For the second year, Education Through Music and the CMA Foundation have partnered to provide music education to even more students throughout New York City. As part of the renewed partnership, ETM was the beneficiary of a $125,000 grant, which was announced on September 3rd at

the nomination ceremony for the 48th Annual CMA Awards at NYC’s Best Buy Theater. The grant will directly impact the ETM Partner School Program, allowing for more new instruments and materials for students, and up-to-date materials for teachers. This new grant follows the first in

2012, in which CMA donated $20,000 to launch a new music program at PS 103, the Hector Fontanez School, in the Bronx. With the core commitment of providing students with quality music education, as well as unique opportunities, ETM brought students from the elementary school Continued on page 2

to perform at the 2013 CMA Awards nominee press conference. This year, keeping with the tradition, a new group of ETM students performed Darius Rucker’s hit single “Wagon Wheel” for Rucker, who, along with the country music group Little Big Town, hosted the September 3rd press conference. The performance captivated Rucker and the crowd alike and displayed the effectiveness of the music education program on the students. Speaking on behalf of ETM, Executive Director Katherine Damkohler spoke of ETM’s gratitude to the CMA Foundation for their support of music education, as well as their continued dedication to the ETM Partner School Program. “Education Through Music is thrilled to partner with the CMA Foundation to bring music as a core subject to all children…. CMA is the perfect partner to help ensure every child receives a quality music education.” In a public statement, CMA Chief Executive Officer Sarah Trahern said, “This is our second grant to Education Through Music and we were delighted

to make the announcement in New York and involve the students who are direct beneficiaries of this important initiative…. This program changes lives and we are proud to support a cause that brings music education to the students who need it most.” In addition to the grant announcement and student performance, ETM teachers were invited to attend the famous CMA Songwriters Workshop at Joe’s Pub on September 2nd. The workshop, which featured prolific songwriter Bob DiPiero, gave ETM teachers an in-depth look into the process of songwriting, as well as anecdotes and wisdom that they can learn from and pass on to their students in the classroom. ETM now provides music education as a core subject to 20,000 students each year. The CMA Foundation’s support plays a vital role in expanding our programs and providing music education to even more students throughout NYC.

Nord Family Foundation Sponsors 2014 Professional Development Retreat for ETM Teachers Week-long summer program augments year-round commitment to teacher training Nearly 50 teachers, guest lecturers, and ETM program staff gathered for the 2014 ETM Academy Retreat, which was held for the second year in a row on the beautiful campus of Oberlin College in Ohio, this year from August 9 to 14. The full week of almost 12-hour days was jampacked with everything from vocal technique and marketing methods to a ukulele jam session and a visit to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The professional development retreat was made possible through a grant from the Nord Family Foundation. Of the partnership, executive director of Education Through Music Katherine Damkohler said, “We are committed to providing every child with highquality music education, and that starts with having qualified and welltrained music teachers. Through the generous support of the Nord Family Foundation, we are able to provide our teachers with the training and professional development they need to teach effectively and really make a difference in the lives of the many students they teach.” Teachers from New York joined teachers from Cleveland, Los An-

geles, and as far away as Chile to collaborate and explore the many roles they will take on in a classroom and school. While these roles include nurse, custodian, lifesaver, artist, and cheerleader, just to name a few, the teachers were up to the task. “This is one of the most dedicated, enthusiastic, and talented groups of teachers we at ETM have ever had the pleasure to work with,” said ETM program staff member Catriona O’Dwyer. “We are so excited to send them into our partner schools this fall.” O’Dwyer joined Program Director Peter Pauliks and fellow program staff members Nicholas LaFleur, Meryl Cullom, and David Wilson to teach sessions on topics

like lesson planning, learning rubrics and assessments, music literacy, band conducting, and general music strategies. Almost an entire day was devoted to the study of music teaching methods, with four experts from the Cleveland area each giving a lecture on a different method. In-depth presentations on the Gordon, Dalcroze, Kodaly, and Orff methods had teachers using body percussion, hand signals, tone bells, puppets, movement, and chanting; after gaining an overview of all four methods, teachers formed groups to discuss how they could adapt what they had seen and experienced in the workshops into their own classrooms. New ETM teacher Gordon Green said of the retreat, “Not only was it an excellent chance for professional development, with very helpful and knowledgeable facilitators, it was also a wonderful opportunity for all of the teachers to create a network and tight bond amongst ourselves. I know that we are all here to support one another in the collective effort that is the ETM model.”

2014 Summer Music Academy For the second consecutive year, Education Through Music held its month-long Summer Music Academy for students in New York City. ETM students from across the city looking to continue their music education participated in the summer day camp, which was held throughout the month of July. Students from a variety of ETM’s Partner School programs in grades 4 through 8 made their way to One World Middle School in the Bronx to expand their musical skills. “The Summer Music Academy is a wonderful opportunity for ETM stu-

dents to maintain and build upon the skills they learned during the school year while having fun and gaining confidence by performing for their peers,” said Kathy Damkohler, Executive Director of Education Through Music. The Summer Music Academy, which hosted an array of activities ranging from orchestra, band, or guitar sessions, to Broadway-style performance and world music, enriched the skills students acquired throughout the school year, while introducing students to new, exciting elements of music education.

Building on the success of the inaugural Summer Music Academy last year, there was a 27% increase in enrollment from 2013, with many students opting for the day-long sessions. The Music Academy saw many returning students, but for newcomers, the joys of the program were on display as the fast-growing summer camp continued to attract ETM students to keep learning during the summer. In addition to the daily sessions, students were invited by New York City Council Speaker Melissa MarkViverito to attend and perform at the Bronx Youth Fair. The fair, attended by hundreds of children participating in various summer education programs throughout NYC, gave students a chance to meet and watch their peers and discover what they were up to during the summer months. ETM teachers also benefited from the Academy, as the dedicated Partner School teachers guided their students to successful activity sessions, while also learning new teaching methods and brushing up on their own music skills. Students experienced a fun-filled month of activities and learning that they can now carry into the new school year. ETM is very proud of all the students who participated in this year’s Summer Music Academy, and looks forward to seeing many of them, as well as many new faces, next summer.

ETM’s Bassline: A New

Monthly Giving Campaign

The bassline is the backbone of music: it helps keep time and define the key, while giving the melody and harmony a foundation on which to grow. And at Education Through Music, the Bassline is a new community of monthly donors who keep ETM moving to a steady beat! Monthly giving is a low-hassle, flexible way to make a difference for partner school students. $5 per month, for example, can provide recorders to an entire class of ETM students. $12.50 per month can support a full year of music education for one child. Members will receive special recognition and field updates.
