For the first phase, I will submit several refined brainstormed designs, including the exploration of phrases and words to be used on the cards, as well as initial thumbnail

sketches for each card design that fit within the stationery trends I will research. Additionally, I will submit pictures that I find to draw inspiration from.

PRELIMINARY PHASE RESEARCH

Design Trends magazine reports that in 2022, off-kilter rainbows, cartoonish lettering, and Japaneseinspired designs were the most popular types of stationery designs. The Greeting Card Association

quotes that “the most popular everyday cardsending occasion by far is Birthday, followed by Sympathy, Thank You, Wedding, Thinking of You, Get Well, New Baby, and Congratulations.”

DESIGN DECISIONS AND METHODOLOGY

Based on the research that I conducted for my discussion post during the process phase, I will continue with creating card designs influenced by bright lettering, fun letterforms, and floral patterns.

I also have narrowed down my selection of card phrases to six Happy Birthday designs, three Thank You designs, and three Thinking of You/ generic I Love You greeting cards.

CHANGES MADE FROM FEEDBACK

I received some feedback on my moodboard post that my color palette needs some tweaking. I agreed that this change is necessary so that ultimately my designs will work better in unison with one another. I also decided that I would like to expand my color palette for more design options.

In addition to this, the resources provided in this week’s module, and attached resources Professor Dugan provided in my graded comment section, were very helpful for me in deciding that ultimately I want my final designs to feel clean and solid (in combination with being to playful and whimsical) thus I will proceed with vectorized handlettering. INTERMEDIARY PHASE PROJECT DESCRIPTION

For the second phase, I will submit refined designs for each card that use my knowledge of design trends as they relate to typography and are, or are close to being, finalized.

DESIGN DECISIONS AND METHODOLOGY

I continued to hone in on my designs by focusing on designs that worked really well with one another. For my preliminary stage, I added additional colors to my color palette. With this change, I have been able to match style, color, and overall theme easily. I am still moving forward with the decision to create designs digitally. To keep my designs interesting, I added shadowing, shine, and minimal detailing to my lettering.

INTERMEDIARY PHASE CHANGES MADE FROM FEEDBACK

The largest change that I was suggested to make is to simplify some of my designs. There were several designs that I submitted that the swirls and flourishes got messy and in the way with one another. I agree with this and want to make this

change so that ultimately my designs will feel clean and simple with minimal flourishes and only ones that are necessary to the designs. I still want my designs to have a playful and whimsical vibe to them, but in a minimal way.

FINAL PHASE PROJECT DESCRIPTION

For my final project I will submit the final versions of the stationery cards along with a document showing the process from start to finish. This will include my brainstorming phase, thumbnail sketches, refined sketches, and lastly the finished products. I will also submit a condensed print-ready digital file with the stationery designs.

DESIGN DECISIONS AND METHODOLOGY

Not much changed in my decisions and methodology for the final phase. I still wanted my designs to feel light, bubbly, and fun, but clean, minimalistic, and simple at the same time. I did decide to simplify a few of my designs and change the color palette on some as well based on how I wanted the design of the card

FINAL PHASE CHANGES MADE FROM FEEDBACK

Lots of changes were made to my card designs compared to when I first started this project. In addition to completing three new designs, I adjusted several designs that had lettering that felt awkward or uneven. These adjustments included shaping ascenders/ descenders differently, tightening or loosening words, centering phrases, or changing the shape of certain letterforms. My reason behind this was to create the most cohesive stationery "pack" of card designs possible. This is successful by having a complimentary color palette,

similar typefaces/ handlettering styles, and correct type hierarchy, all in which I implemented into my designs. In addition to these changes, I added a signature and extra information to the back of the cards. to be perceived. The most important thing to me was to have a unified collection of designs that feel unique and interchangeable. The designs are sized to fit 8.5" by 11" paper with two designs per page. Each individual unfolded card will be 5.5" by 8.5".
