two topics that I believe go hand in hand: Lighting and Luxury. How so? Well, you'll just have to read further to find out! Enjoy!

We appreciate your support of our small business!

2 / Welcome
Weighing the options
Choosing a light isn't always an easy process. There are so many different options out there, and they can make a major difference in the tone of your room. If you don't pick the right one, you won't get the functionality you need or the aesthetics will clash. It might still look pretty, but you'll end up hating it sooner rather than later.
Every area of your home has different needs. Kitchens, dining, living, all of it depends on how you use it. Some people need a lot of light. Others prefer dimmers so they can adjust it as needed. Talking to your designer can help clarify what are the best options for your life and situation. Just because they are beautiful does not mean they will function for you.
3 / Weighing the Options
4 THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU PURCHASE Lighting is often the last thing considered during a remodel and it can show. We have

your makeup or cut vegetables. They are best suited as display signs or fun decorations in a living area. Is it for right for late night reading? For working at your computer? For family
and flooring that stands up to pets, but what do you need from your lights?
2
Task determines a lot. You wouldn't use neon lights to put on
dinners? For romantic evenings? Remember to define the task
EZIS
before figuring out what you want.
Oversized is popular right now, but can overpower a small room and work against the design. Consider what it will look like
in your home, not just if it fits your style. If you are putting pendants over a small island, you don't want to
cover more than 50% of that island because it will look even smaller. Whereas, if you put one large light in a living room over a coffee table with chairs and sofas around it, since it is the only piece and acts as a statement, it can be larger than the coffee table and look perfectly fine. It is balanced to not only the coffee table, but the entire seating arrangement. Size takes into consideration
all the elements of the space, not just the immediate ones. 4 / Weighing the Options
Does the fixture need to be a special color or finish, such as gold or matte black? Will it match the other finishes in the room? Does it need to fit a certain theme? Will it stand
3 Color
out too much or too little against the other
colors you've chosen? Something that looks
good in the store or online won't necessarily look good in person
4: Technicals New lights come with a whole host of difficulties. Does it give you the right amount of light? Do you have the right bulb? Will it show through the shade? Do you have the right switches? Neglecting to account for these things will only lead to frustration and trouble.
Discussing your lighting with your designer and electrician will ensure that you don't forget something important or waste money. 5 / Weighing the Options
A COHESIVE PLAN IS NOT SIMPLY LINES DRAWN ON A PIECE OF PAPER. UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE MAKES A HOUSE A HOME AND A MORTGAGE AN INVESTMENT. Pay to get a good plan. Then stick to the plan. ---Damned Good Designer
Large pendants are popular right now, but what makes one better than any other? Hint: look at the materials. Two of these use gold and one is made of paper. They may all have a similar look, but they aren't made the same.

Pendantic about Pendants
Can you tell at a glance which one is most and least expensive?

7 / Pendants
Lighting is often more about aesthetics than utility, so here are some examples of art glass. All of it is attractive and has a purpose, but which piece of glass costs the most? Multi-drop lights are more popular than ever, but some types are more difficult to make than others. Even if you aren't going for the most artistic, they can be pricey. Can you tell at a glance which set is the most expensive?

Three popular styles in one: Layers, geometrics, and matte black. Matte black finishes are being treated like a neutral now instead of something eyecatching Natural Materials, like this pendant made of bleached coconut shells. It is also oversized, making quite a statement in any room
Sleek lines are a hallmark of modern Soft gold tones are not just popular for faucets, they are also
and industrial styles, both of which are alive and well
LIGHTING TRENDS everywhere in lighting
There are a lot of trends coming
and going, but here are some that seem to have staying power
Mid-centry modern is still wildly popular, but Art deco is back on the rise.
Wood decoration: beads & bangles. Part of this is the current fashion for natural materials, but part of it is due to the versatility of color options and matte finishes.

CASUAL
LUXURY
Living without pretense
Luxury
is about more than just living in a palace. It's
about having something that makes you feel good, makes your home look good, and is so natural that it doesn't seem out of place. This casual luxury is what we aim for and comes in many forms.
For some, the luxury could be a white couch and velvet draperies. For others, it is a remodeled kitchen. Still others want custom bedding. Big or small, these changes make a difference in how you see your home.
14 / Casual Luxury
Each of these clients found luxury in a different way: a unique kitchen backsplash, a Parisian style powder room, room to move in the master bathroom, tumbled marble toe kicks, and a custom-framed stained-glass art piece.
15 / Casual Luxury
Velvet is everywhere right now. The soft knap reflects light well and begs to be touched
Wallpaper is popular again, but in a variety of looks and styles. The one constant is the addition of texturing
Sheepskin is a subtle look but adds sophistication Metallics, particularly gold, are still seen as luxe. This particular mirror not only shows layering in one dimension but in two. There is also a subtle texture to the finish that adds depth and character
Luxury
Trends
Texture is a huge part of luxury. People don't want it to just look nice, they want it to feel nice. Right now, more texture is better. Velvets and faux sheepskin are showing up everywhere, not to mention heavy layering. 16 / Textures
